The “Right” Recipes For Security Culture: A Competing Values Model Perspective, Hwee-Joo Kam, Thoma Mattson, Dan J. Kim
Management Faculty Publications
This study argues that the effect of perceived organizational culture on the formation of security-related subjective norms and the level of compliance pressure will vary based on how the employees perceive their organization’s cultural values. These perceptions reflect on the assumptions and principles that organizations use to guide their security-related behaviors. To make these arguments, we adopt the competing values model (CVM), which is a model used to understand the range of organizational values and resulting cultural archetypes.

Be Like Me: The Effects Of Manager-Supervisor Alignment, Johanna Anzengruber, Sabine Bergner, Herbert Nold, Daniel Bumblauskas
Faculty Work
Purpose: This study examines whether managerial capability fit between line-managers, middle-managers, and top-level managers enhances effectiveness.
Design/methodology/approach: Effectiveness data and managerial capability ratings from more than 1,600 manager-supervisor dyads were collected in the United States and Germany. Polynomial regression was used to study the relation between manager-supervisor fit and managerial effectiveness.
Findings: Our results indicate that the fit of managerial capabilities between a manager and his/her supervisor predicts the effectiveness of this manager. The most effective managers show particularly high managerial capabilities that are in line with predominantly high managerial capabilities of their supervisors. Two aspects are …

Dissertations
This research used a case study approach to chronicle the process of seeking the American Nurse Credentialing Center's Pathway to Excellence in Long-Term Care designation in one Midwest community. The PTE-LTC practice standards framework guided the implementation of professional nursing practice which focused on a positive practice environment, shared decision-making, accountability for resident care, and the leadership development of nursing staff. These practice standards are outlined in the study and incorporated the major components necessary to implement Professional Nursing Practice and Shared Governance in long-term care. The components of the designation process over a five-year period were documented and compared …
Essential Oil Therapy For Alleviation Of Discomfort In Surgical Patients, Nenhuan Huang
Essential Oil Therapy For Alleviation Of Discomfort In Surgical Patients, Nenhuan Huang
DNP and Student Works
Post-surgical pain (PSP) has not been sufficiently managed despite routine opioid use. The adverse effects of opioids led to the search for non-pharmaceutical intervention. The PICOT question that guided this project was, "In an acute hospital surgical setting, does essential oil therapy complement pain and discomfort relief comparing to conventional pain management alone after 6 weeks?" Seven clinical studies, five systematic or integrative reviews, and four conference proceedings were reviewed. The evidence supported lavender essential oil for the alleviation of PSP and discomfort. Patients breathe through a personal lavender essential oil inhaler hourly or every 2 hours. The percentage means …

The Effect Of Medication Reconciliation Timeout On Patient Safety: An Evidence-Based Project, Renante Dizon
DNP and Student Works
There was a report of a high rate of medication errors from inaccurate medication reconciliation during admission to a local hospital in South Texas. The medication error rate was 14.88% on 20 reviewed charts, and 85% of all evaluated charts contained at least one medication discrepancy.
This evidence-based, system-change project was guided by the following PICOT question: For nurses administering medication in a long-term acute care hospital, does the implementation of Medication Reconciliation Timeout Process (MRTP) decrease the medication errors, compared to the usual medication practice, in one month?

Why We Fail To Enact The Change We Need: A Framework For Adaptive Change At Large Churches, Beau J. Johnson
Why We Fail To Enact The Change We Need: A Framework For Adaptive Change At Large Churches, Beau J. Johnson
Doctor of Ministry
It is difficult for leaders at large churches to make changes to their ministry models. As culture rapidly evolves, large, attractional churches look to adapt their approach to reaching the unchurched. Attendance and participation in large churches continues to decline, despite the breadth of suggestions for what and how to change. These suggestions for change are often top-down, leader-centric, and rarely grounded in the academic research about change management. This paper seeks to address a comprehensive model for leading adaptive changes at large, established churches. Chapter One describes the problem, describing trends in cultural change and the impact on church …

Growth Mindset For Human Resource Development: A Scoping Review Of The Literature With Recommended Interventions, Soo Jeoung Han, Vicki Stieha
Organizational Performance and Workplace Learning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Although the concept of mindsets is relatively ubiquitous in the common press and well-studied in the education literature, the idea of a growth mindset, rooted in implicit theories is less represented in human resource development (HRD) scholarly literature. Given that absence, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of a growth mindset on HRD outcomes. To achieve this purpose, we conducted a scoping literature review including research conducted globally and in a wide variety of organizations. Based on the empirical findings, we discuss three categories of HRD outcomes of mindsets: (a) individual-level outcomes (e.g., work engagement, creativity, …

Imagining A Climate Of Equity Through A Critical Theory Of Love: Using Cpar To Identify Guiding Principles That Humanize Library Work, Rachel M. Barnett, Matthew A. Witenstein
Roesch Library Staff Publications
Diversity is a core value of the American Library Association and diversity standards including cultural competencies have been adopted by the Association of College and Research Libraries. Nevertheless, academic libraries still have obstacles to overcome to embody these principles. Minorities continue to be underrepresented in the field and many encounter barriers within library cultures where cultural competency is lacking and micro aggressions are pervasive and invisible to many white colleagues. This study uses critical participatory action research to identify ways a library diversity and inclusion team can support library employees engaging in equity-minded work at a private, predominantly white Catholic …

An Administrator's Perspective On The Novel Coronavirus, Jane Beese, Melissa Mlakar
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
In our current situation, of COVID 19, many school administrators feel helpless and powerless. Bringing students back into the classroom puts leaders in a position where they cannot guarantee everyone’s safety. Leaders are under pressure to keep faculty, staff, and students safe and that responsibility can be overwhelming (National Association of Secondary School Principals, 2020a). Administrators have an obligation to provide an education to students. It is what educators, do, after all. However, school leaders also have an obligation as an employer to make sure our staff is supported and safe. It is hard to believe that leaders can do …

Increased Ambiguity And Resistance While New College Leaders Learn Their Roles, Christopher A. Gearin, Brian Dunican, John Castles
Journal of Educational Leadership in Action
This article explores tolerance of ambiguity and its effect on change resistance from the perception of new higher education presidents who often feel overwhelmed by the level of perceived resistance while they learn a new environment. Two separate yet complementary studies were compared for resistance to change: one qualitative and one quantitative. The qualitative study used a phenomenological approach to explore a new higher education leaders’ perspective of facing resistance during the change process. The quantitative study examined the 36-question survey results of individual higher education employees affected by higher education change. The intersection of the two studies explored, through …

Job Satisfaction Among Peer Support Staff In Mental Health Treatment And Recovery-Oriented Settings, Jonathan P. Edwards
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Introduction/Objective: Peer support practice in mental health treatment and recovery-oriented service settings has seen exponential growth during the past several decades. An estimated 25,000 certified peer specialists in the United States alone necessitates a deeper understanding of factors that are associated with job satisfaction. While there exists a body of research on this topic, many of these studies were conducted with limited sample sizes, within discrete practice settings and geographic regions, often focused on one facet of job satisfaction (e.g., compensation), and lacked racial diversity in the sample. The current study addresses these limitations by examining multiple factors associated with …

Employability Under The Fourth Industrial Revolution, Alexandrina Maria Pauceanu, Nada Rabie, Ayman Moustafa
All Works
It is expected that the fourth industrial revolution will have a massive impact on individual career future experience by changing the basis of work, employment, and business in the upcoming future. Moreover, one-third of today's jobs will disappear by 2025 due to technology's intelligence development. Thus, students' employability skills are considered an effective tool to sustain employment at the future labour market. However, there are discrepancies in employability skills vision between higher education students' perspectives and those of employers. This study aims to recognize higher education students' perspectives about employability skills and to compare them with the labour market employability …

The historical and current dispute on how to educate middle grade students continues to puzzle today’s leaders of school systems nationwide. As a result of conflicting research on academically high performing schools, scholars and school decision makers continue the discussion on the influence of grade span configurations on academic performance. The purpose of my mixed method case study was to explore how teachers and school principals perceive the role of collective efficacy as influencing academic performance for grade eight students in the school under study. My study obtained input from school principals, district leaders, and teachers guided by the following …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Information System Literacy And Business Process Management On Organizational Performance, Ozel Sebetci
Journal of Global Business Insights
Information systems bring about many innovation opportunities for organizations. However, there are also several factors affecting these opportunities that need to be investigated. Therefore, taking this necessity as a starting point, the present study was conducted to provide an insight into the associations between Information Systems Literacy (ISL), and the analytical approach, as well as Business Process Management (BPM) usage and organization performance. To this end, a structural model has been developed to define the link between design, methodology and approach structures and study the mediating effect on the relationship between ISL, analytical approach, BPM, and organization performance. A questionnaire …

Change Management In Construction: Necessity, Obstacles,And Suggested Solutions, Ihab M. H. Saad
The Professional Constructor
The construction industry is one of the major harbingers of the economy of any industrialized nation. Its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product is undeniable. The major economic downturn that lasted from 2008 to 2011 resulted in a lot of change in the industry personnel at both the administration and labor force levels. This resulted in expediting the retirement of a generation of seasoned professionals, and creating a gap in the ranks of construction firms that is still to be completely filled. Similar impacts followed the uncertainty resulting recently from Covid-19 and the economic instability and uncertainty it caused. One …

Masculinized Second-To-Fourth Digit Ratio (2d:4d Ratio) Is Associated With Lower Cortisol Response In Infant Female Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca Mulatta), Elizabeth K. Wood, Parker Jarman, Elysha Cash, Alexander Baxter, John P. Capitanio, James Dee Higley
Faculty Publications
The second-to-fourth digit ratio (2D:4D ratio) is considered a postnatal proxy measure for the degree of prenatal androgen exposure (PAE), which is the primary factor responsible for masculinizing the brain of a developing fetus. Some studies suggest that the organizational effects of PAE may extend to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis response to stress. This study investigates the relationship between 2D:4D ratio and HPA axis functioning using a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) model. Subjects were N = 268 (180 females, 88 males) rhesus monkey infants (3–4 months of age). Plasma cortisol concentrations were assayed from two blood samples obtained …
