Going For The Green: Social Equity In The Recreational Cannabis Industry, Benjamin P. Sheppard
Going For The Green: Social Equity In The Recreational Cannabis Industry, Benjamin P. Sheppard
Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive
In the Summer of 2020 Americans marched in the streets to protest police brutality and the killing of George Floyd. Some activists point out that the disparate enforcement of the war on drugs frequently makes minorities a frequent target for police brutality. After decades of total war, the war on drugs is showing signs of drawing down as 11 states have legalized recreational cannabis. Nonetheless, as states legalize recreational cannabis rich white entrepreneurs enjoy a greater share of legalization’s economic benefits. Seeking to remedy this problem, six states have enacted cannabis social equity laws that encourage the participation of individuals …

Soil Management Systems To Overcome Multiple Constraints For Dryland Crops On Deep Sands In A Water Limited Environment On The South Coast Of Western Australia, David J. Hall, Stephen L. Davies, Richard W. Bell, Tom Edwards
Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Deep sands on the south coast sandplain of Western Australia (WA) have multiple soil constraints including water repellence, high soil strength, low nutrient levels and subsoil acidity. The aim of the study was to test contrasting methods of managing water repellence and to assess their impacts on one or more soil constraints to crop production. These methods included seeding tyne design (knife point, winged points, paired row), soil wetting agent addition, strategic inversion tillage (rotary spading, mouldboard ploughing to 0.35 m) and clay-rich subsoil addition (170 t ha−1 with incorporation by spading to 0.20 or 0.35 m). Limesand (2 t …

Tackle Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition With Epigenetic Drugs In Cancer, Bo Dong, Zhaoping Qiu, Yadi Wu
Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications
Epithelial-mesenchymal Transition (EMT) is a de-differentiation process in which epithelial cells lose their epithelial properties to acquire mesenchymal features. EMT is essential for embryogenesis and wound healing but is aberrantly activated in pathological conditions like fibrosis and cancer. Tumor-associated EMT contributes to cancer cell initiation, invasion, metastasis, drug resistance and recurrence. This dynamic and reversible event is governed by EMT-transcription factors (EMT-TFs) with epigenetic complexes. In this review, we discuss recent advances regarding the mechanisms that modulate EMT in the context of epigenetic regulation, with emphasis on epigenetic drugs, such as DNA demethylating reagents, inhibitors of histone modifiers and non-coding …
Decentralization, Local Government Fiscal Independence, And Poverty: Evidence From Philippine Provinces, Tristan A. Canare
Decentralization, Local Government Fiscal Independence, And Poverty: Evidence From Philippine Provinces, Tristan A. Canare
Economics Department Faculty Publications
Decentralization has become a popular development program among middle- and low-income economies worldwide. The rationale behind decentralization is the local government’s proximity to consumers gives it an information advantage over the central government on needs and preferences. However, the central government has economies of scale and has access to more resources. Using data from Philippine provinces, this paper studies the relationship between decentralization – as represented by local government fiscal independence and as measured by locally sourced revenues expressed as share of total revenue – and poverty incidence. It finds evidence that fiscal independence is associated with lower poverty, but …

Carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are the underlying energy sources for animals and are catabolized through specific biochemical cascades involving numerous enzymes. The catabolites and metabolites in these metabolic pathways are crucial for many cellular functions; therefore, an imbalance and/or dysregulation of these pathways causes cellular dysfunction, resulting in various metabolic diseases. Bone, a highly mineralized organ that serves as a skeleton of the body, undergoes continuous active turnover, which is required for the maintenance of healthy bony components through the deposition and resorption of bone matrix and minerals. This highly coordinated event is regulated throughout life by bone cells such …

Hemp Fiber – An Environmentally Friendly Fiber For Concrete Reinforcement, Brian Giltner
Theses and Dissertations
The commercial use of hemp fiber in the construction industry within the United States is non-existent. This lack of use is because of State and Federal laws forbidding the growth of hemp in the United States, which has led to a lack of research. Not having an established supply chain for hemp and coupled with limited research has put the United States behind other countries in finding viable options for these renewable resources. This is a study of the performance of raw hemp fibers and processed hemp twine in a cement past mixture subjected to tensile loading. Three water/cement ratios …

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are near-ubiquitous and chemically complex metabolites, prototypical of higher plants. Their roles in food/feed/nutrition and ethnomedicine are widely recognized but poorly understood. With the analysis of evidence that underlies this challenge, this perspective identifies shortcomings in capturing and delineating PAC structures as key factors. While several groups have forwarded new representations, a consensus method that captures PAC structures concisely and offers high integrity for electronic storage is required to reduce confusion in this expansive field. The PAC block arrays (PACBAR) system fills this gap by providing precise and human- and machine-readable structural descriptors that capture PAC metabolomic structural …

A Longitudinal Descriptive Study On The Sleep Of Young Adults With Developmental Disabilities, Emily E. Grubbs
Theses and Dissertations
Sleep is vital for optimal physical and mental health, as well as cognitive and social functioning. Young adults with developmental disabilities (DD) are at greater risk for physical and mental health disorders and experience limitations in cognitive and social functioning in ways that can prevent participation in meaningful activities associated with young adulthood. Sleep literature has reflected that persons with DD experience worse sleep than persons without DD. Suboptimal sleep could compromise functionality and thus participation in young adulthood activities. Not much is known however of the nature of sleep problems experienced by young adults with DD. This study is …

Household Food Insecurity And Its Determinants In The United States, Sweta Tiwari
Theses and Dissertations
Food insecurity is one of the biggest challenges facing American society today. Over 13.7 million US households were food insecure in the year 2019 and 19 million Americans lived in food deserts in the year 2015 (USDA, 2020, 2017). Despite food insecurities affecting communities in every corner of the country, there is a dearth of research on food security and food deserts. Therefore, the main objectives of this study are 1) to identify underlying neighborhood characteristics that predict the communities at higher nutritional risk, 2) to analyze the impacts of household characteristics on household food insecurity, and 3) to examine …
