Compliance As An Exchange Of Legitimacy For Influence, In The Oxford Handbook Of Global Legal Pluralism (Paul Schiff Berman Ed., 2020), Kishanthi Parella Jan 2020

Compliance As An Exchange Of Legitimacy For Influence, In The Oxford Handbook Of Global Legal Pluralism (Paul Schiff Berman Ed., 2020), Kishanthi Parella

Books and Chapters

This chapter explains that business actors comply with legally nonbinding institutions because of an exchange between legitimacy and influence. Specifically, the information effects produced by both binding and nonbinding institutions can cause reputational damage to a company. To regain its legitimacy, that company associates itself with a more reputable organization than itself, regaining legitimacy through that association. However, that association often comes at a price. In exchange for conferring legitimacy, the external organization will promote its own institutions for the company’s adoption. Companies therefore adopt these institutions in order to credibly signal the quality of their association with the external …

An Organizational Readiness Assessment And Patient Survey For Adoption Of An Opioid De-Escalation Protocol In Curative Oncology Patients, Adria Myers

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Since 2012, statistics illustrate an explosion in the number of Americans admittedly misusing prescription opioids which increase the risk of long-term adverse effects. By 2016, individuals admitting to taking opioids for non medical reasons exceeded eleven million and 1.9 million of these individuals met the mental health guidelines for opioid abuse. Oncology patients represent a target population with an unmet met need for opioid reduction. Goals for de-escalation or tapering opioids for non-cancer pain have gained increasing attention across healthcare. Evidence-based opioid de-escalation guidelines specific for curative oncology patients are lacking in the literature. The aim of this DNP project …

The Relationship Among Generational Cohorts, Tenure, Job Categories, And Employee Readiness For Organizational Change In A Healthcare Environment: A Quantitative Study, Jerry S. K. Adatsi

Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)

Internal and external factors constantly influence and pressure healthcare organizations to adapt, change, or respond to changes in the modern global business environment. When facing the challenge of change initiatives, healthcare organizations depend on the flexibility of employees to successfully navigate the change process as there is the expectation that their employees will be ready for a change. Extant literature, however, suggests that more than 70% of change initiatives undertaken by businesses fail, and the high cost of failure is due to the resistance of employees to change and their lack of change readiness. With continued interest by healthcare organizations …

The Constitutionality Of Nationwide Injunctions, Alan M. Trammell Jan 2020

The Constitutionality Of Nationwide Injunctions, Alan M. Trammell

Scholarly Articles

Opponents of nationwide injunctions have advanced cogent reasons why courts should be skeptical of this sweeping remedy, but one of the arguments is a red herring: the constitutional objection. This Essay focuses on the narrow question of whether the Article III judicial power prohibits nationwide injunctions. It doesn’t.

This Essay confronts and dispels the two most plausible arguments that nationwide injunctions run afoul of Article III. First, it shows that standing jurisprudence does not actually speak to the scope-of-remedy questions that nationwide injunctions present. Second, it demonstrates that the Article III judicial power is not narrowly defined in terms of …

(Un)Sustainability And Organization Studies: Towards A Radical Engagement, Seray Ergene, Bobby S. Banerjee, Andrew J. Hoffman

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this essay, we trace the evolution of the field of sustainability in management and organization studies and narrate its epistemological twists and turns. Concerned by the current trajectory that tends to diminish a focus on political concerns, we propose a new research agenda, ecological case for business, that transforms our paradigmatic orientation in four shifts: 1) altering our epistemological lenses from managerial to critical perspectives, 2) altering our ontological lenses from realist to relational view, 3) changing the way we design and conduct research from discipline-focused to interdisciplinary knowledge, and 4) transforming our scholarly stance from value-neutral to engaged …

An Exploratory Study On The Managerial Competencies Of First-Line Managers In A Philippine University, Alyssa Kaye S. Mojar, Dinah Pura T. Depositario

Journal of Economics, Management and Agricultural Development

Faculty and researchers, mostly well-trained, usually fill managerial positions at universities. Still, they do not have formal management training. This qualitative study examined the managerial competencies of 11 university firstline managers. Using Kurz and Bartram’s Great Eight Competency Theory (2002) for the thematic analysis of the interview transcripts, most of the respondents exhibited all eight competencies. However, they differed in terms of manifestations. A typology of academic administrators was developed based on the eight competencies, namely: (1) delegator, (2) accommodator, (3) director, and (4) initiator. Further quantitative research is recommended to refine this typology. Likewise, to develop current and potential …

Dancers are susceptible to overtraining caused by work demands, leading to both mental and physiological burn out. The purpose of this research is to formulate an overtraining prevention plan for dancers through the use of periodization models and work-life balance programs. The work-life balance benefits within similarly demanding organizations as well as work-life benefit exemplar organizations were analyzed and used to evaluate how similar programming could be implemented for professional dancers. Respite, disability/illness, educational/career transition, disaster/emergency relief, parental, and counseling/healthcare policies and benefits were examined. The results of this comprehensive examination revealed several policies that could be implemented for dancers.

Reconsidering Hostile Takeover Of Religious Organizations, B. Jessie Hill Jan 2020

Reconsidering Hostile Takeover Of Religious Organizations, B. Jessie Hill

Faculty Publications

Beginning in 2016, the headlines of major publications began announcing that Donald Trump had successfully completed a “hostile takeover” of the Republican Party. Whether this appraisal is accurate or not, it reflects concern about the associational integrity of a voluntary private organization—the Republican Party—and it suggests that some forms of organizational transformation are problematic. Moreover, the same concern might arise regarding other private associations, including religious associations. Yet, given that some transformation is inevitable and universal within religious and other voluntary organizations, it would be unwarranted to assume that all change within a religious organization is necessarily problematic.

Leadership, Development, And Expertise: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Scholarly Communication Librarian Position Announcements, Angela Hackstadt

University Libraries Faculty Scholarship

In 2012, the Association of Research Libraries reported that 95% of libraries identified their libraries as leaders of scholarly communication efforts on campus. While academic librarians have long been responsible for SC issues, institutions have explicitly tasked positions with these responsibilities increasingly over time. This qualitative analysis of position announcements focuses on the ways libraries expect these librarians to engage with SC issues and responsibilities, rather than describing the prevalence of SC-related functions. Specifically, this study asks the following questions: (1) How do administrators communicate leadership expectations of SC librarian roles through job advertisements? (2) In what ways could these …

The Helper And Gatekeeper: Graduate Mental Health Educators And Trainees In Psychological Distress, Stephanie Elaine Garcia

ETD Archive

Graduate trainees from mental health disciplines have been found to exhibit higher levels of distress in comparison to the general population. Emotional distress is not a disqualifying factor in keeping trainees from the field. However, to provide ethical care, trainees must learn the skills necessary to manage their emotions while providing professional services. Currently, professional programs in psychology are shifting towards a competency-based education model for trainees, in which they are expected to meet progress on specific benchmarks based on their developmental stage. Trainees in distress who are unable to engage in appropriate behaviors in academic and professional settings are …
