Purpose: Participation in cancer support groups can provide a sense of community and may better prepare patients for interactions with their health care team. Online interactions may overcome some barriers to in-person support group participation. #BCSM (breast cancer social media), the first cancer support community established on Twitter, was founded in 2011 by two breast cancer survivors. The aims of this study are to describe the growth and changes in this community and to discuss future directions and lessons that may apply to other online support communities.
Methods: Symplur Signals was used to obtain all #BCSM Twitter data from January …

Seaweeds, or more properly, intertidal macroalgae have never been easy to classify—by law or by science: they are not part of the animal kingdom, nor part of the plant kingdom (and scientific controversies about their phylogenetic placement abound), they are not completely on terra firma, nor completely submerged in ocean water. One such organism that exists at the space in between land and sea—the brown alga commonly known as Rockweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) presents an intriguing legal question with implications that extend far beyond the shoreline. Recently, in Ross v. Acadian Seaplants Ltd. , the Supreme Judicial Court of Maine (Court) …

We analyze the United Nations commodities trade database (UN comtrade), comprised of international commodities exchanges in volume and price with monthly resolution. We introduce a trade impact index to quantify the impact, in terms of distance travelled, of importing a specific food raw commodity in a specific period of the year and in a specific country of the world. This index captures the seasonal exchange of raw commodities in an insightful and concise manner.

Introduction: Allostatic load (AL) defines cardiometabolic, inflammatory, and neuroendocrine changes in the body in response to internal and external stressors. It is largely unknown whether gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) alters maternal and fetal AL, which in turn affects GDM outcomes. Whether dietary intakes and quality can modify AL and thus influence GDM progression is also unknown.
Research: design and methods In this study, we recruited 35 GDM and 30 non-GDM women in gestational week 25–33. Fasting blood samples were collectedat enrollment, and cord venous blood samples were collected at delivery for the measurement of a series of AL biomarkers to …

It is established that cancer cachexia causes limb muscle atrophy and is strongly associated with morbidity and mortality; less is known about how the development of cachexia impacts the diaphragm. The purpose of this study was to investigate cellular signaling mechanisms related to mitochondrial function, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and protein synthesis during the development of cancer cachexia. C57BL/J6 mice developed Lewis Lung Carcinoma for either 0 weeks (Control), 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, or 4 weeks. At designated time points, diaphragms were harvested and analyzed. Mitochondrial respiratory control ratio was ~50% lower in experimental groups, which was …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article reflects on the potential for impact assessment (IA) to be a major vehicle for implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). While it is acknowledged that the SDGs are intended to deliver broader outcomes than IA currently does, we nevertheless argue there is significant convergence between IA and the SDGs, which we explore utilising the key dimensions of sustainability assessment: comprehensiveness, strategicness and integratedness. We conclude that ‘geared up’ IA might be used as a major vehicle to facilitate achievement of the SDGs. However, IA must become more comprehensive and integrated, such that the full suite of SDGs …

Canadian Military History
This article explores the Second World War prisoner of war diary kept by William Allister, who served with C Force, the Canadian formation sent to garrison the British colony of Hong Kong in late 1941. After the Japanese victory on 25 December 1941, Allister and his fellow survivors endured several years of brutality, malnutrition and disease in the prison camps. In the face of nearly unbelievable hardship, Allister kept a detailed diary and created works of art that provide new insight into the shattering effects of his wartime imprisonment. Allister’s story is included in the Canadian War Museum exhibition Forever …

A Review Of Late Twentieth-Century Findings On Adolescent Development In Low-Income Single-Parent Households, Shannon K. Hawkins Jr.
McNair Scholars Research Journal
It is generally understood that healthy adolescent development is influenced by a variety of factors. Current research on the effects of family structure on adolescent development have largely grown from data collected in the late twentieth century showing that when children grew up in a two-parent household they experienced significant advantages. According to Amato (2005), these advantages included experiencing a higher standard of living, more effective parenting, more cooperative co-parenting, and closer emotional relationships with both parents. Those who grew up in two-parent households demonstrated superior academic performance (Amato et al., 2015; Amato 2005), suggesting that children from single-parent environments …

Effect Of Stress On The Health Of African American Women In Low-Income Neighborhoods, Jada C. Childs
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Health problems such as obesity are more prevalent in populations of African American women than any other population in the United States. Stress has been found to disproportionately affect the health of African American women when compared to European American women. Factors such as neighborhood environment, socioeconomic status, and familial relationships play a significant role in the stress experienced by these women. This project reviews the current literature on the relationship between various stressors and the health of African American women. The purpose of this research is to increase understanding of the unique stressors that African American women face and …

Athletes' Substance Abuse And Mental Health, Brandon T. Carreathers
McNair Scholars Research Journal
The physical and emotional pressures experienced by competitive athletes are challenging. Research shows that 52% of professional football players have admitted to opioid use (Cottler et al., 2011), while up to 89% of college athletes have reported using alcohol as a response to injuries or feelings of pressure (Anderson et al., 1991). In addition, about 33.2% of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes reported having experienced episodes of depression (Debonis, 2019). This paper will examine the reasons why so many athletes’ careers result in drug abuse and how the mental health of these athletes plays a role in substance abuse …

Gingival recession often results in major aesthetic problems. Further complains of increased root surface sen- sitivity and root caries could also be encountered. Numerous techniques have been described for the manage- ment of recession. The development of the tunnel technique represents an important esthetic advancement in managing recession defects. This study was performed to compare between the use of Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) and connective tissue graft (CTG) under a modified tunnel technique for management of gingival re- cession in the esthetic zone. Sixteen Miller class I and II recession defects were equally divided for treatment with the two donor …
