Evaluating The Effects Of A Brief Acceptance And Commitment Therapy Intervention On Environmentally Sustainable Behavior, Anne Sheerin
Theses
The purpose of the present study was to use the principles of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to increase environmentally sustainable behavior among seven college-aged students. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy involves increasing mindfulness and psychological flexibility. All participants filled out a daily survey that ranked how much they had participated in environmentally sustainable behavior or if they had the opportunity to participate in it at all. Four participants then received three individual, brief ACT sessions with the researcher and three of these participants showed an average of a 20% increase overall in self-reported sustainable behaviors after the brief intervention in …
Growing Food In Space: A Comparison Of Led And Solar-Fiber-Optic Technologies, Paul Kusuma, J. Matthew Hardy
Growing Food In Space: A Comparison Of Led And Solar-Fiber-Optic Technologies, Paul Kusuma, J. Matthew Hardy
Utah Space Grant Consortium
Growing food on Mars for long-term space exploration has many benefits including reduced fuel and cost requirements for lift-off, improved nutrition and psychological benefits for astronauts, air purification, and oxygen and water regeneration. However, complications are caused by the thin atmosphere on Mars, which would force production underground or into a heavily armored shelter. Providing the massive number of photons necessary to grow food is expensive and careful consideration must be made regarding the most promising technologies. The two most promising options are a combination of either concentrating mirrors coupled to solar-fiber-optics (SFO), or photovoltaics (PV) coupled to light-emitting diodes …

Ketogenic diets (KDs) are becoming increasingly popular for the treatment of diabetes, yet they are associated with increased frequency of hypoglycemia. Here we report that mice fed a KD display blunted glucagon release to hypoglycemia and neuroglucopenia, suggesting that consuming a KD may increase the risk for iatrogenic hypoglycemia.

Chronic stress causes dysregulations of mood and energy homeostasis, but the neurocircuitry underlying these alterations remain to be fully elucidated. Here we demonstrate that chronic restraint stress in mice results in hyperactivity of pro-opiomelanocortin neurons in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus (POMCARH neurons) associated with decreased neural activities of dopamine neurons in the ventral tegmental area (DAVTA neurons). We further revealed that POMCARH neurons project to the VTA and provide an inhibitory tone to DAVTA neurons via both direct and indirect neurotransmissions. Finally, we show that photoinhibition of the POMCARH→VTA circuit in mice increases body weight and food intake, …

Purpose: Incidence and mortality rates of uterine cancer are increasing and, obesity, which is also rising, has been associated with uterine cancer development and mortality. A recent study found that poor sleep quality is common among endometrial cancer survivors and those with obesity had more sleep disturbances than those having normal weight. However, it is unclear if higher levels of obesity (Class III, BMI ≥ 40 kg/m2), which are rising rapidly, are differentially associated with sleep as well as depression and quality of life in endometrial cancer survivors. Methods: We evaluated sleep, depression, and quality of life in 100 Stage …
Impact Of Calorie Restriction On Energy Metabolism In Humans, Jasper Most, Leanne Maree Redman
Impact Of Calorie Restriction On Energy Metabolism In Humans, Jasper Most, Leanne Maree Redman
Clinical Research Faculty Publications
Calorie restriction (CR) is the most potent, non-pharmacological intervention to support metabolic health. The effects of calorie restriction exceed weight loss. Consistent throughout many studies, calorie restriction induces a reduction in energy expenditure that is larger than the loss of metabolic mass, i.e. fat-free mass and fat mass, can explain. Per prevailing theories of mammalian aging, this disproportionate reduction in metabolic rate, defined as metabolic adaptation, reduces oxidative damage and thereby delays age-associated declines in physiological function. The aim of this narrative review is to investigate the origins of CR-induced metabolic adaptation. From a physiological standpoint this likely relates to …

Human beings encountered malnutrition during the twentieth century and obesity in the very next century. This is how the future will look when the present becomes a slice of history. Obesity is threatening the healthy being of many youngsters throughout the world. Environmental influences have indicated to effect even genetically safe subjects among which parental neglect seems to be most alarming. Two extensively and globally investigated variables, the feeding style and the physical activity, provide some hope in its prevention. Despite the high rise of obesity prevalence in Saudi Arabia, there is scant research on these topics. The purpose of …

From Inactivity To Full Enforcement: The Implementation Of The "Do No Harm" Approach In Initial Coin Offerings, Marco Dell'erba
Michigan Technology Law Review
This Article analyzes the way the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) has enforced securities laws with regard to Initial Coin Offerings (“ICOs”). In a speech held in 2016, the U.S. Commodities Futures Trading Commission (“CFTC”) Chairman Christopher Giancarlo emphasized the similarities between the advent of the blockchain technology and the Internet era. He offered the “do no harm” approach as the best way to regulate blockchain technology. The Clinton administration implemented the “do no harm” approach at the beginning of the Internet Era in the 1990s when regulators sought to support technological innovations without stifling them with burdensome rules.

Piecing Minds : Creating A Healing Space For Mental Health In The West End Neighborhood, Jeromette Belcher
Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year
Throughout history mental health has been an issue. Mental health has been labeled from a disease, to treatment, and to facility design. There have been design theories that have been looked at throughout the centuries such as anthroposohy, evidence-based design, generative design, planetree, salutogenic design, and specialist design. There has been facilities designed for people dealing with mental health such as residential, impatient, and outpatient. But, the impact of the environment on mental health plays a significant factor. Specifically, in the lower income neighborhoods which have a lot more issues in mental health that they face than people living in …

Eliminating Routine Gastric Residual Volume Assessments In The Intensive Care Setting, John Marshall Smith
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
This evidence-based project sought to evaluate the practice change of routine GRV elimination within a 14 bed adult intensive care unit (ICU) at a large teaching hospital in the southeastern United States. For decades, the gold standard to determine tolerance to enteral nutrition (EN) has been routine GRV assessments via aspiration. However, recent studies have concluded the practice ineffective. Critical Care guidelines published in 2016 now recommend cessation of routine GRV assessments (Ozen, et. al, 2018). In-servicing, education, and implementation of a validated protocol from the University of Virginia Medical Center was used to enact the practice change. A 30-day …
Integrating Ayurvedic Concepts With Western Measures For Treating Mental Health In India, Samarth Rao

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The mosquito, Culex pipiens f. molestus, is a scientifically relevant species due to its impact upon both human and veterinary medicine. This city dwelling disease vector lives and reproduces in underground tunnels and sewer systems throughout the world. After reproducing, adults begin searching for food above ground, but little is known about the sensory signals that guide this seeking behavior. Because cues may have a major impact on feeding and reproduction, I compared the phototaxic response of adult male and female Cx. pipiens f. molestus at different reproductive states. Virgin females, mated females, virgin males, and mated males were monitored …

Benefits Of Infant-Driven Feeding In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Literature Review, Maddison Carroll
Benefits Of Infant-Driven Feeding In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Literature Review, Maddison Carroll
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Current policy in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) is to prescribe a volume of formula or milk to ingest a certain number of times per day to infants admitted to the NICU. The method of infant-driven feeding (IDF) is believed to be a superior alternative that allows the infants to determine the timing and volume consumed and leads to better patient outcomes. To be considered in this review, the studies were required to be primary sources that were peer- reviewed, conducted in the last five years, and had to include at least one of three outcomes: weight gain, time to …

Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Sarah Brown
Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Sarah Brown
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Family-centered care has not always been integrated with patient-care. In the mid-1900's, a movement began that altered the role of the family from observer to participant. With the help of family advocates, inclusive practices and partnerships between families, patients, and providers was initiated (Kuo et al, 2012). Now, family and patient-centered care is a widely practiced form of individualized care and relationship building between families, patients and their providers. Five principles shape the foundation for family-centered care. These include information sharing, respect and honoring differences, partnership and collaboration, negotiation, and care in the context of family and community (Kuo et …
