Canagliflozin To Slow Renal Insufficiency Progression In Non-Diabetic Chronic Kidney Disease, Mia Bronte Wigley
Canagliflozin To Slow Renal Insufficiency Progression In Non-Diabetic Chronic Kidney Disease, Mia Bronte Wigley
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Chronic kidney disease is a serious illness that reduces the life span and quality of life in diagnosed patients. Despite advancements in medical management, progression to end-stage renal disease persists. While the renoprotective effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors in diabetes mellitus patients are well-documented, no studies have examined the efficacy of these drugs in treating renal disease in the absence of diabetes mellitus. The objective of this trial is to determine whether canagliflozin, a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor, can improve renal outcomes in patients with non-diabetic chronic kidney disease. Utilizing a double-blind, randomized control trial design, we will examine the effects …

Over one million Americans are diagnosed with brain diseases or disorders each year. This means brain disease is very common, and because most brain diseases are incurable, it is vital that more information on prevention is provided. Brain training is a program of regular activities that claims to maintain or improve one’s cognitive abilities. Cognitive abilities are brain-based skills required to perform various mental tasks, from the simplest to the most complex. This presentation will discuss the effects that brain training activities have on cognition and brain function.
Did Eating Human Poop Play A Role In The Evolution Of Dogs?, Harold Herzog
Did Eating Human Poop Play A Role In The Evolution Of Dogs?, Harold Herzog
Herzog - Companion Animal Issues
In one study, around 16% of pet dogs in the USA regularly consumed feces. Another study from Ethiopia found that dogs (but not wolves) regularly consumed human feces and further research discovered many examples of dogs eating human feces. Among the iKung bushmen in Southern Africa, dogs are not eaten because of their consumption of human waste. This behavior may have been important in the evolution of dogs because human waste is typical high in protein.

Do different income levels affect the foods people consume? It is commonly known that healthier foods are more expensive than unhealthy foods. Those with lower incomes tend to gravitate toward fast food and junk food, with those with higher incomes tend to gravitate toward fruits, vegetables, and healthier options, including having personal chefs and ordering proportioned meals delivered to their homes. Lower income people consuming unhealthy foods potentially leads to health issues such as malnutrition, high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes. Not everyone is aware of the health side effects of their diets. It is shown that people who are …

The Survival Of The American Beef Farmer In Today’S Market, Zackary Heustess
Showcase of Undergraduate Research and Creative Endeavors (SOURCE)
Once the world’s agriculture leader, the United States has lost dominance over recent decades to international competitors, specifically Brazil. Since the number of American farms reached its peak at 6.8 million in 1935, this number has fallen drastically to 2.1 million by 2002. This paper will touch on one specific area of this field, beef cattle farming. Even with annual beef consumption continuing to increase in the United States, some developing trends might threaten farmers even further in the near future. These trends include the rapid scaling of corporate farming, the increased concern over the environmental impact from red meat, …

Suicidal Bacteria Strikes Again!: Influencing Culture Condition For Promotion Of Enhanced Growth And Increased Sustainability For Laboratory Maintenance Of Fastidious Organisms: Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Lactococcus Lactis, And Serratia Marcescens, Savannah Marie Temple, Tim J. O'Donnell
2020 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Of the estimated one trillion on Earth, only a small portion of microbes have been thoroughly studied and documented. Those organisms that are considered ‘fastidious’ require complex or particular nutrients and can be difficult to culture due to an inability to simulate their niche ecological environment in a culture medium. We plan to conduct a series of trials to test the effectiveness of three different culture medium; Luria, Nutrient, and Brain-Heart Infusion, against a commonly used medium, Tryptic Soy – on fastidious microbes: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactococcus lactis, and Serratia marcescens. When refrigerated for storage, many microbes experience extended …

Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health Publications
Background
Past research in population health trends has shown that injuries form a substantial burden of population health loss. Regular updates to injury burden assessments are critical. We report Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2017 Study estimates on morbidity and mortality for all injuries.
Methods
We reviewed results for injuries from the GBD 2017 study. GBD 2017 measured injury-specific mortality and years of life lost (YLLs) using the Cause of Death Ensemble model. To measure non-fatal injuries, GBD 2017 modelled injury-specific incidence and converted this to prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs). YLLs and YLDs were summed to calculate …

Determining Ideal Swab Type For Collection Of The Microbiome For Forensic Identification Purposes, Natalie M. Wise
Honors Projects
In recent years, forensic scientists have begun looking at the microbiome as a new possible human identification method. The microbiome is made up of all the microorganisms living on or in the human body.1 It is believed that it may be possible to use the microbiome as a unique identifier, to link cohabitating individuals, or even to connect a person with a specific location. In order to study the microbiome, we must first be able to successfully collect it, and then, release it from that collection tool for examination. This may sound simple, but this area of research is …
Filling The Gap: Assessing Moral Permissibility Of Rejections In Dental Practices And Promoting Pro Bono Dental Work Through A Non-Profit Organization, Min Son
Richard T. Schellhase Essay Prize in Ethics
While the level of urgency in dentistry cannot compare to that in an emergency room, oral healthcare is a crucial part of overall health. Poor oral health can lead to systemic health conditions, such as heart and respiratory diseases, oral cancer, and diabetes. Therefore, the solution to health disparities may lie in addressing oral health disparities first. Nonetheless, most dentists are business owners of their own dental practices. Hence, they work in between business and patient care, sometimes facing associated conflicts. But they are obligated to make ethical decisions when the values between the two fields clash. The dental community …
Effects Of Pesticide Residue Accumulation On Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Development And Implications For Hive Management, Jennifer Weisbrod
Effects Of Pesticide Residue Accumulation On Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.) Development And Implications For Hive Management, Jennifer Weisbrod
Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) colonies face annual declines of 40% in the United States. Pesticides play a role in these losses. Pesticide residues picked up from the environment as well as beekeeper-applied compounds may accumulate within the hive. The effects of pesticide accumulation in comb on bee health mitigation of accumulation have not been well-studied. To examine pesticide exposure on health and development, chlorothalonil and the amitraz metabolite N-(2,4-dimethylphenyl) formamidine (DMPF), two pesticides found in hive products, were applied to brood comb. Queen bees were caged onto treated and control comb and egg laying and development were assessed. …

The Effects Of Temperature On Evacuation Rates And Absorption Efficiency Of Flathead Catfish, Zach Horstman
School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Knowledge of fish gastric evacuation rates are a necessary component for both field and laboratory studies when trying to understand feeding rates, modeling energy budgets, and understanding trophic dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. Many freshwater fish encounter a broad range of environmental temperatures across life history stages, but the mechanistic link between temperature and physiological processes often remains poorly understood. We designed three recirculating aquatic systems capable of rearing Flathead Catfish Plyodictis olivaris in order to quantify gastric evacuation rates and gross energy absorption at three temperatures (17º C, 22º C and 25º C). We examined the relationship between temperature and …

Consumption of kombucha has been shown to promote human gut health and act as an antibacterial agent against enteric pathogens. This thesis investigates if kombucha consumption changes the composition of the human gut microbiota and aims to measure its inhibitory effects on the growth of an enteric pathogen, Salmonella typhimurium. We predicted consumption of kombucha will alter the composition of the gut microbiota and demonstrate antibacterial activity in the presence of S. typhimurium. Research suggested that alterations in the gut microbiota is associated with multiple chronic diseases. It is further noted that kombucha and other probiotics may be used to …

Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day (2018-)
This study explores Minnesota’s current angling culture and how it may be detrimental to aquatic ecosystems. The state’s current angling culture is centered around catching walleye (Sander vitreus), the state fish. The species has rightfully earned its reputation amongst anglers, but the impacts associated with its popularity may be negative. This research looks primarily at which factors of the angling culture are detrimental and where anglers and fisheries managers need to make improvements. The current motivations and practices of anglers cannot continue, as walleye abundance is on the decline due to angling pressure and hydrological changes. Walleye are not the …

Research Tools And Their Uses For Determining The Thermal Inactivation Kinetics Of Salmonella In Low-Moisture Foods, Soon Kiat Lau
Research Tools And Their Uses For Determining The Thermal Inactivation Kinetics Of Salmonella In Low-Moisture Foods, Soon Kiat Lau
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The reputation of low-moisture foods as safe foods has been crumbling over the past decade due to repeated involvement in foodborne illness outbreaks. Although various pasteurization technologies exist, a majority are thermal processes and have not been well-characterized for pasteurizing low-moisture foods. In addition, the nature of a low-moisture food matrix introduces various experimental complications that are not encountered in high-moisture foods. In this dissertation, the development, building instructions, and characterization of various open source tools for studying the inactivation kinetics of microorganisms in low-moisture foods are described. The first tool is the TDT Sandwich, a dry heating device for …

The marketing tactics used to promote food products in the United States has grown exponentially over recent years. Companies no longer promote products through traditional television commercials alone but utilize their ability to reach consumers through a multitude of modern social media outlets. Because of this, food promotions are all around us. However, the advertising and marketing of food targeted at children and adolescents may not be as harmless as it seems. This article explores why the progressive target marketing of food to children may be a key factor in the rapid growth rate of childhood obesity in the United …

Characterizing The Epidemiology Of Bluetongue And Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus In Louisiana, Michael Edward Becker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Bluetongue virus (BTV) and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease Virus (EHDV) are arthropod-borne viruses (Reoviridae; Orbivirus) transmitted by biting midges in the genus Culicoides. These viruses cause hemorrhagic disease and induce serious morbidity and mortality rates in wild and captive deer. Cattle are normally asymptomatic but serve as the reservoir/amplifying host for these viruses and play an important role in the transmission cycle. The objectives of this study were to characterize the epidemiology of these viruses as they relate to white-tailed deer and cattle, evaluate different trap types for collecting Culicoides midges, and determine if these viruses can be detected …

Maternal Investment By An Unmated Triangulate Cobweb Spider, Nicholas Tijerina, Deby L. Cassill
USF St. Petersburg campus Student Research Symposium
Introduction
Triangulate cobweb spiders are a species in the family Theriidae. In nature, they tend to be found around wood piles and under rocks while in manmade environments, they tend to hide under furniture, gardening equipment, bridges, and other things that typically aren’t moved around much by humans, (Chiri, n.d..) They tend to produce egg sacs even if they aren’t viable, (Van Ert. 2016,) like the one in our study who tended to her egg sacs even though the eggs had not been unfertilized by a male.
Thesis
Maternal Investment is indicated by the number of eggs produced, even if …
