Ramen And Peanut Butter: Food Insecurity At Lawrence University, Barbara Espinosa
Ramen And Peanut Butter: Food Insecurity At Lawrence University, Barbara Espinosa
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Food insecurity is a rapidly growing public health concern all over the world. Federal efforts to reduce food insecurity have shown themselves to be successful in providing lower income people with more access to food (Mabli and Ohls 2014), but they neglect some parts of the population, like college students (Davison and Morrel 2018). The prevalence of food insecurity among United States’ college students varies from 21% to 59% according to different studies, making the percentage of food insecure college students outstandingly larger than at the household level of 11% (Davison and Morrel 2018, Henry 2017). Most of the research investigating the ergogenic enhancing mechanisms of carbohydrate have been conducted using aerobic based exercise. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of pre-exercise maltodextrin ingestion on resistance exercise performance, serum insulin, epinephrine, glucose, and muscle glycogen concentrations. In a double blind, cross over, repeated measures design, participants completed four sets to failure at 70% of 1-RM with 45s rest on the angled leg press with or without pre-exercise maltodextrin (2g/kg) after a 3hr fast. Serum glucose, epinephrine, and insulin were assessed at baseline, 30 min post-ingestion, immediately after, and 1hr post-exercise with …

The excessive number of terms associated with invasive species, and their often incorrect usage, hinders stakeholder education about the threats of invasive species. Here we introduce seven terms (native, nonnative, introduced, established, invasive, nuisance, and range change) that are applicable across invasive taxa, understandable, typically interpreted correctly, and useful for describing most situations regarding invasive species. We also list six terms to avoid (native invasive, invasive exotic, invasive weed, alien, foreign, and nonindigenous) that create confusion via their misuse and misinterpretation. The terms we propose …

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome is a constellation of risk factors of metabolic origin that are accompanied by increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes. These risk factors are atherogenic dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, elevated plasma glucose, a prothrombotic state, and a proinflammatory state. The two major underlying the risk factors of metabolic syndrome are obesity and insulin resistance; exacerbating factors are physical inactivity, advancing age, and endocrine and genetics . The condition is progressive, beginning with borderline risk factors that eventually progress to categorical risk factors. In many patients, metabolic syndrome culminates in type II diabetes, which further …

Integrative Environmental Law: A Prescription For Law In The Time Of Climate Change, Alyson C. Flournoy
Duke Environmental Law & Policy Forum
As the magnitude of the threat posed by climate change has become increasingly apparent, scholars and practitioners have begun a dialogue about how to reform environmental law to meet the challenge. Concepts like adaptive management, sustainability, and resilience have emerged in succession, as policy makers and scholars search for new moorings for our ethical and legal framework. While useful, these concepts have failed to provide a vision, goal, or solid ethical grounding for environmental law in the era of climate change.
This project takes a new approach by exploring what we can learn from the field of Integrative Medicine. The …

The Effects Of Eating Disorders And Body Dissatisfaction On School Achievement, Briana Ribota
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
Eating disorders are no longer an invisible phenomenon. Eating disorders are caused by a multitude of factors which include a combination of biological, environmental abnormalities, and/or psychological, such as: nutritional deficiencies, sexual abuse, poor self-esteem, trauma, and/or social pressure (Strother et al., 2012). These food related issues can cause embarrassment and pain, along with severely jeopardizing one’s health if not recognized and treated (Strother et al., 2012). As a result of the complexities of eating disorders, young adults are annihilated with managing life impediments rather than focusing on academic achievement. A qualitative post positivist study will be conducted by interviewing …

Objectives: To assess bone mineral density (BMD) of children with short stature using quantitative ultrasound (QUS) and compare it to children with normal height. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, cross-sectional controlled study between May 2018 and February 2019 at various pediatric clinics in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. In total, 219 children were included: 100 had short stature, and 119 were of normal height. Data were collected from one-on-one interviews, and BMD was measured using quantitative ultrasound. Results: Children with short stature had significantly lower BMD z-scores than children with normal height ( p <0.05). The use of vitamin D supplements was related to higher BMD z-scores in children with short stature (p<0.05). A significant association was found between higher BMD z-scores, and both age ( p =0.05) and height ( p =0.02). Through a further division of children with short stature into those with and those without growth hormone deficiencies, we show that growth hormone deficiency was positively associated with lower BMD z-scores; however, the p -value was 0.06. Conclusions: Compared with children of normal height, those with short stature had lower BMD. Height, vitamin D supplementation, and age were all significantly correlated with higher BMD, while growth hormone deficiency was correlated with lower BMD.

Meat is an important food for human consumption. Its consumption is associated with economic development, so that the more meat consumed, the higher the level of quality of life or index of wealth attributed to a population. This consideration has led, during the second half of the 20th century, to a greater consumption of meat. To prepare different dishes requires an adequate knowledge of cutting meat, so ignoring this aspect would be contradictory with gastronomy. In Ecuador, and particularly in the Patate canton, there is a lack of knowledge about the types of cuts that can be made with meat, …

School of Business
This paper studies supply-side health interventions, which increased the monetary incentives and number of health professionals in the Deep South provinces of Thailand, and provides evidence on the effectiveness of provision of primary care providers on the health care utilization of the community. We use a difference-in-differences approach to estimate effects of this policy on child health by evaluating the probability of immunizations in the policy affected areas using two rounds of the Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS). We find that after the policy implementation, there is a decrease in immunizations that are given to children within 2 months and …

"Pacing" Ourselves: Saving Medicaid Through Programs Of All-Inclusive Care For The Elderly, Megan Ingram-French
Penn State Law Review (2003 - Present)
The baby boomer generation is aging, and those in the boomer generation will soon pose an unparalleled burden on government-subsidized health care systems like Medicaid. To sustain this impending burden, these systems must undergo significant reform. Most elderly individuals require long-term care at some point in their lives. Today, many baby boomers are providing this care to their elderly parents, and this practice has kept most of the elderly in need of care at home and out of long-term care facilities. As the baby boomers age, though, they will have fewer family members available to care for them and will …

Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is characterized by diffuse villous atrophy of the small bowel. EED is strongly associated with stunting, a major public health problem linked to increased childhood morbidity and mortality. EED and subsequent stunting of linear growth are surmised to have microbial origins. To interrogate this relationship, we defined the comprehensive virome (eukaryotic virus and bacteriophage) and bacterial microbiome of a longitudinal cohort of rural Malawian children with extensive metadata and intestinal permeability testing at each time point. We found thirty bacterial taxa differentially associated with linear growth. We detected many eukaryotic viruses. Neither the total number of …
