Behavioral Aspects In Operational Decisions. Applied Factor Investigations On The Micro (Individual) And Meso (Cluster) Levels, Lyudmyla Starostyuk

Information Systems & Operations Management Dissertations - Archive

Normative theoretical models in operations management have been widely utilized by businesses and scientists to explain multiple phenomena. They assume that operating systems are managed by fully rational decision-makers who always choose the most profitable solution. However, decision-makers are human beings with behavioral and cognitive biases which influence their choices. In this thesis we argue that a change in the social and operating environments explains the choice deviation from the normative theoretical predictions. We present three independent studies of behavioral patterns on the individual and cluster levels. In the first study we observe the effect of human faces on the …

Implementing Adaptive Management Into A Climate Change Adaptation Strategy For A Drowning New England Salt Marsh, Danielle C. Perry, Caitlin Chaffee, Cathleen Wigand, Carol S. Thornber

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Due to climate change and other anthropogenic stressors, future conditions and impacts facing coastal habitats are unclear to coastal resource managers. Adaptive management strategies have become an important tactic to compensate for the unknown environmental conditions that coastal managers and restoration ecologists face. Adaptive management requires extensive planning and resources, which can act as barriers to achieve a successful project. These barriers also create challenges in incorporating adaptive management into climate change adaptation strategies. This case study describes and analyzes the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council's approach to overcome these challenges to implement a successful adaptive management project to …

Medical Qigong Versus Exercise On Sleep Disturbance And Quality Of Life In Breast Cancer Survivors, Elisabeth Mirenda Jun 2020

Medical Qigong Versus Exercise On Sleep Disturbance And Quality Of Life In Breast Cancer Survivors, Elisabeth Mirenda

Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses

Sleep disturbance affects nearly 30 percent of breast cancer survivors and has consequences on quality of life. Pharmacologic treatment for sleep disturbance exists, however cancer survivors are seeking alternative ways to improve outcomes. There is a need to investigate treatment modalities for sleep disturbance and quality of life in this population. Qigong is a five-dimension-based mind-body therapy that has shown to improve sleep disturbance and quality of life. There has yet to be a randomized controlled trial comparing Qigong to an active control on sleep disturbance specifically for breast cancer survivors. We propose that Qigong will be superior in improving …

Influences Of The Timing Of Extreme Precipitation On Floods In Poyang Lake, China, Xianghu Li, Qi Hu, Rong Wang, Dan Zhang, Qi Zhang

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Changes in the timing of extreme precipitation have important ramifications for public safety and storm water management, but it has not received much attention in relation to flooding. This study analyzed the changes in the timing of extreme precipitation in the Poyang Lake basin and projected its future changes for the period 2020–2099. The study also quantified the influences of changes in the timing of peak flows on lake floods based on a hydrodynamic model. The results showed that peak rainfall in the Poyang Lake basin had occurred on later dates during the period 1960–2012, and it is this change …

Analysis Of Performance Measures Of Traffic Incident Management In Utah, Mitchell Gregory Hadfield Jun 2020

Analysis Of Performance Measures Of Traffic Incident Management In Utah, Mitchell Gregory Hadfield

Theses and Dissertations

In 2009 the Federal Highway Administration published a report regarding a Focus States Initiative that had been conducted with 11 states to discuss the development of national Traffic Incident Management (TIM) standards. Performance measures were defined, and a national TIM dashboard created, but very little data has been added to the dashboard since. In this research study, performance measures of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) TIM program were analyzed. Data availability was first assessed to determine whether these performance measures could be calculated. It was determined that crash response data available from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) could be …

ABSTRACT: What Would it Take to Connect All of Greater Seattle’s Neighborhoods with Walking and Biking Trails?

Major U.S. cities have endeavored, independently of each other, over the past several decades to create greenway systems connecting residents and visitors with neighborhoods and attractions, increasing opportunities for walking and biking and reducing their reliance on vehicular traffic. Atlanta’s BeltLine--a twenty-two-mile loop of historic railroad right-of-ways encircling the city’s downtown and midtown areas, seeks to reinvent the city if transformed into a green corridor—is perhaps one of the best examples of how a Seattle Greenway might be accomplished (although Atlanta’s concerted …

INTEREST OF AMICUS CURIAE

The Boston University Center for Antiracist Research (the “Center”) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit university-based research institution that convenes researchers, scholars, and policy experts across disciplines to find novel and practical ways to understand, explain, and solve seemingly intractable problems of racial injustice and inequity. The Center’s interest in this case arises from its expertise in researching and understanding the harms of policies, practices, and actions that produce and sustain racial inequities, and in advancing antiracist alternatives that promote racial equity.

The Second Circuit’s interpretation of the so-called “favorable termination rule,” which imposes an “indications-of-innocence” standard, is …
