The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll Mar 2020

The Unique Demands Of Playing Posture On Youth Violinists And Violists, Liam Carroll

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The high prevalence of performing arts injuries is an acknowledged challenge facing the performing arts medicine community. The injuries seem to affect string players the most among orchestral musicians, specifically violinists and violists. The asymmetrical posture, head and neck displacement, and spinal displacement required by the posture to play violin and viola can lead to discomfort or injury in the performer. Performance related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) can have an adverse impact on the life of a musician, preventing them from performing or making it uncomfortable. While there is a large body of research on PRMDs relating to adult musicians, there …

Comparative Sulfur Use Efficiency And Water Stress Tolerance In Two Brassica Napus Cultivars, Bok-Rye Lee, Tae-Hwan Kim, Sang-Hyun Park, Qian Zhang, Rashed Zaman Mar 2020

Comparative Sulfur Use Efficiency And Water Stress Tolerance In Two Brassica Napus Cultivars, Bok-Rye Lee, Tae-Hwan Kim, Sang-Hyun Park, Qian Zhang, Rashed Zaman

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

S-deficiency and/or S-deprivation decreases the cell sap osmotic potential resulting from a net increase of intracellular solutes rather than from a loss of cell water and chlorophyll content resulting in a restriction of Rubisco synthesis and provoked the chlorosis of young leaves (Lee et al., 2014; Muneer et al., 2014). These imply that S-deficiency results in a general inhibition of photosynthesis and protein synthesis. On the other hand, several studies have indicated that S nutrition has a potential role in stress tolerance and defense mechanism. Sulfur is an essential element in the formation of sulfhydryl (S-H) and disulphide bond …

Enzymatic saccharification of ligno-cellulosic material is a key process in advanced biofuel production. Different enzymes are required in the enzymatic saccharification. To meet the large demand of these enzymes for industrial purposes, a transgenic maize seed expression system had been utilized in our laboratory to acquire adequate and cost-effective pure enzymes including β-1,4-endoglucanase, cellobiohydrolase I, cellobiohydrolase II and expansin. In this dissertation, the possibility of utilizing maize-produced recombinant cellulases in promoting the saccharification of ligno-cellulosic material was investigated. From the purification and basic characterization of these target enzymes to the identification of different inhibitors, this project has partially addressed the …

Student Knowledge Of Preterm Infant Feeding And Swallowing Therapy Protocols, Hailey Ashlyn Hickerson Mar 2020

Student Knowledge Of Preterm Infant Feeding And Swallowing Therapy Protocols, Hailey Ashlyn Hickerson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Given that SLPs have such a wide scope of practice, graduate programs have a large amount of curriculum to cover: language, cognition, articulation, swallowing, pragmatics, and other areas. As a result, graduate students may feel inadequately prepared to work in infant feeding and swallowing settings. If graduate programs adequately educate their students on infant feeding and swallowing, more SLP students may decide to pursue employment and specialize in infant feeding and swallowing intervention to aid in therapy services for vulnerable infants with feeding and swallowing difficulties. The purpose of this study was to examine whether graduate school students feel adequately …

Unearthing The Consequences Of The U.S.’S Conventional Food System: How To Frame Analysis, Assess Damages And Cope With The Realities, Katherine James Clark Mar 2020

Unearthing The Consequences Of The U.S.’S Conventional Food System: How To Frame Analysis, Assess Damages And Cope With The Realities, Katherine James Clark

Student Theses and Dissertations

The U.S.’s conventional food system has driven many of the country’s most serious health concerns. Since the food system was molded by historical events, policy changes, and industrial evolution, the totality of the consequences has only been realized in the last several decades. Despite the attention the issues have garnered, it is likely improvement has not been observed because: 1) the resulting consequences and their dynamics have not been viewed in a comprehensive, interactive light; 2) many previous efforts have only focused on one segment of the issue and have not taken a holistic approach; and, 3) political and industrial …

A Comparative Analysis Of Army Body Composition Standards For U.S. Army Recruits, Adam Garrett Tedford

Student Theses and Dissertations

PURPOSE: to determine if there were comparable differences using air plethysmography and skinfold measurements to the U.S. Army standard means of measuring BF%. METHODS: BF% was measured in 27 women (21.5 ± 1.8 years) using: 7-site skinfold, air plethysmography, and Army Body Composition (ABC) measurements. The Initial Physical Fitness Test (IPFT) was used to determine if participants met the criteria required for admittance into basic combat training. RESULTS: Pairwise comparisons revealed that the BF% estimate for ABC was 7.05 ± 1.11 % higher compared to skinfold (p < .001). The air plethysmography method (26.9 ± 8.4 %) yielded statistically higher (p < .001) BF% compared to skinfold. Of the 27 total participants, 4 (14.8%) passed IPFT but failed the ABC. CONCLUSION: Primary findings suggest that use of the ABC method for measuring body composition of females overestimated BF% when air plethysmography was used as criterion measure.

Chromatin-Binding Protein Phf6 Regulates Activity-Dependent Transcriptional Networks To Promote Hunger Response, Linhua Gan, Cheng Cheng, Azad Bonni, Et Al Mar 2020

Chromatin-Binding Protein Phf6 Regulates Activity-Dependent Transcriptional Networks To Promote Hunger Response, Linhua Gan, Cheng Cheng, Azad Bonni, Et Al

Open Access Publications

Understanding the mechanisms of activity-dependent gene transcription underlying adaptive behaviors is challenging at neuronal-subtype resolution. Using cell-type specific molecular analysis in agouti-related peptide (AgRP) neurons, we reveal that the profound hunger-induced transcriptional changes greatly depend on plant homeodomain finger protein 6 (PHF6), a transcriptional repressor enriched in AgRP neurons. Loss of PHF6 in the satiated mice results in a hunger-state-shifting transcriptional profile, while hunger fails to further induce a rapid and robust activity-dependent gene transcription in PHF6-deficient AgRP neurons. We reveal that PHF6 binds to the promoters of a subset of immediate-early genes (IEGs) and that this chromatin binding is …

MicroRNA-31 (miR-31) is overexpressed in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), a deadly disease associated with dietary Zn deficiency and inflammation. In a Zn deficiency-promoted rat ESCC model with miR-31 up-regulation, cancer-associated inflammation, and a high ESCC burden following N-nitrosomethylbenzylamine (NMBA) exposure, systemic antimiR-31 delivery reduced ESCC incidence from 85 to 45% (P = 0.038) and miR-31 gene knockout abrogated development of ESCC (P = 1 × 10-6). Transcriptomics, genome sequencing, and metabolomics analyses in these Zn-deficient rats revealed the molecular basis of ESCC abrogation by miR-31 knockout. Our identification of EGLN3, a known negative regulator of nuclear …

De Estatura Regular: Height And Filipino Bodily Representations During The Spanish Colonial Period (1521–1898), Gideon; University Lasco

Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints

Thisarticle seeks to contribute to the “history of height” in the Philippines by looking at Filipino bodily representations and height differences during the Spanish colonial period. From Pigafetta’s account onward, European chroniclers typically described Indios (natives) as having average, varied, or unremarkable height. However, during the nineteenth century a new discourse emerged: that of a short-statured Filipino. Likely the consequence of actual physical changes and nascent racial ideologies on the part of Spaniards, this view would set the stage for Filipinos to be typologizedas “short”—and for shortness to be problematized as a sign of racial and social inferiority.KEYWORDS: HEIGHT • …

Terms Of Service: The Use And Protection Of Genomic Information By Companies, Databases, And Law Enforcement, Sophia Kallas

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

Private genomic companies have become a popular trend in the last two decades by providing customers with information regarding their ancestry and health risks. However, the profiles received from these companies can also be uploaded to public databases for various purposes, including locating other family members. Both testing companies and public databases have private interests, and both are at risk of law enforcement intervention for the purpose of forensic familial searching. There is little federal legislation protecting the privacy of an individual’s genetic profile. Consequently, it has been up to federal agencies, state laws, and judicial precedents to prevent the …

Recognizing the age-related decline in skeletal muscle feed artery (SMFA) vasodilatory function, this study examined the link between vasodilatory and mitochondrial respiratory function in the human vasculature. Twenty-four SMFAs were harvested from young (35 ± 6 yr, n = 9) and old (71 ± 9 yr, n = 15) subjects. Vasodilation in SMFAs was assessed, by pressure myography, in response to flow-induced shear stress, acetylcholine (ACh), and sodium nitroprusside (SNP) while mitochondrial respiration was measured, by respirometry, in permeabilized SMFAs. Endothelium-dependent vasodilation was significantly attenuated in the old, induced by both flow (young: 92 ± 3, old: 45 ± 4%) …

Fodder Yield Of Baby Corn (Zea Mays L.) As Influenced By Mulching, Liming And Integrated Nutrition Management Under Foot Hill Condition Of Nagaland, Rakesh Kumar, Bidyut C. Deka, Manoj Kumar, Neivah Hansing

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Baby corn (Zea mays L.) being one of the most important dual purpose crop is grown widely round the year for its cob as well as green fodder in India. It has an edge over the other cultivated fodder crops due to its higher production potential, wider adaptability, fast growing nature and excellent fodder quality free from toxicants. Baby corn production has been directly integrated with dairying farms in different countries because only 13-20% of fresh ear weight is used as human food and the rest (silk, husk and green stalk) can be used as excellent feed materials for …
