Hooked On A Feeling: Influence Of Brief Exposure To Familiar Music On Feelings Of Emotion In Individuals With Alzheimer's Disease, Alaine E. Reschke-Hernández, Amy M. Belfi, Edmarie Guzmán-Vélez, Daniel Tranel
Music Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Research has indicated that individuals with Alzheimer's-type dementia (AD) can experience prolonged emotions, even when they cannot recall the eliciting event. Less is known about whether music can modify the emotional state of individuals with AD and whether emotions evoked by music linger in the absence of a declarative memory for the eliciting event.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the effects of participant-selected recorded music on self-reported feelings of emotion in individuals with AD, and whether these feelings persisted irrespective of declarative memory for the emotion-inducing stimuli.
METHODS: Twenty participants with AD and 19 healthy comparisons (HCs) listened to two 4.5-minute …

"Complex problems characterized by uncertainty, interconnectedness, poorly defined goals, and high risk are not new to the human experience. Yet humanity is increasingly faced with multifaceted and pervasive global challenges, and leadership education must adapt accordingly. These complex problems transcend borders and require a collective, adaptive, and iterative learning response. Complex problems such as failure to act on climate change, unemployment, food crises, governance failures, pandemics, cyberattacks, and involuntary migration are interrelated challenges that require paradigm shifts in responses and leadership (Global Risk Report, 2020). PDXOpen: Open Educational Resources
This OER packet contains the course materials for PSY410: Paranormal Psychology. Although often dismissed as a pseudoscience, there are many things we can learn about human beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors by studying phenomena that our current science cannot explain. The course begins with a history of real scientific studies that have been conducted to try and determine whether things like extrasensory perception, telepathy, and telekinesis are real phenomena, with a particular emphasis on what those studies can teach us about the scientific method more generally. This is followed by an examination of things related to the afterlife (e.g., ghosts, mediums, …

Who Creates Family-Supportive Work Environments? Examining Characteristics Of Leaders Who Enact Family-Supportive Superviso Behaviors, Stefanie Mockler
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Over the past several decades, a plethora of research has focused on better understanding how individuals can succeed in the workplace while navigating the complex intersection between work, family, and personal life. Offering flexible working arrangements (FWA), such as flextime and flexplace, is promising for employees who seek to find greater balance. However, supervisor support for use of FWA is critical, as supervisors often have discretion over their enforcement and use, and thus, can create (or inhibit) the development of a family-supportive work environment. Further, preliminary research indicates that expression of family-supportive supervisor behaviors (FSSBs) lend to positive outcomes for …

Publications and Research
Background Lead is a common environmental hazard because of its past use as an additive to gasoline and household paint. Some evidence suggests that children with histories of child abuse and neglect are at elevated risk for residence in communities and households with less desirable characteristics and high levels of exposure to environmental hazards and toxins.
Objectives To understand whether childhood maltreatment leads to higher levels of household dust lead and blood lead in adulthood and the extent to which characteristics of a person’s physical environment or individual level socio-economic status (SES) (based on unemployment, poverty, and receipt of public …

As CORU commence regulation of social care education, educators are tasked with ensuring that graduates meet the threshold standards set by the Social Care Workers Registration Board (SCWRB) (2017a) in the Standards of Proficiency for Social Care Workers. This paper focuses on Domain 3 of these standards which outlines the proficiencies required to deliver a safe, effective and quality service, including proficiencies pertaining to assessment, intervention and evaluation. There is limited literature in Ireland in relation to how assessment, intervention and evaluation take place in diverse social care settings. As social care educators with qualifications and professional experience in social …
Proficiency Within Professionalisation: A Social Constructionist Critique Of Standards Of Proficiency For Social Care Workers In The Republic Of Ireland, Susan Flynn
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
Major change is underway in Irish social care. Toward the professionalisation of social care workers in the Republic of Ireland, standards of proficiency were drafted and published in 2017 by the Social Care Workers Registration Board. These standards represent the threshold of what a worker must demonstrate at the point of entry to the register and as such, critical inquiry into their nature and merit is both indispensable and required, be it through stakeholders in the field, or from social care academia. Theoretically informed appraisal of standards of proficiency in this paper occurs through a composite social constructionist frame. Therein, …
Social Care Work: The Shaping Of An Emerging Profession, John Mchugh
Social Care Work: The Shaping Of An Emerging Profession, John Mchugh
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This paper examines how the progression towards the professionalisation and regulation of the Social Care profession in Ireland is taking place in a global policy context. It suggests that the development and definition of social care work is influenced by wider policy factors established on a global stage but enacted at national and ultimately local level. The ‘kind of’ profession that is established may not only be shaped by evidence-informed practice, Standards of Proficiency (SCWRB, 2017) or a deepening understanding of the needs of vulnerable adult and child service-users, but also by a national interpretation of a neo-liberal global ideological …

Learning To Put Everyday Creativity, Semiotics And Critical Visual Literacy Using Inquiry Graphics (Ig) Visual Analysis To Work In Social Care, Denise Mac Giolla Rí
Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies
This article argues that despite CORU’s recognition of Creative Arts as integral to Social Care Practice, there are ‘pedagogical, theoretical and practice gaps’, which might be addressed through a ‘process orientated novel creative pedagogy’ (PONCP) introduced in this paper. The PONCP is built on two tenets, firstly that creative expression is not just for professional artists – everyone is capable of creative expression, though cultural messages make us believe otherwise, and secondly engaging in creative practice is therapeutic in varying degrees from passing time productively to psychoanalytic engagement. A curriculum is proposed comprising: edusemiotics (the interpretation and creation of meaning), …

Autobiographical Memory And Future Imaginings As A Resource For Pedagogical Understanding In Initial Teacher Education, Carmel Hinchion Miss
The Qualitative Report
The focus of this article is twofold: (a) It explores how autobiographical memory and future imaginings can be used as a resource for pedagogical understanding in Initial Teacher Education, and (b) The paper engages a methodological experiment where there is a layered reading of texts across time, 2008-2018.The paper presents, through a narrative analysis of autobiographical texts, the stories of two student teachers, Ciara and John (Text 1, 2008). These student teachers were in the early years of their undergraduate four-year programme in my university and I was their English Pedagogics lecturer. Later, I revisit these student teachers’ narratives and …

Advancing Functional Scientific Literacy To Socioscientific Literacy As A Cross Disciplinary Educational Goal: A Philosophical Analysis, Kory Bennett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Educational experiences built upon the Socioscientific Issues (SSI) framework provide opportunities for teachers and students to reflectively and reflexively address ill-defined complex scientific issues that affect human beings around the planet. Through the practice of Socioscientific Reasoning (SSR), while grappling with SSI, students have the potential to develop a SSI functional perspective of scientific literacy (SL); functional scientific literacy (FSL). Due to the multidimensional complexity of many human issues in and out of the science classroom, students are required to develop various skills, dispositions, and problem-solving strategies that expand from and connect with a SSI functional perspective of SL. The …

Hope Home For Children: How Architecture Can Heal People Emotionally, Fatemeh Sahamirad
Hope Home For Children: How Architecture Can Heal People Emotionally, Fatemeh Sahamirad
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This thesis investigates how architecture can heal people by creating spaces that consider emotional needs. This exploration is developed through the design of a group home for children without parental support in Memphis, Tennessee. This thesis suggests that the solution to the problem of a place for children is not just providing shelter. Rather, the challenge is to create spaces that respond to their psychosocial needs in different stages of life. This design engages human psychology and particular human interaction in the community (in large and small groups) as well as providing spaces for individual expression.

Race And Ethnic Variation In College Students’ Allostatic Regulation Of Racism-Related Stress, Jacob E. Cheadle, Bridget J. Goosby, Joseph C. Jochman, Cara Tomaso, Chelsea B. Kozikowski Yancey, Timothy D. Nelson
Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications
Racism-related stress is thought to contribute to widespread race/ ethnic health inequities via negative emotion and allostatic stress process up-regulation. Although prior studies document racerelated stress and health correlations, due to methodological and technical limitations, they have been unable to directly test the stress-reactivity hypothesis in situ. Guided by theories of constructed emotion and allostasis, we developed a protocol using wearable sensors and daily surveys that allowed us to operationalize and time-couple self-reported racism-related experiences, negative emotions, and an independent biosignal of emotional arousal. We used data from 100 diverse young adults at a predominantly White college campus to assess …

Social Construction Of Suicide In The Philippines Based On The Perspectives Of Undergraduate Students From Two Universities In Metro Manila, Mark Anthony M. Quintos
Social Sciences and Development Review
A total of 308 undergraduate students from a sectarian, predominantly middle and upper-middle socio-economic class university (n=139) and a stateowned, non-sectarian, predominantly lower socio-economic class university (n=169) were engaged in a survey research that attempted to understand their perceptions on suicide as a phenomenon. Results indicate that the students from the two universities are very similar in their social constructions of the reality of suicide among the Filipino youth: they believe that suicide is primarily due to depression and other mental illnesses, that majority of young Filipinos have thought of suicide at least once, and that almost 1 out of …

I, Too, Sing Neurodiversity, Morénike Giwa Onaiwu
I, Too, Sing Neurodiversity, Morénike Giwa Onaiwu
Ought: The Journal of Autistic Culture
The neurodiversity community was envisioned as an inclusive and welcoming space for individuals with neurological conditions such as ADHD, autism, Tourette’s Syndrome, giftedness, dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, intellectual disability, NVLD and related diagnoses. The underlying premise of neurodiversity is that people present with various neurological differences and there is value in acknowledging and accepting these differences. Despite efforts made over the past few decades, a growing number of individuals within the neurodiversity community, including people of color, have called for intersectional concepts to be more intentionally and more effectively interwoven into neurodiversity as a whole. Referencing “I, Too,” a decades-old poem …
