Metabolomics Of Acid Whey Derived From Greek Yogurt, Muriel Mercedes Allen Nov 2020

Metabolomics Of Acid Whey Derived From Greek Yogurt, Muriel Mercedes Allen

Theses and Dissertations

Acid whey, a byproduct of Greek yogurt production, has little commercial value due to its low protein content and is also environmentally harmful when disposed of as waste. However, as a product of microbial fermentation, acid whey could be a rich source of beneficial metabolites associated with fermented foods. This study increases understanding of acid whey composition by providing a complete metabolomic profile of acid whey. Commercial and lab-made Greek yogurts, prepared with three different bacterial culture combinations, were evaluated. Samples of unfermented yogurt mix and cultured whey from each batch were analyzed. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry metabolomics were …

The Pandemic Syllabus, Sarah J. Schendel

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

A syllabus is a contract, an introduction, a statement of values, a todo list, a plan. It is often the point of first contact between professor and student, or between student and an area of law. Beyond the technological challenges, for many professors Fall 2020 was also the first-time coming up with a camera policy or amending attendance expectations to consider a pandemic. For some, this is also the first time explicitly engaging in antiracist pedagogy in the classroom or considering practices like trauma informed teaching. This essay offers a practical, “nuts and bolts” walkthrough of promising practices for each …

Para duodenal hernias, the most common type of retroperitoneal hernias, are thought to occur naturally from abnormal gut rotation because of fusion folds within the peritoneum. Retroperitoneal hernias are a rare postoperative complication and have not been described after renal transplantation via a retroperitoneal approach. This case report presents a 48-year-old male with intestinal obstruction after renal transplant due to herniation into the retroperitoneum via an incidentally created peritoneal defect. We suggest computed tomography with oral contrast be used in the early postoperative phase to assess for obstruction in patients with prolonged ileus of unclear etiology who have undergone retroperitoneal …

South Texas is located in a subtropical semiarid climate, and due to high temperature and irregular precipitation, farmers opt to leave their fields fallow during the summer months jeopardizing overall soil health. We evaluated whether sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cultivation coupled with drip irrigation could restore soil biological activities compared with bare fallow. Additionally, because sweet potatoes have high demand of soil nutrients, especially potassium (K), we evaluated the nutrient supply of locally sourced soil amendments. Sweet potato was cultivated during summer 2018 in McAllen, Texas, under control (no fertilizer), NPK (synthetic fertilizer), RC (yard-waste compost), and AC (compost produced …
