Perceptions of social support have been shown to have a protective effect (buffer against mental health symptoms particularly for survivors of more severe maltreatment) and a promotive effect (direct positive effect on mental health symptoms regardless of the severity of child maltreatment) with mental health concerns. Research has shown more consistent support for the promotive effect of social support on mental health outcomes in adults who have a history of childhood maltreatment. The protective effect of social …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There is a large and growing population of individuals within the United States Criminal Justice system suffering from both diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health issues. The stigma associated with their offender status and mental illness can prevent sufficient quality of mental health services from being provided to this population. Even individuals that work closely with offenders have been shown to exhibit negative perceptions of offenders with mental illness and little research exists in this area related to counselors. Further, the offender population is one that requires specialized training and consideration and it is unclear how much training or exposure counselors …

Evaluating The Need For A Gender Specific Risk Assessment For Female Intimate Partner Violence Offenders, Amanda Leigh Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

AbstractRisk assessments are considered to be best practice in many states for assisting in sentencing decisions, bail conditions, and probation/parole requirements for intimate partner violence (IPV) offenders. However, most risk assessment tools that are currently being used were created using research on risk factors for recidivism in male IPV offenders. This is problematic given the percentage of females arrested for IPV-related crimes has increased substantially over the past decade. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of a risk assessment tool developed for use specifically for female IPV offenders in predicting recidivism in comparison to a risk …

Truncated And Aggregated P Value Test, Lei Shi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

High throughput genome screening techniques are enabling researchers to interrogate human genome at single base pair level for their association with outcomes by genome wide association study (GWAS). However, it is usually challenging for GWAS to provide clear statistical conclusions at the gene level when multiple genomic features, either from same platform or different platforms, reside in the same gene. Traditionally a gene is considered as associated with an outcome when at least one genome feature within that gene is significantly associated with the outcome after adjusting for multiple genome-wide tests. Under that framework, only the most significant genome feature …

How Propaganda Became Public Relations: Foucault And The Corporate Government Of The Public, Cory Wimberly Jan 2020

How Propaganda Became Public Relations: Foucault And The Corporate Government Of The Public, Cory Wimberly

Philosophy Faculty Publications

How Propaganda Became Public Relations pulls back the curtain on propaganda: how it was born, how it works, and how it has masked the bulk of its operations by rebranding itself as public relations. Cory Wimberly uses archival materials and wide variety of sources — Foucault’s work on governmentality, political economy, liberalism, mass psychology, and history — to mount a genealogical challenge to two commonplaces about propaganda. First, modern propaganda did not originate in the state and was never primarily located in the state; instead, it began and flourished as a for-profit service for businesses. Further, propaganda is not focused …

Entrepreneuring After 50: The Liminal Identity Transitions Of Older Emergent Entrepreneurs, Lucia Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia Sell-Trujillo, Paul Donnelly

Articles

Entrepreneurship has been proposed as a solution to extending working lives. However, little is known about how older (50+) entrepreneurs manage their personal transitions into entrepreneurship. In this paper, we propose to use a liminal identity work perspective to explore the identity paradoxes that older entrepreneurs experience during their transition into entrepreneurship and how they manage it. We use a qualitative study conducted over 14 months in the United Kingdom. Our analysis shows how older entrepreneurs confront identity paradoxes, interruptions and identity polarization in their attempts to shift from older identities and activity patterns into new ones. The entrepreneurs who …

Uses And Gratifications Of Generation Z Within Social Networks: A Dialectical Investigation Into The Facebook Domain, Ryan O'Carroll, Tara Rooney

Articles

To date, little research has considered how various types of gratifications operate within SNSs such as Facebook (LaRose et al. 2001; Quan-Haase and Young, 2010; Wang, 2015). To address this gap, we explore Generation Z’s motivational behaviour through the lens of Uses and Gratifications Theory. Additionally, we investigate the types of gratification obtained by Generation Z through Facebook. The research adopted an interpretivist philosophy and employed a qualitative approach. The data collection method used semi-structured interviews, in conjunction with qualitative digital diary research. Research participants were requested to record emotions, behaviours and opinions in their digital diaries over a consecutive …
