Sensory Integration Therapy For Students With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jennifer Bell

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Children with autism spectrum disorders often struggle socially and emotionally in the classroom setting due to overstimulation. The purpose of this literature review is to synthesize research on the effects of Dr. A. Jean Ayre's sensory integration therapy intervention for students with an autism spectrum disorder, specifically as they are applied in the classroom. Ayres was an occupational therapist, educational psychologist, and an advocate for individuals with special needs. Dr. Ayres developed the sensory integration therapy approach, or SIT, in the 1970s, and SIT has since been used by hundreds of occupational therapists around the world. Overall, sensory integration therapy …

Treating The Trauma: Evaluating The Perceived Effectiveness Of Narrative Therapy On Individuals Who Have Experienced Trauma, Emily Faith Oct 2020

Treating The Trauma: Evaluating The Perceived Effectiveness Of Narrative Therapy On Individuals Who Have Experienced Trauma, Emily Faith

Honors Theses

Abstract

Narrative therapy (NT) has been utilized by many clinicians and found to be effective as an intervention with clients facing a wide range of issues. Focusing on one’s narrative has been given attention in many academic disciplines (e.g., social sciences, humanities and healthcare) and especially among popular written media and academic journals. Despite this attention and the various studies on its efficacy, there is a lack of research on client and non-client perceptions of this therapy. This ethnographic study’s purpose was to compare the perceived effectiveness of the NT between those who had previously participated in narrative therapy and …

The Alignment Of Student Support Services In Minnesota Pre-K-12 Public Schools, Jacqueline Trzynka Oct 2020

The Alignment Of Student Support Services In Minnesota Pre-K-12 Public Schools, Jacqueline Trzynka

Doctorate in Education

A significant amount of literature exists on student achievement, social emotional learning, student mental health, and related student developmental needs. There are recommendations and research about best practices and research around successful programs schools can utilize to address and support student needs. However, the author found in her research that there is very little, if any, research about how school districts organize and implement comprehensive systems to support these needs and even less about why they should. The research questions explore student support services structures, policies, processes and roles as they relate to supporting equitable student outcomes. The qualitative study …

School for Social Work: Faculty Publications

As a part of a larger, mixed-methods research study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 21 adults with depressive symptoms to understand the role that past health care discrimination plays in shaping help-seeking for depression treatment and receiving preferred treatment modalities. We recruited to achieve heterogeneity of racial/ethnic backgrounds and history of health care discrimination in our participant sample. Participants were Hispanic/Latino (n = 4), non-Hispanic/Latino Black (n = 8), or non-Hispanic/Latino White (n = 9). Twelve reported health care discrimination due to race/ethnicity, language, perceived social class, and/or mental health diagnosis. Health care discrimination exacerbated barriers to initiating and continuing …

Intraminority Solidarity: The Role Of Critical Consciousness, Esther Burson, Erin B. Godfrey Oct 2020

Intraminority Solidarity: The Role Of Critical Consciousness, Esther Burson, Erin B. Godfrey

Psychology: Faculty Publications

A central question in the growing field of intraminority relations is how best to promote solidarity among marginalized groups. The current article reviews existing social psychological theories of intraminority relations, with a focus on barriers to, and facilitators of, intraminority solidarity. In particular, we explore the roles of competition and identity threats in eroding solidarity, and examine how similarity perceptions, a common identity of stigma, and structural and historical attributions generate solidarity. We then suggest that critical consciousness, a theory of sociopolitical development prominent in the developmental and community psychology literatures, can integrate disparate findings and extend our understanding of …

Two Clinical Prediction Tools To Improve Tuberculosis Contact Investigation, Ruoran Li, Francesco Nordio, Chuan-Chin Huang, Carmen Contreras, Roger Calderon, Rosa Yataco, Jerome Galea, Zibiao Zhang, Mercedes C. Becerra, Leonid Lecca, Megan B. Murray

Social Work Faculty Publications

Background: Efficient contact investigation strategies are needed for the early diagnosis of TB disease and treatment of latent TB infections.

Methods: Between September 2009 and August 2012, we conducted a prospective cohort study in Lima, Peru in which we enrolled and followed 14,044 household contacts of adult pulmonary TB patients. We used information from a subset of this cohort to derive two clinical prediction tools that identify contacts of TB patients at elevated risk of progressing to active disease by training multivariable models that predict (1) co-prevalent TB among all household contacts and (2) one-year incident TB among adult contacts. …

Understanding Youth Worker Job Stress, Anne White, Alexandra Demand, Gina Mcgovern, Thomas Akiva Oct 2020

Understanding Youth Worker Job Stress, Anne White, Alexandra Demand, Gina Mcgovern, Thomas Akiva

Journal of Youth Development

Work in out-of-school learning programs can be stressful, and job stress may have cascading effects for the children and youth that attend. Fortunately, workplace supports can help decrease this stress. In this study, we aimed to understand how youth workers’ personal and work-related demands as well as supports predict on-the-job stress. We used multilevel modeling to investigate the demands and supports of a sample of 111 youth workers nested in 25 programs. Results suggested that job stress systematically varies at the program level. We found that stress at home and a negative staffing climate is associated with higher stress and …

It’S About Time: Staff Support Contacts And Mentor Volunteer Experiences, Thomas Keller, Alison Drew, Hyuny Clark-Shim, Renée Spencer Oct 2020

It’S About Time: Staff Support Contacts And Mentor Volunteer Experiences, Thomas Keller, Alison Drew, Hyuny Clark-Shim, Renée Spencer

Journal of Youth Development

Formal youth mentoring programs typically rely on volunteers to serve as mentors to young people, with training and guidance from agency staff. A fundamental program practice is to provide ongoing support and supervision to volunteer mentors by engaging in regular contact to monitor the progress of the mentoring relationship and offer guidance and encouragement. Using data from mentors (n = 504) in multiple mentoring programs (n = 55), the current study investigated how the amount of time devoted to these match support contacts was associated with mentor perceptions regarding the nature of their volunteer experience, specifically: the quality of supervision …

Mentee Voice: Mentee Perspectives Of The Effectiveness Of Youth Mentoring Programs, Rod S. Crowley, Rod S. Crowley

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of youth mentoring programs from the mentee perspective. An extant survey instrument, the Youth Strength of Relationship (YSOR) was utilized to provide data necessary to address the study’s topic and research problem. The YSOR yielded a good level of internal reliability (George & Mallery, 2016) in addressing study participant perceptions of satisfaction with the mentoring program featured in the study. A nonprobability sampling approach was adopted, featuring a convenient, purposive methodology. The study’s sample of participants were youth mentees (n= 1,183) specifically accessed from a Central Florida agency that provides …

How Can I Inform Colleagues About The Trauma Of English Learner Scholars And Create A Trauma-Sensitive Classroom For Multilingual Scholars In An Education Setting?, Kwenen Nelson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects

The research question addressed in this study was: How can I inform colleagues about the trauma of English Learners and create a trauma-sensitive classroom for multilingual scholars in an educational setting? In order to attempt to understand the complex traumas experienced by first generation immigrants, immigrants, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color populations, much research on topics such as: types of trauma, how trauma manifests in classrooms, and finding peaceful resolutions must be reviewed. The overwhelming lack of support multilingual learners receive in school settings in regard to their trauma experiences, indicates a clear need for teachers to have …

A Qualitative Study On Health Needs Of Syrian Refugees In Jordan Using Emic And Etic Views, Mitra Naseh, Natalia Liviero, Zahra Abtahi, Maryam Rafieifar, Miriam Potocky

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

The ongoing civil war in Syria has resulted in the world's largest refugee crisis since 1945. Many Syrians have lived in a protracted exile in Jordan, the neighboring country of Syria, for more than five years. Estimates suggest that by the end of 2017, around 1.4 million Syrians lived in Jordan. As the exile continues for Syrians in Jordan, this study aimed to explore what refugees perceive as their major health needs in comparison to what service providers believe is needed for refugees in Jordan. Grounded theory and thematic analyses (Braun & Clarke, 2006) were used to analyze 17 semi-structured …

A Study Of The Impact Of A University’S Program For Intellectual Disabilities On Undergraduate Students’ Perceptions And Attitudes, Tyanne N. Bailey

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

Opportunities for individuals with exceptional needs to participate in inclusive environments have increased in recent years due to the implementation of various laws. Throughout the history of education, individuals with exceptional needs were prevented from attending higher education institutions; however, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008 provided opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to attend higher education institutions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how a university’s program to assist students with intellectual disabilities successfully transition from high school to adulthood impacted undergraduate students’ perceptions and comfort level of working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. This …

The Experience Of Family Therapists Providing An In-Person Group Intervention, Responding To The Covid-19 Pandemic, And Attempting To Continue With A Comparable Intervention In A Virtual Setting, Miranda R. Gab Oct 2020

The Experience Of Family Therapists Providing An In-Person Group Intervention, Responding To The Covid-19 Pandemic, And Attempting To Continue With A Comparable Intervention In A Virtual Setting, Miranda R. Gab

University Honors Theses

Group interventions are widely used in mental health and educational settings. Studies have shown that these groups can be conducted in either in-person or virtual settings with success, though there is limited research on the delivery of synchronous, online group interventions, particularly an in-person group intervention that abruptly transitioned to telehealth delivery due to the coronavirus. This observational research aims to tell the story of how two family therapists, who served as co-facilitators for an in-person parenting intervention, transitioned to deliver the same content virtually due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing upon previous and present research in …
