The Qualitative Report
This study uses letters-to-self and a group interview to integrate the experiences of two groups of participant-researchers—(1) a professor of qualitative inquiry and two of his doctoral students in an online qualitative research class and (2) this same professor and his family. The specific purpose of this study for the first group, comprised of the professor and his two former doctoral students, was to jointly explore perceptions of teaching and learning qualitative inquiry in a formal university setting as well as these students’ perceptions of the impacts that their entry into full-time doctoral study has had on their family life. …

All work facilities and organizations need to implement mental health resources for their employees. Millions across the country, especially first responders, suffer in silence everyday as they work to tend to the needs of others. There are many individuals who feel as if they can’t address the anxiety, stress, or depressive states they may be in due to what is expected of them in the workplace. Rather than addressing their own mental health needs, they bottle up their emotions, never receiving the proper treatment or guidance to get them through difficult times. As individuals continue to put their mental health …

America is regarded as a guide for many aspects of society. One major area that we, as a country, have failed at is our prison system. Not only does America bear the title of having the highest incarceration rate in the world, but we also have a recidivism rate that demonstrates the ineffectiveness of our system. Recidivism refers to the reincarceration of a criminal. Our current ideology surrounding the purpose of prison is to punish someone for an act they have committed against society and themselves. Other countries have a vastly different philosophy regarding the purpose of prison, more commonly …

Going The Distance: A Case Study Of One Community College's Journey Across The Digital Divide, Michael Robert Jolley
Going The Distance: A Case Study Of One Community College's Journey Across The Digital Divide, Michael Robert Jolley
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Rural communities throughout the nation continue to lag their urban and suburban peers in access to high-speed internet service. This digital divide affects rural populations in a myriad of ways, but access to higher educational opportunities may be most problematic. While the promise of technology to level the field for rural students continues to offer hope, the scarcity of broadband service lingers. This qualitative instrumental case study explores how one exceptional rural community college in the Great Plains developed the capacity to deliver distance education programming. The study relies upon Rogers's theory of diffusion of innovations to validate the extent …

Closing The 911 Funding Gap: Increasing Revenues For 911 Emergency Dispatch Centers, Randy Ross
Closing The 911 Funding Gap: Increasing Revenues For 911 Emergency Dispatch Centers, Randy Ross
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
Since their introduction, 911 services have grown both in geographic scope and in the level of service provided. The revenue used to fund 911 services consists almost entirely of fees and surcharges on wireline, wireless, and Voice-over-Internet-Protocol telephone lines. These fees and surcharges generate billions of dollars each year, but 911 service revenues still fall short of estimated annual costs. Expenditures for personnel and for technology maintenance and upgrades have also increased over time. American consumers’ use of telephone lines has shifted from primarily wireline telephone lines to primarily wireless and Internet-based telephone lines with smaller fees and surcharges, contributing …
Public Improvement Districts: A Worthwhile Investment?, John Whitsell
Public Improvement Districts: A Worthwhile Investment?, John Whitsell
Certified Public Manager® Applied Research
Public Improvement Districts (PIDs) are a financing mechanism used to fund new developments and infrastructure improvements. PIDs are relatively easy to create and can be done by the local municipality. A majority of property owners within the district may petition a local government to create the district. Bonds can then be issued to fund a development or infrastructure improvements. Through an industry analysis and view of the current political environment, PIDs are certainly a beneficial mechanism to fund projects otherwise not feasible due to constraints on city budgets. Local elected officials will want PIDs monitored and only used in proper …

Clinical Decision Science Emphasizes Unique Social Context In A Way That Evidence-Based Medicine Does Not, Karen Weaver Md, Michelle Diebold Md, Zeinab Rizk Md, Ghada Mustapha Md, Wafa Algahmi Md, Aaron Rivkin Md, Nicholus Yee Md, James Peter Meza
Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates
INTRODUCTION: The ideal of evidence-based medicine includes the integration of clinical experience and patient values with research evidence. We introduce clinical decision science, a new framework that includes patient social context to demonstrate this integration, which has been absent from evidence-based medicine sources. METHODS: This is an observational study comparing published articles within the domains of clinical decision science and evidence-based medicine. In a standardized manner, investigators identified and counted instances of social interaction within the publications. RESULTS: Publications of Clinical Decision Science had a higher number of markers of social interaction per paper and greater proportion of papers that …
The Role Of The Prison-Industrial Complex In Demilitarization, Corporate Outsourcing, & Immigration Policy, Shellie Shimmel
The Role Of The Prison-Industrial Complex In Demilitarization, Corporate Outsourcing, & Immigration Policy, Shellie Shimmel
History in the Making
The traditional system of justice in the United States, based on the goals of retribution, incapacitation, rehabilitation, deterrence, and restitution, has been replaced with a corporate model of mass punishment based on profits, expediency, and the exploitation of free labor. This corporation is known as the “Prison-Industrial Complex” (“PIC”), and is made up of an enormous, interweaving system of correctional institutions, profit-driven corporations, and politicians. Some question whether the builders of the Prison-Industrial Complex could have predicted the outcome of their actions, but in fact their actions were orchestrated to produce certain results. Corporate executives and politicians are well educated …

Girls And The Juvenile Justice System: Community Stakeholders Recognize Gender Non-Conforming Behavior As “Criminal” For Girls, April Terry
2020 SACAD Entrants
Behaviors that guide girls into the correctional environment often pose little or no threat to public safety (e.g., running away). Deeply rooted gender injustice continues to remain persistent and drives girls deeper into the system. Despite continued discussion on improvement of societal gender norms, girls’ deviant behavior is often considered different from boys. In rural communities, girls’ deviance may be viewed as a threat to societal norms of femininity or a product of poor choices. For girls, these non-violent behaviors pave a way into the system and potentially a life behind bars. The current study serves as a contemporary comparison …

I will be researching current school safety policies that have been implemented following the school shooting in Parkland Florida and the Santa Fe tragedy. I will focus on three states' policies: New York, Florida, and Texas. I chose New York to research what is currently being done in our state in regards to school safety. I chose Florida because of the large impact Parkland had on the United States in making school safety a priority. I chose Texas because, as of this year 2020, they are the state with the largest number of school shootings. After researching these state policies …

Granite Staters Approve Of Sununu's Handling Of Coronavirus, Stay At Home Order 4/22/2020, Unh Survey Center
All UNH Survey Center Polls
Nine in ten Granite Staters approve of the job Governor Chris Sununu has done handling the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. A similarly large majority support Sununu's "stay at home" order for the state. Granite Staters say maintaining the stay at home order is more important than re-opening the NH economy by a two-to-one margin. Majorities of Granite Staters believe that state beaches, gyms, and churches should be closed during the stay at home order, while a plurality believe that state parks should stay open during the order.

Technology In Education: The Ongoing Debate Of Access, Adequacy And Equity, Kristiana Roth
Graduate Student Independent Studies
Technology is intertwined in all aspects of our lives. Technology has evolved in ways that were once considered unimaginable. Yet, access to these advancements in technology are not adequate, especially throughout our education system. The purpose of this paper is to bring to light the significance technology can have on our education system today. This paper will reflect research which supports the integration of technology beginning in early childhood classrooms. This paper will also reflect on the injustices that exist in how educational technology is unequally distributed between socio-economic status. More is available to wealthy, white students. While people from …

Science often does not make its way into decisions, leading to a problematic gap between scientific and societal progress. To tackle this issue, our research tests a novel science-based negotiation simulation that integrates a role-play simulation (RPS) with a system dynamics model (SDM). In RPSs, stakeholders engage in a mock decision-making process (reflecting real-life institutional arrangements and scientific knowledge) for a set period. System dynamics models (SDMs) are visual tools used to simulate the interactions and feedback within a complex system. We test the integration of the two approaches with stakeholders in New England via a series of two consecutive …

Building Ten Types Of New Infrastructure System For A Great Modern Power, Pan Jiaofeng, Wan Jinbo
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
From the perspective of human historical development process, this study analyzes the connotation evolution and system composition of infrastructure. Measured by the intergenerational leap in infrastructure, this study discusses the connotation and characteristics of new infrastructure in the era of knowledge and intelligent society. From the two dimensions of form and content, the study also puts forward that the new infrastructure system includes technology and digital infrastructure, infrastructure upgrading, infrastructure digitalization, national security, and governance infrastructure in the next 30 years. Based on the eight "economic and social foundation and strategic systems" and two basic systems of "scientific and technological …
Electric Scooters: A New Frontier In Transportation And Products Liability, Darden Copeland
Electric Scooters: A New Frontier In Transportation And Products Liability, Darden Copeland
Richmond Journal of Law & Technology
What lies at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and transportation? Electric scooters. In September of 2017, Birds flocked to their first city. In Santa Monica, California, hundreds of electric scooters suddenly appeared on sidewalks and street corners, ready to take a shot at more efficient transportation, while also ruffling a few feathers. Ridesharing applications such as Uber and Lyft are manifestations of the profound impact that technology has had on transportation in the recent past. This same technology has further influenced transportation through micro-mobility scooter-sharing systems. Companies, such as Bird and Lime, allow users to rent their electric scooters for …
