The Covid-19 Pandemic And Religious Travel: Present And Future Trends, Daniel H. Olsen, Dallen Timothy
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has had dramatic effects on both the health and economic stability of countries around the world. While several scholars and media commentators have suggested that the pandemic would be a good time to reset an unsustainable tourism system, left out of these discussions has been the impacts on religion and religious travel. The purpose of this paper is to review the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on religion and religious travel, including the tensions that have arisen between religious communities, governments and health officials. The paper then discusses potential futures regarding religious travel in a …

Covid-19 Pandemic: Risks Facing Hajj And Umrah, Razaq Raj, Dino Bozonelos
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
The two major gatherings of Muslims which take place in Makkah and Madinah, the two holiest cities of Saudi Arabia, are umrah during Ramadan the 9th month and Hajj Dhul-Hajjah in the 12th month of the Islamic year. The COVID-19 outbreak has had a massive economic and social impact on pilgrimages for Muslims - because these gatherings could lead to widespread exposures and possible spread of COVID-19 to every corner of the world, it forced the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to cancel Umrah in March 2020. The pandemic has also prompted the Saudi government to limit Hajj, with some exceptions, …

In recent years, political and social concerns have risen in China related to green energy utilization and sustainable architecture. Architectural development in China has increased dramatically since the 2000s, and there is an increasing demand for and focus on energy-saving and sustainable architecture. However, there are few commercial complexes in China that apply sustainability standards. This research explores the future development of sustainable commercial complexes as the next step of architectural development in China, green technology evolution, and appropriate solutions for local conditions to provide a suitable sustainable commercial complex in Shanghai, China. The documentary analysis will be performed based …
Fear And Othering In Delhi: Assessing Non-Belonging Of Kashmiri Muslims, Charlotte Thomas
Fear And Othering In Delhi: Assessing Non-Belonging Of Kashmiri Muslims, Charlotte Thomas
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This contribution aims at assessing to what extent does the fact of living in New Delhi influence the Kashmiri Muslims’ sense of a national belonging to India. Non-belongingness is appraised through the study of Kashmiri Muslims’ emotions and perceptions towards New Delhi, that is to say the territory and the inhabitants of the capital city of India. Living in New Delhi nurtures an othering process between Kashmiri Muslims and the non-Kashmiri Muslim Delhiite society. The contribution analyses this process as a two-way dynamic wherein both the groups are at stake. In the same vein, non-belongingness also appears to be an …

Warriors, Guardians Or Both: A Grounded Theory Approach Of Exploring The Development Of Patrol Officers In Urban Community Relations, Kyle Znamenak
ETD Archive
The culture of policing is rooted in a warrior ethos of preserving order against chaos and criminality in a hostile world. This ethos may be negatively influencing community relations. A guardian mindset encourages community engagement, fostering trust, and building allies within the community. The purpose of this grounded theory study is to understand in the context of strained relationships between Communities of Color and police, how officers develop their knowledge, skills, and experiences to become guardians in the communities they serve. This research considers: 1) what is the process of developing patrol officers that are competent in community relations within …

University Ethics: The Status Of The Field, Matthew J. Gaudet
General Engineering
This paper’s task is to provide a summary of this nascent field at its current state of development. First, I trace Keenan’s work to germinate university ethics as a new field worthy of study. Second, I examine several precursors to university ethics and how these precursors continue to provide fertile soil for the field from which this new field may continue to grow. Next, I survey the current state of the field, identifying where the field has already begun to bloom and bear fruit. Finally, I look to the future of the field, identifying issues that are either already plaguing …

Formulating A Crowd State Prediction Problem For Application To Crowd Control, Brooks A. Butler
Formulating A Crowd State Prediction Problem For Application To Crowd Control, Brooks A. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
This project considers a new application of crowd control, namely, keeping the public safe during large scale demonstrations. This problem is difficult for a variety of reasons, including limited access to informative sensing and effective actuation mechanisms, as well as limited understanding of crowd psychology and dynamics. This project takes a first step towards solving this problem by formulating a crowd state prediction problem in consideration of recent work involving crowd behavior identification, crowd movement modeling, and crowd psychology modeling. We build a non-linear crowd behavior model incorporating components of personality modeling, human emotion modeling, group opinion dynamics, and group …

Junk Evidence: A Call To Scrutinize Historical Cell Site Location Evidence, Victoria Saxe
Junk Evidence: A Call To Scrutinize Historical Cell Site Location Evidence, Victoria Saxe
The University of New Hampshire Law Review
Historical cell site location information (CSLI) has been offered as objective, scientific location evidence in criminal trials, but is far less precise than the claims it is used to support. Not only is there no way to pinpoint a cellphone’s precise geographic location from historical CSLI, but there are also no known validation or error rates for the methodologies used to collect and analyze this data. A 2019 telecommunications scandal in Denmark revealed gross inadequacies in the cellphone data and software used by law enforcement to analyze this type of evidence. The scandal sent shockwaves through the country’s legal community …

The American Law Of Overruling Necessity: The Exceptional Origins Of State Police Power, William J. Novak
Book Chapters
One of the most significant legal-constitutional moments in the history of the American republic occurred in the Confederation Congress on September 26 and 27, 1787. On those dates, the handiwork of the historic Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia was now "laid before the United States in Congress assembled." And the momentous question for the extant official lawmaking body of the US government was what to do next. Under Article 1 3 of the Articles of Confederation, any alteration of the articles had to be agreed to by Congress and confirmed by the legislatures of every state. Notably, the Philadelphia convention had …

English Department: Research for Change - Wicked Problems in Our World
This paper is a research paper designed to explain how Covid-19 is a wicked problem. I talk about the symptoms that Covid-19 can cause and how this disease does not affect everyone the same way. I talk about the death count from Covid-19 and the statistics behind it. I then talk about how the news has not informed the people correctly on how to prevent the spread of the virus and how it is being handled, because all major news networks are fueled by political views. I talk about the bipartisan views our country has and why it is so …

Incentivization In Mobile Edge Computing Using A Full Bayesian Approach, Sean Lebien
Incentivization In Mobile Edge Computing Using A Full Bayesian Approach, Sean Lebien
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
The advances of multi-access edge computing (MEC) have paved the way for the integration of the MEC servers, as intelligent entities into the Internet of Things (IoT) environment as well as into the 5G radio access networks. In this thesis, a novel artificial intelligence-based MEC servers’ activation mechanism is proposed, by adopting the principles of Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Bayesian Reasoning. The considered problem enables the MEC servers’ activation decision-making, aiming at enhancing the reputation of the overall MEC system, as well as considering the total computing costs to serve efficiently the users’ computing demands, guaranteeing at the same time …
