Real-Time Simulation On Virtual Dressing Based On Virtual Human Body Model, Chuanyu Xue, Hongwei Dong, Mingmin Zhang, Zhigeng Pan

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In this paper we put forward a real-time method of virtual dressing using a single Kinect device. Virtual dressing using a low-cost device has very important application, but classic 3D human body dressing algorithms cannot work in real time. We need to generate 3D human body model before virtual dressing using Kinect. In this paper, we use a method which is based on body's basic information to build human body model, and the method is optimized to enhance the local simulation results. This paper presents a tracking ellipsoid modeland applies GPU parallel computing to decrease the amount of calculation …

Worlds And Words: Interrogating Type And Map As Systems Of Power And Embodied Meaning-Making, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada Jun 2020

Worlds And Words: Interrogating Type And Map As Systems Of Power And Embodied Meaning-Making, Jane Turner, Manuela Taboada

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

This paper responds to the call to move away from the centre and to design from many centres. We need to address cultural colonisation and systemisation; to counter misdirection and deceit in order to reveal – not merely the ‘centre’ but the ‘systems of the underside’: structures and systems that arise in the past and which continue to “cloud our eyes” in graphic design communication. Inspired by the works of Walter Mignolo, Arturo Escobar and Boaventura de Souza Santos, which expose the ‘systems of the underside’ and the notion of ‘ecologies of knowledge’ in order to disentangle (and free) or …

Envisioning A Pluriversal Design Education, Lesley-Ann Noel Jun 2020

Envisioning A Pluriversal Design Education, Lesley-Ann Noel

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

Vestiges of the curricula at the Bauhaus and the Hochschule, Ulm, the former designed in the 1920s, and the latter created in the 1950s, can still be seen in design curricula around the world. These curricula focused on the craft of design and were very tied to large industrial economies. More traditional design curricula born out of the Bauhaus and Ulm, focused on graphic and product or industrial design. The design community has placed several calls to re-imagine a future design education. This contribution shares several sketches of design curricula driven by pluriversal issues, epistemologies and ontologies, and not created …

(De)Institution Design: Decolonizing Design Discourse In Uruguay, Lucia Trias Cornú Jun 2020

(De)Institution Design: Decolonizing Design Discourse In Uruguay, Lucia Trias Cornú

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

Design is a relatively new discipline in Uruguay. The dominant discourse, linked to Industrial Design-ID, has its beginnings in the foundation of the Centre of Industrial Design-CDI in 1987. This research is an invitation to look further into how ID has played a role in Uruguay -as a global-south country- related to economic and social structures introduced with the implementation of neoliberal production policies. In line with current global-south design discourses, the research aims to understand the role of institutions in the formation of design discourse(s) in Uruguay by approaching the CDI’s foundation from a decolonial worldview. Following the idea …

Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez Jun 2020

Bridging Design Prototypes & Autonomous Design, Gloria Gomez

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

The bridging design prototype (BDP) approach is a human-centred design method for individual designers and small organisations. BDPs are fully functional rapid prototypes that user communities accept to incorporate in real activities; while designers use them for learning about the community, the context, and the practice. Experimentation should not require the presence of designers. By functional, it means all features should operate. But, BDPs are not necessarily minimum viable products, as the digital or tangible materials with which they are built could have a limited lifespan. Informed by autonomous design, this reflection involved a meta-analysis of a project carried out …

Embracing Many Worlds: The Wixárika Calendar, María Rogal

Pluriversal Design Conference Series

Fifteen years ago, I began a design collaboration with Sarah Corona Berkin, a professor at the Universidad de Guadalajara, and a group of Wixáritari teachers and community leaders in San Miguel Huaixtita, Jalisco, México. My students at the University of Florida and I worked with Corona Berkin in the classroom and with the Wixáritari in San Miguel Huaixtita, to create a new cultural artifact—a calendar—with and for the community. This project started me on a path working with Indigenous groups in various parts of México to bring western design concepts into conversation with Indigenous epistemologies. In subsequent collaborative projects, in …

Progressive Image Denoising Algorithm, Haiyang Li, Weiguo Cao, Shirui Li, Kelu Tao, Li Hua Jun 2020

Progressive Image Denoising Algorithm, Haiyang Li, Weiguo Cao, Shirui Li, Kelu Tao, Li Hua

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Currently almost all denoising algorithms are implemented by processing original noisy image itself simply, which could not enhance the performance further by combining original noisy image with the denoised image. To solve the problem, a framework of progressive image denoising method was proposed. The framework is based on the block matching and 3D collaborative filtering (BM3D) algorithm, which has the most remarkable denoising effect. It includes three layers and two fusions. Each layer is implemented by BM3D and denoises the fused image generated from the previous layers. Adequate statistical results show that under the same noise condition, our proposed …

Tools For Analyzing R Code The Tidy Way, Lucy D'Agostino Mcgowan, Sean Kross, Jeffrey Leek Jun 2020

Tools For Analyzing R Code The Tidy Way, Lucy D'Agostino Mcgowan, Sean Kross, Jeffrey Leek

The R Journal

With the current emphasis on reproducibility and replicability, there is an increasing need to examine how data analyses are conducted. In order to analyze the between researcher variability in data analysis choices as well as the aspects within the data analysis pipeline that contribute to the variability in results, we have created two R packages: matahari and tidycode. These packages build on methods created for natural language processing; rather than allowing for the processing of natural language, we focus on R code as the substrate of interest. The matahari package facilitates the logging of everything that is typed in the …

Through Astronaut Eyes: Photographing Early Human Spaceflight, Jennifer K. Levasseur Jun 2020

Through Astronaut Eyes: Photographing Early Human Spaceflight, Jennifer K. Levasseur

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Featuring over seventy images from the heroic age of space exploration, Through Astronaut Eyes presents the story of how human daring along with technological ingenuity allowed people to see the Earth and stars as they never had before.

Photographs from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs tell powerful and compelling stories that continue to have cultural resonance to this day, not just for what they revealed about the spaceflight experience, but also as products of a larger visual rhetoric of exploration. The photographs tell us as much about space and the astronauts who took them as their reception within an …

Comparing And Implementing Digital Evidence Applications To Reduce Cyber Crime Losses, Colleen Lim Jun 2020

Comparing And Implementing Digital Evidence Applications To Reduce Cyber Crime Losses, Colleen Lim

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

A massive problem within the United States is the financial loss that occurs through cybercrime. Before a cybercrime investigation can be solved, there needs to be enough gathered evidence. One way to obtain evidence is through processing the individual’s digital files from any electronic device or source, this is called digital evidence. Digital evidence can be obtained through the use of multiple software such as Forensic Toolkit (FTK), Magnet, or Autopsy. Although each software is used for the same goal, to obtain valuable information that can be used as evidence to support an existing case, there are unique features that …

Community Engagement: Leveraging Library Online Tools To Support Local Historical Organizations, Jennifer L. Murray Jun 2020

Community Engagement: Leveraging Library Online Tools To Support Local Historical Organizations, Jennifer L. Murray

Library Faculty Presentations & Publications

Among Floridians, Jacksonville is known as the “First Coast.” It is a reference to the fact that Northeast Florida has some of the oldest European settlements in North America. The numerous local historical organizations are forever challenged to preserve and share the rich history of “all that is Jacksonville–including early settlers, 19th- and 20th-century urban planning and architecture, civil rights and Black history, city governance, and our national parks heritage.” They often do not have the resources needed, but local academic libraries are rich in resources and tools that can benefit organizations outside the library and help bring more awareness …

Animation is one of the flagship products of creative industry which grow rapidly, under Bekraf (Indonesian Creative Economy Board) film, animation, and video sub sector. The high quantity of animation production in Indonesia can be shown through several animation projects which currently still in production stage or already circulated, whether in the form of serialization for TV or in the form of movie on silver screen. Therefore, the study of animation made in Indonesia nowadays is needed more than before. As an art form, animation is also a media that can be deconstructed for each of its aspect, historically, socially, …

Watermarks : The Catalogue For Home Enthusiasts, Susana Oliveros Amaya May 2020

Watermarks : The Catalogue For Home Enthusiasts, Susana Oliveros Amaya

Masters Theses

Not just when tricks are revealed as tricks, but also when they become something else and materials still push one direction but then take a different turn. The wardrobe does not quite fit in your Ford Ka, the shelves are not exactly straight, the bed does not fit the mattress and the cabinets do not line up. The tension between ideals and use opens a space for re-appropriation, one that can reveal and turn its socioeconomic codes against themselves. Perhaps these are precisely the moments of friction when these ideological watermarks can be disrupted.

Temporal Collisions, Lizzie Baur May 2020

Temporal Collisions, Lizzie Baur

Masters Theses

We live during a time of smoothly effortless design that encourages instant gratification. In this sea of pre-existing content, most of which we experience through layers of mediation, my practice encourages drifting. As a graphic designer, I try to decondition myself from reductive thinking. In response, this thesis operates on the fringe, cycling attention to unexpected associations, harnessing temporal collisions and formal play towards diminishing cultural baggage and preconceived notions. I deliberately attune the reader to the labyrinthine as an experience by which to interrogate common sense and steer the imagination towards moments of uncertainty.

This work engages a kind …

Counter Formation, Fabian Fohrer May 2020

Counter Formation, Fabian Fohrer

Masters Theses

Counter-formation establishes a foundation to envision a more accurate shape and field of inter-relations across disciplines and contexts that are not only receptive but appropriative and elaborative.

By approaching the space of the counter-form, my ambition is to generate a responsive structure and an archive of fragments to build upon - a blank canvas with a variable format to recast vision and action.

Counter-formation places emphasis on the transformative, liminal space that allows one to encounter contexts from within, between, and around to organize or break them in a different fashion.

How To Do Things With Things, Emily Guez May 2020

How To Do Things With Things, Emily Guez

Masters Theses

Humans have always done things with things. It’s at the very origin of who we are as a species: we’ve gone from being bipedal homonins to people who live in complex societies by making rocks into tools. Things can serve a practical function, but they also carry cultural and symbolic meaning: they can tell our personal stories, allow us to connect with each other, and be the outer manifestations of our inner lives. The things we use in our every day lives, by implying a set of actions we can take when interacting with them, participate in shaping our reality: …

Living Under Surveillance, Fan Jia May 2020

Living Under Surveillance, Fan Jia

Masters Theses

Our first impression about surveillance will always likely relates to with advanced technology. However, advanced technology is the means that only awakens our consciousness of surveillance but is not the birth of surveillance. It has been embedded in our lives in our lives all the time for generations. Before the age of technology blooming, surveillance was carried out by the human eye, and this mode continues always. My thesis starts from our daily relationships, and analyzes how surveillance happens around us within those relationships and people interactions.

This thesis proposes a surveillance system in a specific city: —Washington D.C., which …

Strata : Lessons In Latency, Mukul Chakravarthi May 2020

Strata : Lessons In Latency, Mukul Chakravarthi

Masters Theses

Every visual artifact, from a street sign to advertising commercials, is an event of culture, a cross-section of time. Crucial to my work as a designer is to build an interpretive understanding of these images as more than surface, more than banal. Embedded in their construction are dense, unseen contextual latencies— social, economic, and political forces — that combine to define a cultural moment.

This thesis offers a series of lessons in making visible visual infrastructure. It emphasizes design’s semiotic potential to examine and leverage a view on what these visual signs represent as ideological constructions. Through a conscious un-layering …

Beautiful Dirt : Exploring The American Taboo Of Death Through The Things We Leave Behind, Jake Dangstorp May 2020

Beautiful Dirt : Exploring The American Taboo Of Death Through The Things We Leave Behind, Jake Dangstorp

Masters Theses

‘Beautiful Dirt’ is a project meant to help people think about death as a way to learn and grow, rather than a ‘never happening’ taboo. Contemporary research into western dialogues around death show a consistent anxiety towards being forgotten, as well as a fear of being a burden when passing away. The abject nature of the topic leaves people diminishing the weight of the things they leave behind, and the things they forget to. This perpetuates a cycle of denial in order to avoid stress, emburdening loved ones with an unplanned mass of personal items and piecemeal stories to assemble, …

Curation As Methodology, Lindsay Persohn May 2020

Curation As Methodology, Lindsay Persohn

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The term curation was once only utilized by museum professionals. Currently, the term seems to have been borrowed by aesthetically-minded persons looking to collect ideas or objects. Through a detailed account of one curatorial process, this article aims to convey the richness of context, the depth of connection, and the promotion of new ideas classically associated with curation. Drawing on these methods, the author begins to develop an outline of curation as a transferrable methodology, useful for exploration of aesthetic works as they related to sociocultural histories. As an exemplar collection of artworks, illustrations of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in …

Orientation: Seeing And Sensing Rhetorically, Megan Poole May 2020

Orientation: Seeing And Sensing Rhetorically, Megan Poole

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Many visual terms exist in Kenneth Burke’s rhetorical schema, yet the optical implications of such terms remain largely unconsidered by rhetorical scholars. This study presents Burke’s orientation as both a method of seeing and a way of uncovering rhetoric’s relationship to sensation. Burkean orientation—deriving from ophthalmology and Gestalt psychology—brings into focus three practices of studying the senses in rhetoric: attending to lived experience, considering sensation as elemental to rhetorical work, and practicing rhetorical criticism attuned to the entrenchments and slips of the senses. Engaging the biology of vision reveals sensation as connective tissue between nonsymbolic motion and symbolic action.
