Arguments From Evil And The Parenting Style(S) Of God, Kyle Dean Gazlay May 2020

Arguments From Evil And The Parenting Style(S) Of God, Kyle Dean Gazlay

Masters Theses

In scholarly debates there are two primary positions on whether a God who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnibenevolent can coexist with the presence of evil in the world. Atheists claim that God and evil do not coexist, while theists proclaim that God and evil can and do coexist. Atheists have used arguments from evil as a chief weapon against the existence of God and evil. Within arguments from evil, atheists create arguments that take an evidential or probabilistic stance on the matter. These arguments are called evidential arguments from evil. The evidential arguments from evil will use parent analogies to …

Mixtures of 10mg/mL MP with 0.1% and 0.2% mushroom powder in 0.3M NaCl were stored at 2ºC and 80 ºC for 10 days. Oven-dried A. bisporus had higher Folin-Ciocalteu reducing capacity at 8.05±0.71 gallic acid equivalent (GAE) mg/g compared to 4.97±0.20 GAE mg/g oven-dried P. ostreatus. Lyophilized P. ostreatus contained 164% more ergothioneine than …

Authentication Of Species In Bison Products Using Molecular Methods, Zerika Scales May 2020

Authentication Of Species In Bison Products Using Molecular Methods, Zerika Scales

Food Science (MS) Theses

American bison (Bison bison) meat is vulnerable to species substitution due to its high value and similar appearance to less expensive meats, such as beef from domestic cattle (Bos taurus). DNA barcoding of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (CO1) gene is a commonly used method to test for meat species mislabeling. However, due to historical hybridization between the American bison and domestic cattle, additional testing is required to confirm species. The objective of this study was to perform a market survey of products sold as bison meat and verify the species of each product using …

A Geospatial Examination Of The Association Between Geographic Food Access And Food Insecurity In Central Texas: The Role Of Race/Ethnicity And Urbanicity, Kathryn Janda

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Food insecurity is a public health issue that affects one in ten Americans, one in seven Central Texans, and is associated with malnutrition, chronic disease, and obesity. Geographic food access is the most intervened upon aspect of food insecurity and is often measured objectively through mapping software, such as ArcGIS. Yet when geographic food access is only measured in terms of distance to food retail, analyses do not full capture the nuances of community context. Thus, other sources of data, like survey data, and demographic indicators, such as race/ethnicity and urbanicity, should be incorporated into the research exploring the association …

Impact Of Phosphorus Intake On Beef Heifer Growth Performance And Conception Rates, Hailey Hilfiker May 2020

Impact Of Phosphorus Intake On Beef Heifer Growth Performance And Conception Rates, Hailey Hilfiker

Animal Science Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study aims to examine the effects of phosphorus intake on beef heifer growth performance and conception rates. In Northwest Arkansas, there has been an increase in phosphorus concentrations in soil where livestock manures have been repeatedly applied. Consequently, forages grown on soils high in phosphorus tend to contain high amounts of the mineral itself. This has led many to question whether it is necessary to supplement phosphorus in areas where concentrations may be higher. In this study, crossbred Angus heifers (n = 72), approximately 30 days after weaning, were stratified by body weight (average initial weight 251 ± 3.9 …

The Effects Of Knee Joint Loading On Dynamic Tasks In Individuals Several Years Post-Acl Reconstruction, Meredith Decker May 2020

The Effects Of Knee Joint Loading On Dynamic Tasks In Individuals Several Years Post-Acl Reconstruction, Meredith Decker

Kinesiology Dissertations - Archive

Joint loading of the lower extremity is studied to identify risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and to determine limb asymmetries. Asymmetrical loading in the lower extremity during ACL reconstruction (ACLR) rehabilitation and at the time of return to sport or activity will cause compensations during functional movements, which can lead to unwanted joint re-injury or long-term joint damage. Re-injury and/or development and progression of knee osteoarthritis (OA) is prevalent after ACLR; therefore, joint loading measurements at extended time points from reconstruction and after return to play may help to identify how asymmetrical loading and compensatory movement strategies …

To answer the first question, regulatory authorities in the United States and Europe now expect an evaluation of new proteins in novel foods or genetically …

Crop Yield And Democracy, James B. Ang, Per G. Fredriksson, Satyendra Kumar Gupta May 2020

Crop Yield And Democracy, James B. Ang, Per G. Fredriksson, Satyendra Kumar Gupta

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

How does the historical legacy of agriculture affect democratic traditions in contemporary societies? This paper provides empirical evidence that inherent crop yield and democracy exhibit an inverted U-shaped relationship. This finding is supported by cross-country data from up to 147 countries, 186 pre-colonial societies, and the U.S. states. The relationship thus exhibits a highly persistent pattern. Crop yield is measured by kilocalories per hectare per year under rain-fed conditions, which has the advantage of being highly exogenous. The hump-shaped relationship holds up to a battery of robustness tests.

Translational Genomics For Improving Sow Fertility, Hiruni R. Wijesena May 2020

Translational Genomics For Improving Sow Fertility, Hiruni R. Wijesena

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Sow fertility traits, such as litter size and number of lifetime parities produced (reproductive longevity), are economically important. Selection for these traits is difficult because they are lowly heritable, polygenic, sex-limited, and express late in life. Age at puberty is an early indicator of reproductive longevity. Gilts that achieve puberty at an early age have a greater probability to produce more parities over their lifetime. However, measuring age at puberty is time consuming and tedious. Identifying pleiotropic polymorphisms that affect age at puberty and other fertility traits, including reproductive longevity, could help to improve the accuracy of genomic prediction for …
