Catgame: A Tool For Problem Solving In Complex Dynamic Systems Using Game Theoretic Knowledge Distribution In Cultural Algorithms, And Its Application (Catneuro) To The Deep Learning Of Game Controller, Faisal Waris
Wayne State University Dissertations
Cultural Algorithms (CA) are knowledge-intensive, population-based stochastic optimization methods that are modeled after human cultures and are suited to solving problems in complex environments. The CA Belief Space stores knowledge harvested from prior generations and re-distributes it to future generations via a knowledge distribution (KD) mechanism. Each of the population individuals is then guided through the search space via the associated knowledge. Previously, CA implementations have used only competitive KD mechanisms that have performed well for problems embedded in static environments. Relatively recently, CA research has evolved to encompass dynamic problem environments. Given increasing environmental complexity, a natural question arises …
Exploring Virtual Worlds With Cultural Algorithms: Ancient Alpena-Amberley Land Bridge, Thomas Joseph Palazzolo
Exploring Virtual Worlds With Cultural Algorithms: Ancient Alpena-Amberley Land Bridge, Thomas Joseph Palazzolo
Wayne State University Dissertations
In this thesis the Land Bridge system (DEEPDIVE) is described. The goal of the project is to use Artificial Intelligence technology to aid Archaeologists in the discovery of ancient prehistoric sites, now underwater. The example used here is the Alpena-Amberley Land Bridge that stretched across Lake Huron from Alpena in Michigan to Amberley in Ontario. During the Ice Age (around 10,000 years ago) it was above water for several thousand years. It was postulated that during that time it was used as a migration pathway for caribou, a major food source then. AI techniques were used to create a virtual …
Improving Predictive Modeling Via Effective Feature Selection And Representation Learning, Xiangrui Li
Improving Predictive Modeling Via Effective Feature Selection And Representation Learning, Xiangrui Li
Wayne State University Dissertations
Predictive modeling (a.k.a. supervised learning) is a machine learning paradigm that has enormous important applications for real-world problems. With the recent surge of data in volume and complexity, effectively capturing the information in input features that is relevant to targets is critical to the success of predictive modeling. Tackling this challenge requires different techniques depending on the specific applications. In this thesis, we develop several methods to improve the performance of predictive models.
Specifically, in the case of small $n$, large $p$ problem, we propose two sparsity-inducing regularization methods for multi-class logistic regression and finite mixture of linear regression, respectively. …

Tiling Optimization For Nested Loops On Gpus, Yuanzhe Li
Wayne State University Dissertations
Optimizing nested loops has been considered as an important topic and widely studied in parallel programming. With the development of GPU architectures, the performance of these computations can be significantly boosted with the massively parallel hardware.
General matrix-matrix multiplication is a typical example where executing such an algorithm on GPUs outperforms the performance obtained on other multicore CPUs. However, achieving ideal performance on GPUs usually requires a lot of human effort to manage
the massively parallel computation resources. Therefore, the efficient implementation of optimizing nested loops on GPUs became a popular topic in recent years. We present our work based …
Advancing Objectives-Oriented Evaluation With Participatory Evaluation Methodology – A Mixed Methods Study, Dustin R. Saalman
Advancing Objectives-Oriented Evaluation With Participatory Evaluation Methodology – A Mixed Methods Study, Dustin R. Saalman
Wayne State University Dissertations
The ability to complete program evaluations of educational programming is typically restricted by the availability of resources, such as time, money and a trained evaluator. A mixed methods study was completed to explore the use of a participatory evaluation program evaluation with the use of the program objectives as an advanced organizer. Participatory evaluation is purported to increase organizational learning and promote evaluative thinking within an organization (Cousins & Whitmore, 1998). Objectives oriented evaluation is an easily understood evaluation method which provides a refined focus program outcome (Madaus & Stufflebeam, 1989). An explanatory sequential design was employed utilizing quantitative findings …

Securing Arm Platform: From Software-Based To Hardware-Based Approaches, Zhenyu Ning
Wayne State University Dissertations
With the rapid proliferation of the ARM architecture on smart mobile phones and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the security of ARM platform becomes an emerging problem. In recent years, the number of malware identified on ARM platforms, especially on Android, shows explosive growth. Evasion techniques are also used in these malware to escape from being detected by existing analysis systems.
In our research, we first present a software-based mechanism to increase the accuracy of existing static analysis tools by reassembleable bytecode extraction. Our solution collects bytecode and data at runtime, and then reassemble them offline to help static analysis …

Lithium – Sulfur (Li-S) batteries have received much attention and considered as a promising candidate for next generation energy storage devices because of their high theoretical energy density (≈2600 Wh kg‒1) and environmental friendliness. However, the uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites in the lithium metal anode and the fatal effect of polysulfide shuttle hinder their practical applications. The formation of dendrites during repeated Li plating/stripping processes results in: reduced Li availability …

Low-Power Wide-Area Network Design, Md Mahbubur Rahman
Wayne State University Dissertations
Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) is an enabling technology for long-range, low-power, and low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) applications. Due to their escalating demand in the IoT/CPS applications, recently, multiple LPWAN technologies have been developed that operate in the cellular/licensed (e.g., 5G, LTE Cat M1, and NB-IoT) and unlicensed/ISM (e.g., LoRa and SigFox) bands. To avoid the crowd in the limited ISM band (where most LPWANs operate) and the cost of the licensed band, we propose a novel LPWAN technology called Sensor Network Over White Spaces (SNOW) by utilizing the TV white spaces. White spaces refer to …

Appreciative Inquiry Impact On University Instructor's Nonverbal Immediacy, Aviva Gordon
Wayne State University Dissertations
The impact of Appreciative Inquiry on university instructor’s Nonverbal Immediacy was explored. Nonverbal Immediacy has been investigated extensively through the perception of students and rarely used as an instructional strategy or to enhance Appreciative Inquiry. Self-determination Theory informed this research with the constructs competence, relatedness, and autonomy inherent in Nonverbal Immediacy and Appreciative Inquiry. An adapted instrument collected data from Communication courses, twice during one semester. The Coronavirus interrupted research, so the second survey was modified for online. The research question could not be answered conclusively. However, both instruments were found reliable, valid and replicable. The recent online nonverbal immediacy …
Real-Time Control Over Wireless Networks, Venkata Prashant Modekurthy
Real-Time Control Over Wireless Networks, Venkata Prashant Modekurthy
Wayne State University Dissertations
Industrial internet of Things (IIoT) are gaining popularity for use in large-scale applications such as oil-field management (e.g., 74×8km2 East Texas Oil-field), smart farming, smart manufac- turing, smart grid, and data center power management. These applications require the wireless stack to provide a scalable, reliable, low-power and low-latency communication. To realize a predictable and reliable communication in a highly unreliable wireless environment, industrial wireless standards use a centralized wireless stack design. In a centralized wireless stack design, a central manager generates routes and a communication schedule for a multi-channel time divi- sion multiple access communication (TDMA) based medium access control …
Causes And Potential Treatment For Altered Muscle Metaboreflex Control Of Ventricular Vascular Interactions In Heart Failure, Joseph Thomas Mannozzi
Causes And Potential Treatment For Altered Muscle Metaboreflex Control Of Ventricular Vascular Interactions In Heart Failure, Joseph Thomas Mannozzi
Wayne State University Dissertations
Muscle Metaboreflex Activation occurs as a result of metabolic accumulation within active skeletal muscle that stimulates type III and IV afferents. This reflex in healthy subjects causes increased ventricular contraction, tachycardia, enhanced central blood volume mobilization, and 2 mediated vasodilation as a means to increase mean arterial pressure and thereby improve perfusion pressure of active skeletal muscle. However, to date no study has evaluated the interaction between the observed changes in ventricular and vascular dynamics or how the reflex impacts contraction relaxation dynamics before and after induction of heart failure Furthermore, no study has evaluated the impact of chronic selective …

Frontier Freemasons: Masonic Networks Linking The Great Lakes To The Atlantic World, 1750-1820, Kevin H. Nichols
Wayne State University Dissertations
The Atlantic World as a source of historical inquiry has generated a great deal of scholarly research. Historians have changed how they look at empires, immigration, and networks of exchange. By making the ocean, and not a land mass or political entity the source of study, scholars have asked different questions and looked the past in new ways. In almost all cases, the Atlantic World ends on the Eastern Seaboard.
This dissertation extends the Atlantic World to the westernmost frontier of the Great Lakes region. Freemasons spread throughout the region during the Seven Years’ War. Military units with lodges attached …
Towards Personalized Medicine: Computational Approaches For Drug Repurposing And Cell Type Identification, Azam Peyvandipour
Towards Personalized Medicine: Computational Approaches For Drug Repurposing And Cell Type Identification, Azam Peyvandipour
Wayne State University Dissertations
The traditional drug discovery process is extremely slow and costly. More than 90% of drugs fail to pass beyond the early stage of development and toxicity tests, and many of the drugs that go through early phases of the clinical trials fail because of adverse reactions, side effects, or lack of efficiency. In spite of unprecedented investments in research and development (R&D), the number of new FDA-approved drugs remains low, reflecting the limitations of the current R&D model.
In this context, finding new disease indications for existing drugs sidesteps these issues and can therefore increase the available therapeutic choices at …
Study Of Grain Growth In Single-Phase Polycrystals, Pawan Vedanti
Study Of Grain Growth In Single-Phase Polycrystals, Pawan Vedanti
Wayne State University Dissertations
Materials with random microstructure are characterized by additional thermodynamic parameters, entropy and temperature of microstructure. It has been argued that there is one more law of thermodynamics: entropy of microstructure decays in isolated systems. This assertion has been checked experimentally for the process of grain growth which showed that entropy of grain structure decays indeed as expected. The equation of state for microstructure entropy has also been studied. In general, entropy of grain microstructure is expected to be a function of grain structure energy and the average grain size. Our experiments suggest that in fact, the equation of state degenerates …

Triflic Acid Mediated Sequential Cyclization Of Ortho-Alkynylarylesters With Ammonium Acetate, Maciej E. Domaradzki, Xiaochen Liu, Jiye Ong, Gyeongah Yu, Gan Zhang, Ariel Simantov, Eliyahu Perl, Yu Chen
Publications and Research
A triflic acid (TfOH) mediated sequential cyclization of ortho-alkynylarylesters and ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) was reported. The reaction took place via a Brønsted acid-mediated intramolecular cyclization of ortho-alkynylarylesters followed by an ammonium acetate participated substitution reaction, forming isoquinolin-1-ones as the major products. Different from most of the known synthetic methods of isoquinolin-1-ones, no metal catalyst was required in the reported reaction. The regioisomers – isoindolin-1-ones were obtained together with isoquinolin-1-ones in a few cases. The intermediate compounds – isochromen-1-ones and isobenzofuran-1-ones were also isolated. The interconversion experiments showed that the regioisomers formed during the Brønsted acid induced …

Optical Potts Machine Through Networks Of Three-Photon Down-Conversion Oscillators, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Mohammad-Ali Miri
Optical Potts Machine Through Networks Of Three-Photon Down-Conversion Oscillators, Mostafa Honari-Latifpour, Mohammad-Ali Miri
Publications and Research
In recent years there has been a growing interest in optical simulation of lattice spin models for applications in classical computing. Here, we propose optical implementation of a three-state Potts spin model by using networks of coupled parametric oscillators with phase tristability. We first show that the cubic nonlinear process of spontaneous three-photon down-conversion is accompanied by a tristability in the phase of the subharmonic signal between three states with 2/3 phase contrast. The phase of such a parametric oscillator behaves like a three-state spin system. Next, we show that a network of dissipatively coupled three-photon down-conversion oscillators emulates the …
Keynesian Uncertainty: The Great Divide Between Joan Robinson And Paul Samuelson In Their Correspondence And Public Exchanges, Harvey Gram, G. C. Harcourt
Keynesian Uncertainty: The Great Divide Between Joan Robinson And Paul Samuelson In Their Correspondence And Public Exchanges, Harvey Gram, G. C. Harcourt
Publications and Research
Joan Robinson and Paul Samuelson found little to agree upon in a correspondence which began in 1946, shortly after the death of Keynes, and ended a year prior to Robinson’s death in 1983. One way to read the correspondence is to keep in mind that Keynesian uncertainty was central to Robinson’s understanding of how capitalist economies function. Samuelson, never impressed by Keynes’s handling of uncertainty, understood capital theory—if not capitalism—in terms of dynamic programming, with its perfect foresight entailments. This is evident throughout his letters to Robinson, although rarely acknowledged in a straightforward way, particularly during the period from 1971 …
Just A Bit Of Physics Can Tell So Much: A Unique Story Of The Start Of The Earth-Moon System, Fred J. Cadieu
Just A Bit Of Physics Can Tell So Much: A Unique Story Of The Start Of The Earth-Moon System, Fred J. Cadieu
Publications and Research
The start of the Earth-Moon system has been studied to show that this was an exceptionally violent event. One result was that Earth became the terrestrial planet with the highest average density. Another result was that Earth acquired enough mass and radioactive elements that it is expected to maintain a molten core region and magnetic field for the expected life of the Earth. Earth alone of the terrestrial planets was then able to develop plate tectonics as a long term energy release mechanism. The dipole magnetic field of the Sun reverses periodically, currently at the rate of about every 11 …

The COVID-19 pandemic has been an enormous global disruption with immense economic, environmental, and social impacts throughout the world. Only world wars and the flu pandemic of 1918 are comparable in the wide range of consequences, including fatalities, over a relatively short period of time. Unfortunately, we can expect other major disruptions to occur in the future. In this editorial, we intend to discern some lessons for the transportation engineering profession that can be learned from the current catastrophe that can help us prepare for future disruptions. We will ignore nontransportation aspects of the pandemic such as the development of …

Differential Semantics, William Michael Cox
Differential Semantics, William Michael Cox
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Differential Semantics is a theoretical accounting of the semantic complexity found in natural language, particularly that of the academic and literary registers. It addresses natural language semantics in terms of its contribution to the characterization and expression of creative thought, beginning the perception and conceptualization of objective reality, folloby the metacognitive development of idiosemantic connotations in reference to those conceptualizations, and finally, the intuitive process of implication and inference that facilitates the abstraction and communication of thought.

Diversifying The Pipeline: Barriers That Prevent Teachers Of Color From Entering The Profession, Erica L. Avent
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every year the number of certified teachers entering the teacher workforce is declining across the nation. This decline affects districts across the country, but it especially affects the students that these districts serve. While there is a decline in teachers overall, there is a severe decline in African American teachers. Non- Caucasian students are the largest demographic of students that attend public schools (Cherng & Halpin, 2016). In 2001, forty percent of the students in public education identified as a student of color (Ladson-Billings, 2005a). At the same time, only twelve percent of teachers were non-Caucasian. For those diverse students …

Derivatives are financial contracts whose value is derived from, or reliant upon, another asset. Perhaps the most popular derivatives for retail investors are stock options, whose value is derived from the price of an underlying equity. In recent years, financial institutions have developed several innovative derivative products. These products are typically born out of an unmet need in the financial marketplace. Credit derivatives, for example, were created in order to let financial clients mitigate credit risk. A wellknown type of credit derivative is the credit default swap ("CDS"), a privately held, negotiable bilateral contract that allows a lender to transfer …

Evidence for global bee population declines has catalyzed a rapidly evolving area of research that aims to identify the causal factors and to effectively assess the status of pollinator populations. The term pollinator health emerged through efforts to understand causes of bee decline and colony losses, but it lacks a formal definition. In this review, we propose a definition for pollinator health and synthesize the available literature on the application of standardized biomarkers to assess health at the individual, colony, and population levels. We focus on biomarkers in honey bees, a model species, but extrapolate the potential application of these …
