Evaluating The Perceptions Of Preschool Teachers And Administrators On Mental Health Services In The School Setting, Celia Tavarez
Evaluating The Perceptions Of Preschool Teachers And Administrators On Mental Health Services In The School Setting, Celia Tavarez
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Mental health can impact a child’s success in many aspects, including in the school setting. School settings are very often the only place that provide an opportunity for families to be able to receive mental health services for their children. It is imperative that schools meet the mental health needs of the children who attend their schools. This research project examines data and information gathered from educators and school administrators to help us understand their experiences, successes, and/or displeasure about the services that are offered or not offered within the agency they work for. The literature review discusses the definition …
A Parenting Curriculum For Parents And Caregivers Of Young Children With A Focus On Attachment Theory, Alexandria Driscoll
A Parenting Curriculum For Parents And Caregivers Of Young Children With A Focus On Attachment Theory, Alexandria Driscoll
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Attachment science has shown the importance of a purposeful and secure parent-child relationship. A secure attachment relationship includes sensitivity, responsiveness, and warmth. However, these behaviors may not come naturally to some parents due to lack of knowledge, stress, mental health issues, and/or past relationships. The purpose of this project was to inform parents about attachment science, increase parents’ confidence, and reduce parental stress by providing four two-hour workshop sessions. This project specifically targeted parents of young children. During the implementation of the project, the platform of the sessions changed from face-to-face to online due to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent …

Population Health, East Africa
Why was the cohort set up?In many resource-constrained settings, availability of reli-able vital statistics and health information is limited bylack of proper system for civil registration and health infor-mation. This is further limited by the fact that the majorityof population health events, such as births, morbidity andmortality, occur outside the reach of these systems. In par-ticular, obtaining credible data from rural and remote ge-ographies can be even more constrained. The developmentof population-based surveillance systems in resource-constrained countries to monitor demographic and healthevents in these countries has as its basis the limited capac-ity of civil registration and health information systems.Locally rooted …

Cardiospecific Overexpression Of Atpgd1 (Carnosine Synthase) Increases Histidine Dipeptide Levels And Prevents Myocardial Ischemia Reperfusion Injury, Jingjing Zhao, Daniel J. Conklin, Yiru Guo, Xiang Zhang, Detlef Obal, Luping Guo, Ganapathy Jagatheesan, Kartik Katragadda, Liqing He, Jasmit Shah
Internal Medicine, East Africa
Background: Myocardial ischemia reperfusion (I/R) injury is associated with complex pathophysiological changes characterized by pH imbalance, the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products acrolein and 4-hydroxy trans-2-nonenal, and the depletion of ATP levels. Cardioprotective interventions, designed to address individual mediators of I/R injury, have shown limited efficacy. The recently identified enzyme ATPGD1 (Carnosine Synthase), which synthesizes histidyl dipeptides such as carnosine, has the potential to counteract multiple effectors of I/R injury by buffering intracellular pH and quenching lipid peroxidation products and may protect against I/R injury.
Methods and Results: We report here that β-alanine and carnosine feeding enhanced myocardial …

The objective of our study was to determine perceived barriers and assets related to nutrition education, food retail, and physical activity in 14 rural counties in Alabama where adult obesity rates are greater than 40%. Extension formed community coalitions in the counties to help identify community-specific needs and strategies related …
Overview Of A Statewide Extension Strategic Planning Process And Unintended Outcomes, Joseph L. Donaldson, Shirley Hastings
Overview Of A Statewide Extension Strategic Planning Process And Unintended Outcomes, Joseph L. Donaldson, Shirley Hastings
Journal of Extension
In 2010, University of Tennessee Extension conducted a strategic planning effort focused on the subsequent 10 years. The process involved approximately 3,000 Tennesseans in online surveys, area meetings, opinion polling, and focus group sessions. This article describes the process, tools, and outcomes—which included a comprehensive strategic plan. Yet the strategic planning process itself produced unintended outcomes, specifically professional development opportunities, greater awareness of Extension among state government stakeholders, and continuity in the pursuit of strategic goals despite administrative change. The major implication for Cooperative Extension organizations is that attention to the potential of these unintended outcomes can enhance strategic planning.

Integrating Emotional Intelligence Principles Into Extension Programming, Mia B. Russell, Shandi Andres, Carolyn Barnhart, Deb Andres
Journal of Extension
Emotional intelligence is a learned ability that can bridge emotions and decision making to help improve Extension program participant outcomes. Because decision making is not based on information and facts alone, emotional intelligence has the power to transform the way individuals think about, plan, and execute behavior changes as well as make informed decisions. We introduce and discuss the applicability of a five-step emotional intelligence framework for Extension programming as a means for integrating emotional intelligence into programs to enhance program participant decision making.

Cystic Fibrosis-Related Diabetes: The Unmet Need, Leonardo Pozo, Fatimah Bello, Yamely Mendez, Salim Surani
School of Medicine Publications
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a common autosomal recessive disease. Life expectancy of patients with CF continues to improve mainly driven by the evolving therapies for CF-related organ dysfunction. The prevalence of CF-related diabetes (CFRD) increases exponentially as patients’ age. Clinical care guidelines for CFRD from 2010, recommend insulin as the mainstay of treatment. Many patients with CFRD may not require exogenous insulin due to the heterogeneity of this clinical entity. Maintenance of euglycemia by enhancing endogenous insulin production, secretion and degradation with novel pharmacological therapies like glucagonlike peptide-1 agonist is an option that remains to be fully explored. As such, …

Journal of Extension
Low-income families experience many barriers to purchasing and preparing healthful foods. To help address some of these barriers, a team created a family-based cooking class, Healthy All Together, in which participants learn strategies for how to stretch their food dollars and feed their families healthful meals. In this article, we describe the development of Healthy All Together, report program impacts, and summarize program feedback from participants and instructors. Of particular importance is the idea that engaging children in cooking through a family-based class has the potential to help families consider how to use strategies to mitigate barriers to healthful cooking.

The Impact Of Racial Segregation On School Performance In Charter Schools, Billie Wright Berry
The Impact Of Racial Segregation On School Performance In Charter Schools, Billie Wright Berry
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Now in existence for over two decades, charter schools have become a divisive issue in American public education. Advocates contend that charters provide students and parents greater control of their education and promote innovation. School choice critics indicate that charter schools serve as a means for racial re-segregation and have led to an increase in racially homogeneous public schools. This quantitative study seeks to determine differences among the racial composition of charter schools and the racial composition of traditional public school systems in the same community to determine if charters have served as a means of “White flight” for students …
