Racial Justice And The Image Of Public Health, Marilyn Fischer
Racial Justice And The Image Of Public Health, Marilyn Fischer

The City Commission in my hometown of Dayton, Ohio recently adopted a resolution declaring racism a public health crisis. In doing so, Dayton joins municipalities around the country, as the global pandemic of coronavirus COVID19 swirls around us. The Commission gave compelling reasons for their action, citing the disparate rates of poor health outcomes in African American communities, as well as disproportionately high rates of poverty, unemployment, economic distress, homelessness, incarceration, and inadequate education.1 The Commission’s commitment to remedy these inequities is welcome. Others have laid out this evidence in much detail; I want to focus here on public health …

Hesed: Engaging New Generations For Earthkeeping, Keith Ham
Doctor of Ministry
Within the Christian community, a critical gap of failing to address the degradation of the planet in a meaningful way has led to impoverished views theologically and in praxis and experience. In the context of earth care, independent African churches acquiesce her role and responsibility to conserve the land and conceive of new ways to envision creation care because of her models of prosperity theology and a millennium future. By intensifying a trust in God and allowing his covenantal love for and with creation the coherence of the Christian story is not compromised. Research in the metaphors of trusteeship and …

Looking At Catholic Schools’ Responses To The Covid-19 Pandemic Through The Lens Of Catholic Social Teaching Principles, Audrey A. Friedman, Myra Rosen-Reynoso, Charles T. Cownie Iii, Cristina J. Hunter Phd
COVID-19 and Catholic Schools
The current COVID-19 crisis has significantly impacted all teachers throughout the country, in particular, those teaching in urban schools. The urgent nature of this crisis has brought new challenges to urban Catholic school educators specifically, and their ability to enact and model Catholic Social Teachings which include; respect for the life and dignity of the human person, the call to care for family and community, solidarity in uniting the human community, the dignity of work and the rights of workers, providing persons with rights that ensure decent lives such as an education, preferential option for the poor, and care for …

Effects Of Using Hemp Hearts As A Feed Additive In Broiler Chicks, Brian Parr, Cheyenne Hooks, Mallorie Snider, Huichang Chae, Tony Brannon
Journal of Agricultural Hemp Research
In this experiment, hemp hearts of differing percentages were fed to broiler chicks for 49 days. The experiment, which was initiated to identify the potential of hemp hearts as a feed source, consisted of four experimental groups and one control group. Each experimental group received a diet containing: 10%, 20%, 30% and 40% hemp hearts; the control group did not contain hemp hearts, but contained soybean meal. As a result, broilers fed a diet containing 20% hemp hearts gained the most weight, t(16) = 2.12, p < 0.05 and feed conversion was also the lowest t(18) = 2.10, p < 0.01. These results indicate the feed efficiency of broilers using 20% hemp hearts was the lowest numerically, but the most efficient qualitatively. The diets consisting of higher percentages of hemp hearts demonstrate a need for additional supplementation.
The “End Of Poverty” Illusion: Global And East Asian Realities In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mel Gurtov
The “End Of Poverty” Illusion: Global And East Asian Realities In The Covid-19 Pandemic, Mel Gurtov
Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
The World Bank’s “International Poverty Line,” a politically driven standard, obscures the reality that, in East Asia as elsewhere, poverty is increasing alongside enormous wealth for the richest ten percent. The COVID-19 pandemic is driving tens of millions more people into poverty in East Asia than would otherwise be the case, challenging all governments to meet the crisis where it most counts: in health care, food, aid to small businesses, and income. For that to happen , however, requires a dramatically different approach to economic globalization by governments and international lending agencies. Two events, the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate …

Neonatal Lead (Pb) Exposure And Dna Methylation Profiles In Dried Bloodspots, Luke Montrose
Public and Population Health Faculty Publications and Presentations
Lead (Pb) exposure remains a major concern in the United States (US) and around the world, even following the removal of Pb from gasoline and other products. Environmental Pb exposures from aging infrastructure and housing stock are of particular concern to pregnant women, children, and other vulnerable populations. Exposures during sensitive periods of development are known to influence epigenetic modifications which are thought to be one mechanism of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) paradigm. To gain insights into early life Pb exposure-induced health risks, we leveraged neonatal dried bloodspots in a cohort of children from Michigan, US …

Remote Assessment Of Functional Mobility And Strength In Older Cancer Survivors: Protocol For A Validity And Reliability Study, Cindy K. Blair, Elizabeth Harding, Carla Herman, Tawny Boyce, Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, Sally M. Davis, Anita Y. Kinney, Vernon S. Pankratz
Pediatrics Research and Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Older cancer survivors, faced with both age- and treatment-related morbidity, are at increased and premature risk for physical function limitations. Physical performance is an important predictor of disability, quality of life, and premature mortality, and thus is considered an important target of interventions designed to prevent, delay, or attenuate the physical functional decline. Currently, low-cost, valid, and reliable methods to remotely assess physical performance tests that are self-administered by older adults in the home-setting do not exist, thus limiting the reach, scalability, and dissemination of interventions.
OBJECTIVE: This paper will describe the rationale and design for a study to …

Africa’s development challenges include how to increase agricultural productivity, move beyond resource extraction and farm-based enterprises towards higher value enterprises, reduce environmental degradation, achieve food and nutrition security, and tackle the triple disease burden (non-communicable, communicable, and reproductive health related). Advances in applied science, engineering, and technology (ASET) fields are essential to finding effective solutions to these complex development problems and will require harnessing Africa’s human resources, both women and men (Okeke et al., 2017; Tiedeu, 2019).1 Unfortunately, only a fraction of women’s potential contributions is …

Developing A Messaging Graphic For Storage Times Of Refrigerated Ready To Eat (Rte) Foods For A Consumer Food Safety Health Campaign, Delores Chambers, Edgar Chambers, Sandria Godwin, Alisa Doan, Sheryl Cates
Human Sciences Faculty Research
This study developed and evaluated risk communication messages for ready to eat (RTE) foods targeted towards consumer storage practices in a food safety health campaign. Concepts were determined from a fractional factorial design of five categories of attributes potentially present in health promotion: title, message, graphic, slogan, and icon. Consumers viewed a subset of concepts and scored how useful the concept was in remembering to throw away RTE foods that were stored too long. Regression analysis determined which combinations of message attributes were most likely to result in using the information to throw out foods, which could help prevent foodborne …

Background: Over the last century, there has been a remarkable development in the study of bone and soft tissue sarcomas. This is primarily due to the improved knowledge of the nature of these lesions and the improved imaging technology. In literature there are many protocols that are being used and all of them have reported various advantages and disadvantages of each technique used. However, there is no set guideline and whatever has been proposed has been developed on the basis of the experience of different centres and different surgeons.
Objective: The current systematic review was planned to thoroughly evaluate the …

Impact Of Lysine On Mouse Reproductive Behavior, Wren Dieterman, Corissa Kern, Mark Garbrecht
Student Research and Creative Projects 2020-2021
Lysine, an essential amino acid, has a large effect on growth in mammals. C57BL/6 mice were measured on different variables throughout their entire life; starting at the juvenile stage, followed by pregnancy, and as newborns. Weight gain/loss, food consumption, and pup weight gain, activity, color and hair growth were completed with the mice in a low lysine group, which had 4 g/kg of lysine in their diet, and with mice in the control group, which had 14 g/kg of lysine in their diet. During pregnancy, observations were made on weight gain, as well as on food consumption. The results revealed …

The Quest For Greener Pastures: Evaluating The Livelihoods Impacts Of Providing Vegetation Condition Maps To Pastoralists In Eastern Africa, Elia Machado, Helene Purcell, Andrew M. Simons, Stephanie Swinehart
Publications and Research
The survival of millions of pastoral households in Eastern Africa has become increasingly at risk. Due to mounting socioeconomic and climatic stressors, pastoral households are faced with making migration decisions under increasing uncertainty about resource availability and limited coping strategies. We assess the potential of providing vegetation condition maps to support the migration decision of pastoralists in Ethiopia and Tanzania and the effect of map usage on their herd condition and size. The maps were generated from remotely sensed data using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as a proxy for vegetation condition and overlain with pastoralists’ preferred grazing areas. …
A Delicate Balance: Limiting Consolidation In Agricultural Seed Markets Without Stifling Innovation, Justin Brickey
A Delicate Balance: Limiting Consolidation In Agricultural Seed Markets Without Stifling Innovation, Justin Brickey
The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review
Agricultural seed markets have experienced significant consolidation over the past fifty years, apparently driven by private investment in research and development (“R&D”) made profitable through extensive intellectual property protections. The current intellectual property law regime on plants allows an innovator to obtain a wide variety of protections on new plant varieties, whether created through natural breeding processes or genetic engineering. Investment has paid off and the United States has experienced significant benefits through increased productivity, meaning we produce significantly more food today without using more land than our grandparents. However, agricultural markets deserve, and are often given, unique consideration because …

HIV and AIDS
Zambia’s HIV prevalence is estimated at 11% among adults aged 15–49 years and 1% among children younger than 15 years. An estimated 10% of Zambia’s population is at high risk of being orphaned or vulnerable due to the HIV epidemic. The Zambia Family (ZAMFAM) project aims to improve the care and resilience of vulnerable populations while supporting HIV epidemic control. ZAMFAM used a case management approach that tracks beneficiaries from identification to graduation. The Population Council conducted a qualitative case study to understand actors and perceptions, and document best practices. Program beneficiaries viewed the ZAMFAM program as having made a …

Most humans are in contact with animals in a way or another. A zoonotic disease is a disease or infection that can be transmitted naturally from vertebrate animals to humans or from humans to vertebrate animals. More than 60% of human pathogens are zoonotic in origin. This includes a wide variety of bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa, parasites, and other pathogens. Factors such as climate change, urbanization, animal migration and trade, travel and tourism, vector biology, anthropogenic factors, and natural factors have greatly influenced the emergence, re-emergence, distribution, and patterns of zoonoses. As time goes on, there are more emerging and …
