Exposure To Urbanized Poverty And Attitude Change: A Longitudinal Case Study On Service-Learning With Rural Undergraduate Criminal Justice Students, April Terry Ph.D., Ashley Lockwood
Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Criminal justice departments recognize the value of connecting students to real-world problems through service-learning activities. Yet, challenges exist in exposing students to diverse populations. The current study stepped outside the classroom, involving an extra-curricular group of criminal justice students, in a unique service-learning project. Students from a rurally located university traveled to the most poverty-stricken area in Los Angeles, California, known as Skid Row. Students partnered with The Burrito Project, making and serving 950 burritos to people living on the streets. To assess the impact on exposure to poverty, students completed a pre and post-test utilizing the Undergraduate Perceptions of …

Many refugee and immigrant youth face significant adversity, pre- and post-migration, as well as during their migratory journey. Although these youth demonstrate considerable resilience, there is also an opportunity to bolster coping skills and adjustment with group-based interventions in schools. We utilized a mixed-methods approach to describe the impacts of one such program, as experienced by youth (n=19). The program is a ten-session strengths-based resilience intervention that promotes relaxation skills, healthy coping, communication, and problem-solving. There is also one individual session focused on helping each participant share their journey narrative. Youth from six intervention groups participated in this study through …

Colcha Circle: A Stitch In Northern New Mexico Culture, Olimpia Newman, Rebecca Abrams
Colcha Circle: A Stitch In Northern New Mexico Culture, Olimpia Newman, Rebecca Abrams
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
Colcha embroidery is folk art, characteristic of northern New Mexico history, traditions, and a form of cultural expression that has not been researched and documented sufficiently. It has been practiced in private homes and small circles as a result of commissions or economic development programs, as has also been the case in the San Luis Valley, Colorado. Despite the exposure offered by local markets and demonstrations during events in New Mexico, the embroidery is in many ways an unknown technique, even to the next generation.
This video captures a candid discussion among eleven colcha artists, some of whom are entering …

Violence Against Teachers: Principal Strategies To Reduce Teacher Victimization, Annette Cummings
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to identify strategies implemented by school administrators to reduce student-driven violence toward teachers. Participants of this case study included nine secondary school principals and assistant principals. All the principals had a minimum of two years of experience in campus administration and possessed an administrator’s certification. Participants were asked questions based on a guided protocol to determine the best strategies to reduce teacher victimization. The researcher interviewed all participants using Skype, a videoconferencing and recording computer program; transcribed the data; member-checked; and then analyzed the interview transcripts for common themes. The findings indicate …

The articles are arranged based on qualitative research with descriptive methods. Although the attachment system that was built was adapted to the use of the device, but working mothers always maintain the quality of their relationship by interacting …

The Three-Legged Stool Of Voter Engagement, Addie Sandler, Mary E. Hylton, Jason Ostrander, Tanya R. Smith
School of Social Work Faculty Publications
Disparities in voter turnout have increased significantly over the past four decades. Members of historically oppressed groups, those who are low-income, and or who have lower levels of education vote at significantly lower rates than white, wealthy and or more educated community members. These disparities correlate directly to political power and the eventual allocation of resources by elected officials. Therefore, eliminating these disparities through targeted voter engagement with client groups is particularly important for the profession of social work. This article describes the conceptualization of voter engagement as a three-legged stool, consisting of voter registration, regular voting, and basing voting …
Shelter Mobility, And The Voucher Program, Ezra Rosser
Shelter Mobility, And The Voucher Program, Ezra Rosser
Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals
What is to be done about the poor and about poor neighborhoods? When it comes to housing policy, the current hope is that the Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly the Section 8 Voucher Program) can provide an or ambitiously the answer to this perennial societal question. By piggybacking on the private rental market, the voucher program supposedly has numerous advantages over traditional, project-based, public housing. Not only is it less costly to house poor people in privately owned units compared to the cost of constructing and maintaining public housing, but the voucher program also offers the possibility of deconcentrating the …

During Homecoming, we celebrated the golden anniversary of two of our health sciences programs, as 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of our Dental Hygiene program. It was also 50 years ago that our undergraduate program in Environmental Health was accredited. This program was the first in the nation to earn full accreditation from the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council. This fall, we also recognized the 50th anniversary of the Zeta Omega chapter of Sigma Chi. Our campus also had the opportunity to be part …
