A Fortified Extension Of The Aes And Its Implementation, Ashby Mullin
A Fortified Extension Of The Aes And Its Implementation, Ashby Mullin
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
With the advancement of quantum computing (QC), the integrity of cryptography has been called into question. For example, two QC algorithms have been developed that can break asymmetric encryption (i.e., Grover’s, Shor’s), which also poses a threat to symmetric encryption. Asymmetric encryption efforts addressing this threat include lattice-based cryptography, which uses lattice problems to reduce efficiency of cryptanalysis. Symmetric encryption security can be bolstered by increasing the key length, allowing for additional permutations a key could have; known as keyspace. This thesis seeks to expand the keyspace of symmetric encryption in order to create more possibilities. This fortification to the …
A Nevanlinna-Type Counting Function And Pullback Measure, John Nguyen
A Nevanlinna-Type Counting Function And Pullback Measure, John Nguyen
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In this dissertation, we introduce a Nevanlinna-type counting function, $M_{\varphi, \alpha}$. We show that $M_{\varphi, \alpha}$ is subharmonic and continuous on $\theset$ by exhibiting certain properties of the logarithmic potential of the associated pullback measure of two-dimensional Lebesgue measure on $\mathbb{D}$. Different identities of $M_{\varphi, \alpha}$ are presented. A change-of-variable formula calculates precisely the weighted Bergman norms of composition functions in terms of $M_{\varphi, \alpha}$. Certain estimates involving $M_{\varphi, \alpha}$ and the associated pullback measure on Carleson windows and semi-disks are demonstrated. For weighted Bergman space $A^2_\alpha$, we characterize orthogonal self-maps and give the Hilbert Schmidt norm of $C_\varphi$.

A Nomological Network Analysis Of Innovation In Hospitality Education And Industry, Robert H. Rippee
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The development of a theory of innovation for hospitality innovation finds heightened importance due to the COVID-19 Pandemic that has unleashed a devastating and sustained disruption on global hospitality and tourism. The problem for research is that the industry lacks a taxonomy for research on innovation in hospitality. This study addresses the gap in understanding the nomological relationship between innovation constructs and the observable manifestations of innovation in the hospitality industry. This study used an emergent basic qualitative design of a phenomenon through data collected in three phases. Two large samples of literature and a series of focus groups comprised …
Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
Effects Of Wildfire On Plant And Insect Pollinator Communities In The Mojave Desert, Nha Trang Vivian Sam
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The changing fire regime of landscapes across the Mojave Desert has prompted considerable research on its effects on plant community recovery, but it has not been widely studied what effects wildfire may have on native pollinators and the vital ecosystem services they provide. Ecological changes from increased wildfire severity from invasive exotic annual grasses will likely continue influencing pollinator habitats and floral resources. Understanding the effects that wildfires have on pollinators is valuable to make decisions as to whether active management and restoration activities are required to conserve ecologically vital pollinator functions. The intention of this thesis was to examine …

The Processj C++ Runtime System And Code Generator, Alexander Christian Thomason
The Processj C++ Runtime System And Code Generator, Alexander Christian Thomason
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
ProcessJ is a modern Process-Oriented language that builds on previous work from other languages like occam and occam-pi. However, the only readily-available runtime system is built on top of the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This is not a choice made intentionally, but simply out of a lack of other implementations -- until now. This thesis introduces the new C++-based runtime system for ProcessJ, coupled with a new C++ code generator for the ProcessJ compiler. This thesis later examines the implementation details of the runtime system, including the components that make it up. We also examine the ability to cooperatively schedule …

Microbe-Mineral Interactions During Exceptional Fossil Preservation, Stromatolite Formation, And Desert Varnish Growth, Michael Strange
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The Ediacaran to Cambrian Deep Spring Formation consists of mixed carbonate-siliciclastic strata which contain an increasingly complex and biogeographically important biota. Past investigations of the Deep Spring Formation at Mt. Dunfee, Nevada, explored the highly diverse microbialite reefs consisting of a wide range of stromatolite morphologies which exerted significant control on local sedimentation and topography. Early investigations also documented the biomineralizing metazoan Cloudina (an Ediacaran index fossil). However, recent exploration of the area has resulted in the discovery of several new metazoan fossil communities consisting of a diverse assemblage of Ediacaran soft-tissue tubicolous vermiforms (tube fossils) similar to Cloudina. The …

Initial Measurements On The Effect Of Stress On P- And S-Wave Velocities In Olivine, Taryn Traylor
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is well known that elasticity is a key physical property in the determination of the structure and composition of the Earth and provides critical information for the interpretation of seismic data. This study investigates the stress-induced variation in elastic wave velocities, known as the acoustoelastic effect, in San Carlos olivine. A recently developed experimental ultrasonic acoustic system, the Directly Integrated Acoustic System Combined with Pressure Experiments (DIASCoPE), was used with the D-DIA multi-anvil apparatus to transmit ultrasonic sound waves and collect the reflections. We use the DIASCoPE to obtain longitudinal (P) and shear (S) elastic wave velocities from the …

The purpose of this study was to explore the numeracy skills required for safe, quality nursing practice. Using a descriptive mixed methods design, this study answered two research questions: 1) What numeracy skills do nurses perceive as important for providing safe, quality nursing care in the first three years of practice? 2) How do nurses incorporate numeracy skills into daily patient care during the first three years of practice? Early career nurses from a not-for-profit health care organization in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States (n=109) responded to an online survey tool developed by the student investigator that ranked …
Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost
Equivalences Of Determinacy Between Levels Of The Borel Hierarchy And Long Games, And Some Generalizations, Katherine Aimee Yost
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This thesis will be primarily focused on directly proving that the determinacy of Borel games in X^ω is equivalent to the determinacy of certain long open games, from a fragment of ZFC that’s well-known to be insufficient to prove Borel determinacy. The main theorem is a level by level result which shows the equivalence between determinacy of open games in a long tree, [Υ^α], and determinacy of Σ_0^α games in X^ω. In Chapter 9, we mimic the proof used in our main theorem to show that the determinacy of clopen games in the product space X^ω × ω^ω is equivalent …
Developments Of Machine Learning Potentials For Atomistic Simulations, Howard Yanxon
Developments Of Machine Learning Potentials For Atomistic Simulations, Howard Yanxon
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Atomistic modeling methods such as molecular dynamics play important roles in investigating time-dependent physical and chemical processes at the microscopic level. In the simulations, energy and forces, sometimes including stress tensor, need to be recalculated iteratively as the atomic configuration evolves. Consequently, atomistic simulations crucially depend on the accuracy of the underlying potential energy surface. Modern quantum mechanical modeling based on density functional theory can consistently generate an accurate description of the potential energy surface. In most cases, molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory suffer from highly demanding computational costs. On the other hand, atomistic simulations based on …

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Various soil extraction methods are used to indicate plant available P in soil but do not account for soil specific sorption of subsequent applications of P. Thus, estimates of soil phosphorus sorption saturation (PSS; estimated from Mehlich-3 extractable P, Al, and Fe) have been used in conjunction with Mehlich-3 extractable soil phosphorus (M3P) to overcome these limitations. As less is known about the effect of land management on PSS than M3P under field conditions, the effect of field management on PSS was investigated for three pastures over 5 yr (2014-2018). Swine slurry was applied to two fields (Field 1 received …

The Numerical Technique Based On Shifted Jacobi-Gauss-Lobatto Polynomials For Solving Two Dimensional Multi-Space Fractional Bioheat Equations, Hameeda Oda Al-Humedi, Firas Amer Al-Saadawi
Baghdad Science Journal
This article deals with the approximate algorithm for two dimensional multi-space fractional bioheat equations (M-SFBHE). The application of the collection method will be expanding for presenting a numerical technique for solving M-SFBHE based on “shifted Jacobi-Gauss-Labatto polynomials” (SJ-GL-Ps) in the matrix form. The Caputo formula has been utilized to approximate the fractional derivative and to demonstrate its usefulness and accuracy, the proposed methodology was applied in two examples. The numerical results revealed that the used approach is very effective and gives high accuracy and good convergence.

This study was aimed to develop an optimized Dy determination method using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The Plackett-Burman (PB) experimental design was used to select significant factors that affect the electrical current response, which were further optimized using the response surface method-central composite design (RSM-CCD). The type of electrolyte solution and amplitude modulation were found as two most significant factors, among the nine factors tested, which enhance the current response based on PB design. Further optimization using RSM-CCD shows that the optimum values for the two factors were 0.1046 M and 0.1082 V respectively. When the optimum conditions were applied …

A Modified Support Vector Machine Classifiers Using Stochastic Gradient Descent With Application To Leukemia Cancer Type Dataset, Ghadeer Jasim Mohammed Mahdi
Baghdad Science Journal
Support vector machines (SVMs) are supervised learning models that analyze data for classification or regression. For classification, SVM is widely used by selecting an optimal hyperplane that separates two classes. SVM has very good accuracy and extremally robust comparing with some other classification methods such as logistics linear regression, random forest, k-nearest neighbor and naïve model. However, working with large datasets can cause many problems such as time-consuming and inefficient results. In this paper, the SVM has been modified by using a stochastic Gradient descent process. The modified method, stochastic gradient descent SVM (SGD-SVM), checked by using two simulation datasets. …

Deep Learning-Based, Passive Fault Tolerant Control Facilitated By A Taxonomy Of Cyber-Attack Effects, Dean C. Wardell
Deep Learning-Based, Passive Fault Tolerant Control Facilitated By A Taxonomy Of Cyber-Attack Effects, Dean C. Wardell
Theses and Dissertations
In the interest of improving the resilience of cyber-physical control systems to better operate in the presence of various cyber-attacks and/or faults, this dissertation presents a novel controller design based on deep-learning networks. This research lays out a controller design that does not rely on fault or cyber-attack detection. Being passive, the controller’s routine operating process is to take in data from the various components of the physical system, holistically assess the state of the physical system using deep-learning networks and decide the subsequent round of commands from the controller. This use of deep-learning methods in passive fault tolerant control …

Partial Shadow Impact On Loss-Of-Load Probability Of Photovoltaic Power System., M. El-Maghraby, Mohamed Adel El-Sayes
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper studies the shadow impact on the loss-of-load probability, the most significant reliability indices, of the photovoltaic power system (PVPS). A suggested index is derived to reflect the shadow impact, denoted by the "Reductive Index". Novel mathematical model is excecuted to estimate the reduction in the daily output energy of PVPS according to this index and the period of shadow continuity. This reduction results in an equivalent reduction in the solar cells array size. So, the maximum permissible reduction in the solar cells array size can be determined on having an arbitrary loss of-load probability level with its change …

Permanent Pressure Drop Measurements In Converging-Diverging Plain Annuli., A. Bastawissi
Mansoura Engineering Journal
This paper presents the results of a series of experiments on the measurements of pressure losses for turbulent water flow (Re>10,000) in convergent divergent plain annuli. Depending upon the convergence angle and the divergence angle four different annuli were studied. From, these experiments, generalized empirical correlations were deduced to describe pressure losses for turbulent water flow in the convergent portion, in the divergent portion and in the whole annuli. These correlate the experimental data within ± 4%. In general pressure losses for convergent-divergent plain annuli were found to be functions of both the convergence angle and the divergence angle. …

Electro-Optic Satellite Constellation Design Using Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm, Yasin Tamer
Theses and Dissertations
Satellite constellation design is a complex, highly constrained, and multidisciplinary problem. Unless optimization tools are used, tradeoffs must be conducted at the subsystem level resulting in feasible, but not necessarily optimal, system designs. As satellite technology advances, new methods to optimize the system objectives are developed. This study is based on the development of a representative regional remote sensing constellation design. This thesis analyses the design process of an electrooptic satellite constellation with regional coverage considerations using system-level optimization tools. A multi objective genetic algorithm method is used to optimize the constellation design by utilizing MATLAB and STK integration. Cost, …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
© 2020, The Author(s). Turbidity currents are frequently observed in natural and man-made environments, with the potential of adversely impacting the performance and functionality of hydraulic structures through sedimentation and reduction in storage capacity and an increased erosion. Construction of obstacles upstream of hydraulic structures is a common method of tackling adverse effects of turbidity currents. This paper numerically investigates the impacts of obstacle’s height and geometrical shape on the settling of sediments and hydrodynamics of turbidity currents in a narrow channel. A robust numerical model based on LES method was developed and successfully validated against physical modelling measurements. This …

Women's underrepresentation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) impedes progress in solving Africa's complex development problems. As in other regions, women's participation in STEM drops progressively moving up the education and career ladder, with women currently constituting 30% of Africa's STEM researchers. This study elucidates gender-based differences in PhD performance using new survey data from 227 alumni of STEM PhD programs in 17 African countries. We find that, compared to their male counterparts, sampled women had about one less paper accepted for publication during their doctoral studies and took about half a year longer to finish their PhD training. …
