The Anti-Diabetic Potential Of The African Adansonia Digitata L. Plant Extract, Marwa Tawfik Badawy
The Anti-Diabetic Potential Of The African Adansonia Digitata L. Plant Extract, Marwa Tawfik Badawy
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a severe chronic disease affecting a large population worldwide. The Middle Eastern region has been gifted with lots of native medicinal plants. However, there is less information on development of these medicinal plants into nutraceuticals for modulating specific diseases such as diabetes of common occurrence regionally. Towards this end, there is a crucial need to investigate other types of treatments to modulate diabetes. This study is conducted to fill in this gap by investigating medicinal plant used as folk medicine, which is Baobab (Adansonia digitata L.). This study is performed in two phases: in-vitro and in-vivo. …

Older adults, also known as the silver generation, are the new healthy generation. This generation has for many decades formed the basis for the prosperity found in Norway. The ageing population is growing rapidly in many countries around the world. The aim of this paper is to understand healthy active older adults’ interpretations of food and meals and their focus on food and future living. Nine CurroCus® group interviews, or fast focus groups, were conducted, lasting 37 to 56 minutes with an average of 45 minutes. Altogether, 76 persons from both genders participated, with an age span of 60 to …

The solubility of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the moisture and protein components of cheese matrices and the influence of changing pH, salt and temperature levels remains unclear. In this study, model casein matrices were prepared, by renneting of micellar casein concentrate (MCC), with modulation of salt and pH levels by adding salt and glucono delta-lactone, respectively, to the MCC solutions prior to renneting. Different moisture-to-protein levels were achieved by freeze-drying, incubation of samples at different relative humidities, or by applying varying pressures during gel manufacture. The CO2 solubility of samples decreased linearly with both increasing temperature and salt-in-moisture content, whereas …

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy. The impact of pregnancy complications on placental function suggests that extraembryonic stem cells in the placenta may also be affected during pregnancy. Neonatal tissue-derived stem cells, with the advantages of their differentiation capacity and non-invasive isolation processes, have been proposed as a promising therapeutic avenue for GDM management through potential cell therapy approaches. However, the influence of GDM on autologous stem cells remains unclear. Thus, studies that provide comprehensive understanding of stem cells isolated from women with GDM are essential to guide future clinical applications.
METHODS: Human chorionic membrane-derived stem …

Slow-darkening (SD) pinto beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) possess a desirable new trait, conditioned by the recessive sd gene, that slows seed coat darkening under delayed harvest and under storage. The effect sd may have on performance needs investigation. We examined agronomic performance and cooking quality of SD pinto beans. There were 30 (15 SD and 15 regular darkening [RD]) recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from each of two biparental inbred populations. The 60 RILs were tested across three locations in North Dakota andWashington. In addition, advanced SD and RD pinto breeding lines were tested in trials from 2010 to 2012 and …

Background: Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO), a choline-derived gut microbiota-dependent metabolite, is a newly recognized risk marker for cardiovascular disease. We sought to determine: (1) TMAO response to meals containing free versus lipid-soluble choline and (2) effects of gut microbiome on TMAO response. Methods: In a randomized, controlled, double-blinded, crossover study, healthy men (n = 37) were provided meals containing 600 mg choline either as choline bitartrate or phosphatidylcholine, or no choline control. Results: Choline bitartrate yielded three-times greater plasma TMAO AUC (p = 0.01) and 2.5-times greater urinary TMAO change from baseline (p = 0.01) compared to no choline and phosphatidylcholine. Gut …

The Impact Of Spending Time Alone On Emerging Adults' Mental Well-Being, Lisa Prescott Dixon
Family Perspectives
Purposefully spending time alone with the intention of self-care can lead to mental health benefits for emerging adults. However, when the motivation for spending time alone is rooted in the desire to be socially avoidant, emerging adults may find themselves becoming isolated and may experience increased levels of anxiety and/or depression. Effective solitude excludes any other individuals and the use of social media. As emerging adults purposefully spend time alone, they are creating opportunities for self-reflection that may then lead to the strengthened development of emotional regulation skills. The ability to emotionally regulate provides the necessary tools to cope with …

Impacts Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Black Americans With Diabetes, Ted Studt
Biology Summer Fellows
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted all Americans in varying ways, but it has hit the American Black population particularly hard. It also impacts immunocompromised individuals, especially those with conditions that involve damage to or hindering of the cardiovascular or respiratory systems. I found myself asking several questions – how much did this affect individuals who suffer from such conditions, especially those who are Black Americans; how much does systemic racism play in the current pandemic; what could be done about all this; and so on. Since I myself have lived with type I diabetes for almost two decades at the …

Using High Leverage Practices To Support Early Childhood Special Education Students And Families During Distance Learning, Anna Branham
Dissertations, Theses, and Projects
In the late winter of 2020, the introduction of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) also introduced families and educators across the nation to the concept of distance learning. While some had already chosen distance learning as the best option for their child, this was the first time in history that it was the sole option for the delivery of instruction. As districts and teachers began to prepare, there were many uncertainties for what distance learning would look like. This was especially true for our youngest learners that were receiving special education services.
While High Leverage Practices (HLPs) in Special Education were …

Assessment Of Dehydration As A Commercial-Scale Food Waste Valorization Strategy, Jon T. Schroeder, Ava L. Labuzetta, Thomas A. Trabold
Articles
Using a commercially available dehydration unit, this study aimed to valorize various food waste streams from different sources in the Rochester, New York area. Dehydration of the food waste collected for the study helped reduce the weight of the feedstock by 70–90%, as the incoming waste streams were relatively wet. The output was materially characterized against end uses such as cattle feed, fish feed, and compost. The results demonstrated that, other than fertilizer, the remaining five end uses (compost, fish feed, cattle feed, pyrolysis, and pelletized fuel) were potentially compatible with varying waste feedstocks based on the parameters analyzed. Fish …

Health Is Wealth: The Correlation Of Wellness Programs & Productivity In Canada And The U.S., Madeline Wert
Business and Economics Summer Fellows
Does health impact the productivity of workers? Are there differences between the U.S. and Canada? Firms both in Canada and the U.S. deal with issues of presenteeism and absenteeism. Presenteeism is when an employee shows up to work but they are distracted by their own or a family member’s health issue. One response to reduce presenteeism and absenteeism are workplace wellness programs. Workplace wellness programs are facilitated programs by a firm to promote the health and wellbeing of their employees, which benefits the employer and the employees. There are additional incentives for U.S. employers to implement workplace wellness programs as …

Obesity is commonly known to affect 27% of adults in the United States (Wadden et al., 2002). The medical condition is the result of not eating healthy, little to no exercise, genetics, medication and other factors (Cava et al., 2017). If adults that are obese do not treat the medical condition then there will be long term problems such as diabetes and cancer (Cava et al., 2017). “ In Seattle, a study of critically sick COVID-19 patients made comparative discoveries. This examination found that 85% of patients with obesity required mechanical ventilation, compared to 64% of patients without the condition. …

As stay-at-home orders sweep across the United States, not everyone can adhere. People affected by homelessness struggle to find a place to remain healthy and invulnerable to a rising pandemic. The District of Columbia’s homeless population rises to 6,500 people and poses the most risk for COVID-19 because of the lack of resources available in the city, preexisting health conditions, and substance dependency. Some homeless people with a respiratory condition face a greater likelihood of developing a severe reaction from COVID-19 (Vredevoe, 1992). Furthermore, the homeless population tends to face a mortality rate from five to ten times higher than …

Background: Medical screening detects risk factors for disease or presence of disease in otherwise well persons in order to intervene early and reduce morbidity and mortality. During antenatal care (ANC) it is important to detect conditions that complicate pregnancy, like gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Despite international and local guidelines recommending screening for GDM during ANC, there is evidence to suggest that the practice was not being carried out adequately. A major challenge may be lack of consensus on uniform GDM screening and diagnostic guidelines internationally and locally.
The primary objective was to determine the magnitude of screening for GDM among …

Background: Although native to North America, the invasion of the aphid-like grape phylloxera Daktulosphaira vitifoliae across the globe altered the course of grape cultivation. For the past 150 years, viticulture relied on grafting-resistant North American Vitis species as rootstocks, thereby limiting genetic stocks tolerant to other stressors such as pathogens and climate change. Limited understanding of the insect genetics resulted in successive outbreaks across the globe when rootstocks failed. Here we report the 294-Mb genome of D. vitifoliae as a basic tool to understand host plant manipulation, nutritional endosymbiosis, and enhance global viticulture. Results: Using a combination of genome, RNA, …

BACKGROUND: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is an enigmatic disorder of the small intestine that is postulated to play a role in childhood undernutrition, a pressing global health problem. Defining the incidence of this disorder, its pathophysiological features, and its contribution to impaired linear and ponderal growth has been hampered by the difficulty in directly sampling the small intestinal mucosa and microbial community (microbiota).
METHODS: In this study, among 110 young children (mean age, 18 months) with linear growth stunting who were living in an urban slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and had not benefited from a nutritional intervention, we performed endoscopy …

Hypocalcemia is a known risk following bariatric surgery and can contribute to the development of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is commonly treated with denosumab, though denosumab can exacerbate underlying abnormalities in calcium homeostasis. We present the case of a 59-year-old female with severe hypocalcemia who had been treated with denosumab for osteoporosis three months before and had Billroth II gastric bypass surgery 15 years before, for bariatric purposes. Intravenous calcium supplementation was used to correct the initial electrolyte abnormality, and the patient was able to maintain appropriate calcium levels on high doses of oral calcium before discharge. Denosumab-induced hypocalcemia has been previously …

The mode of acquisition and causes for the variable clinical spectrum of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remain unknown. We utilized a reverse genetics system to generate a GFP reporter virus to explore severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pathogenesis and a luciferase reporter virus to demonstrate sera collected from SARS and COVID-19 patients exhibited limited cross-CoV neutralization. High-sensitivity RNA in situ mapping revealed the highest angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) expression in the nose with decreasing expression throughout the lower respiratory tract, paralleled by a striking gradient of SARS-CoV-2 infection in proximal (high) versus distal (low) pulmonary epithelial cultures. The Role Of Plasticity In Bumble Bee Responses To Environmental Variability, Matthew Austin
The Role Of Plasticity In Bumble Bee Responses To Environmental Variability, Matthew Austin
Dissertations
An aim of contemporary biology is elucidating the causes and consequences of phenotypic plasticity. Here, I approach this aim by exploring the eco-evolutionary dynamics of phenotypic plasticity and environmental variability in bumble bees (Apidae: Bombus), a congeneric clade of eusocial pollinating insects. Throughout their evolution, bumble bees have encountered spatiotemporal variability imposed by dynamic floral environments. Today, bumble bees additionally encounter spatiotemporal variability imposed by anthropogenic environmental change. In this dissertation, I explore how phenotypic plasticity affects how successfully bumble bees respond to environmental variability imposed by anthropogenic global change (Chapters 1 and 2) and their floral resources (Chapters …
