Open Communities And Formal Organizations: A Symbiosis View, Tanner Skousen, Hani Safadi, Richard Watson

Faculty Publications

How can formal organizations and open communities engage in mutually beneficial relationships? We develop a framework that explains how an open community’s engagement with a formal organization can be mutually beneficial to both in the long-term. We theorize how a symbiotic relationship between open communities and formal organizations can be forged by nurturing various forms of capital flow between them as well as creating virtuous feedback loops within and across each other’s capital creation systems. The framework has implications for understanding innovation in ecosystems and networked economies.

Faculty Perspectives: Understanding And Responding To Stress Management Needs In The Occupational Therapy Doctorate, Alyson Rae Wilhelmi Downs

Theses and Dissertations

Occupational therapy programs are currently pursuing the transition to an entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD). Due to the novel change with this population, minimal research exists on how faculty are understanding and constructing a process to manage stress, promote wellbeing, and foster self-efficacy for themselves and the benefit of students during this time of transition. The concepts of habituation and social cognitive theory frame inquiry and understanding of the research problem for the development of a constructivist grounded theory study. A total of nine faculty and staff members at a Midwest OT program in the midst of programmatic change to …

During the early years of the American Association of State Colleges & Universities’ (AASCU) American Democracy Project (ADP), a handful of civic-minded leaders in higher education began to grapple with what it meant to teach students to be engaged citizens. The project began with seven initiatives focusing on efforts such as voting, stewardship of land, political engagement, and citizenship to build a foundation for increasing civic literacy, democratic agency, and community engagement among college students (American Association of State Colleges and Universities, 2019). Membership and participation in ADP grew quickly and it seemed an organic revolution of sorts was building …

The Fault In Our Stars: Challenging The Fcc's Treatment Of Commercial Satellites As Categorically Excluded From Review Under The National Environmental Policy Act, Ramon J. Ryan

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Mega satellite constellations, such as SpaceX's Starlink, have the ability to connect humans across the globe in a way never before possible. However, the unprecedented deployment of tens of thousands of satellites into orbit around Earth creates the risk of altering the night sky for astronomers and the public for decades to come, as well as the risk of polluting the environment through the use of toxic satellite components. The Federal Communications Commission considers commercial-satellite projects categorically excluded from environmental review despite the National Environmental Policy Act's requirement that federal agencies review projects for their environmental effects. A court would …
