An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Legal establishments authorize police discretion of deadly force if they believe the threat to life or great bodily harm outweighs to threat presented by a criminal. Policing has been reactive when modern weapons of the times are used for criminal purposes. The adaptation process by police has made firearms necessary tools for conflict resolution. The Supreme Court also plays a role in determining what is reasonable use of deadly force, as these situations are rare with little precedent that require judicial review. Research on deadly force examines micro-level characteristics to better understand these situations. This study contributes to existing literature …

Factor Structure Of The Short Form Of The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (Bis-15) In An Early Adolescent, Non-Clinical Population, Phuc Toan Nguyen
University Honors Theses
The Barratt Impulsiveness Scale (BIS) is a widely used tool for measuring impulsivity and has been influential in shaping current theories of impulse control. Studies have found that BIS factor structures can vary between different populations. The present study examined the factor structure of the widely used shortened form of BIS (BIS-15) within an early adolescent population. The BIS-15 has fifteen questions thought to assess three factors of impulsivity: non-planning, motor, and attentional impulsivity. This study applied confirmatory factor analysis to a cross-sectional sample of 612 middle school students in grades six through eight. The published factor structure of the …
Victim Or Complaining Witness: The Difference Between Guilty And Not Guilty, Michael Conklin
Victim Or Complaining Witness: The Difference Between Guilty And Not Guilty, Michael Conklin
San Diego Law Review
A trial court’s distinction between using the language “victim” and “complaining witness” may seem trivial, but it plays a significant role in the criminal justice system. Defense attorneys argue that using the term victim presupposes what the trial is meant to determine and therefore denies defendants’ constitutionally guaranteed presumption of innocence. Some defense attorneys have gone so far as to argue that “calling the deceased a victim is just as wrong as calling the defendant a criminal.” Conversely, prosecutors point out that the term victim is frequently used in statutes and that it does not necessarily presuppose criminal activity by …

Conflicts brawl into a very intensive occurrence occurred in the district Johar Baru, DKI Jakarta. The brawlers are from teenagers forming a brawl gang. Through using qualitative research method, we began to know the mapping of conflict and the collective behavior as an action and reaction from conflict condition in Johar Baru sub-district comprehensively by intelligence analysis. Several factors trigger the occurrence of conflicts, especially social, economic and political factors make the brawl into one of the activities that belong to deviate from social norms and occur in a sustainable manner. White Supremacy And The Racial Contract In The United States, Cayna Laurene Sharp
White Supremacy And The Racial Contract In The United States, Cayna Laurene Sharp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis project conducts an investigation into the evolution of the American polity through the lens of the racial contract. By relying on Charles Mills' The Racial Contract, I show through three episodes of American history, how the racial contract has been instituted and revised over time. The three periods of history I investigate are: the end of Reconsturction to the rise of Jim Crow in the nineteenth century, suburbanization in the mid-twentieth century, and the rise of mass incarceration as a means of replacing slavery since the end of the American Civil War. Through this analysis, I hope to …

Reflective Writing In Prisons: Rehabilitation And The Power Of Stories And Connections, Sandeep Kumar
Reflective Writing In Prisons: Rehabilitation And The Power Of Stories And Connections, Sandeep Kumar
VA Engage Journal
The United States has the highest rate of incarceration in the world. Even though the rate of crime is dropping, incarceration rates remain fairly steady. What’s more, recidivism (i.e., re-offending after conviction for other crimes) is also very high in the US. If offenders continue to offend, even after completing their sentences in a correctional system designed to address their underlying criminal activity, what is the point of having such a system? Can the system be made more accountable and better? Have we considered all the options for criminal reform? This article explores these questions using effective rehabilitation principles to …

Covid-19 And Numeracy: How About Them Numbers?, Joel Best
Covid-19 And Numeracy: How About Them Numbers?, Joel Best
Numeracy
Quantitative efforts to understand the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic need to be viewed through the lens of social construction. I begin by comparing the efforts to quantitatively measure the plague in London in 1665. Then I develop five propositions for studying the social construction of statistics: (1) facts are social constructions; (2) measuring involves making decisions, (3) counting is not straightforward; (4) all comparisons involve choices; and (5) social patterns shape numbers. After examining how these propositions affect what we know about COVID-19, I consider their implications for moving beyond mathematics when approaching numeracy.
