Developing An Interdisciplinary Team Checklist To Assess Readiness For Appropriate Medical Removal Of Central Venous Catheter (Cvc), Miranda Harper
Doctoral Projects
Healthcare-associated infections are not a new concept in health care. Many different health-care-associated infections have been established over the years including but not limited to healthcare-associated pneumonia, catheter-associated urinary tract infection, and central line-associated bacterial infection. While these infections are common in healthcare facilities, the rates of these infections are still prevalent in hospitals across the United States. This DNP project focused on central line-associated bacterial infections.
An interdisciplinary team checklist to assess readiness for appropriate medical removal of central venous catheter (CVC) was developed to assess intensive care unit patients for early appropriate medical CVC removal. The interdisciplinary team …
The Use Of Bacteriophages For Food Safety, Lorraine Endersen, Aidan Coffey
The Use Of Bacteriophages For Food Safety, Lorraine Endersen, Aidan Coffey
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
The search for natural biocontrol agents that allow the production of foods that are safe for human consumption and do not impact the taste, texture, and nutritional quality of the food, is a constant challenge for diverse food industries worldwide, particularly as the human population continues to rise globally, and multiple antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria is increasingly prevalent. Bacteriophages (phages), the naturally occurring predators of bacteria, are harmless to humans and animals and are ubiquitous in the environment — and as such, have been recognised as promising antimicrobial agents to help control specific bacterial pathogens in food production. This …

Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
Introduction: Digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) may decrease recall rates (RRs) and improve positive predictive values (PPVs) and cancer detection rates (CDRs) versus full-field digital mammography (FFDM). The value of DBT has not been assessed in New Mexico's rural and minority population. Objectives of this study were to compare RRs, CDRs, and PPVs using FFDM+DBT versus FFDM in screening mammograms at the University of New Mexico between 2013 and 2016 and to qualitatively evaluate patient decision-making regarding DBT. Materials and Methods: RRs, CDRs, and PPVs with 95% confidence intervals and relative risk were calculated from 35,147 mammograms. The association between relative …
Struggling Student Teachers: Interventions For Support And Success, Sheree Moser
Struggling Student Teachers: Interventions For Support And Success, Sheree Moser
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Teacher shortages in K-12 schools have created unique challenges for teacher preparation programs. University instructors face the task requirements of supporting candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate level. While some of these candidates enter higher education programs skilled, eager, and committed, others are less prepared, requiring significant attention to make it through the program. Exams required by state departments of education and minimum grade point averages influence each candidate’s ability to move forward within the program, causing some students to experience additional struggles related to mental health and financial burdens.
The problem of practice …
Developing A High-Value Pima Cotton Production System For South Carolina, Sarah Katherine Holladay
Developing A High-Value Pima Cotton Production System For South Carolina, Sarah Katherine Holladay
All Theses
With current production of Pima cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) in the United States being limited to the West, expanding cultivation into other parts of the country requires extensive research. Pima cotton is extra-long staple cotton with superior and more valuable fibers than the more broadly cultivated species, upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.). With Pima cotton production once existing in South Carolina prior to the 1930’s and boll weevil (Anthonmus grandis grandis Boh.) invasion, it was hypothesized in this study that it could be cultivated in the state once again. The objectives were (1) to identify pima genotypes in a two-year …

The Effect Of Cyanobacteria On Transgenerational Responses In Daphnia Pulicaria, Olivia Williams
The Effect Of Cyanobacteria On Transgenerational Responses In Daphnia Pulicaria, Olivia Williams
2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
'Transgenerational plasticity' occurs when environmental cues alter the expression of traits in offspring and future generations. This experiment examined the influence of low-quality cyanobacteria (Anabaena) on across-generation responses in a common water flea (Daphnia pulicaria) to quantify whether changes in food quality from dietary cyanobacteria can induce transgenerational effects. Three Daphnia clones from Lake Mendota (WI) were maintained at 14C, 16:10 photoperiod until the third laboratory generation; animals from each clonal line were then reared for multiple generations on diets that contained varying amounts of cyanobacteria (either 100% Scenedesmus or 70% Scenedesmus, 30% Anabaena). General linear models and a posthoc …

Variances Of Pro-Phenol Oxidases In The Melanin Synthesis Cascade Between Human And Cnidarian Species By Using Cassiopea Xamachana, Ivan Ponce
2020 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
With the rise of global temperatures, cnidarians are becoming more susceptible to disease within oceanic environments. Cnidarians rely on innate immunity through the melanin synthesis cascade using the pro-phenol oxidase (PPO) “tyrosinase” to combat pathogens. Although the function of vertebrae PPO immune response is well annotated, it is tragically used as a cascade model to understand cnidarian immunity. This study focuses on the relationship between cnidarian, utilizing Cassiopea xamachana, and human melanin synthesis cascades. Bioinformatic programs such as Composition Profiler, Mega-X, SWISS-MODEL, and PFAM were used to analyze these species’ tyrosinases. The data show there were major differences between the …

The Experience Of Friendship Between Individuals With And Without An Intellectual Disability., Rebecca Clark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Practitioners and researchers are concerned about the limited social inclusion and social networks of individuals with an Intellectual Disability (ID) (Amado, 2014; Bigby & Craig, 2017; Hall, 2010; Hardman & Clark, 2006; Knox & Hickson, 2001; McConkey & Collins, 2010; Tipton, 2011). Friendships between those with and without an ID are viewed as opportunities for greater inclusiveness with and connection to the mainstream society (Amado, 2014; Bigby & Craig, 2017; McConkey & Collins, 2010). However, little is known about the development of friendships between those with and without an ID. The purpose of this study was to fully explore the …
International Tourism As A Threat To Public Health In Thailand, Liam G. Lane
International Tourism As A Threat To Public Health In Thailand, Liam G. Lane
Binghamton University Undergraduate Journal
From its unique history, Thailand has embraced its independence and benefited from its cultural and natural beauty. Transitioning from an agricultural to industrial economy due to the emergence of a strong tourism industry, Thailand has experienced a period of intensive urbanization that has re-shaped Thai lifestyle. Materializing as regional and social disparities, these consequences of industrialization have seemingly divided Thai society, separating those who benefit from the tourism sector while marginalizing those who do not. Additionally, this transition has threatened public health statuses within Thailand, and considering the current tourism trends seen over the past 20 years there is a …

Syphilis Hepatitis Presenting As A Mimic Of Primary Biliary Cholangitis, Cody Kern, Ahmed Elmoursi, Caroline Blake, Andrew Hoellein
Internal Medicine Faculty Publications
Syphilis hepatitis is a rare cause of acute liver injury. Primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) is a progressive autoimmune disease characterized by the typical presentation of a cholestatic liver injury and the presence of antimitochondrial antibodies (AMAs). We present a case of syphilis hepatitis that presented as a mimic to PBC with positive AMA. The eradication of syphilis led to the resolution of the liver injury and down trending of the antibody level. We recommend excluding syphilis in patients with high-risk behaviors presenting with a cholestatic liver injury and positive AMA before the diagnosis of PBC.

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) is becoming an increasingly common disease with aging. As the prevalence of DM increases, the need for self-management is emphasized as a way to control DM and prevent its complications. According to the common-sense model, DM self-management is explained as an illness-related coping behavior that is affected by an individual's illness perception (IP). No studies were found that evaluated IP in Korean adults with DM in the United States, or that evaluated the association of health literacy (HL) with their IP and DM self-management. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between …

Genomic selection (GS) can improve genetic gain of complex traits in plant breeding. Phenotyping agronomic traits of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) for dualpurpose use is expensive and time-consuming. In this study, we compared the prediction accuracies of four GS models (RR-BLUP, GBLUP, GAUSS, and BL) for forage yield (FY), plant height (PH) and heading date (HD) of the hard winter wheat diversity panel (n = 298) using random and stratified sampling methods. In addition, we determined the appropriate training population (TP) size and marker density for GS of the traits. Moderate to high prediction accuracies ranging from 0.66 …
