"A Video Of Myself Helps Me Learn": A Scoping Review Of The Evidence Of Video-Making For Situated Learning, Iris Epstein, Melanie Baljko Dr, Kurt Thumlert, Evadne Kelly, James Andrew Smith, Yelin Su, Justeena Zaki-Azat, Natasha M. May Jan 2020

"A Video Of Myself Helps Me Learn": A Scoping Review Of The Evidence Of Video-Making For Situated Learning, Iris Epstein, Melanie Baljko Dr, Kurt Thumlert, Evadne Kelly, James Andrew Smith, Yelin Su, Justeena Zaki-Azat, Natasha M. May

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Nursing, dance and studio-based arts, engineering, and athletic therapy are viewed as practice-oriented professions in which the teaching and situated learning of practical skills are central. In order to succeed, students must perform a series of performance-based assessments, which seemingly require an “able” body to enact complex tasks in situated and/or simulation-based contexts (for example, “safe nursing practice”). Our interdisciplinary research seeks to intervene within the culture of professional learning by investigating what we know about the use of smartphone video recording for situated, practice-based learning, and for supporting interactive video-based assessment as a means of accommodation and extending access …

Incorporating Social Justice Into Statistical Instruction: Using Action Research To Impact Pre-Service Teachers, Basil M. Conway Iv, Ha Nguyen Jan 2020

Incorporating Social Justice Into Statistical Instruction: Using Action Research To Impact Pre-Service Teachers, Basil M. Conway Iv, Ha Nguyen

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The following action research depicts how two researchers from two universities merged their courses and goals of instruction to impact change in future teachers. Two currently practicing middle school teachers from one university worked with researchers to develop a social justice lesson that had relevance to seventeen K-8 pre-service teachers at another university to promote changes in beliefs about equitable teaching practices and policy. Findings from pre- and post-surveys, field notes during enactment, and reflections teachers found teaching statistics for social justice (TS4SJ) in this setting provided an increased responsiveness to the needs of students and statistical connections while also …

Family Interaction Patterns And A Successful College Transition, Megan Elizabeth Six Jan 2020

Family Interaction Patterns And A Successful College Transition, Megan Elizabeth Six

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study explored the connections between family interaction patterns in a student’s family of origin and how those interactions related to their adjustment to college as defined by grade point average and mental health. The college transition stands out as a point where the individual gains more autonomy. Successfully completing college positively impacts the life chances of the student and thus, it is important to understand how the family of origin can positively or negatively impact the student. This research examined family cohesion and flexibility as outlined by Olson’s Circumplex model, and the effect that family interaction patterns have on …

Providing Better Choices: An Exploration Of Solutions In Multi-Objective Optimization And Game Theory Using Variational Analysis, Glenn Matthew Harris Jan 2020

Providing Better Choices: An Exploration Of Solutions In Multi-Objective Optimization And Game Theory Using Variational Analysis, Glenn Matthew Harris

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Multi-objective optimization problems and game theory problems have a wide array of

applications and because of this there are different types of solutions available. This dissertation

explores two areas of optimization and a solution type for each. First, substantial

efficiency (SE) as a type of solution to multi-objective optimization problems that extends

proper efficiency. Secondly, strong Nash equilibria (SNE) as a type of solution to game

theoretic problems that extends Nash equilibria. Substantial efficiency is demonstrated to

be a superior solution to the more rudimentary notion of proper efficiency in solving some

multi-objective financial market and economic problems. Using this …

Tunable Refractive Index Through Spatially Modified Nanoparticle Films For Long-Range Spr Biosensing Applications, Stephen Joshua Binderup Jan 2020

Tunable Refractive Index Through Spatially Modified Nanoparticle Films For Long-Range Spr Biosensing Applications, Stephen Joshua Binderup

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Despite optics and refraction being among the oldest scientific principles, material limitations have prevented scientists from taking full advantage of the potential this technology holds. Indeed, films with designer optical properties have potential for use in exotic cloaking architectures, advanced waveguides, and precise optical biosensors. This thesis focuses on the fabrication methodology for making thin films with refractive index tuned to a desired value through self-assembly of amorphous nanoparticle films made of organosilicate materials. The inclusion of a slowly evaporating polymer phase along with the organosilicate nanoparticles results in nanopores formed within the film, which effectively reduce the film’s refractive …

Integration Of Steam With Allyl-Isothiocyanate For Soil Disinfestation, Dong Sub Kim, Mark Hoffmann, Steven Kim, Bertha A. Scholler, Steven A. Fennimore Jan 2020

Integration Of Steam With Allyl-Isothiocyanate For Soil Disinfestation, Dong Sub Kim, Mark Hoffmann, Steven Kim, Bertha A. Scholler, Steven A. Fennimore

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Steam has long been used to disinfest greenhouse soils. However, there is increasing interest in expanding the use of steam for in-field soil disinfestation as an alternative to chemical fumigants. Previous studies demonstrated that allyl-isothiocyanate (AITC) reduced viability of weed seeds and plant pathogen propagules, but AITC has a low vapor pressure and is relatively immobile in soil. Heat has been used in the past to enhance the mobility of soil fumigants such as methyl bromide (i.e., “hot gassing”). The effect of steam heat on the mobility of AITC is unknown. The objective of this study was to investigate the …

The Sigma Chromatic Number Of The Sierpinski Gasket Graphs And The Hanoi Graphs, Agnes Garciano, Reginaldo M. Marcelo, Mari-Jo P. Ruiz, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino Jan 2020

The Sigma Chromatic Number Of The Sierpinski Gasket Graphs And The Hanoi Graphs, Agnes Garciano, Reginaldo M. Marcelo, Mari-Jo P. Ruiz, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino

Mathematics Faculty Publications

A vertex coloring c : V(G) → of a non-trivial connected graph G is called a sigma coloring if σ(u) ≠ σ(v) for any pair of adjacent vertices u and v. Here, σ(x) denotes the sum of the colors assigned to vertices adjacent to x. The sigma chromatic number of G, denoted by σ(G), is defined as the fewest number of colors needed to construct a sigma coloring of G. In this paper, we determine the sigma chromatic numbers of the …

Twin Chromatic Indices Of Some Graphs With Maximum Degree 3, Jayson D. Tolentino, Reginaldo M. Marcelo, Mark Anthony C. Tolentino

Mathematics Faculty Publications

Let k ≥ 2 be an integer and G be a connected graph of order at least 3. A twin k-edge coloring of G is a proper edge coloring of G that uses colors from k and that induces a proper vertex coloring on G where the color of a vertex v is the sum (in k ) of the colors of the edges incident with v. The smallest integer k for which G has a twin k-edge coloring is the twin chromatic index of G and is denoted by . In this paper, we determine the …

On Eigenvalue Bounds For The Finite-State Birth-Death Process Intensity Matrix, R.R.P Tan, K Ikeda, Len Patrick Dominic M. Garces Jan 2020

On Eigenvalue Bounds For The Finite-State Birth-Death Process Intensity Matrix, R.R.P Tan, K Ikeda, Len Patrick Dominic M. Garces

Mathematics Faculty Publications

The paper sets forth a novel eigenvalue interlacing property across the finite-state birth-death process intensity matrix and two clearly identified submatrices as an extension of Cauchy’s interlace theorem for Hermitian matrix eigenvalues. A supplemental proof involving an examination of probabilities acquired from specific movements across states and a derivation of a form for the eigenpolynomial of the matrix through convolution and Laplace transform is then presented towards uncovering a similar characteristic for the general Markov chain transition rate matrix. Consequently, the proposition generates bounds for each eigenvalue of the original matrix, easing numerical computation. To conclude, the applicability of the …

Feedback Between Psychological Science And Policy In The Context Of Same-Sex Couples, Adam W. Fingerhut, David M. Frost Jan 2020

Feedback Between Psychological Science And Policy In The Context Of Same-Sex Couples, Adam W. Fingerhut, David M. Frost

Psychological Science Faculty Works

Psychological science informed recent policy changes granting increased rights for same-sex couples. Understanding that the link between science and policy goes both ways, how should policy inform the next generation of research concerning same-sex couples and sexual minority individuals? This article presents ways that psychological research influenced marriage policy and then puts forth suggestions for future research for the attention of scholars, funders, and policymakers. These include examinations of minority stress in the age of marriage equality; new stressors for same-sex couples including legal divorce; relationship expectations and experiences for emerging adults; and the potential impact of marriage equality for …

From Biquandle Structures To Hom-Biquandles, Alissa Crans Jan 2020

From Biquandle Structures To Hom-Biquandles, Alissa Crans

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We investigate the relationship between the quandle and biquandle coloring invariant and obtain an enhancement of the quandle and biquandle coloring invariants using biquandle structures. We also continue the study of biquandle homomorphisms into a medial biquandle begun in [Hom quandles, J. Knot Theory Ramifications 23(2) (2014)], finding biquandle analogs of results therein. We describe the biquandle structure of the Hom-biquandle, and consider the relationship between the Hom-quandle and Hom-biquandle.

Graphs Admitting Only Constant Splines, Alissa Crans, Blake Mellor Jan 2020

Graphs Admitting Only Constant Splines, Alissa Crans, Blake Mellor

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

We study generalized graph splines, introduced by Gilbert, Tymoczko, and Viel (2016). For a large class of rings, we characterize the graphs that only admit constant splines. To do this, we prove that if a graph has a particular type of cutset (e.g., a bridge), then the space of splines naturally decomposes as a certain direct sum of submodules. As an application, we use these results to describe splines on a triangulation studied by Zhou and Lai, but over a different ring than they used.

A Linear Optimal Feedback Control For Producing 1,3-Propanediol Via Microbial Fermentation, Yangping Ma Jan 2020

A Linear Optimal Feedback Control For Producing 1,3-Propanediol Via Microbial Fermentation, Yangping Ma

Mathematics, Statistics and Data Science Faculty Works

In this paper, we consider a multistage feedback control strategy for the production of 1,3-propanediol(1,3-PD) in microbial fermentation. The feedback control strategy is widely used in industry, and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time it is applied to 1,3-PD. The feedback control law is assumed to be linear of the concentrations of biomass and glycerol, and the coefficients in the controller are continuous. A multistage feedback control law is obtained by using the control parameterization method on the coefficient functions. Then, the optimal control problem can be transformed into an optimal parameter selection problem. The …

Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And Mond, Gabriele U. Varieschi Jan 2020

Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity And Mond, Gabriele U. Varieschi

Physics Faculty Works

This paper introduces a possible alternative model of gravity based on the theory of fractional-dimension spaces and its applications to Newtonian gravity. In particular, Gauss’s law for gravity as well as other fundamental classical laws are extended to a D-dimensional metric space, where D can be a non-integer dimension. We show a possible connection between this Newtonian Fractional-Dimension Gravity (NFDG) and Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), a leading alternative gravity model which accounts for the observed properties of galaxies and other astrophysical structures without requiring the dark matter hypothesis. The MOND acceleration constant $${a_{0}} \simeq 1.2 \times 10^{-10} \text {m}\, \text{s}^{-2}$$can …

A Criteria-Based Approach To The Traveling Salesman Problem (Tsp), Daryl Ono, Jose Rincón, Althea Thomas Jan 2020

A Criteria-Based Approach To The Traveling Salesman Problem (Tsp), Daryl Ono, Jose Rincón, Althea Thomas

Librarian Publications & Presentations

The “traveling salesman problem (TSP)” is a classic minimum cost network flow problem in mathematical programming and graph theory that can be formulated in multiple configurations. The fundamental question, however, is: “what is a cost”? The original “traveling salesman problem (TSP)” defines distance as the cost and the objective is to minimize distance traveled. This paper proposes other “cost” criteria to the original problem and also proposes a maximum revenue network flow as a variant to improve managerial decision-making. The proposed decision table methodology can be applied to problems that involve multiple locations or multiple tasks to complete.

Investigating Los Angeles' Urban Roadway Network From A Biologically-Formed Perspective, Sophia Deen, Tatiana Kuzmenko, Demian A. Willette, Hossein Asghari Jan 2020

Investigating Los Angeles' Urban Roadway Network From A Biologically-Formed Perspective, Sophia Deen, Tatiana Kuzmenko, Demian A. Willette, Hossein Asghari

Biology Faculty Works

The evolution of networks is constrained by spatial properties of the environment; a characterization that is true in both biological and built networks. Hence built networks such as urban streets can be compared to biological networks to reveal differences in efficiency and complexity. This study assessed foraging networks created by the slime-mold Physarium polycephalum on proportional 3D-printed topographic maps of metropolitan city of Los Angeles, California. Rapidly-generated isomorphic solutions were found to be consistently and statistically shorter than existing roadways in system length. Slime mold also allocated resources to supporting key nodes, analogous to how heavy traffic flows through major …

Big Data Classification Efficiency Based On Linear Discriminant Analysis, Ahmed Hussein Ali, Zahraa Faiz Hussain, Shamis N. Abd Jan 2020

Big Data Classification Efficiency Based On Linear Discriminant Analysis, Ahmed Hussein Ali, Zahraa Faiz Hussain, Shamis N. Abd

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

The proliferation of online platforms recently has led to unprecedented increase in data generation;this has given rise to the concept of big data which characterizes data in terms of volume, velocity, variety, andveracity. One of the common multivariate statistical data analysis tools is linear discriminant analysis (LDA) whichrelies on the concept of obtaining the separation among groups through LDA. The prediction of the class of a givenclass of data points can be achieved through classification, a supervised learning technique but prior to a classificationprocess, a classification model must first be built using classification algorithms. Several classification algorithms areavailable for prediction …

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The objective of this study was to design a solar powered, unmanned aircraft to orbit in the upper Venus atmosphere and search for signs of alien life. Topics of flight conditions, signs of life, basic mission plan, source of power, design process, instrumentation, and final designs are covered. Solar energy is ideal for this type of mission because it is the only reliable and abundant energy source accessible for long term space travel. The target altitude, being 60 to 70 km, has winds of up to 95 m/s. The aircraft will need to remain stable under such conditions. Due to …
