Grain and Other Field Crops Research Articles
Previous research has not considered the effect of high amylose wheat noodles on postprandial glycaemia. The aim of the study is to investigate the effect of consumption of high amylose noodles on postprandial glycaemia over 2-h periods by monitoring changes in blood glucose concentration and calculating the total area under the blood glucose concentration curve. Twelve healthy young adults were recruited to a repeated measure randomised, single-blinded crossover trial to compare the effect of consuming noodles (180 g) containing 15%, 20% and 45% amylose on postprandial glycaemia. Fasting blood glucose concentrations were taken via finger-prick blood samples. Postprandial blood glucose …

Fox Dietary Ecology As A Tracer Of Human Impact On Pleistocene Ecosystems, Chris Baumann, Hervé Bocherens, Dorothée G. Drucker, Nicholas J. Conrad

Nowadays, opportunistic small predators, such as foxes (Vulpes vulpes and Vulpes lagopus), are well known to be very adaptable to human modified ecosystems. However, the timing of the start of this phenomenon in terms of human impact on ecosystems and of the implications for foxes has hardly been studied. We hypothesize that foxes can be used as an indicator of past human impact on ecosystems, as a reflection of population densities and consequently to track back the influence of humans on the Pleistocene environment. To test this hypothesis, we used stable isotope analysis (δ13C, δ15N) …

Assessing Community Needs: City Of Toledo And Lucas County, Ohio, Jim Robey, Stephen Biddle, Don Edgerly, Marie Holler, Brian Pittelko, Claudette Robey, Kathleen Bolter, Tom Schorgl
Reports
At the core of issues in Lucas County and, in particular, the City of Toledo is poverty. While this does not necessarily provide an “Aha!” moment, current conditions that contribute to being economically disadvantaged in many areas of the city and county affect not only current residents but will also affect future residents—without meaningful and targeted interventions. It is beyond the scope of the Toledo Community Foundation, or any single institution for that matter, to unilaterally address the range of issues presented in this study. Remedying these issues must be accomplished through the coordination and leveraging of resources, including public, …

Parental Impact On Child Physical Activity And Sedentary Time In Appalachian North Carolina, Allison V. Farrell, Richard W. Christiana, Rebecca A. Battista, J. Joy James
Journal of Appalachian Health
Introduction: Physical activity has positive health benefits across the lifespan including reduced rates of chronic disease. Despite having ample availability of outdoor space for physical activity in the Appalachian Mountain region, there are low rates of physical activity along with high rates of sedentary time and increased prevalence of overweight individuals across all age groups. Therefore, there is a need to understand the factors that influence family’s physical activity and sedentary time.
Purpose: To assess whether parental attitudes and behaviors influence children’s physical activity and sedentary time.
Methods: The current study was a secondary analysis of the baseline data from …

Effects Of Intermittent Fasting And Physical Activity On Salivary Expression Of Reduced Glutathione And Interleukin-1b, Colton Allen, Brandon Sellers, Mackinzie Smith, Alyssa Edwards, Kirsten Gateless, Bailey Aab, Kalee Sherrard, Carl Bolyard, Shawn Stover
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 13(7): 1063-1071, 2020. Previous research has consistently demonstrated that regular exercise promotes antioxidant production and decreases the expression of inflammation markers. However, there is very little research examining the effects of intermittent fasting (IF) on oxidative stress and inflammation. The present study investigated the hypothesis that a combination of IF and physical activity will reduce the need for glutathione (GSH) production by decreasing oxidative stress. In addition, it was hypothesized that a combination of IF and physical activity will significantly reduce inflammation, as indicated by a decrease in interleukin-1b (IL-1b) concentration. For three months, subjects …
The Impact Of Temporal Resolution On Clinical Decision-Making For Individuals With Dysphagia, Shauna Corinne Murray
The Impact Of Temporal Resolution On Clinical Decision-Making For Individuals With Dysphagia, Shauna Corinne Murray
Speech and Hearing Sciences ETDs
INTRODUCTION: Dysphagia, or a disordered swallow, affects up to 1 in 25 individuals in the United States. The gold standard for assessing dysphagia is the videofluoroscopic evaluation of swallowing (VFES). This allows the clinician to observe the swallow anatomy in motion via an X-ray movie, which historically was recorded at 30 frames per second. In recent years VFES have been performed at less frames per second due to radiation concern. This project investigates the effect of using lower temporal resolutions on assessment of video-fluoroscopic swallow studies.
METHODS: In this investigation, 30 swallow studies, all acquired at 30 frames per second, …

Body Composition Components Are Related To Vertical Jump Kinetics In Elite American Football Players, Elizabeth Haizlip, Monique Mokha, Lia Jiannine, Pete Bommarito
ISBS Proceedings Archive
American football players vary in body composition across player positions. Components of body composition may affect jumping performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between lean body mass, fat mass, total body mass, vertical jump (VJ) height, VJ reactive strength, and VJ kinetic asymmetry. 39 players had their body composition assessed using a BOD POD and VJ kinetics via a force plate. Pearson correlation coefficients quantified relationships between the variables, allpha =.05. VJ height and reactive strength were highly and very highly negatively associated with lean body mass, fat mass, and total body mass, p

Using Shin Length To Determine Kick Plate Position Optimizes Select Swim Start Mechanics In Elite Swimmers, Angela Cicenia Achurra, Caroline Oster, G. Mokha
ISBS Proceedings Archive
The track start kick plate position is often decided by the level of comfort of the swimmer. The purpose of this study was to use shin length as a measure to determine kick plate position and effects on performance. 20 elite swimmers performed 3 starts at 3 kick plate distances (< shin length, shin length, and > shin length). Differences in reaction time, block phase time (BT), flight phase time, flight distance, underwater phase time, time to the 15 m mark, knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion angles were examined between the positions. BT was significantly different, (F(2,38)=4.264, p=.026). BT was lower when the …

Squats Performed On An Unstable Surface Elicit Higher Transversal Force Output Compared To More Stable Squats, Nils Eckardt, David G. Behm, Armin Weers, Jörg Schorer
ISBS Proceedings Archive
Instability resistance training (RT) or exercising within an unstable environment is a popular training modality and frequently used in training, rehabilitation and prevention settings. Yet, due to the reported reduced force output during exercising within unstable condition, instability RT is said to lack the necessary overload to induce meaningful effects. However, empirical evidence of interventions suggests otherwise. The aim of this study was to systematically analyse instability RT vs. stable RT and discuss potential mechanisms. Therefore, we analysed squats within unstable and stable environments and calculated transversal and vertical forces. Greater transversal plane ground reaction forces were observed while performing …
