Brian Friel’S Translations, A Play On Power, Space, And History/ Archaeology, Maryam Beyad, Mohammad Bagher Shabanpour Jan 2020

Brian Friel’S Translations, A Play On Power, Space, And History/ Archaeology, Maryam Beyad, Mohammad Bagher Shabanpour

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Geography has received great attention since the 19th century. Kant established it as a discipline which resulted in the development of geographical equipment. Consequently, surveying projects were launched in England. This paper argues that Friel’s Translations depicts the extinction of the Irish culture, done by the Army’s implementation of Ireland Ordnance Survey in 1830, in which Irish/Gaelic toponyms, carrying a great volume of a people’s History/ Archaeology, were anglicised. The English Empire strengthened its domination over Ireland through creating new maps of the Northern territories. The paper does a Foucauldian reading of geography, as a contemporary knowledge, which aided the …

Alchemy In Eastern Literature, Hamlet Isakhanli Jan 2020

Alchemy In Eastern Literature, Hamlet Isakhanli

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Alchemy, developing in Ancient Egypt and its environs, was formed during the Islamic age as the branch of science and technology. The transmutation of base metals into noble metals and attempts to achieve immortality or rejuvenation by elixir or philosopher`s stone have been expansively reflected in Eastern literature and folklore. This research discusses the endeavors of great rulers of the ancient East, alchemists of the pre-Islamic and, especially, Islamic periods, and prominent writers of the Islamic Golden Age and contemporary period who wrote various treatises devoted or related to alchemy and alchemists. Discussions here include the great Sumerian epic “Gilgamesh” …

Neo-Orientalism Or Neo-Imperialism? Islamism In A Globalized World: Prayers For The Assassin As A Case Study Of Contemporary American Novel, Mubarak Altwaiji Jan 2020

Neo-Orientalism Or Neo-Imperialism? Islamism In A Globalized World: Prayers For The Assassin As A Case Study Of Contemporary American Novel, Mubarak Altwaiji

Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper deals with some aspects of neo-orientalism in the modern American novel highlighted in much conventional political and literary studies and conceptualized both as a composite of cultural studies and a western ideology. When applied to the post 9/11 American novel analysis, neo-orientalism uses terrorism as a significant aspect of a much broader reaction to Islamists' threats living in the United States and Europe. It is common in neo-orientalist discourse about extremism to refer to Islamism as a threat to nations and therefore, it is important to find how the American novel represents the Muslims and how vigorously acts …

Connected Multi-Domain Autonomy And Artificial Intelligence: Autonomous Localization, Networking, And Data Conformity Evaluation, Konstantinos Tountas Jan 2020

Connected Multi-Domain Autonomy And Artificial Intelligence: Autonomous Localization, Networking, And Data Conformity Evaluation, Konstantinos Tountas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

The objective of this dissertation work is the development of a solid theoretical and algorithmic framework for three of the most important aspects of autonomous/artificialintelligence (AI) systems, namely data quality assurance, localization, and communications. In the era of AI and machine learning (ML), data reign supreme. During learning tasks, we need to ensure that the training data set is correct and complete. During operation, faulty data need to be discovered and dealt with to protect from -potentially catastrophic- system failures. With our research in data quality assurance, we develop new mathematical theory and algorithms for outlier-resistant decomposition of high-dimensional matrices …

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman Jan 2020

Development Of A Biosensor For Objectively Quantifying Odorants, Sharmily Rahman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Nuisance odor levels produced by solid waste management operations are subject to regulatory standards due to their impacts on the quality of life of the residents living nearby the facility. Failure to meet regulatory standards may result in fines, litigation, inability to acquire permits, mitigation, and re-siting operations. Since measurement of environmental nuisance odors is currently limited to subjective techniques, monitoring odor levels to meet such standards is often problematic. This is becoming more acute as increasing residential populations begin to encroach on properties adjacent to landfills. In order to ensure that nuisance odor issues are minimized, it is necessary …

Development Of An Innovative Daily Qa System For Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy, Maxwell Kassel Jan 2020

Development Of An Innovative Daily Qa System For Pencil-Beam Scanning Proton Therapy, Maxwell Kassel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this work, we have developed a robust daily quality assurance (QA) system for pencil-beam scanning (PBS) dosimetry. A novel phantom and multi-PTV PBS plan were used in conjunction with the Sun Nuclear Daily QA3 multichamber detector array to verify output, range, and spot position. The sensitivity to detect change in these parameters with our designed tests was determined empirically. Associated tolerance levels were established based on these sensitivities and guidelines published in recent American Association of Physics in Medicine (AAPM) task group reports. The output has remained within the 3% tolerance and the range was within ±1mm. Spot position …

Development Of Guidelines For Implementation Of Freight And Transit Signal Priorities To Enhance Road Traffic Sustainability, Taraneh Ardalan Jan 2020

Development Of Guidelines For Implementation Of Freight And Transit Signal Priorities To Enhance Road Traffic Sustainability, Taraneh Ardalan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Lately, the attractiveness of cities has contributed to a rise in vehicle movements to and from cities. The growth of freight movements in cities predictably will be one of the critical issues of the near future. Congestion caused by the increased movements of freight impacts the flow of private and transit vehicles. Thus, it is crucial to reduce the congestion on multimodal corridors. Components of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) such as Freight Signal Priority (FSP) and Transit Signal Priority (TSP) that promote the freight and transit vehicles may not only help solve these conditions but may assist with the …

Discovery Of Genes And Molecular Processes That Are Important For The Pathogenesis Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Alexander Kwakye

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is a complex brain disorder that affects at least one in every ten persons aged 65 and above worldwide. The pathogenesis of this disorder remains elusive. In this work, we utilized a rich set of publicly available gene expression data to elucidate the genes and molecular processes that may underlie its pathogenesis. We developed a new ranking score to prioritize molecular pathways enriched in differentially expressed genes during AD. After applying our new ranking score, GO categories such as cotranslational protein targeting to membrane, SRP-dependent cotranslational protein targeting to membrane, and spliceosomal snRNP assembly were found to …

Empirical Analysis Of The Dissipated Acoustic Energy In Wave Breaking, Kristina Francke Jan 2020

Empirical Analysis Of The Dissipated Acoustic Energy In Wave Breaking, Kristina Francke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2020 - Present

In this research an attempt is made at explaining the physical processes behind energy dissipation during wave breaking, through spectral analysis of the resulting sound. The size of an air bubble can be directly linked to the frequency of the sound that is heard using the simple harmonic solution to the Rayleigh–Plesset equation. It indicates the inverse relationship between frequency and bubble size. And this relationship has been used to identify wave breaking in general [MANASSEH 2006]. Now this research goes a step farther and looks at how the frequency spectrum of the sound changes with time, in an effort …

Teaching Students How To Think, Not What To Think: Pedagogy And Political Psychology, Gabriel M. Velez, Seamus A. Power Jan 2020

Teaching Students How To Think, Not What To Think: Pedagogy And Political Psychology, Gabriel M. Velez, Seamus A. Power

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Academia is often critiqued as an “ivory tower” where research, thinking, and teaching are isolated from the complexity and everyday experience of so many people. As instructors of political and other psychology courses, we strive to break down these barriers and engage with the dynamic and nuanced nature of phenomena as situated in lived social and political contexts. In this report, we unpack and detail how we strive to achieve this goal by expanding on Plous’ articulation of action teaching (2012). We first define our pedagogical focus on active engagement, critical thinking, and staying on the move between multiple perspectives. …

Influence Of The Coriolis Effect On The Properties Of Scattering Resonances In Symmetric And Asymmetric Isotopomers Of Ozone, Igor Gayday, Elizaveta Grushnikova, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Scattering resonances above dissociation threshold are computed for four isotopically substituted ozone species: 16O18O16O, 16O16O18O, 18O16O18O and 16O18O18O, using a variational method with accurate treatment of the rotation–vibration coupling terms (Coriolis effect) for all values of the total angular momentum J from 0 to 4. To make these calculations numerically affordable, a new approach was developed which employs one vibrational basis set optimized for a typical rotational excitation (J,Λ), to run coupled rotation–vibration calculations at several …

Route Exploration And Synthesis Of The Reported Pyridone-Based Pdi Inhibitor Stk076545, Eric Greve, Sergey V. Lindeman, Christina Scartelli, Lin Lin, Robert Flaumenhaft, Chris Dockendorff

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

The enzyme protein disulfide isomerase (PDI) is essential for the correct folding of proteins and the activation of certain cell surface receptors, and is a promising target for the treatment of cancer and thrombotic conditions. A previous high-throughput screen identified the commercial compound STK076545 as a promising PDI inhibitor. To confirm its activity and support further biological studies, a resynthesis was pursued of the reported β-keto-amide with an N-alkylated pyridone at the α-position. Numerous conventional approaches were complicated by undesired fragmentations or rearrangements. However, a successful 5-step synthetic route was achieved using an aldol reaction with an α-pyridone allyl …

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Two mononuclear iron(II)–thiolate complexes have been prepared that represent structural models of the nonheme iron enzymes EgtB and OvoA, which catalyze the O2-dependent formation of carbon–sulfur bonds in the biosynthesis of thiohistidine compounds. The series of Fe(II) complexes reported here feature tripodal N4 chelates (LA and LB) that contain both pyridyl and imidazolyl donors (LA = (1H-imidazol-4-yl)-N,N-bis((pyridin-2-yl)methyl)methanamine; LB = N,N-bis((1-methylimidazol-2-yl)methyl)-2-pyridylmethylamine). Further coordination with monodentate aromatic or aliphatic thiolate ligands yielded the five-coordinate, high-spin Fe(II) complexes [FeII(LA)(SMes)]BPh …

Voltammetry And Spectroelectrochemistry Of Tcnq In Acetonitrile/Rtil Mixtures, Abderrahman Atifi, Michael D. Ryan Jan 2020

Voltammetry And Spectroelectrochemistry Of Tcnq In Acetonitrile/Rtil Mixtures, Abderrahman Atifi, Michael D. Ryan

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Understanding the solvation and ion-pairing interactions of anionic substrates in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTIL) is key for the electrochemical applications of these new classes of solvents. In this work, cyclic voltammetry and visible and infrared spectroelectrochemistry of tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) was examined in molecular (acetonitrile) and RTIL solvents, as well as mixtures of these solvents. The overall results were consistent with the formation of RTIL/acetonitrile nanodomains. The voltammetry indicated that the first electrogenerated product, TCNQ−, was not incorporated into the RTIL nanodomain, while the second electrogenerated product, TCNQ2−, was strongly attracted to the RTIL nanodomain. The visible …

Enhanced Light Harvesting Ability In Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Through Energy Transfer From Cds Nanowires, Yixuan Zhou, Wenhui Hu, Sizhuo Yang, Jier Huang Jan 2020

Enhanced Light Harvesting Ability In Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks Through Energy Transfer From Cds Nanowires, Yixuan Zhou, Wenhui Hu, Sizhuo Yang, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) represent a novel class of porous crystalline materials that have demonstrated potential as light harvesting materials for solar energy conversion. In order to facilitate their application in solar energy conversion, it is necessary to expand their absorption further into the realm of the solar spectrum. In this work, we report the incorporation of semiconductor cadmium sulfide nanowires (CdS NWs) into ZIF-67 (CdS@ZIF-67), where a broader region of the solar spectrum can be absorbed by CdS NWs and relayed to ZIF-67 through an energy transfer (EnT) process. Using steady-state emission and time resolved emission and absorption spectroscopy, …

Adiabatic Trajectory Approximation Within The Framework Of Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory, Bikramaditya Mandal, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov Jan 2020

Adiabatic Trajectory Approximation Within The Framework Of Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory, Bikramaditya Mandal, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

A hierarchy of approximate methods is proposed for solving the equations of motion within a framework of the mixed quantum/classical theory (MQCT) of inelastic molecular collisions. Of particular interest is a limiting case: the method in which the classical-like equations of motion for the translational degrees of freedom (scattering) are decoupled from the quantum-like equations for time evolution of the internal molecular states (rotational and vibrational). In practice, trajectories are pre-computed during the first step of calculations with driving forces determined solely by the potential energy surface of the entrance channel, which is an adiabatic trajectory approximation. Quantum state-to-state transition …

Dynamic Evolution And Reversibility Of Single-Atom Ni(Ii) Active Site In 1t-Mos2 Electrocatalysts For Hydrogen Evolution, Brian Pattengale, Yichao Huang, Xingxu Yan, Sizhou Yang, Sabrina Younan, Wenhui Hu, Zhida Li, Sungsik Lee, Xiaoping Pan, Jing Gu, Jier Huang

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

1T-MoS2 and single-atom modified analogues represent a highly promising class of low-cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the role of single atoms, either as active species or promoters, remains vague despite its essentiality toward more efficient HER. In this work, we report the unambiguous identification of Ni single atom as key active sites in the basal plane of 1T-MoS2 (Ni@1T-MoS2) that result in efficient HER performance. The intermediate structure of this Ni active site under catalytic conditions was captured by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, where a reversible metallic Ni species (Ni0) …

Catastrophe Models For Cognitive Workload And Fatigue: Project Log 2012-2020, Stephen J. Guastello Jan 2020

Catastrophe Models For Cognitive Workload And Fatigue: Project Log 2012-2020, Stephen J. Guastello

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Many real-world tasks require people to forecast chaotic events in order to take adaptive action. This ability is considered rare, and less understood than other cognitive processes. The present study examined how the performance dynamics in a chaotic forecasting task would be affected by stressors such as cognitive workload and fatigue using two cusp catastrophe models. Participants were 147 undergraduates who were shown graphs and brief chaotic number series for which they needed to forecast the next four values. Performance data were complemented by variables known to represent cognitive elasticity versus rigidity, compensatory abilities for fatigue, and NASA TLX ratings …
