A Transcendental Phenomenological Study On Persistence In Online Mindfulness Programs, Sheila Seiler Jan 2020

A Transcendental Phenomenological Study On Persistence In Online Mindfulness Programs, Sheila Seiler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this research is to uncover the essence of the lived experiences of nontraditional learners who persist in online mindfulness programs. While there are quantitative studies and meta-analyses of what makes online mindfulness programs effective, there has not been an investigation and analysis of the experiences participants have in the programs that result in their persistence. Therefore, this transcendental phenomenological study examined the factors that encourage people to persevere and remain in online mindfulness programs. Ten nontraditional learners were recruited through convenience and snowball sampling, then purposeful sampling. Data were collected using a survey, open-ended interviews with participants, …

Truncated And Aggregated P Value Test, Lei Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

High throughput genome screening techniques are enabling researchers to interrogate human genome at single base pair level for their association with outcomes by genome wide association study (GWAS). However, it is usually challenging for GWAS to provide clear statistical conclusions at the gene level when multiple genomic features, either from same platform or different platforms, reside in the same gene. Traditionally a gene is considered as associated with an outcome when at least one genome feature within that gene is significantly associated with the outcome after adjusting for multiple genome-wide tests. Under that framework, only the most significant genome feature …

How Social Norms Moderate The Association Between Gender Role Conflict And Grief Cognitions, Whitney Shuman Jan 2020

How Social Norms Moderate The Association Between Gender Role Conflict And Grief Cognitions, Whitney Shuman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

College students experience a myriad of both death-related and non-death losses throughout their academic careers, which may impact their academic and psychological well-being. Male gender role conflict (GRC) related to restrictive emotionality and restrictive affectionate behavior between men is associated with multiple negative psychological outcomes and may be associated with difficulties related to the grieving process, as grief is typically closely linked with affective experiences related to the loss. The current study specifically examined maladaptive grief cognitions, which are beliefs about ones grief experiences that lead to increased psychological distress and decreased adjustment to the loss. Additionally, descriptive and injunctive …

Multiple Job Holders: The Impact Of Employment Structure On Health, Access To Care, And The Effect Of Policy Intervention, Courtney Jenkins Sievers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Access to healthcare services is impactful to health, and barriers to access can lead to disparities in health outcomes for different populations. Barriers to care can be financial and nonfinancial, and some populations may be more at risk for encountering barriers than others. As the American workforce is dynamic and heterogenous, understanding the different subgroups aids in understanding how to address their healthcare needs. This research aims to understand the impact employment structure, specifically the multiplicity of jobs, has on health and access to healthcare services. In addition, it aims to understand the effect of previous policy intervention on Multiple …

How Propaganda Became Public Relations: Foucault And The Corporate Government Of The Public, Cory Wimberly Jan 2020

How Propaganda Became Public Relations: Foucault And The Corporate Government Of The Public, Cory Wimberly

Philosophy Faculty Publications

How Propaganda Became Public Relations pulls back the curtain on propaganda: how it was born, how it works, and how it has masked the bulk of its operations by rebranding itself as public relations. Cory Wimberly uses archival materials and wide variety of sources — Foucault’s work on governmentality, political economy, liberalism, mass psychology, and history — to mount a genealogical challenge to two commonplaces about propaganda. First, modern propaganda did not originate in the state and was never primarily located in the state; instead, it began and flourished as a for-profit service for businesses. Further, propaganda is not focused …

Entrepreneuring After 50: The Liminal Identity Transitions Of Older Emergent Entrepreneurs, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo, Paul Donnelly

Articles

Entrepreneurship has been proposed as a solution to extending working lives. However, little is known about how older (50+) entrepreneurs manage their personal transitions into entrepreneurship. In this paper, we propose to use a liminal identity work perspective to explore the identity paradoxes that older entrepreneurs experience during their transition into entrepreneurship and how they manage it. We use a qualitative study conducted over 14 months in the United Kingdom. Our analysis shows how older entrepreneurs confront identity paradoxes, interruptions and identity polarization in their attempts to shift from older identities and activity patterns into new ones. The entrepreneurs who …

Uses And Gratifications Of Generation Z Within Social Networks: A Dialectical Investigation Into The Facebook Domain, Ryan O'Carroll, Tara Rooney

Articles

To date, little research has considered how various types of gratifications operate within SNSs such as Facebook (LaRose et al. 2001; Quan-Haase and Young, 2010; Wang, 2015). To address this gap, we explore Generation Z’s motivational behaviour through the lens of Uses and Gratifications Theory. Additionally, we investigate the types of gratification obtained by Generation Z through Facebook. The research adopted an interpretivist philosophy and employed a qualitative approach. The data collection method used semi-structured interviews, in conjunction with qualitative digital diary research. Research participants were requested to record emotions, behaviours and opinions in their digital diaries over a consecutive …

"This Is How We Play Destroy": Deconstruction And The Construction Of A Cyborg Future In Poppy's Am I A Girl?, Stevie Eve Sanchez

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Internet sensation and pop music star Poppy’s 2018 sophomore album Am I a Girl? stands out in an increasingly oversaturated pop landscape, thanks to evocative imagery, cleverly ambiguous lyrics, and daring genre crossovers that challenge conventions of contemporarypop music. Despite the album’s titular question, Poppy is not interested in being defined—instead, she seeks to transcend definition and exist in the space of questioning. On the album, Poppy explores concepts like gender, class, and consciousness in a way that pushes the boundaries of pop, deconstructing her genre, while also deconstructing the issues she sings about—and offering a vision for a future that …

"I Was A Trailblazer": A Phenomenological Study Of The Baseball Playing Experience Of Girls, Aj Richard Jan 2020

"I Was A Trailblazer": A Phenomenological Study Of The Baseball Playing Experience Of Girls, Aj Richard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Baseball is a reflection of America (Briley, 1992). The game is immersed in traditions. Many of these traditions are gendered. Baseball is built on myth, and these myths have served the purpose of keeping baseball white, heterosexual, and male. Baseball is also characteristic of enduring inequalities and discrimination. Sixty years after Jackie Robinson integrated Major League Baseball, owners, managers, coaches, CEOs, and fans are still overwhelmingly white and male (Chang, 2017; Lapchick, 2019). Although the participation of girls in baseball can be traced back to the beginnings of the game, they have faced persistent opposition. According to Batts Maddox (2019), …

International Law And Theories Of Global Justice, Steven Ratner, David Luban, Carmen Pavel, Jiewuh Song, James Stewart Jan 2020

International Law And Theories Of Global Justice, Steven Ratner, David Luban, Carmen Pavel, Jiewuh Song, James Stewart

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

International law informs, and is informed by, concerns for global justice. Yet the two fields that engage most with prescribing the normative structure of the world order – international law and the philosophy of global justice – have tended to work on parallel tracks. Many international lawyers, with their commitment to formal sources, regard considerations of substantive (and not merely procedural) justice as ultra vires for much of their work. Philosophers of global justice, in turn, tend to explore the moral commitments of international actors without grappling with the international legal doctrine or institutions. In recent years, however, both disciplines …

A Thirty State Analysis Of Teacher Supervision And Evaluation Systems In The Essa Era, Ian M. Mette, Israel Aguilar, Doug Wieczorek

Organization and School Leadership Faculty Publications

We analyzed teacher supervision and evaluation policy systems in 30 states since the passage of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015 in the United States (US). This qualitative study of state ESSA policy documents and legislation examined how teacher supervision and evaluation systems (TSES) models have been developed under ESSA, specifically regarding how the construction of TSES models conflated formative feedback with summative evaluation. Despite evolving federal-level and state-level education accountability policies spurred by No Child Left Behind (NCLB) in 2001, we argue that TSES systems are influenced by state-level historical political culture (Elazar, 1994; Fowler, 2013), workplace …

Psychology: Faculty Publications

In response to growing interest in mindfulness as a support for educators, the current study sought to create and test a new multidimensional and multi-informant measure of teacher mindfulness in the classroom. To counter some of the limitations of context-general self-reports, we designed two theoretically based classroom-specific measures that capture the experience and expression of mindful teacher behavior from the perspective of teachers and students. Drawing on emerging consensus from experts on mindfulness in education, the measures incorporated three dimensions of mindfulness, namely, Calm, Clear, and Kind teacher behavior in the classroom, as well as their antitheses, namely, Reactive, …
