Visual Structure Editing Of Math Formulas, Gavin Nishizawa Aug 2020

Visual Structure Editing Of Math Formulas, Gavin Nishizawa

Theses

Math formulas can be large and complex resulting in correspondingly large and complex LaTeX math strings for expressing them. We design operations to visually edit the typeset LaTeX formulas. The operations are invoked via the formula's control points, which are created as a way to specify an operation associated with the point's location relative to a symbol in the formula. At the control points, formulas can be extended in multiple ways, LaTeX can be inserted locally by typing, an existing formula can be inserted, or part of the formula itself can be moved to that point. Parts of formulas can …

Astralis: Discover 1000 Years Of You, Emma Canfield Aug 2020

Astralis: Discover 1000 Years Of You, Emma Canfield

Theses

Problem

We are defined by our memories and experiences. Despite the proliferation of family photos and video media, we lack an engaging way to connect our memories and experiences to those images. Online genealogical programs (such as Ancestry, MyHeritage, or FamilySearch) remain two-dimensional and inherently confusing to navigate. As soon as the user chooses to dive more deeply into one relative’s additional family, they leave the view they were in and cannot easily navigate back, or even see themselves in context any longer. Similarly, image archiving programs (such as Apple Photos, Shutterfly) or AmazonPhotos) are simplistic and rely on a …

Theses

Within the past several decades, Chinese people's living conditions are getting better because of the quick development in the Chinese economy. People are now paying more and more attention to children's artistic accomplishments in China. Therefore, more and more parents choose to let their children start learning musical instruments when they are young. However, the first step to learn an instrument is learning how to read and understand different note values and basic rhythm patterns. For example, in China, the traditional way of teaching basic rhythmic patterns is that the teacher demonstrates the basic rhythm pattern to a group of …

Pal: Building Trust In High Stakes Service Provider Relationships, Belinda Chang

Theses

The rise of on-demand economies has forced consumers to increasingly rely on evaluating service providers through a digital medium. Research has found that Americans’ trust in others has declined over the past several decades, while their trust in strangers from on-demand sharing economies is contrastingly high. In many cases however, the trust goes too far, resulting in negative or even dangerous experiences for both the service provider and customer.

One area where digital trust is being widely implemented is in online marketplaces for pet care services. Popular sites and mobile applications like Rover and Wag provide on-demand dog walking and …

Simulation Of Dongba Art Style Painting, Wenhua Qian, Xu Dan, Xu Jin, He Lei, Zhang Bo Jul 2020

Simulation Of Dongba Art Style Painting, Wenhua Qian, Xu Dan, Xu Jin, He Lei, Zhang Bo

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: An interactive technique that can generate the Dongba art paintings from 2D images is proposed. A Dongba painting line drawing system is designed and developed which adopts the interactive selection method to obtain the smooth and continuous line drawings. To produce the foreground image of the Dongba styles, a multi-frequency noise integral convolution algorithm is utilized to simulate the block texture color of the Dongba paintings. Texture synthesis algorithm is used to generate the image of large sizes from samples to simulate the background image. Based on the layer-mapping technique and local color transmission methods, the final artistic style …

Recent growth in deep learning and computer vision has opened up many opportunities for advanced intelligent systems. While the dataset quality plays a crucial role in the training phase and also affects the performance of a model, creating a reliable and diverse dataset appears to be challenging. Therefore, data augmentation can be used as a preprocessing step with a view to tackling the problem. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive analysis on different augmentation strategies to investigate their impact on vehicle detection in top-down videos captured by drones. Our experiments show that by adding similar data, randomly rotating and …

Parental Hearing Status And Sign Language Use As Predictors Of English Literacy Outcomes For Deaf Children In A Bilingual Educational Setting, Sarah E. Kimbley Jul 2020

Parental Hearing Status And Sign Language Use As Predictors Of English Literacy Outcomes For Deaf Children In A Bilingual Educational Setting, Sarah E. Kimbley

Theses

Deaf children in the United States are not achieving age-appropriate literacy in English. Nearly 90-95% of deaf infants are born to hearing parents who do not know American Sign Language (ASL). These deaf children are experiencing limited access to a spoken language and as a result do not develop skills needed to be prepared for academic learning because language acquisition during the sensitive period in development is crucial for the development of literacy skills. However, 5-10% of deaf children have deaf parents who use ASL. Studies show correlations between higher ASL fluency and higher English literacy scores in deaf children …

Self-Awareness: A Dynamic Poster Design About Self-Awareness Child Development, Shuaiqi Xiong Jul 2020

Self-Awareness: A Dynamic Poster Design About Self-Awareness Child Development, Shuaiqi Xiong

Theses

Self-awareness is a psychological state in which we see ourselves truthfully and objectively through introspection and reflection. As 90s generation, we are the newest generation of “Chinese-style” individualism, but most of us do not have knowledge of self-awareness. We probably do not acknowledge our strengths and weaknesses, do not accept ourselves, and have no sense of what we do and others think of us. According to our research” says organizational psychologist and researcher Tasha Eurich, “with thousands of people from all around the world, 95 percent of people believe that they’re self-aware, but only about 10 to 15 percent really …

The Role Of Designers In Promoting Healthy Masculinity With An Approach To Stopping Violence Against Women And Girls, Fatemeh Abolbashari Jul 2020

The Role Of Designers In Promoting Healthy Masculinity With An Approach To Stopping Violence Against Women And Girls, Fatemeh Abolbashari

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While awareness about violence against women and girls is growing, there is still a lack of evidence about what changes behavior to prevent it from happening. As a graphic designer, I wanted to find the root problem of this issue and work towards a solution. Through my research and questioning, I concluded that this problem begins with men’s thoughts on hierarchy, language, and behavior, and supported by a prevalence of toxic masculinity in men’s culture.

Where does this violence come from? What has society done to raise this kind of man? Violence against women and girls is being couched in …

Connecting Meaningful Moments: Exploring Empathy Through Storytelling, Samantha Maida Jul 2020

Connecting Meaningful Moments: Exploring Empathy Through Storytelling, Samantha Maida

Theses

As individuals transition through life, it is growing more and more difficult for everyone to live in the same world when perceptions of situations are skewed. Each individuals’ perception is colored by their life’s experiences which give rise to a distorted view of the world, creating biases, and affirming that our perception is a product of our past that is pushing forward into our future. The more technology promotes isolation and damages in-person communication, the more individuals are growing less aware of those around them, and how their experiences, and life events affect the way they view and respond to …

Unwrap Citation, Altmetric, And Mendeley Status Of Highly Cited Articles In The Top-Tier Library And Information Science Journals, Yingqi Tang, Hungwei Tseng, Charlcie Vann

Research, Publications & Creative Work

Citation count is a quantitative method of measuring the impact of a research work. A higher citation count may indicate that the research work receives more attention among peers which could mean that the research contributes value to that discipline of literature. Citation count sums the number of times that an article is referenced by other authors. Tracking citations is important; however, the citation impact only tells a part of the story from academic researchers who conduct and publish research works. The impact of the publication on leisure readers and non-publishing readers are ignored. Furthermore, it is difficult to set …

Currently, Americans are suffering from stress; therefore, consumers have a high interest and demand in beverages that provide relaxation and stress relief. As a naturally relaxing drink, tea is becoming popular in the United States. However, people have associated tea with relaxation by experiencing the various steps of the brewing and drinking process. In this article, market research and a content analysis were conducted to evaluate the existing tea products in the U.S. market. The result reveals a vital market gap: there is no ready-to-drink tea product for tea drinkers to relieve stress, even though tea is the best positioned …

Digital Stories Students Tell: An Exploration Of Doctoral Sla Students’ Beliefs About Storytelling And Educational Technology, Patrick Mannion

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Educational technology (ET) plays a major role in second/foreign (L2) language teaching and learning. Some factors influencing the ways in which teachers employ ET in L2 education are the teachers’ personal beliefs about how teachers and students should use ET to learn target languages. To develop a better understanding of influences on L2 teachers’ ET-related subjective positions, a need exists to explore the ET-related perceptions and beliefs of current and future teacher educators who are, or will be, responsible for the design and implementation of curricula and learning activities in teacher education programs. In these teacher education programs, future teachers …

Cultural Heritage And User Interface Design, Narges Tavakoli

LSU Master's Theses

This study centers around localizing the user interface and experience design of digital products considering the culture of the audience and their visual heritage. Even though it seems the internet has made the distance between developing and advanced countries less than before, there are still fundamental differences between people’s beliefs and expectations. As a graphic designer who is based in The United States and is from Iran, I noticed the digital products (web, mobile applications) produced in Iran disregard the Iranian’s specific needs and emulate western patterns. So, I researched the dissimilarities between the two countries by using Greet Hofstede’s …
