The Effect Of Program Staffing Difficulties On Changes In Dynamic Risk And Reoffending Among Juvenile Offenders In Residential Placement, Kevin T. Wolff, Katherine E. Limoncelli, Michael T. Baglivio
Publications and Research
Recently there has been growing concern regarding the staffing challenges that plague the U.S. correctional system. This study examines whether staffing challenges within residential facilities are associated with changes in dynamic risk and the likelihood of reoffending among a sample of serious juvenile offenders returning to the community from residential placement. Using administrative data on 2,022 youth who completed a court-imposed placement, in combination with information drawn from a provider’s human resources database, we employ several analytical techniques to untangle the effects of staffing difficulties on youth outcomes. Results indicate that the rate of unscheduled absences was associated with changes …

Using The World Café Methodology To Support Community-Centric Research And Practice In Library And Information Science, Vanessa Kitzie, Jocelyn Pettigrew, Travis L. Wagner, Nick Vera
Faculty Publications
The World Café (TWC) methodology is a form of action research that develops collective knowledge among individuals and communities to address shared problems. TWC can complement LIS research and practice that is increasingly participatory and community centric. The potentials and pitfalls for TWC are illustrated by ongoing research examining public library service to LGBTQIA+ communities for health information. The authors used TWC in a community forum between LGBTQIA+ community leaders and librarians/paraprofessionals in [name removed for blind review]. Per TWC conventions, participants engaged in day-long rotating café-style table conversations that encouraged new ideas and collective dialog. Discussion centered on two …

It Starts At Home: Infusing Radical Empathy Into Graduate Education, Nicole A. Cooke, Kellee E. Warren, Molly Brown, Athena Jackson
Faculty Publications
This interview features a conversation between a library and information science educator (Cooke) and three archival and special collections professionals with varying levels of experience in the field (Warren, Brown, and Jackson). Among the goals of this frank conversation is to highlight the lived experiences of practicing archivists and educators and discuss why it is becoming increasingly important to talk about empathy, diversity, equity, and inclusion in greater context. As part of that context, we must discuss the need to continuously infuse these values into graduate education, professional development, research, writing, and peer mentoring. A Critical Imaginal Hermeneutics Approach To Explore Unconscious Influences On Professional Practices: A Ricoeur And Jung Partnership, Rosa Bologna, Franziska Trede, Narelle Patton
A Critical Imaginal Hermeneutics Approach To Explore Unconscious Influences On Professional Practices: A Ricoeur And Jung Partnership, Rosa Bologna, Franziska Trede, Narelle Patton
The Qualitative Report
Professional relationships are at the heart of professional practice. Qualitative studies exploring professional practice relationships are typically positioned in either the social constructivist (interpretive) paradigm where the aim is to explore actors’ subjective understandings of their relationships and relational practices, or in the critical paradigm where the aim is to reveal objective unconscious structures and hidden power plays influencing actors’ practices. This paper introduces critical imaginal hermeneutics as a systemic philosophical and methodological approach situated on the juncture of the social constructivist and critical paradigms where the dual aim is to explore both actors’ subjective understanding and meaning-making processes associated …
An Exploration Of Pediatricians’ Personal Value On Mental Health: Experience With Integrated Healthcare And Its Impact On Physicians’ Lives, Bridget Anton, Jason D. Reynolds 4858637
An Exploration Of Pediatricians’ Personal Value On Mental Health: Experience With Integrated Healthcare And Its Impact On Physicians’ Lives, Bridget Anton, Jason D. Reynolds 4858637
The Qualitative Report
An integrated healthcare model incorporates behavioral health services into a medical setting to address patients’ physical, emotional, and behavioral healthcare concerns. The integrated healthcare model has been associated with positive patient satisfaction and health outcomes, yet limited studies have examined, using qualitative methods, physicians’ experiences of working alongside behavioral health consultants (BHCs) in integrated healthcare settings. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with pediatricians (N=4) working in an integrated healthcare model. Participants shared that as pediatricians they received personal, educational, and organizational benefits from an integrated healthcare model. Pediatricians also reported increased knowledge in effectively addressing mental health concerns for …

Bourdieu And Jung: A Thought Partnership To Explore Personal, Social, And Collective Unconscious Influences On Professional Practices, Rosa Bologna, Franziska Trede, Narelle Patton
The Qualitative Report
This paper introduces a thought partnership between Pierre Bourdieu and Carl Jung used to explore clinical play therapists’ understanding and critical reflexivity of unconscious influences on their relational practices with parents. The partnership is situated within a broader methodological partnership between Paul Ricoeur and Jung discussed by the authors in another paper in this issue. The purpose of the Bourdieu and Jung partnership is to design a comprehensive theoretical tool kit that enables the exploration of the interrelated nature of personal, social, and collective unconscious influences on professional practices. The paper discusses seven Bourdieusian and ten Jungian thinking tools and …

Post Postblack: Rethinking Contemporary Black Art In 2020 Art Culture, Brooke Finister
McNair Research Journal SJSU
For this study, I will be exploring the importance of advocacy in the art culture community. My research question is: Do we still need a postblack lens to look at black art and content? Historically, the black arts community’s perspective following the civil rights era and leading to the rise of the Black Arts Movement had been left out of exhibition spaces. I intend to evaluate the impact of arts foundations and organizations that contributed to the success of artists and curators within New York City from the late 1960s onward. In the 21st century we have much more inclusive …

Journal of Law and Social Policy
Poor conditions of confinement and human rights violations have been commonplace at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre (OCDC) since it opened in the early 1970s. Recently, the deplorable treatment of provincial prisoners at OCDC has been documented in reports by the Ontario Ombudsperson, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Independent Review of Ontario Corrections, the Community Advisory Board (established in 2014), the OCDC Task Force (established in 2016) and coronial inquests. Despite the avalanche of recommendations flowing from these reform-oriented interventions, pressing human rights issues persist at the facility—ranging from inedible food to inadequate health care that has contributed to preventable …

Journal of Law and Social Policy
This article investigates the recently passed Bill C-83, which aims to reduce harms caused by segregating people with mental health issues. Next, legislative oversight for federal prisons and provincial jails is described, followed by an overview of ongoing reforms. Here, a distinction between federal prisons and provincial jails is made in order to explore the different legislation governing …
Intergenerational Imprisonment: Resistance And Resilience In Indigenous Communities, Linda Mussell
Intergenerational Imprisonment: Resistance And Resilience In Indigenous Communities, Linda Mussell
Journal of Law and Social Policy
The recent National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (the National Inquiry) identified “the ongoing criminalization of Indigenous women as … another iteration of residential schools or the Sixties Scoop.” Embracing these findings, this article aims to highlight the hidden and complex intergenerational and colonial nature of confinement for Indigenous Peoples in Canada. Inspired by a holistic approach used by certain Indigenous scholars, this article makes an argument for viewing imprisonment as a harmful colonial tool that has been used against Indigenous Peoples in different ways throughout colonial history. In other words, imprisonment in prisons follows in …

What Christian Leaders Can Learn From Lean, Andrew Parris, Don Pope
What Christian Leaders Can Learn From Lean, Andrew Parris, Don Pope
Management Sciences
The term “Lean” was coined by researchers at MIT in the 1980s to describe the methods developed by Toyota in post-war Japan to first survive, then thrive, and ultimately dominate the global automotive industry. Beyond shop floor techniques for setup reduction or just-in-time inventory control, Lean evolved into a management system with principles that apply in any context. This paper presents the foundational principles of Lean and explores their striking similarities with biblical teachings. These similarities are both noteworthy and surprising, since Lean was developed in a non-Christian cultural and religious context. We contend that Christian leaders can learn from …

Angry White Men On Campus: Theoretical Perspectives And Recommended Responses, Kyle C. Ashlee, Pietro A. Sasso, Christina Witkowicki
Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs
In this article, the authors explore a rise in violent protest among white college men, theoretical interpretations of this trend, and recommendations that student affairs educators can implement to address the harmful acts of white male on campus. By examining hegemonic masculinity, the theory of dispossession, anomic protest masculinity, and white men’s disengagement in college, student affairs professionals can begin to understand the larger contemporary trend of student activism among white college men. Moreover, evaluating common strategies for engaging college men, including behavior-only approaches, bad-dogging accountability practices, and white privilege pedagogy, educators can gain perspective on how current responses in …

Hindi popular cinema, marked with sartorial, visual and material excess, has paradoxically portrayed acquisition of wealth or unregulated consumption as inimical to the Chaturvarga philosophy, or the idea that an individual should seek four goods – Artha (wealth), Kama (pleasure), Dharma (duty) and Moksha (renunciation) - in moderation in order to lead a balanced life. While its visual imagery is largely oriented towards Artha or pleasure, Dharma, in its meaning as duty, has been the prime motivation of Hindi or Bombay cinema’s characters and structures the cinematic conflict and action. However, Hindi cinema appears to have undergone a phase-shift in …
