Experimental Modelling With Theoretical Validation Of Liquid Crystal Display Elements For Uav Optimal (Optical) Stealth, C Lavers, R Johnson Nov 2020

Experimental Modelling With Theoretical Validation Of Liquid Crystal Display Elements For Uav Optimal (Optical) Stealth, C Lavers, R Johnson

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Advanced optical stealth technology is increasingly important in the role of aircraft platforms whether manned (e.g. F117A) or unmanned (e.g. X47B Pegasus). Here we consider the concept validity of using low power passive reflective display elements rather than high power active projection to achieve the same result. This paper presents practical consideration towards minimal radiated power, and power requirements using adaptive passive methods. Prism-coupling as a means of probing thin liquid crystal layers to obtain information on optical tensor parameters is possible using the Kraetschmann-Raether configuration. Leaky liquid crystal cells composed of a glass/ITO/aligning layer/liquid crystal/aligning layer/ITO/glass multi-layer structure support …

The Development Of Aapeptides, Lulu Wei Nov 2020

The Development Of Aapeptides, Lulu Wei

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Non-natural peptide mimics are referred to as peptidomimetics, which contains unnatural backbones that mimic the primary peptide structure. There are a large number of peptidomimetics that have been developed including α-peptides, β-peptides, peptoids, arylamide oligomers, cationic polymers, and other peptidomimetics in the last decades. Compared to conventional peptides, these peptidomimetics have many advantages such as resistance to proteolysis, improved bioavailability, and reduced immunogenicity. However, the development of peptidomimetics is still far below the expectation due to the limitation of the availability of backbones. It is an urgent need to generate a new diverse library for novel drug discovery, design antimicrobial …

Performance Characteristics And Permittivity Modeling Of A Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor For Metal Surface Monitoring In A Synthetic Maritime Environment, Christopher R. Lavers, A. M. Cree, D. Jenkins, N. Hmasalah, M. Findlay

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), an established optical sensing mode for providing quantified surface, is applied here to evaluate its suitability to provide optical parameters from metal layer measurements in a synthetic marine environment. We investigated silver noble metal films exposed to standard saline solution. Silver layers exhibit both long-term durability, and linear temporal reflectivity change, recorded in SPR minimum angle and SPR curve shape. Optical sensor design was achieved using Fresnel's optical theory for isotropic multi-layer media. We developed a datafitting routine, providing numerical real and imaginary permittivity, and thickness solutions for corroded surfaces.

Characterization Of The Hydrodynamic Functioning Of The Degracias-Sicó Karst Aquifer, Portugal, Isabel Paiva, Lúcio Cunha

KIP Articles

A study on the complex processes of hydrogeological transformation of recharge into discharge within a karst system is described. Given the absence of boreholes or points of direct observation, the applied methodology is based on study of the natural response of the main outlet of the karst aquifer, considered here as a black-box. Time series analysis and recession curve analysis are applied to daily time series of rainfall as input, and spring discharge as the output of the aquifer. Daily variations of temperature and electrical conductivity of spring water are considered as well. The present study, an integrated research endeavor, …

Looking At Environmental Consciousness Through The Lenses Of Morphic Fields And Systems Theory, Johara Bellali Nov 2020

Looking At Environmental Consciousness Through The Lenses Of Morphic Fields And Systems Theory, Johara Bellali

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This paper is an exploration of a space in which questions of self-determination and planetary crises can co-exist. It swims in uncomfortable seas of accepting that environmental consciousness is as innate as our existence, and at the same time not aligned to healthy ecosystems. In this paper, I will first explore environmental consciousness from an ecosystem perspective and present some self-organizing principles of our systems; then I will look into our perceptions, awareness, and sensing of them and finally propose an understanding of how the morphic fields in ecosystems and the creative flow of the life force co-exist in our …

Centaur Mind: A Glimpse Into An Integrative Structure Of Consciousness, Azin Izadifar Nov 2020

Centaur Mind: A Glimpse Into An Integrative Structure Of Consciousness, Azin Izadifar

Journal of Conscious Evolution

Jean Gebser’s theory of consciousness suggests that we are experiencing a new era in the history of consciousness. Human consciousness moves like a pendulum. The current Integral Structure of Consciousness is not unprecedented, yet we are experiencing it in a multi-layered, deeper, and vaster way. Centaurs are imaginal creatures that first appeared within the Mythical Structure of Consciousness, making a bridge between the unity of the Magical and the duality of Mental structures. In this paper, I view the centaurs through the lenses of mythology and archetypal depth psychology and discuss the critical role of this mythic figure in the …

A Whiteheadian Innervation Of The Soma: A New Vision For The Peripheral Nervous System, David Milliern Nov 2020

A Whiteheadian Innervation Of The Soma: A New Vision For The Peripheral Nervous System, David Milliern

Journal of Conscious Evolution

This essay draws attention to two problems in neuroscience’s set of assumptions. These self-defeating assumptions include: 1) the assumption that what the nervous system, especially the brain, does is synthesize experience, while also assuming philosophical realism, and 2) the problem of biological signal transduction. In the latter, neuroscientists and philosophers of biology have left unaddressed the issue that the signal differences between the inside and outside of the organismic boundary are of distinct ontological types; and yet no concern has been expressed regarding how it is possible that an organism’s inner states could reflect the experiential content flowing from outside …

Controlling Properties Of Light: Metamaterials Design And Methodology, Darrick Hay Nov 2020

Controlling Properties Of Light: Metamaterials Design And Methodology, Darrick Hay

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electromagnetic metamaterials are materials that have designed electromagnetic properties. In general metamaterials are subwavelength and can be treated as homogeneous media with an effective permittivity and permeability. Early metamaterial designs were developed to exhibit electromagnetic responses not typically found in naturally occuring materials, but this is not a strict requirement. Metamaterials have shown promise for applications throughout the electromagnetic spectrum. The goal of this work is to present a coherent methodology for metamaterials design, fabrication and application while also describing all of the relevant physics of the designed metamaterials.

Chapter 1 is comprised of an introduction into the field of …

Fungal Community Structure And Function Shifts With Atmospheric Nitrogen Deposition, Jessica A. M. Moore, Mark A. Anthony, Gregory J. Pec, Lidia K. Trocha, Artur Trzebny, Kevin M. Geyer, Linda T. A. Van Diepen, Serita D. Frey

Faculty Publications

Fungal decomposition of soil organic matter depends on soil nitrogen (N) availability. This ecosystem process is being jeopardized by changes in N inputs that have resulted from a tripling of atmospheric N deposition in the last century. Soil fungi are impacted by atmospheric N deposition due to higher N availability, as soils are acidified, or as micronutrients become increasingly limiting. Fungal communities that persist with chronic N deposition may be enriched with traits that enable them to tolerate environmental stress, which may trade-off with traits enabling organic matter decomposition. We hypothesized that fungal communities would respond to N deposition by …
