Differential Semantics, William Michael Cox Jan 2020

Differential Semantics, William Michael Cox

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Differential Semantics is a theoretical accounting of the semantic complexity found in natural language, particularly that of the academic and literary registers. It addresses natural language semantics in terms of its contribution to the characterization and expression of creative thought, beginning the perception and conceptualization of objective reality, folloby the metacognitive development of idiosemantic connotations in reference to those conceptualizations, and finally, the intuitive process of implication and inference that facilitates the abstraction and communication of thought.

Diversifying The Pipeline: Barriers That Prevent Teachers Of Color From Entering The Profession, Erica L. Avent

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Every year the number of certified teachers entering the teacher workforce is declining across the nation. This decline affects districts across the country, but it especially affects the students that these districts serve. While there is a decline in teachers overall, there is a severe decline in African American teachers. Non- Caucasian students are the largest demographic of students that attend public schools (Cherng & Halpin, 2016). In 2001, forty percent of the students in public education identified as a student of color (Ladson-Billings, 2005a). At the same time, only twelve percent of teachers were non-Caucasian. For those diverse students …

A Tangled Web: Can Arbitration Be The Answer To Resolving Manufactured Credit Event Disputes?, Adam Eisenbud

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

Derivatives are financial contracts whose value is derived from, or reliant upon, another asset. Perhaps the most popular derivatives for retail investors are stock options, whose value is derived from the price of an underlying equity. In recent years, financial institutions have developed several innovative derivative products. These products are typically born out of an unmet need in the financial marketplace. Credit derivatives, for example, were created in order to let financial clients mitigate credit risk. A wellknown type of credit derivative is the credit default swap ("CDS"), a privately held, negotiable bilateral contract that allows a lender to transfer …

Defining Pollinator Health: A Holistic Approach Based On Ecological, Genetic, And Physiological Factors, Margarita M. López-Uribe, Vincent A. Ricigliano, Michael Simone-Finstrom

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Evidence for global bee population declines has catalyzed a rapidly evolving area of research that aims to identify the causal factors and to effectively assess the status of pollinator populations. The term pollinator health emerged through efforts to understand causes of bee decline and colony losses, but it lacks a formal definition. In this review, we propose a definition for pollinator health and synthesize the available literature on the application of standardized biomarkers to assess health at the individual, colony, and population levels. We focus on biomarkers in honey bees, a model species, but extrapolate the potential application of these …

Journal Articles: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Lung cancer can be classified into two main categories: small cell lung cancer (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which are different in treatment strategy and survival probability. The lung CT images of SCLC and NSCLC are similar such that their subtle differences are hardly visually discernible by the human eye through conventional imaging evaluation. We hypothesize that SCLC/NSCLC differentiation could be achieved via computerized image feature analysis and classification in feature space, as termed a radiomic model. The purpose of this study was to use CT radiomics to differentiate SCLC from NSCLC adenocarcinoma. Patients with primary lung cancer, …

A V-Linc Analysis Of Agrifood And Tourism Specialisations In West Cork: Analysis, Impressions And Policies For Future Growth, Brigid Mary Walsh Jan 2020

A V-Linc Analysis Of Agrifood And Tourism Specialisations In West Cork: Analysis, Impressions And Policies For Future Growth, Brigid Mary Walsh

Theses

In recent years industry clusters have become recognised as a common feature of economies across the globe (Pouder and St. John, 1996; Porter, 1998a, 1998b; DTI, 2004; Sölvell, 2008; Ketels and Memedovic, 2008). Advantages associated with clusters include regional economic growth, new firm formation, employment growth, increased innovation and increased prosperity. The advantages associated with clusters are so great that cluster initiatives have become a widely accepted policy tool for regional economic development. As a small open economy, reliant on exports for economic growth, clusters appear to represent an opportunity for Irish industry to increase competitiveness. Theory argues that clusters …

Hybrid Frequency Modulated Silicon Photonic Crystal Laser, Andrei Bakoz Jan 2020

Hybrid Frequency Modulated Silicon Photonic Crystal Laser, Andrei Bakoz

Theses

Silicon photonics takes advantage of the mature complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) infrastructure and processes, and is actively pursued for the implementation of complex optical components and photonic integrated circuits (PICs) at low cost and high volumes. Despite a constant refinement of silicon photonics technology to meet the evolving requirements for applications, the poor light emission ability of silicon remains a constraint. As a result, the most essential building block of an optical system, an efficient light emitter, remains absent in PICs based on silicon. This thesis is focused on study of the potential of an external cavity (EC) hybrid III-V …

Investigating The Nightime Departures Of Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) And The Role Of Social Facilitation, Devon Leigh Mcclain Jan 2020

Investigating The Nightime Departures Of Glaucous-Winged Gulls (Larus Glaucescens) And The Role Of Social Facilitation, Devon Leigh Mcclain

Master's Theses

Daytime behaviors and occupancy patterns of Glaucous-winged Gulls (Larus glaucescens) have been described and can be mathematically predicted based on environmental factors. However, little is known about the nighttime behaviors of Glaucous-winged Gulls. I used trail cameras to study the daytime and nighttime colony occupancy patterns of Glaucous-winged Gulls on a breeding colony on Protection Island, Washington, USA. Early in the breeding season gulls desert the colony en masse during nighttime even after some gulls have initiated clutches. Using acoustic recording units to identify an acoustic cue that signals the onset of the coordinated nightly departures from the colony, I …

Towards An Evaluation Visualization With Color, Megan H. Varnum, Kate M.B. Spencer, Alicia M. Grubb Jan 2020

Towards An Evaluation Visualization With Color, Megan H. Varnum, Kate M.B. Spencer, Alicia M. Grubb

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Goal models help stakeholders understand project scenarios and make decisions. In prior work, we used Tropos evaluation semantics to allow for automated analysis over time; however, formal evaluation labels (e.g., (F, ⊥)) are difficult for users to interpret across a large model. In this paper, we present our work towards understanding the extent to which using colors in goal modeling affects users’ ability to make decisions. Specifically, we are interested in studying if coloring intentions with evaluation information allows for better comparisons of initial states and simulations of future paths. To address this question, we developed a color visualization extension …
