Arthropod pests and vectors constrain the livelihood opportunities of people in Africa by debilitating production of crops and livestock and through transmission of vector-borne diseases. In the absence of effective alternative management options to tackle these pests and vectors, there is extensive dependence on synthetic pesticides for their management on crop and livestock systems, with significant negative impacts on animal and human health, and the environment. Biopesticides are effective and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. At the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe), the Arthropod Pathology Unit (APU) was established for effective biopesticide research-for-development (R4D), underpinned by …

The Effects Of Meditation In College Students, Katherine Shelton
Student Theses and Dissertations
Research has been conducted on young student age groups (ages 13-18) and the effects that meditation elicits on anxiety, stress and academic performance, but that is where the age is capped (Beauchemin, Hutchins, & Patterson, 2008). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of meditation on a previously understudied age category: undergraduate college students ages 18-22. All participants had their age, gender, height, weight, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and resting heart rate measured before and after the study, and completed a 19-Item Body-Image Questionnaire (Koleck, Brunchon-Schweitzer, Cousson-Gélie, Gilliard, & Quintard, 2002). Okoubaka aubrevillei is an indigenous and sacred tropical tree in Africa. It is rare with allelopathic properties and has relatively little information available in terms of what is responsible for its usage for medicinal and traditional usage. The phytochemical screening and quantitative analysis of the compounds in the barks and leaves of Okoubaka aubrevillei was determined to ascertain and establish its earlier claimed usage as traditional and modern medicine. The most important classes of secondary metabolites (phytochemical compounds) specifically alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, anthraquinnes, mucilages, oses, holosides, coumarin and glycosides were detected in both, the leaves and barks of the …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common male cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in United States men. Controversy continues over the effectiveness of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) for distinguishing aggressive from indolent PCa. There is a critical need for more specific and sensitive biomarkers to detect and distinguish low-versus high-risk PCa cases. Discovery metabolomics were performed utilizing ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) on plasma samples from 159 men with treatment naïve prostate cancer participating in the North Carolina-Louisiana PCa Project to determine if there were metabolites associated with aggressive PCa. Thirty-five identifiable plasma small molecules were …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
High nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in bread wheat is pivotal to sustain high productivity. Knowledge about the physiological and transcriptomic changes that regulate NUE, in particular how plants cope with nitrogen (N) stress during flowering and the grain filling period, is crucial in achieving high NUE. Nitrogen response is differentially manifested in different tissues and shows significant genetic variability. A comparative transcriptome study was carried out using RNA-seq analysis to investigate the effect of nitrogen levels on gene expression at 0 days post anthesis (0 DPA) and 10 DPA in second leaf and grain tissues of three Australian wheat (Triticum …

Elderly Offender Prison Programming In The People's Republic Of China And The United States
Contemporary Southern Psychology
Throughout the world, there has been a significant increase in the proportion of people who are classified as elderly. The reasons for this are the increased modernization of many nations due to the impact of globalization on transportation, communications, food production, and medical services. As a result of these improvements in the average quality-of-life, people are living longer. The same growth of elderly persons has been seen within prison systems around the world, as well. This article examines the impact of the graying of society in the People’s Republic of China and the United States, in general, and the correctional …

Recent advancements in medical genetics and molecular biology are reflected in the modern understanding and approach to colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Understanding the cellular mechanisms and mutational patterns that promote carcinogenesis could enhance the predictive accuracy of the TNM classification. Furthermore, this will allow for a much more documented stratification and tailored oncological treatment. This paper presents an illustrative case of a relatively young patient (50 years old) with no family history of cancer who was diagnosed with four synchronous gastrointestinal (GI) adenocarcinomas displaying a wild type P53, negative BRAF testing, and mutated MLH1 and PMS2 proteins. This case report contributes …

Oral manifestations are present both in Cushing's syndrome and in adrenal insufficiency. Possible oro-dental pathology in patients with Cushing's syndrome include jawbone loss, tooth loss, and periodontal diseases. Professional societies did not include Cushing's syndrome as being part of systemic diseases associated with loss of periodontal supporting tissues. The comorbidities of Cushing's syndrome such as obesity, osteoporosis, and diabetes are conditions that influence periodontal attachment apparatus. In patients with adrenal primary insufficiency, the most specific sign is the melanic pigmentation of the skin and mucosal surfaces due to increments of corticotropin and pro-opiomelanocortin peptide levels that occur as a result …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) are progressive disorders, and major health concerns among today’s aging population. COPD causes a large mucus buildup in the lungs, leading to chronic cough and difficulty to breathe. CHF causes fluid buildup in the lower lungs due to the failing heart, causing cough and difficulty to breath. People who are clinically diagnosed with COPD or CHF are expected to regularly monitor their symptoms and follow complex medical recommendations in an effort to prevent exacerbation. In this dissertation, we elaborate upon three different machine learning based techniques that we developed for …

Background: A major challenge in implementing personalized medicine in pediatrics is identifying appropriate drug dosages for children. The majority of drug dosing studies have been based on adult populations, often with modification of the dosing for children based on size and weight. However, the growth and development experienced by children between birth and adulthood represents a dynamically changing biological system, with implications for effective drug dosing, efficacy as well as potential drug toxicity. The purpose of this study was to apply a metabolomics approach to gain preliminary insights into the ontogeny of liver function from newborn to adolescent.
Methods: Metabolites …
