Adult Depressive Disorders, Lisa Butler Apr 2020

Adult Depressive Disorders, Lisa Butler

Research Papers

The American Psychiatric Associations' Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2013) provides diagnostic criteria and characteristics specific to the numerous classifications of adult depressive disorders that many consider broad and complex, having a great deal of subtle differences in symptomology and a significant amount of overlap and consistent co-morbidity with various other mental health disorders. Therefore, the depressive condition tends to be difficult to thoroughly understand and adequately treat in clinical settings. This type of clinical conundrum can lead to misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment and interventions, leaving the client's core problems poorly-addressed and the client vulnerable to an increased …

From Isolation To Communication: Connecting Adults Who Have Hearing Loss With Their Communication Partners, Stephen D. Roberts, Nancy A. Delich

JADARA

As Baby Boomers enter the late adulthood stage of life, hearing loss continues to be one of the most prevalent, chronic, and isolating conditions facing older adults today. Research has focused on the negative consequences of hearing loss on the health and the person’s well-being, but it is equally important to recognize that hearing loss also leads to communication loss. The resulting social isolation and the collateral effects of hearing loss on the communication partner are the focus of this mixed-method study that explored the hearing loss-related quality of life for both parties. Five overarching themes emerged from the analysis, …

School Counseling And Counseling Psychology Collaboration: A Cautionary Tale, Alan W. Burkard, Theresa Kruczek, Charlene M. Alexander

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Counseling psychology and school counseling programs have been historically aligned since the inception of their respective professions. Given current trends, there appear to be differences in the foci and approach to training and professional engagement in the two disciplines. The current investigation surveyed programs in which counseling psychology and school counseling programs were housed within the same department or college to identify areas of collaboration. The survey and journal reviews revealed a divide in the areas of curriculum, service delivery, and professional organization engagement. There appeared to be better collaboration in research, although limited in scope. Although counseling psychology and …

Law Enforcement Understanding Their Impact And Building A Better Rapport With People With Disabilities (Pwd), Tashara Mccoy

Research Papers

For years, law enforcement didn’t have adequate training in knowing how to handle cases that involved people with disabilities (PWD). As an ending result, it left PWD either traumatized or dead. Officers negative impact have loved ones fearing and uncertain if calling officers would be the best decision for the situation. Several cases show where officers acted out in violence and excessive force due to fearing the unknown of what would happen. Officers approach and interactional styles are poor and in need of improvement.

Appropriate training courses are now enforced upon certain states, cities, and counties due to too many …

Reasonable Accommodation For Workers Who Are Deaf: Differences In Ada Knowledge Between Supervisors And Advocates, Hayley Stokar

JADARA

Despite the existence of the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990), workers who are deaf still struggle with reasonable accommodations in the workplace. The challenges relate, in part, to knowledge and training deficits among hearing supervisors. In order to understand the difference between supervisor knowledge and advocate knowledge around reasonable accommodation, focus groups were conducted with two populations: (1) supervisors in retail and food service who were all hearing, and (2) advocates engaged in training and education around deaf accommodation needs, who were either deaf or hearing. Findings identify similarities and disparities between the groups, highlighting that, while specific legal knowledge …

The Research Self-Efficacy, Interest In Research, And Research Mentoring Experiences Of Doctoral Students In Counselor Education, John T. Petko, Stephen A. Sivo, Glenn W. Lambie

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Doctoral programs in counselor education are believed to be developing effective researchers, yet there are few studies that examine the research constructs within counselor educator programs. The purpose of this study is to investigate a national sample of doctoral counselor education students’ research quality by measuring three constructs: 1) research self-efficacy, 2) interest in research and 3) research mentoring. A cross-sectional, correlational research design was used to test if doctoral students programs could predict these constructs. Also, the study investigated whether students’ research practices, (e.g., publishing refereed journal articles, et al.) correlated with their response levels.

Therapeutic Effects Of Building Resilience: An Observation Of Two Case Studies, Susan Stuntzner, Angela Macdonald, Michael Hartley

Counseling Faculty Publications

Resilience is an emerging area of research interest. Resilience has much relevance and applicability to persons with disabilities and to the situations lived and experienced by people with disabilities.1–3 However, few resilience interventions, specifically tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, have been developed and empirically studied. Stuntzner and Hartley3 began to change this trend with the development of a 10-module resilience intervention. Presented as a part of this article are two case studies of people who completed an initial resilience intervention pilot study conducted by Stuntzner and MacDonald.4 The case studies represent people living with varying disabilities and …

The Need For A Physical Therapy Clinic In Pucallpa, Peru, Isabella M. Sutton, Abby M. Waldek, Brylie M. Wiedmaier

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In developing countries, complications from traumatic injuries account for a significantly higher number of deaths annually compared to developed countries. Not only are traumatic injuries more likely to occur in developing countries, but limited access to quality healthcare and adequate funds to pay for services make it much more likely for individuals to be left with lifelong disabilities. With that, this community service project worked with Scalpel at the Cross (SATC), an orthopedic medical ministry based in Pucallpa, Peru to expand their ability to provide free orthopedic surgeries and physical therapy following traumatic injuries. The community service project will help …

Perceptions Of Collaboration With A Doctor Of Clinical Laboratory Science, Leah Jane Ames Jan 2020

Perceptions Of Collaboration With A Doctor Of Clinical Laboratory Science, Leah Jane Ames

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Every person in America seeks medical care at some point, trusting and relying on highly educated healthcare professionals and sophisticated technology to solve their medical problem. The majority of clinicians rely on laboratory testing to provide insight into a patient’s illness. Unfortunately, the appropriate laboratory tests are not always ordered correctly during a patient’s initial visit. A study that examined 15 years of inappropriate test utilization indicates that, on average, 20.6% of lab tests were ordered when they weren’t needed and 44.8% of lab tests that were needed were not ordered. This is considered a medical error that can lead …

School of Leadership and Education Sciences: Faculty Scholarship

Using qualitative content analysis (Cohen et al., 2007), we examined the expectations of states in the United States regarding program evaluation content for school counselor licensure. Results show that 43 states maintain some form of program evaluation expectations for licensure, up from the 19 identified by Trevisan (2000). Twenty-eight states require licensure tests that purportedly align with CACREP, ASCA, or maintain a state developed licensure test that measures program evaluation content. Twenty-one states mention alignment of their curriculum with CACREP, ASCA, or both. The program evaluation expectations are ambiguous and unconnected to best program evaluation practices articulated by the evaluation …

Effects Of An Anchored Career-Focused Curriculum On The Knowledge And Attitudes Of At-Risk High School Students, Megan E. Jones Jan 2020

Effects Of An Anchored Career-Focused Curriculum On The Knowledge And Attitudes Of At-Risk High School Students, Megan E. Jones

Theses and Dissertations--Early Childhood, Special Education, and Counselor Education

Students with disabilities (SWD) face an unfavorable employment future because many drop out of school at a disproportionate rate. The employment outlook for SWD who graduate from high school is also a concern because current studies show that only about half of them find jobs. In addition, most jobs they do find are entry level and low paying. One predictor of post-secondary success is career awareness. The purpose of this study was first to develop a curriculum especially designed for teaching career awareness of SWD and then to test its effects with a pretest-posttest randomized trial. Results indicated that the …
