The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar
The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar
Faculty Publications
New areas of research on veterans are emerging as the field of veterans studies develops and grows. Yet gaps remain in interdisciplinary research efforts on veterans. The research available across disciplines is still too fragmented to coalesce into a full-fledged field of veteran studies, as other categorical, area, and identity fields of study have done so. By surveying research literature of multiple disciplines used in the curricula of higher education-level veteran study programs, this article presents a thematic and integrative review of the state of research contributing to the growing field of veterans studies. Discussion follows about research emerging from …

Entangling Manila’S Seams, Patrick De Garcia
Architecture Thesis Prep
Manila, Philippines is a city fragmented into slums and upper-class enclaves. The adjacency of their separated development contributes to intensifying class-relations; each side is fearful of the other. Symbolic manifestations of the border are made apparent due to economic inaccessibility, emphasizing social stratification. This project is interested in blurring the boundaries maintaining social segregation to enhance public spaces’ quality, specifically through redeveloping the shopping mall.

“Urban Corridor”: Growing The Connective Tissue Of Nashville, Lindsey Brown
Architecture Thesis Prep
Nashville is undergoing mass-gentrification, and certain marginalized groups are disconnected by infrastructure or distance from basic needs and resources. Architecture can reconnect underserved communities in order to empower them to participate culturally and reclaim autonomy over their community. Through this thesis, architecture can connect the city through the development of infrastructure that (1) encourages tourist exploration out of the inner ring, (2) encourages more sustainable transportation by visitors and residents, (3) increases visitor and resident access to resources through the incorporation of program to make an “active infrastructure”, and (4) highlights the wide variety of cultures in Nashville.

35th Anniversary History Book, Collin College
35th anniversary
More than 35 years ago, a small group of community members gathered in a Frisco coffee shop and talked about the need for a community college in Collin County. As a result of that early discussion, Collin College has grown from part-time faculty teaching evening college classes inside area high school classrooms to a renowned higher education institution with five campuses and four centers serving a growing community.
For more information regarding the history of Collin College, see the 35th Anniversary Collection.

Proposing A Constructivist Approach To Resolving Trade Conflicts Under The African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (Afcfta): A Cross-Jurisdictional Analysis, Oluwayesi Sanni
LLM Theses
Essentially a research of an interdisciplinary nature, this thesis seeks to carefully combine budding thoughts from two different areas of scholarship in order to present a unique underlying perspective. On the one hand, there is the study of conflict and its resolution from such intrinsic standpoint as to appreciate it as constitutive of the Society with the aim of achieving more wholesome outcomes that accentuates the uniqueness of each society. On the other hand, the recent coming to force of AfCFTA has left so much for scholars to grapple with, including how its dispute settlement regime could reflect more on …

From Epistemological Pragmatism To Educational Pluralism, Matthew B. Etherington
From Epistemological Pragmatism To Educational Pluralism, Matthew B. Etherington
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
Much of K-12 and higher education today reflects John Dewey’s pragmatic vision of education. Pragmatism as an epistemology has utility such as the ability to solve real concrete problems; however Dewey’s vision lacks comprehensiveness because it privileges scientific knowledge over other types of knowledge. Consequently, Dewey’s epistemological pragmatism cannot accommodate all types of knowledge learners and their traditions. For schools to be inclusive of all learners today they must move away from Dewey’s epistemological pragmatism and adopt educational pluralism.
Minority Students In University Remediation: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Their High School And First Semester College Academic Experiences, Savannah L. Kelly
Minority Students In University Remediation: A Phenomenological Analysis Of Their High School And First Semester College Academic Experiences, Savannah L. Kelly
Journal of Contemporary Research in Education
The existence of remedial curriculum at four-year universities remains a well-established, albeit controversial, component of contemporary higher education. Incoming students are required to enroll in postsecondary remedial coursework as a direct result of standardized test scores. It is well established in the literature, however, that minority students both underperform on standardized tests and are also overrepresented in remedial courses. This qualitative study explored the intersections of minority students’ high school academic experiences with their first-semester university academic experiences. The sample included eight minority students who were each enrolled in three remedial and at least one non-remedial course at a public, …

Exposure To Urbanized Poverty And Attitude Change: A Longitudinal Case Study On Service-Learning With Rural Undergraduate Criminal Justice Students, April Terry Ph.D., Ashley Lockwood
Exposure To Urbanized Poverty And Attitude Change: A Longitudinal Case Study On Service-Learning With Rural Undergraduate Criminal Justice Students, April Terry Ph.D., Ashley Lockwood
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Criminal justice departments recognize the value of connecting students to real-world problems through service-learning activities. Yet, challenges exist in exposing students to diverse populations. The current study stepped outside the classroom, involving an extra-curricular group of criminal justice students, in a unique service-learning project. Students from a rurally located university traveled to the most poverty-stricken area in Los Angeles, California, known as Skid Row. Students partnered with The Burrito Project, making and serving 950 burritos to people living on the streets. To assess the impact on exposure to poverty, students completed a pre and post-test utilizing the Undergraduate Perceptions of …

Puerto Rican Citizen Voting-Age Population In 2019, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
Puerto Rican Citizen Voting-Age Population In 2019, Carlos Vargas-Ramos
CUNY Centro, The Center for Puerto Rican Studies
The Puerto Rican population that is eligible to register to vote in the United States—because they are citizens of the United States and 18 years of age or older—continued to grow in 2019. According to an analysis of recently released survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Puerto Rican population in the United States that is potentially able to participate in the elections is more than four million.
While nationally Puerto Ricans represented 1.7 percent of the voting-eligible population, this proportion varied by state, raging between 1 percent in Ohio and nearly 8 percent in Connecticut, among the states …

Drawing Ambulatory Cartographies: Understanding Urban Experience Through Walking, Bonnie Yu
Drawing Ambulatory Cartographies: Understanding Urban Experience Through Walking, Bonnie Yu
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis contends that the act of walking, as a way of seeing, being, and understanding in the city, can be a form of urban intervention that enables the transformation of space by allowing individuals to imbue spaces with meaning. The act of walking, in conjunction with mapping practices, can be a critical tool for understanding urban space, acting as a nomadic architecture that works to subvert and smooth the striated space of the city.
This project will investigate the ways in which urban landscape representation, in particular the processes and performances of walking-based mapping practices, can reveal and assert …
