Navigating Immersive And Interactive Vr Environments With Connected 360° Panoramas, Samuel Cosgrove Jan 2020

Navigating Immersive And Interactive Vr Environments With Connected 360° Panoramas, Samuel Cosgrove

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Emerging research is expanding the idea of using 360-degree spherical panoramas of real-world environments for use in "360 VR" experiences beyond video and image viewing. However, most of these experiences are strictly guided, with few opportunities for interaction or exploration. There is a desire to develop experiences with cohesive virtual environments created with 360 VR that allow for choice in navigation, versus scripted experiences with limited interaction. Unlike standard VR with the freedom of synthetic graphics, there are challenges in designing appropriate user interfaces (UIs) for 360 VR navigation within the limitations of fixed assets. To tackle this gap, we …

An Information-Potential Approach To Airborne Lidar Point Cloud Sampling And Assessment, Kristian Damkjer Jan 2020

An Information-Potential Approach To Airborne Lidar Point Cloud Sampling And Assessment, Kristian Damkjer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In the last decade, airborne laser scanning (ALS) systems have evolved to provide increasingly high-fidelity topographic mapping data. Point clouds and derivative models now rival photogrammetrically-derived equivalents. Yet, despite technological advancement and widespread adoption of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data, sampling guidance and data quality (DQ) assessment remains an open area of research due to the volumetric and irregularly sampled nature of point clouds and the persistent influence of assumptions from early point scanning LiDAR systems on assessment methods. This dissertation makes several contributions to the research area by considering point cloud sampling strategies and DQ assessment from an …

Modeling Flow And Nitrate Transport In Karst Groundwater Basins, Yuan Gao Jan 2020

Modeling Flow And Nitrate Transport In Karst Groundwater Basins, Yuan Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Understanding the groundwater flow in karst aquifers and the effect of best management practices (BMPs) on nitrate decrease in spring discharge is critical for effective management and protection of karst water resources. However, the control on the conduit network's impacts on spring discharge and nitrate concentration is not fully understood, and the cumulative effects of BMP on reducing nitrate in karst groundwater systems have not been evaluated at the basin scale. In this dissertation, a coupled Conduit Flow Process (CFPv2) and Conduit Mass Three-Dimensional (CMT3D) model was applied to evaluate the biosorption-activated media (BAM)-based BMP on nitrate removal in Silver …

Fruits In Dakhleh: Isotopic And Bayesian Mixed-Model Reconstruction Of Food Source Contributions And Diet At Kellis 2 Cemetery, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt, Melissa Gomez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis applies a new methodology to dietary reconstructions of a unique population excavated from Kellis 2, a Romano-Christian era (c.50-450 AD) cemetery located in the ancient city of Kellis, Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. Previously, stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analyses were conducted on bulk hair keratin from 216 individuals to examine their dietary practices and health status. Although this research identified the presence of specific dietary choices in the community, the researchers were not able to determine what fraction of the diet was composed of those resources. This is the first such study to use a priori dietary reconstruction data …

Viscoelastic Analysis Of High Strain Composites For Deployable Structures In Space Applications, Andrew Gomez-Delrio Jan 2020

Viscoelastic Analysis Of High Strain Composites For Deployable Structures In Space Applications, Andrew Gomez-Delrio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Thin-ply composite laminates capable of enduring high strains are currently under investigation for compliant deployable spacecraft structures. Deployable structures such as booms fabricated from these materials can be flattened and coiled to high curvatures, achieving a compact configuration for stowage. Once in orbit, they are released with minimal actuation for deployment, allowing the operational geometry to be recovered. Previous studies have shown that the viscoelastic properties of the composite epoxy matrix can negatively impact final shape accuracy due to stress relaxation during stowage. In addition, since the strain energy stored is relied upon for deployment, considerable relaxation can potentially result …

Computational Methods For Discovery And Analysis Of Rna Structural Motifs, Shahidul Islam Jan 2020

Computational Methods For Discovery And Analysis Of Rna Structural Motifs, Shahidul Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Understanding the 3D structural properties of RNAs will play a critical role in identifying their functional characteristics and designing new RNAs for RNA-based therapeutics and nanotechnology. In an attempt to achieve a better insight into RNAs, biochemical experiments have been conducted to produce data with positional details of atoms in RNA structures. This data has created opportunities for applying computational analysis to solve various biological problems. In this dissertation, we have addressed annotation issues of base-pairing interactions in the low-resolution structure data and presented new methods to analyze RNA structural motifs. Annotating base-pairing interactions is one of the critical steps …

Investigating The Inclusiveness Of Stem Courses And Reducing Barriers By Using The Universal Design For Learning Framework, Westley James Jan 2020

Investigating The Inclusiveness Of Stem Courses And Reducing Barriers By Using The Universal Design For Learning Framework, Westley James

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Students with disabilities are in postsecondary STEM courses and degree programs, but only a few studies have investigated how STEM courses can be designed to support students with disabilities. We began addressing this gap by interviewing students with diagnoses characterized by variations in executive functions about their experiences in postsecondary STEM courses. We analyzed the interviews through a social relational perspective of disability as this allowed us to identify how course structures disable students from effective engagement with STEM courses. We found STEM courses present heightened barriers compared to non-STEM courses, with common barriers including a lack of resources and …

Towards Scalable Network Traffic Measurement With Sketches, Rhongho Jang Jan 2020

Towards Scalable Network Traffic Measurement With Sketches, Rhongho Jang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Driven by the ever-increasing data volume through the Internet, the per-port speed of network devices reached 400 Gbps, and high-end switches are capable of processing 25.6 Tbps of network traffic. To improve the efficiency and security of the network, network traffic measurement becomes more important than ever. For fast and accurate traffic measurement, managing an accurate working set of active flows (WSAF) at line rates is a key challenge. WSAF is usually located in high-speed but expensive memories, such as TCAM or SRAM, and thus their capacity is quite limited. To scale up the per-flow measurement, we pursue three thrusts. …

Design Of Ternary Operations Utilizing Flow-Based Computing, James Pyrich Jan 2020

Design Of Ternary Operations Utilizing Flow-Based Computing, James Pyrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

The development of algorithms and circuit designs that exploit devices that have the ability to persist multiple values will lead to alternative technologies to overcome the issues caused by the end of Dennard scaling and slowing of Moore's Law. Flow-based designs have been used to develop binary adders and multipliers. Data stored on non-volatile memristors are used to direct the flow of current through nanowires arranged in a crossbar. The algorithmic design of the flow-based crossbar is fast, compact, and efficient. In this paper, we seek to automate the discovery of flow-based designs of ternary circuits utilizing memristive crossbars.

Towards Robust Artificial Intelligence Systems, Sunny Raj Jan 2020

Towards Robust Artificial Intelligence Systems, Sunny Raj

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Adoption of deep neural networks (DNNs) into safety-critical and high-assurance systems has been hindered by the inability of DNNs to handle adversarial and out-of-distribution input. State-of-the-art DNNs misclassify adversarial input and give high confidence output for out-of-distribution input. We attempt to solve this problem by employing two approaches, first, by detecting adversarial input and, second, by developing a confidence metric that can indicate when a DNN system has reached its limits and is not performing to the desired specifications. The effectiveness of our method at detecting adversarial input is demonstrated against the popular DeepFool adversarial image generation method. On a …

The Susceptibility Of Deep Neural Networks To Natural Perturbations, Mesut Ozdag Jan 2020

The Susceptibility Of Deep Neural Networks To Natural Perturbations, Mesut Ozdag

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Deep learning systems have achieved great success in various types of applications in recent years. They are increasingly being adopted for safety-critical tasks such as face recognition, surveillance systems, speech recognition, and autonomous driving. On the other hand, it has been found that deep neural networks (DNNs) can easily be fooled by adversarial input samples. These imperceptible perturbations on images can lead any machine learning system to misclassify the objects with high confidence. Furthermore, they can be almost indistinguishable to a human observer. These systems can also be exposed to adverse weather conditions such as fog, rain, and snow. This …

Generating Velocity-Dependent Potential In All Partial Waves, Ashwini Kumar Behera, Ujjwal Laha, Jhasaketan Bhoi

Turkish Journal of Physics

Velocity/energy-dependent potential to a parent nonlocal interaction is constructed for all partial waves by Taylor series expansion method and the related s and p-wave phase shifts for N-N and α-N systems are computed by application of modified phase equation. Our phase shifts are in good agreement with standard data.

Field-Free Quantum-Spin-1/2 Xxz Model In Three-Dimensions: Phases, Phase Transitions, And Phase Diagrams By Renormalization Group Theory, Ozan Sabahatti̇n Sariyer Jan 2020

Field-Free Quantum-Spin-1/2 Xxz Model In Three-Dimensions: Phases, Phase Transitions, And Phase Diagrams By Renormalization Group Theory, Ozan Sabahatti̇n Sariyer

Turkish Journal of Physics

The field-free quantum-spin-1/2 XXZ model is studied in three-dimensions using renormalization group theory. We obtain global phase diagrams and critical properties. We identify zero-temperature quantum phase transitions at isotropic points, as well as long-range order below critical temperatures at all anisotropies. We show that the excitation spectrum is gapless in XY-like, and gapped in Ising-like anisotropy regimes. Besides, internal energy density, specific heat, nearest-neighbor entanglement measures and spin-spin correlations are obtained globally at all temperatures. Our numerical results cover the global range of anisotropy parameter, for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic cases.

Tunneling Radiation And Quantum Entropy Of A Massive Gravity Black Hole, Gu Qiang Li, Yi Wen Zhuang Jan 2020

Tunneling Radiation And Quantum Entropy Of A Massive Gravity Black Hole, Gu Qiang Li, Yi Wen Zhuang

Turkish Journal of Physics

By using the Parikh-Wilczek (PW) quantum tunneling method, the Hawking radiation of black holes in massive gravity is investigated, the emission rate of particles and the black hole entropy are calculated. It is shown that the emission spectrum is not purely thermal, depends on the increment of the black hole entropy, consists with an accurate unitary theory and supports the standpoint of information conservation. Unlike other modified gravities, the entropy of the massive gravity black hole unexpectedly conforms to the area law just as that of Einstein gravity black hole.

Determining The Age Of Spoiled Milk From Dried Films Using Attenuated Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (Atr Ft-Ir) Spectroscopy, Zack Richardson, David Perezguaita, Kamila Kochan, Bayden Wood Jan 2020

Determining The Age Of Spoiled Milk From Dried Films Using Attenuated Reflection Fourier Transform Infrared (Atr Ft-Ir) Spectroscopy, Zack Richardson, David Perezguaita, Kamila Kochan, Bayden Wood

Articles

Milk spoilage is an inevitable occurrence, which generates waste and can result in food poisoning. When milk spoils, the off-flavor and curdling are due to excessive proliferation of various bacteria which causes pH changes. Time, temperature, environment, and previous handling practice all affects the spoilage rate. There is a need for a fast reliable and accurate method that can identify in situearly spoilage of milk. Here we show the ability of attenuated total reflectionFourier transformed infrared spectroscopy(ATR FT-IR) in conjunction with multivariate data analysis to predict the age of milk. We found that dried films vastly increased the absorbance of important …

An Economic Approach To Religious Exemptions, Stephanie H. Barclay Jan 2020

An Economic Approach To Religious Exemptions, Stephanie H. Barclay

Journal Articles

Externalities caused by religious exemptions have been getting the spotlight again in light a case the U.S. Supreme Court will hear this term: Fulton v. City of Philadelphia. Some argue that religious individuals should be required to internalize the costs they impose on third parties and thus should be denied the right to practice that harmful behavior. These new progressive theories about harm trade on rhetoric and normative intuitions regarding externalities and costs. But curiously, these theories also largely ignore an influential theoretical movement that has studied externalities and costs for the last fifty years: law and economics.

Random Sequence Perception Amongst Finance And Accounting Personnel: Can We Measure Illusion Of Control, A Type I Error, Or Illusion Of Chaos, A Type Ii Error?, Keith I. Taylor Jan 2020

Random Sequence Perception Amongst Finance And Accounting Personnel: Can We Measure Illusion Of Control, A Type I Error, Or Illusion Of Chaos, A Type Ii Error?, Keith I. Taylor

Dissertations from the Executive Doctorate in Business Administration Program

The purpose of this dissertation was to determine if finance and accounting personnel could distinguish between random and non-random time-series strings and to determine what types of errors they would make. These individuals averaging 13 years of experience were unable to distinguish non-random patterns from random strings in an assessment composed of statistical process control (SPC) charts. Respondents scored no better than guessing which was also assessed with a series of true-false questions. Neither over-alternation (oscillation) nor under-alternation (trend) strategies were able to predict type I or type II error rates, i.e. illusion of control or illusion of chaos. Latent …

A Spatially Distributed Investigation Of Stream Water Temperature In A Contemporary Mixed-Land-Use Watershed, Jason P. Horne Jan 2020

A Spatially Distributed Investigation Of Stream Water Temperature In A Contemporary Mixed-Land-Use Watershed, Jason P. Horne

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Stream water temperature is an important physical variable that influences many biological and abiotic water quality processes. The land-use/land-cover (LULC) types and corresponding variability in stream water temperature (Tw) processes in contemporary mixed-land-use watersheds necessitate research to advance management and policy decisions. Water temperature was analyzed from 21 gauging sites using a nested-scale experimental watershed study design. Results showed that forested land use was significantly negatively correlated (α = 0.05) with mean and maximum Tw. Agricultural land use was significantly positively correlated (α = 0.05) with maximum Tw except during the spring season. Mixed development and Tw were significantly correlated …

Production Allocation Of Reservoir Layers Using Data-Driven Reservoir Modeling, Semaa Alessa Jan 2020

Production Allocation Of Reservoir Layers Using Data-Driven Reservoir Modeling, Semaa Alessa

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The pros of having a commingled layer scheme would be considered high with successful reservoir management. If not, the cons will impact the production drastically as unfortunate consequences may result in reservoir fluids communication, well integrity issues, and production termination. Although the plane requires optimizing production with minimal capital investments and operating expenses, it is an enormous challenge considering commingled layers frequent surveillance and workover requirements.

As the value of information is a decision tool for the surveillance frequency, the oil industry often uses static assumptions as an economical replacement of dynamic measurements such as KH static modeling. However, the …

Confirmation Of Tdm Capabilities In Modeling Compartmentalized Wag Eor, Anthony William Morrow Jan 2020

Confirmation Of Tdm Capabilities In Modeling Compartmentalized Wag Eor, Anthony William Morrow

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Data-Driven Reservoir Modeling (DDRM), commonly referred to as Top-Down Modeling (TDM), is a relatively new and cutting-edge approach to the traditional numerical reservoir modeling and simulation techniques. DDRM uses artificial intelligence and machine learning in tandem to construct full-field models using measured data instead of calculations that refer to equations derived from averaged values and type curves. TDM allows all of the measured data from a field to be combined and used towards generating predictions of the production on a well by well basis for a specific field. Due to TDM not using the traditional physics-based approach, it is subjected …

School: A Community And Environmental Resource, Samantha M. Kelley

Architecture Theses and Projects

Schools play an important role in the lives of children, and can play a larger role in the broader community. Throughout history, schools have existed that have been connected to the environment, whether it was to simply provide children with the opportunity to spend time outside, or to teach students about the natural world. With the state of climate change that exists today, connecting students to the environment is of utmost importance. Students must understand the environment, in order to appropriately understand the threat of climate change, and ultimately take action to combat it.

Schools are an ideal location to …

Geology And Aquifer Sensitivity Of Quaternary Glacial Deposits Overlying A Portion Of The Mahomet Buried Bedrock Valley Aquifer System, Andrew Watson, Eric W. Peterson, Dave Malone, Lisa Tranel Jan 2020

Geology And Aquifer Sensitivity Of Quaternary Glacial Deposits Overlying A Portion Of The Mahomet Buried Bedrock Valley Aquifer System, Andrew Watson, Eric W. Peterson, Dave Malone, Lisa Tranel

Faculty Publications - Geography, Geology, and the Environment

To characterize the distribution of Holocene and Late Quaternary deposits and to assess the contamination potential of the Mahomet Aquifer, surficial geologic and aquifer sensitivity maps of the Gibson City East 7.5-Minute Quadrangle were created. Geologic data, extent, and thickness of the geologic materials were coupled with LiDAR topographic data and analyzed using ESRI’s ArcGIS 10.6.1. Aquifer sensitivity to contamination was calculated based on the depth to the first aquifer unit, aquifer thickness, and the lithology of the aquifer materials. The surficial geologic mapping identified five lithostratigraphic units: the Cahokia Formation, the Equality Formation, the Henry Formation, and the Yorkville …
