Adaptive Navigation Utilizing A Drone Cluster, Zach Cameron, Brendan Engh, Thomas Kambe, Aditya Krishnan
Adaptive Navigation Utilizing A Drone Cluster, Zach Cameron, Brendan Engh, Thomas Kambe, Aditya Krishnan
Interdisciplinary Design Senior Theses
The current infrastructure for drone piloting involves drones flying in a predetermined path to find an object, source, or target with a known location. Drones should be able to determine an optimal flight path mid-flight in order to find an undefined source or target given existing parameters that can be analyzed from incoming sensor data. However, a framework for such a feat is almost non-existent. Our project aims to build such a framework that allows for the control of and communication among multiple drones, called a cluster, and allows for in-flight analysis and processing of sensor information to determine how …
Immigration, Crime, And Policy, Tiara Grayson
Immigration, Crime, And Policy, Tiara Grayson
Theses
When viewing the criminal justice system, it is always investigated through a criminological approach. Meaning, there are numerous studies that attempt to get an understanding of why crime occurs, rather than the “why” in regards to the criminal justice system. The actors of the criminal justice system and their methods of crime control are rarely examined. In this paper, I will examine the behaviors of those who are attached to the criminal justice system; this includes the police, the media, politicians, and the public, who all play a role in how the criminal justice system functions, regarding immigration. Studying the …

An Approach Towards Achieving Urban Resilience In Threatened Urban Communities., Marwa Elsayed, Asmaa El Badrawy, Sherief Sheta
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The ongoing events and risks surrounding cities, whether natural, such as earthquakes, floods or unnatural ones (poverty, unemployment and lack of resources, etc.) have led to the need to examine and resilience of cities to resist such pressures and risks. This research presents the theoretical study of urban resilience and its characteristics and the concept of the resilient city in addition to studying the framework of the city's resilience and its goals and indicators. An analytical study is also undertaken in form of a comparative analysis of three city examples that face similar risks to that of Egypt. Finally, a …

An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
An Analysis Of Police Shootings In Dallas, Texas, 2003-2018, Steven Mccain
Theses and Dissertations
Legal establishments authorize police discretion of deadly force if they believe the threat to life or great bodily harm outweighs to threat presented by a criminal. Policing has been reactive when modern weapons of the times are used for criminal purposes. The adaptation process by police has made firearms necessary tools for conflict resolution. The Supreme Court also plays a role in determining what is reasonable use of deadly force, as these situations are rare with little precedent that require judicial review. Research on deadly force examines micro-level characteristics to better understand these situations. This study contributes to existing literature …
White Supremacy And The Racial Contract In The United States, Cayna Laurene Sharp
White Supremacy And The Racial Contract In The United States, Cayna Laurene Sharp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis project conducts an investigation into the evolution of the American polity through the lens of the racial contract. By relying on Charles Mills' The Racial Contract, I show through three episodes of American history, how the racial contract has been instituted and revised over time. The three periods of history I investigate are: the end of Reconsturction to the rise of Jim Crow in the nineteenth century, suburbanization in the mid-twentieth century, and the rise of mass incarceration as a means of replacing slavery since the end of the American Civil War. Through this analysis, I hope to …

Delay-Based Physical Unclonable Function Implementation, Abigail Aguirre, Michael Hall, Timothy Lim, Jonathan Trinh
Electrical and Computer Engineering Senior Theses
As we venture further into the 21st century, it becomes much clearer that hardware security is at the forefront of many challenges that we face today in ensuring that data is protected. “Keys” (a sequence of bits) can be used to unlock pieces of data and is a concept that is pervasive throughout cryptography, but storage in memory makes this sole method nonviable. To make the approach more practical, one can dynamically generate a key through a Physical Unclonable Function (PUF). PUFs are circuit primitives that use intrinsic variations of microchips created during the manufacturing process to generate a unique …

[2020 Honorable Mention] Six Days To Leave Home: The Diasporic Experience Of Japanese Americans To American Incarceration Camps, Evangeline Pabilona
Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award
Using diaspora as a rhetorical framework, this paper analyses the cultural connection between American incarceration camps and the imprisonment of Japanese American citizens during World War II. The forced removal of Japanese American families from their homes to concentration camps emphasizes the negative ramifications of diaspora regarding [forced] cultural assimilation, as well as a loss of culture, language, family, and bodily autonomy.

The Struggle To Share: Why National Governments In Europe Respond Differently To The Introduction Of Sharing Economy Platforms Into Traditional Service Sectors, Toni-Anne Barry
European Union Policy Studies Graduate Symposium
The rapid growth of sharing economy platforms such as Uber and Airbnb have garnered harsh criticism from national governments around the world. In the U.S. where these platforms originated, legal battles across the states are still on going, but robust public demand and support for these platforms ensure that lawmakers do not regulate them out of existence. In Europe, public engagement has yet to reach the point in which it will seriously affect the regulatory dispositions of lawmakers, as outlined in this paper. For this reason, it is apparent that European states are focusing more heavily on other factors outside …

Intelligent Acp Based Experimental Approach, Bin Chen, Xiaogang Qiu, Yiping Wang
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: As an approach to solve the problems in complex system research, ACP (Artificial Society, Computational Experiments, Parallel Execution) has played an important role in research fields such as public safety. With the development of information technologies such as big data, intelligent learning, game play theory, an intelligent ACP based experimental approach was proposed to solve the kernel problems in current complex system research. The possibility analysis of the approach in public safety, biological threats and joint combat experiments was illustrated. The applications including evacuation, network opinion and chemical industrial park security of the approach in safety science …

The Economic Burdens Of Life: Trade Secrecy And The Insulin Pricing Crisis In The United States, Emily Hanson
The Economic Burdens Of Life: Trade Secrecy And The Insulin Pricing Crisis In The United States, Emily Hanson

Approximately one in every ten Americans lives with diabetes, a condition that inhibits the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar. The majority of those with diabetes rely on insulin injections to control the condition and avoid the dire health consequences that can quickly result from insufficient insulin. The price of insulin has risen 700% in the past two decades, with burdensome if not disastrous consequences for individual patients and for public health more generally. Federal law provides a pathway for manufacturers of follow-on pharmaceuticals, including insulin, to obtain abbreviated approval from the FDA without repeating costly clinical trials by showing …

Consider The Source: The Media’S Coverage Of Female Fbi Agents In The 1970s, Kali Devarennes
The Forum: Journal of History
This paper explores the representation of female FBI agents in newspapers throughout the 1970s until the early 1990s. While this subject is not widely discussed, due to lack of exposure and research, this paper reveals how crucial these women were during this period as they redefined how society and male FBI agents viewed women in previously male-dominated fields. In 1970, the media responded to these women with a variety of assumptions and stereotypes defining women as sex objects, physically weak, and mentally unable to handle the dangerous work environment. Through examination of scholarly and primary sources, this paper uncovers the …

© 2020 American Psychological Association. Telepsychotherapy (also referred to as telehealth or telemental health), the use of videoconferencing to deliver psychotherapy services, offers an innovative way to address significant gaps in access to care and is being used to deliver a variety of treatments for youth. Although recent research has supported the effectiveness of telehealth delivery of a variety of interventions for children, the literature has focused very little on childhood posttraumatic stress disorder. This pilot study examined the feasibility and potential effectiveness of trauma-focused cognitive- behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) delivered via telepsychotherapy in community-based locations of either schools or patient …

Changes In The Exposure Of California’S Levee-Protected Critical Infrastructure To Flooding Hazard In A Warming Climate, Iman Mallakpour, Mojtaba Sadegh, Amir Aghakouchak
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Levee systems are an important part of California's water infrastructure, engineered to provide resilience against flooding and reduce flood losses. The growth in California is partly associated with costly infrastructure developments that led to population expansion in the levee protected areas. Therefore, potential changes in the flood hazard could have significant socioeconomic consequences over levee protected areas, especially in the face of a changing climate. In this study, we examine the possible impacts of a warming climate on flood hazard over levee protected land in California. We use gridded maximum daily runoff from global circulation models (GCMs) that represent a …
