The Effects Of Antioxidant Status, Omega-6 To Omega-3 Ratio, And Dietary Diversity On Cognitive Performance, Jonathan Santiago Jan 2020

The Effects Of Antioxidant Status, Omega-6 To Omega-3 Ratio, And Dietary Diversity On Cognitive Performance, Jonathan Santiago

Theses and Dissertations

Past research on the relationship between nutrition and cognitive performance has suggested that dietary diversity decreased the risk of cognitive decline among Japanese older adults, that a lower ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3s is linked to a better MoCa score, and that Vitamin E was positively associated with higher scores on a variety of cognitive tests. The main purpose of this study was to compare younger adults (18-35) and older adults (65+) on measures of nutritional intake and examine how nutritional impact influences performance on a neuropsychological battery. Participants were recruited from North Dakota. There were two sets …

The Conscience Defense To Malpractice, Nadia N. Sawicki

Faculty Publications & Other Works

This Article presents the first empirical study of state conscience laws that establish explicit procedural protections for medical providers who refuse to participate in providing reproductive health services, including abortion, sterilization, contraception, and emergency contraception.

Scholarship and public debate about law's role in protecting health care providers' conscience rights typically focus on who should be protected, what actions should be protected, and whether there should be any limitations on the exercise of conscience rights. This study, conducted in accordance with best methodological practices from the social sciences for policy surveillance and legal mapping, is the first to provide concrete data …

Theses and Dissertations--Public Health (M.P.H. & Dr.P.H.)

Kentucky is a disparate state, ranking as one of the top states in incidence, prevalence, and mortality for both opioid use disorders (OUD) and cancer. Due to the high volume of both diseases in the state, there is a rising concern about the overlap of these two populations. Cancer and its’ treatment are known to cause chronic pain, defined as daily pain lasting 3 months or longer. Generally, chronic pain patients of any type are known to experience higher rates of opioid misuse (21-28%) and opioid dependence (8-12%) than the general population (4.1%, 0.9% respectively). The risk of OUD must …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

After policy change, educational programming has been cited as one of the most powerful tools for improving food systems and decreasing food waste. University students represent a population in which emerging habits, skills, and identity may be targeted easily and changed through on-campus educational programming. To understand how to best implement programming on impacts of food, food waste, and related issues, the factors that underlie students’ behaviors related to food waste must be understood. We analyzed factors that influence food waste–related behaviors within a university student population to understand the potential for improving targeted, school-based food waste diversion programming. Four …

The Analytics Of Vulnerable Populations In Brazil, Fernanda M. Araujo Maciel

2020

Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs became a popular measure to alleviate poverty in Latin American countries. The Brazilian CCT program, called Bolsa Família, is the largest social welfare program in the country, covering a quarter of all Brazilian households. The objective of the program is to reduce poverty and malnutrition, while providing low-income families access to public services, such as health, education, and social assistance. Since the program is based on conditions of maintaining health and schooling for children, my dissertation comprises two studies that examine the impact of Bolsa Família on educational outcomes and unhealthy behaviors of its participants. …

The Role Of Neural Precursor Cell Expressed Developmentally Down-Regulated Protein 9 In Enhanced Aggressiveness Of Hexavalent Chromium Transformed Bronchial Epithelial Cells, Peter Van Wie

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is classified as a confirmed human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research and Cancer (IARC) and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Chronic exposure to (Cr(VI)) causes malignant cell transformation in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells. These Cr(VI)-transformed cells exhibit a highly aggressive phenotype including increased migration, invasion, and angiogenesis. The Cas family protein neuronal precursor developmentally down regulated protein 9 (NEDD9/Cas-L/HEF1) was dramatically overexpressed in Cr(VI)-transformed cells compared to normal BEAS-2B cells. Knockdown of NEDD9 by its shRNA reduced migration and invasion in vitro measured by migration and invasion assays. shNEDD9 reduced tumor formation …

Are Securities Laws Effective Against Climate Change? A Proposal For Targeted Climate Related Disclosure And Ghg Reduction, Nate Chumley Jan 2020

Are Securities Laws Effective Against Climate Change? A Proposal For Targeted Climate Related Disclosure And Ghg Reduction, Nate Chumley

Fordham Journal of Corporate & Financial Law

The New York Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Exxon Mobil on October 24, 2018, claiming the company committed securities fraud in order to prop up the value of the company by publicly disclosing a higher proxy cost—or projected future cost—of climate change regulation than the internal cost used. Following this lawsuit, a federal class action was filed utilizing the same legal theory on the same facts. These lawsuits should be viewed as part of the larger history of lawsuits against large fossil fuel companies for climate change-related harms. Public nuisance theory largely captured a set of lawsuits against these …

External Validation Of An Electronic Phenotyping Algorithm To Detect Attention To Elevated Bmi And Weight-Related Comorbidities In Pediatric Primary Care., Anya Golkowski Barron

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Pediatric obesity is a growing national and global concern with nearly 1 in 5 children in the U.S. affected [1].The American Academy of Pediatrics endorsed expert committee recommendations in 2007 to assist clinicians in pediatric weight management; however, adherence to these recommendations among primary care providers is suboptimal, and measuring adherence in feasible and pragmatic ways is challenging[2-4]. Commonly used quality measures that rely on billing data alone are an inadequate measure of provider attention to weight status in pediatric populations as they do not capture whether providers communicate about elevated body mass index (BMI) and associated medical risks with …

Planned Behavior And Congolese Physicians’ Practice: Predicting Advanced Preventive Health Services Provision, Jean-Clément Milabu Mumbusi

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The provision of preventive services, health promotion, and health maintenance has become the cornerstone of primary care practice in the United States and other Western countries to prevent morbidity and premature mortality and to increase the quality and years of a healthy life. Unfortunately, the delivery of these advanced preventive health services (APHS) has been sporadic in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country with poor health indicators. The purpose of this cross-sectional mixed-method study was to apply Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior (TPB) to predict the intention of Congolese primary care physicians (PCPs) in the provision of APHS. Using …

Evidence-Based Practice Guideline: Breastfeeding Support Of The Active Duty Servicewoman, Heidi A. Koslo

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

There is no policy on breastfeeding support of the active duty military servicewoman at the targeted military treatment facility, and no global policy serving active duty personnel applicable at the Department of Defense and Defense Health Agency (DoD/DHA) level to span across branches of the U.S. military. Nurses, as members of the most trusted profession, are often expected to know how to assist a mother in meeting her feeding goals. Creation of an evidence-based practice guideline (EBPG) for support of the active duty servicewoman in the military health system was the purpose of this project. The project was conceptualized within …

Using Sexton’s conceptualization of the penal subjective consciousness model as a guide, the purpose of this phenomenological study was to better understand the experiences of confined offenders related to their experiences regarding the perspectives of prison officials based on a variety of factors including criminal background, social status, and programming needs. Data from semi-structured interviews with 25 participants addressed the process of communication between prison personnel and inmates from the time of incarceration through placement in isolation confinement, and then …

Systematic Review Of Loss-Frame Messaging And Change In Health Behavior, Eddie Jean Simmons Jan 2020

Systematic Review Of Loss-Frame Messaging And Change In Health Behavior, Eddie Jean Simmons

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Recent analysis estimates Type II diabetes affects 23.4 million people in the US. Approximately 30% of these patients are not in optimal control of their diabetes, raising risks for blindness, amputation, and cardiac disease. A gap in diabetes education practice is that traditional positive-framed messaging has not persuaded many patients to modify their self-management behaviors. There is a need for alternative ways to communicate the risks of not managing the disease to patients who may have different health beliefs. The purpose of this systematic review was to examine the best available evidence regarding the efficacy of loss-frame messaging when used …

Nurse Leaders’ Perspectives On Animal-Assisted Interventions, Samantha Vita Abate Jan 2020

Nurse Leaders’ Perspectives On Animal-Assisted Interventions, Samantha Vita Abate

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Knowledge deficits and unfavorable attitudes are commonly cited barriers that prevent adoption of animal-assisted interventions (AAIs). Nurse leaders’ (NLs’) knowledge of and attitudes toward AAIs have not been well documented in the literature. The purpose of this study was to identify NLs’ perspective on AAI, including their usage, knowledge, and attitudes. This information may be helpful in overcoming common barriers to AAI usage. The theory of transformational leadership guided this 3-manuscript dissertation study, which included 3 studies on NLs’ use of AAIs, the relationship between NLs’ knowledge of AAIs and NLs attitudes toward AAIs, and the potential impact of AAI …

Strategies For Teaching New Mothers The Importance Of Vaccination, Halimat Akojie Jan 2020

Strategies For Teaching New Mothers The Importance Of Vaccination, Halimat Akojie

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Vaccinations provide protection against a number of severe childhood communicable diseases, such as polio, measles, and pertussis. However, not all parents follow the recommended immunization schedules for their young children, a decision which could lead to increased disease incidence and prevalence. The purpose of this DNP project was to address the gap-in-practice related to ineffective strategies to reduce vaccination refusal among parents. This systematic review sought to understand strategies effective at teaching new mothers the importance of vaccinating their children. The theoretical foundation for addressing this question is Rogers’ protection motivation theory, which explains that sources of information, mediating cognitive …

Experiences Of College Freshmen Women Who Eat In A Social Environment, Kylie Cowens Blodgett Jan 2020

Experiences Of College Freshmen Women Who Eat In A Social Environment, Kylie Cowens Blodgett

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The social cognitive theory suggests that social surroundings influence health behaviors, and social modeling literature supports that eating behaviors are influenced by social norms. Eating decisions are especially vulnerable to social influence during the transition to college, although current interventions do not address social influence in the context of the eating environment itself or consider how men and women may experience this environment differently. This generic qualitative study explored how freshmen women perceived their experiences eating in a cafeteria setting. The research questions investigated freshmen women’s perceptions about social influence on self-efficacy, self-regulation, outcome expectations, and modeling of normative information …
