Becoming a mother is a significant life event that can greatly impact maternal mental health. Understanding maternal mental health is an important interdisciplinary goal because it could lead to mother’s receiving better care and support from both mental health and medical professionals. Seven first-time mothers with a baby under the age of one were interviewed for a phenomenological qualitative study, which investigated first-time mothers’ postpartum mental health experiences. Dual Disadvantage: An Examination Of Racial Disparities In Victim And Suspect Criminal Justice Treatment, Paige Vaughn Nov 2020

Dual Disadvantage: An Examination Of Racial Disparities In Victim And Suspect Criminal Justice Treatment, Paige Vaughn

Dissertations

During the past several decades, American criminal justice legal systems appear to have been over-punishing Black individuals as perpetrators of crime, and neglecting them as violent crime victims, perpetuating disparities that simultaneously repress and alienate Black citizens. Such complex processes of racial inequality are difficult to capture in studies that focus on single criminal justice stages and limited sets of variables. After presenting a working conceptualization of case processing that can be used across criminal justice systems, the current study uses data from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Census to assess racial …

Multimodal Computational Modeling Of Visual Object Recognition Deficits But Intact Repetition Priming In Schizophrenia, Pejman Sehatpour, Anahita Bassir Nia, Devin Adair, Zhishun Wang, Heloise M. Debaun, Gail Silipo, Antigona Martinez, Daniel C. Javitt

Publications and Research

The term perceptual closure refers to the neural processes responsible for “filling-in” missing information in the visual image under highly adverse viewing conditions such as fog or camouflage. Here we used a closure task that required the participants to identify barely recognizable fragmented line-drawings of common objects. Patients with schizophrenia have been shown to perform poorly on this task. Following priming, controls and importantly patients can complete the line-drawings at greater levels of fragmentation behaviorally, suggesting an improvement in their ability to performthe task. Closure phenomena have been shown to involve a distributed network of cortical regions, notably the lateral …

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Is Associated With Effect Of Inflammation On Structural Changes Of Default Mode Network In Those Developing Chronic Pain, Xuan Niu, Lijun Bai, Yingxiang Sun, Yuan Wang, Guanghui Bai, Bo Yin, Shan Wang, Shuoqiu Gan, Xiaoyan Jia, Hongjuan Liu

Open Access Publications

BACKGROUND: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) has a higher prevalence (more than 50%) of developing chronic posttraumatic headache (CPTH) compared with moderate or severe TBI. However, the underlying neural mechanism for CPTH remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the inflammation level and cortical volume changes in patients with acute PTH (APTH) and further examine their potential in identifying patients who finally developed CPTH at follow-up.

METHODS: Seventy-seven mTBI patients initially underwent neuropsychological measurements, 9-plex panel of serum cytokines and MRI scans within 7 days post-injury (T-1) and 54 (70.1%) of patients completed the same protocol at a 3-month follow-up …

"Relentless": The Social Identity Of Chronic Illness And Disability, Mary Boujaoude

Honors Theses

Despite the steady growth of rights and acceptance of people from other minority groups, the significance of the issues faced by people with chronic illnesses and disabilities has not enjoyed the same public endorsement. This population has experienced disproportionate disadvantages that have prohibited them from realizing their full potential as active members of society. Much of the scholarship in the area of Disability Studies and research into the social issues faced by people with chronic illnesses and disability is academic in nature, while most advocacy work is non-academic in nature. Relentless is a book of essays that blends personal narrative …

Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will Nov 2020

Lettering Design: Using Handwritten And Illustrative Techniques To Improve Memorization, Kathryn Will

Senior Honors Theses

Graphic designers have many choices when designing and communicating with words which can be seen throughout history. Hand lettering techniques have been used for centuries to record information. Then with the development of moveable type came the mass production of reading materials and the introduction of typefaces. Today, much written communication is viewed through a digitized typeface on a screen. However, there has recently been a noticeable increase in hand lettered type, one of these reasons being that hand lettered type can be easier for people to remember. This paper and the visual application of the research examines how hand …

Phenomenological Study On Lived Experiences Of Assigned Expatriates, John Alan Hennings

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The academic community has researched expatriate work for over five decades, but the problems identified in the 1960s persist. This study focuses on the assigned expatriate, defined as an individual on overseas assignment for his or her employer. It uses qualitative semi-structured interviews and a phenomenological approach to answer questions research has largely ignored: What are the distinctive characteristics of life and work as an assigned expatriate? How do assigned expatriates perceive their expatriate experience? The scope includes selection, preparation, life and work abroad, and repatriation, investigating the experiences of expatriates on assignments for the U.S. military, civil government, and …

Flow- Digital Gestural Expression, Senjal Pandharpatte

Theses

Overwhelming emotions affect the performance, productivity, and mental well-being of an individual. This has been a rising trend in highly sensitive young adults. To maintain well-being one can work towards developing emotional intelligence. With a higher emotional intelligence (EQ) the capacity to be aware of, control and express one’s emotions is better [1]. We lack an engaging way to communicate self-expression that feels in sync with us. The main problem being addressed here is to help people recognize their own emotions, by themselves, and then effectively communicate them to other people. Flow is an interactive creative outlet that allows highly …

The expansion of Internet access offers new possibilities for human development through rapid access to information, knowledge, culture, entertainment, routine processes, and the possibility of establishing new forms of interaction with people who are many meters or thousands of kilometers away. Survey data on Internet use by children in Brazil reveals that, in 2018, 86% of Brazilian children 9 to 17 years old were Internet users (Brazilian Internet Steering Committee [CGI.br], 2019). As the Internet offers space with particular rules of interaction, it provides new ways to express behavior, contributing to human development.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Mucopolysaccharidosis type IIIB (MPS IIIB; Sanfilippo syndrome B) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by the deficiency of alpha-N-acetylglucosaminidase activity, leading to increased levels of nondegraded heparan sulfate (HS). A mouse model has been useful to evaluate novel treatments for MPS IIIB, but has limitations. In this study, we evaluated the naturally occurring canine model of MPS IIIB for the onset and progression of biochemical and neuropathological changes during the preclinical stages (onset approximately 24-30 months of age) of canine MPS IIIB disease. Even by 1 month of age, MPS IIIB dogs had elevated HS levels in brain …
