Details Matter: A Quality Improvement Study On Screening For Intimate Partner Violence At A Labor And Delivery Hospital, Nancy P. Correa
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: It is estimated that one in three women will experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their life time. It is recommended that healthcare professional screen patients for IPV, but screening rates and positive disclosure rates remain low. Best practices for screening for IPV in the healthcare setting include screening alone, showing compassion and non-judgement, asking specific and direct questions, and using a framing statement before the screening occurs.
Methods: A review of the screening protocol for IPV at a labor and delivery hospital revealed high screening rates (88%), low positive disclosure rates (0.43%), and that some best practices were …

Factors Influencing The Implementation Of Social Determinants Of Health Screening And Referral Processes In Pediatric Settings Serving Medically Complex Patients, Katelyn K. Jetelina, Patricia Rodriguez, Oluwaseun K. Oke, M. Sunil Mathew, Susan Schoppa, Quiera Booker-Nubie, Sarah E. Messiah
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Background: Equitable healthcare outcomes are compromised in the absence of strong medical care and social services linkages. In May 2019, Children’s Health, the largest health system for pediatric care in North Texas, initiated a three-pronged social determinants of health (SDOH) quality improvement (QI) project that included: 1) baseline and ongoing clinical team training; 2) implementation of an electronic health record (EHR)-embedded SDOH screening tool; and 3) patient referrals to community resources in three inpatient hospital units and one outpatient specialty clinic serving medically complex patients. The purpose of the study is to identify hospital unit/clinic-level implementation factors associated with …
Embodied Liminality And Gendered State Violence: Artivist Expressions In The Mmiw Movement, Rachel Presley
Embodied Liminality And Gendered State Violence: Artivist Expressions In The Mmiw Movement, Rachel Presley
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines four multimedia artivist artefacts at the nexus of the missing and murdered Indigenous women’s (MMIW) crisis. I position artivism as a decolonial methodology that radically alters our attunement to embodied aesthetics, contending that feminist artivists employ a radical imagination to liberate the body/body politic. Decoloniality must be an enacted praxis, and for many Indigenous feminists, creative and artistic practices provide a transformative pathway towards “making” and “living out” one’s indigeneity as knowledge and tradition-bearers. Each of the four exhibits illustrate the ways in which settler politics are narrated and resisted through and by the Indigenous body. My …

Addressing Immediate Public Coronavirus (Covid-19) Concerns Through Social Media: Utilizing Reddit's Ama As A Framework For Public Engagement With Science, Deborah Lai, Daniel Wang, Joshua Calvano, Ali S. Raja, Shuhan He
Student Publications
COVID-19 has highlighted an opportunity for medical professionals to engage in online Public Engagement with Science (PES). Currently a popular platform for PES is Reddit. Reddit provides an Ask Me Anything (AMA) format for subject matter experts to answer questions asked by the public. On March 11, 2020, from 2:00 to 4:00pm EST, two Emergency Department physicians from Massachusetts General Hospital hosted an AMA session on coronavirus. We retroactively conducted an analysis of the questions and answers from this AMA session in order to better understand the public's concerns around coronavirus and identify future opportunities for medical experts to leverage …

In 2018 and 2019, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Illinois, and California enacted laws creating automatic, universal, at-birth CDA policies, and in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic halted the progress of CDA bills in Missouri. Several states previously adopted CDA policies by administrative rule. This Policy Summary presents insights from four state treasurers based on their direct experience developing statewide CDA policy through legislation.
On July 16, 2020, the treasurers and other professionals gathered virtually for “All Children Can Reach Their Potential: A CDA Conference.” In a panel discussion moderated by Missouri State Treasurer Fitzpatrick, Pennsylvania State Treasurer Joe Torsella, …

Using The World Café Methodology To Support Community-Centric Research And Practice In Library And Information Science, Vanessa Kitzie, Jocelyn Pettigrew, Travis L. Wagner, Nick Vera
Faculty Publications
The World Café (TWC) methodology is a form of action research that develops collective knowledge among individuals and communities to address shared problems. TWC can complement LIS research and practice that is increasingly participatory and community centric. The potentials and pitfalls for TWC are illustrated by ongoing research examining public library service to LGBTQIA+ communities for health information. The authors used TWC in a community forum between LGBTQIA+ community leaders and librarians/paraprofessionals in [name removed for blind review]. Per TWC conventions, participants engaged in day-long rotating café-style table conversations that encouraged new ideas and collective dialog. Discussion centered on two …

It Starts At Home: Infusing Radical Empathy Into Graduate Education, Nicole A. Cooke, Kellee E. Warren, Molly Brown, Athena Jackson
Faculty Publications
This interview features a conversation between a library and information science educator (Cooke) and three archival and special collections professionals with varying levels of experience in the field (Warren, Brown, and Jackson). Among the goals of this frank conversation is to highlight the lived experiences of practicing archivists and educators and discuss why it is becoming increasingly important to talk about empathy, diversity, equity, and inclusion in greater context. As part of that context, we must discuss the need to continuously infuse these values into graduate education, professional development, research, writing, and peer mentoring. Espousing and implementing an ethics of …

An Exploration Of Pediatricians’ Personal Value On Mental Health: Experience With Integrated Healthcare And Its Impact On Physicians’ Lives, Bridget Anton, Jason D. Reynolds 4858637
The Qualitative Report
An integrated healthcare model incorporates behavioral health services into a medical setting to address patients’ physical, emotional, and behavioral healthcare concerns. The integrated healthcare model has been associated with positive patient satisfaction and health outcomes, yet limited studies have examined, using qualitative methods, physicians’ experiences of working alongside behavioral health consultants (BHCs) in integrated healthcare settings. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews with pediatricians (N=4) working in an integrated healthcare model. Participants shared that as pediatricians they received personal, educational, and organizational benefits from an integrated healthcare model. Pediatricians also reported increased knowledge in effectively addressing mental health concerns for …

Building The Plane While Flying It: School And College Policy Responses To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Olivia M. Boggs, Brittany Bellamy, Julie Eavenson, Tiffany Mcbride
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
The quandary of how to deliver quality instruction in the midst of a virulent and unabated pandemic for which there are no medications or vaccination is the greatest educational dilemma of our age. Using modified interpretive policy analysis (IPA), the paper reports the results of a study that examined the challenges, responsiveness, and efficacy of policies initiated during the early outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic in three sectors of the education community: (1) Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), (2) public schools offering services to disabled students, and (3) research universities in four geographic locations. Specific attention is given to …
The Impact Of Client Culture On Termination Of The Counseling Relationship, Colin F. Freeland
The Impact Of Client Culture On Termination Of The Counseling Relationship, Colin F. Freeland
Georgia Educational Research Association Conference
Counseling is a process that evokes often evokes strong emotions in clients. When counseling is effective and rapport is established correctly, clients become attached to their counselors in deep and meaningful ways. The depth of attachment in this dynamic can lead to negative affect when approaching the termination stage of this relationship; these endings can also provide opportunities for clients to experience growth and transformation. Elements of grief can surface with the dissolution of relationships; further, cultural influences impact experiences of grieving and the continuation or finality of those bonds. Few studies have explored clients’ subjective experiences with the ending …
No One Is Disposable: Towards Feminist Models Of Transformative Justice, Hannah Barrie
No One Is Disposable: Towards Feminist Models Of Transformative Justice, Hannah Barrie
Journal of Law and Social Policy
This article looks toward a future of prison abolition by arguing for feminist models of Transformative Justice (TJ), a strategy that responds to harm by aiming to transform the conditions that make violence possible. Autoethnographic reflections of the author’s experience volunteering with Circles of Support and Accountability (COSA), a TJ initiative based on friendship and accountability working to reintegrate people incarcerated for perpetrating sexualized violence back into communities, are combined with a critical analysis of the existing literature about TJ principles and initiatives. Insights from the author’s experience with COSA are examined for their potential use in a feminist TJ …

COVID 19 interacts with white supremacy, economic insecurity and politcal terrorism, adversely affecting many people and populations. This article considers the consequences of these four interacting pandemics and suggests that social work, particularly clinical social work, requires radical revisioning and decolonizing to be able to ethically and adequately serve affected people.

A Narrative Analysis Of Psychological Adjustments Of Professionals Transitioning To Work Following Cerebral Vascular Accident (Cva), Mabel Munachiso Korie
Theses & Dissertations
This research study was a narrative analysis of the psychological adjustment of professionals transitioning to work after a cerebral vascular accident, commonly known as a stroke. The purpose of this research was to explore the psychological adjustment of professionals who returned to work after a stroke following their subsequent rehabilitation. This has been an important subject because stroke research predominantly addresses older adults, which means that there has not been enough information on the experience of affected working-age professionals. The Roy Adaptation Model and Social Cognitive Theory were the frameworks for the study. The data collected were from audio-recorded and …

The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar
The State Of Research In Veterans Studies: A Systematic Literature Review, Leonard Lira, Janani Chandrasekar
Faculty Publications
New areas of research on veterans are emerging as the field of veterans studies develops and grows. Yet gaps remain in interdisciplinary research efforts on veterans. The research available across disciplines is still too fragmented to coalesce into a full-fledged field of veteran studies, as other categorical, area, and identity fields of study have done so. By surveying research literature of multiple disciplines used in the curricula of higher education-level veteran study programs, this article presents a thematic and integrative review of the state of research contributing to the growing field of veterans studies. Discussion follows about research emerging from …
