Propofol is a short-acting medication that results in decreased levels of consciousness and is used for general anesthesia. Although it is the most commonly used anesthetic in the world, much remains unknown about the mechanisms by which it induces a loss of consciousness. Characterizing anesthesia-induced alterations to brain network activity might provide a powerful framework for understanding the neural mechanisms of unconsciousness. The aim of this work was to model brain activity in healthy brains during various stages of consciousness, as induced by propofol, in the auditory paradigm. We used the generalized Ising model (GIM) to fit the empirical fMRI …

The History And Application Of Benford's Law, Hunter Clark Dec 2020

The History And Application Of Benford's Law, Hunter Clark

Mathematics Senior Showcase 2020

My Poster is on the history and application of Benford’s law. This is a law that states that the leading digit of a set of numbers will be the number 1 approximately 30% of the time. This is a natural phenomenon and what I mean by that is that in order for this law to hold the numbers cannot be assigned. They must be random as in financial statements or logs. This law does not work on sets that are assigned such as time sheets and addresses. You will see in my poster that the original person to discover this …

A One‐Dimensional Model For Turbulent Mixing In The Benthic Biolayer Of Stream And Coastal Sediments, Stanley B. Grant, Jesus D. Gomez‐Velez, Marco Ghisalberti, Ian Guymer, Fulvio Boano, Kevin Roche, Judson Harvey Dec 2020

A One‐Dimensional Model For Turbulent Mixing In The Benthic Biolayer Of Stream And Coastal Sediments, Stanley B. Grant, Jesus D. Gomez‐Velez, Marco Ghisalberti, Ian Guymer, Fulvio Boano, Kevin Roche, Judson Harvey

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In this paper, we develop and validate a rigorous modeling framework, based on Duhamel's Theorem, for the unsteady one‐dimensional vertical transport of a solute across a flat sediment‐water interface (SWI) and through the benthic biolayer of a turbulent stream. The modeling framework is novel in capturing the two‐way coupling between evolving solute concentrations above and below the SWI and in allowing for a depth‐varying diffusivity. Three diffusivity profiles within the sediment (constant, exponentially decaying, and a hybrid model) are evaluated against an extensive set of previously published laboratory measurements of turbulent mass transfer across the SWI. The exponential diffusivity profile …

Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman Dec 2020

Apneic Oxygenation: An Adjunctive Therapy For Laryngoscopy During Anesthesia Induction, Yaro Hoffman

Doctoral Projects

Endotracheal intubation is an essential component within the skill set of anesthesia providers. Rapid arterial desaturation remains a primary risk factor during laryngoscopy and intubation. The risk for hypoxemia exists because during endotracheal intubation, patients are apneic or hypo-ventilating (Wong et al., 2017). Apneic oxygenation (AO) has been advocated to attenuate hypoxemia during endotracheal intubation (Pavlov et al., 2017).

The aim of this project was to assess for any knowledge deficits regarding AO among anesthesia providers and assess the willingness of these providers to include AO into their current practice. The project investigator conducted an education session involving the …

Interpretation Of Hydrogeologic Data To Support Groundwater Management, Bazile Groundwater Management Area, Northeast Nebraska, 2019—A Case Demonstration Of The Nebraska Geocloud, Christopher M. Hobza, Gregory V. Steele Dec 2020

Interpretation Of Hydrogeologic Data To Support Groundwater Management, Bazile Groundwater Management Area, Northeast Nebraska, 2019—A Case Demonstration Of The Nebraska Geocloud, Christopher M. Hobza, Gregory V. Steele

United States Geological Survey: Publications

Nitrate, age tracer, and continuous groundwater-level data were interpreted in conjunction with airborne electromagnetic (AEM) survey data to understand the movement of nitrate within the Bazile Groundwater Management Area (BGMA) in northeastern Nebraska. Previously published age tracer data and nitrate data indicated vertical stratification of groundwater quality. Younger groundwater sampled within shallow parts of the aquifer had higher concentrations of nitrate, with 70 percent exceeding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level of 10 milligrams per liter. In contrast, groundwater sampled from deeper parts of the aquifer indicated that nitrate concentrations were less than 2 milligrams per liter and …

Effect Of Citric Acid On Slump, Compressive Strength, And Setting Time Of Belitic Calcium Sulfoaluminate Concrete, Israel Aguilar Rosero Dec 2020

Effect Of Citric Acid On Slump, Compressive Strength, And Setting Time Of Belitic Calcium Sulfoaluminate Concrete, Israel Aguilar Rosero

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement has well established advantages related to fast setting time, fast strength gain, long-term strengths, shrinkage, and sustainability. Due to its fast setting and hardening, this type of cement has historically been used to repair concrete structures, highways, and runways. This work provides much needed guidance on establishing mix design criteria for BCSA cement. Guidance is also given on the effects of set retarders on strength, slump, and setting times. Citric acid and a phosphonic acid-based admixture were tested as retarders for different concrete mixtures. Three studies were performed. In the slump study five different water …

Seismic Loading Effects Within Orthogonally Connected Steel Lateral Force Resisting Systems, Alhussin Faraj Aliwan Dec 2020

Seismic Loading Effects Within Orthogonally Connected Steel Lateral Force Resisting Systems, Alhussin Faraj Aliwan

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Steel buildings located within seismically active regions require special design considerations to ensure public safety and prevent collapse during an extreme seismic event. Two commonly used steel systems are special moment frames (SMFs) and buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs). When two seismic systems share a common column in an orthogonal configuration (such as at a building corner), design specifications currently consider a 100+30 rule wherein the shared column is designed for 100% fuse demand in one direction, plus 30% fuse demand from the other direction. While this rule has been shown to be reasonable for elastic building response, a few studies …

Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram Dec 2020

Mechanical And Frictional Behavior Of Textured And Non-Textured Surfaces, Raghuram R. Santhapuram

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tribology is the study of surfaces where two objects are sliding against another. Significant energy is lost due to friction between the sliding surfaces. Therefore, developing or designing surfaces to minimize friction is critical for the durability and reliability of the mechanical components. Several researchers have identified that surface texturing at the nanoscale (nanotexture) would reduce the friction between the contacting surfaces. The nanotextured surfaces have several applications in microelectromechanical systems and nanoelectromechanical systems. This dissertation employs molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the frictional and mechanical response of nanotextured aluminum (Al) and Al/amorphous silicon (a-Si) composite surfaces.

This study determines …

Numerical Simulations Of Directed Self-Assembly Methods In Di-Block Copolymer Films For Efficient Manufacturing Of Nanoscale Patterns With Long-Range Order, Joseph Hill Dec 2020

Numerical Simulations Of Directed Self-Assembly Methods In Di-Block Copolymer Films For Efficient Manufacturing Of Nanoscale Patterns With Long-Range Order, Joseph Hill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Directed self-assembly (DSA) of block copolymers (BCPs) has been shown as a viable method to achieve bulk fabrication of surface patterns with feature sizes smaller than those available through traditional photolithography. Under appropriate thermodynamic conditions, BCPs will self-assemble into ordered micro-domain morphologies, a desirable feature for many applications. One of the primary interests in this field of research is the application of thin-film BCPs to existing photolithography techniques. This “bottom-up” approach utilizes the self-assembled BCP nanostructures as a sacrificial templating layer in the lithographic process.

While self-assembly occurs spontaneously, extending orientational uniformity over centimeter-length scales remains a critical challenge. A …

Cosmogenesis, Complexity, And Neo-Natural Faith In The Context Of Astrobiology, Kelly C. Smith Dec 2020

Cosmogenesis, Complexity, And Neo-Natural Faith In The Context Of Astrobiology, Kelly C. Smith

Publications

It is fair to say that religion, and in particular the ways in which some Christian and Islamic thinkers have again begun to encroach on the domain of science (e.g., global warming, the teaching of evolution), has caused a great deal of consternation within the scientific and philosophical communities. An understandable reaction to these developments is to reject out of hand even the slightest taint of religion in these fields—a position that has now attained the status of orthodoxy, at least in the western world. This is curious on its face, given the fact that religion has clearly provided a …

Creating Order Out Of Chaos? Development Of A Measure Of Perceived Effects Of Communication On The Crisis Organizing Process, Ryan Patrick Fuller, Andrew S. Pyle, Laura Riolli, Amy Mickel Dec 2020

Creating Order Out Of Chaos? Development Of A Measure Of Perceived Effects Of Communication On The Crisis Organizing Process, Ryan Patrick Fuller, Andrew S. Pyle, Laura Riolli, Amy Mickel

Publications

Organizations are important sources of communication during natural-hazard crises. How members of an organization perceive these communications (e.g., creating confusion, causing disorder, providing clarity, and restoring order) influences response and recovery from such a crisis. Using Chaos Theory as a guiding framework, the authors developed a new instrument measuring the perceived effects of an organization’s communication on crisis-organizing processes. Three distinct studies were conducted to assess the reliability and validity of this new instrument: the “Perceived Effects of Communication on the Crisis-organizing Process (PEC-COP)” scale. This one-factor scale can be used by both scholars and practitioners to assess the effects …

The Importance Of Frontier Orbital Symmetry In The Adsorption Of Diiodobenzene On Mos2(0001), Prescott E. Evans, Zahra Hooshmand, Talat S. Rahman, Peter Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

Evidence of a role of frontier orbital symmetry, in the adsorption process of diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001), appears in the huge differences in the rate of adsorption between 1,3-diiodobenzene, 1,2-diiodobenzene and 1,4-diiodobenzene isomers on MoS2. Experiments indicate that the rate of adsorption of 1,3-diiodobenzene on MoS2(0001) is much greater than that of the 1,2-diodobenzene and 1,4-diiodbenzene isomers. As the differences in calculated diiodobenzene isomer-MoS2 system adsorption energies and electron affinities are negligible, frontier orbital symmetry appears to play a significant role in diiodobenzene adsorption on MoS2(0001). The experimental and theory results, in combination, suggest …

Evidence For Electron Energization Accompanying Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Acceleration Regions In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre, Rikard Bodin, Neng Yin, Timothy N. Good, Earl E. Scime Dec 2020

Evidence For Electron Energization Accompanying Spontaneous Formation Of Ion Acceleration Regions In Expanding Plasmas, Evan M. Aguirre, Rikard Bodin, Neng Yin, Timothy N. Good, Earl E. Scime

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report experiments conducted in an expanding argon plasma generated in the inductive mode of a helicon source in the Hot hELIcon eXperiment–Large Experiment on Instabilities and Anisotropies facility. As the neutral gas pressure increases, the supersonic ion acceleration weakens. Increasing neutral pressure also alters the radial profile of electron temperature, density, and plasma potential upstream of the plasma expansion region. Langmuir probe measurements of the electron energy probability function (EEPF) show that heating of electrons at the plasma edge by RF fields diminishes with increasing gas pressure, yielding a plasma with a centrally peaked electron temperature, and flat potential …

Struggling Student Teachers: Interventions For Support And Success, Sheree Moser Dec 2020

Struggling Student Teachers: Interventions For Support And Success, Sheree Moser

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

Teacher shortages in K-12 schools have created unique challenges for teacher preparation programs. University instructors face the task requirements of supporting candidates from a wide variety of backgrounds at the undergraduate and graduate level. While some of these candidates enter higher education programs skilled, eager, and committed, others are less prepared, requiring significant attention to make it through the program. Exams required by state departments of education and minimum grade point averages influence each candidate’s ability to move forward within the program, causing some students to experience additional struggles related to mental health and financial burdens.

The problem of practice …

Combining Implicit Geological Modeling, Field Surveys, And Hydrogeological Modeling To Describe Groundwater Flow In A Karst Aquifer, Fernando M. D’Affonseca, Michael Finkel, Olaf A. Cirpka Dec 2020

Combining Implicit Geological Modeling, Field Surveys, And Hydrogeological Modeling To Describe Groundwater Flow In A Karst Aquifer, Fernando M. D’Affonseca, Michael Finkel, Olaf A. Cirpka

KIP Articles

In three-dimensional (3-D) implicit geological modeling, the bounding surfaces between geological units are automatically constructed from lithological contact data (position and orientation) and the location and orientation of potential faults. This approach was applied to conceptualize a karst aquifer in the Middle Triassic Muschelkalk Formation in southwest Germany, using digital elevation data, geological maps, borehole logs, and geological interpretation. Dip and strike measurements as well as soil-gas surveys of mantel-borne CO 2 were conducted to verify the existence of an unmapped fault. Implicit geological modeling allowed the straightforward assessment of the geological framework and rapid updates with incoming data. Simultaneous …

Generating Adversarial Examples For Recruitment Ranking Algorithms, Anahita Samadi Dec 2020

Generating Adversarial Examples For Recruitment Ranking Algorithms, Anahita Samadi

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

There is no doubt that recruitment process plays an important role for both employers and applicants. Based on huge number of job candidates and open vacancies, recruitment process is expensive, time consuming and stressful for both applicants and companies. In today’s world so many recruitment processes are based on machine learning techniques. Therefore, it is very important to ensure security of these algorithms. Adversarial examples are proposed to examine vulnerability of machine leaning algorithms. Many research studies have been done on evaluating the resistance of artificial intelligence-based systems, in computer vision and text classification, against adversarial examples. However, to the …

Investigation Of The Channel Hot Carrier (Chc) Stressing Effects And Identification Of The Stress-Induced Oxide Traps Leading To Rts In Pmosfets, Tanvir Ahmed Dec 2020

Investigation Of The Channel Hot Carrier (Chc) Stressing Effects And Identification Of The Stress-Induced Oxide Traps Leading To Rts In Pmosfets, Tanvir Ahmed

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Electrical stressing mechanisms are responsible for the generation of stress-induced gate SiO2 defects, in addition to the presence of process-induced oxide traps, in MOSFETs. Random telegraph signal (RTS) can be utilized as a tool to characterize these defects. Channel hot carrier (CHC) stressing is reported to result in the worst degradation in pMOSFETs. However, the effects of CHC on RTS for pMOSFETs are under-reported. The main objective of this work is to investigate the impact of the CHC stressing on pMOSFETs by analyzing RTS. For this reason, the effects of CHC stressing on different RTS parameters are examined. Additionally, responsible …

Semi-Automatic Hand Pose Estimation Using A Single Depth Camera, Giffy Jerald Chris Dec 2020

Semi-Automatic Hand Pose Estimation Using A Single Depth Camera, Giffy Jerald Chris

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

This paper addresses the problem of 3D hand pose annotations using a single depth camera. Although hand pose estimation methods rely critically on accurate 3D training data, creating such reliable training data is challenging and labor intensive. We propose a semi-automatic method for efficiently and accurately labeling the 3D hand key-points in a hand depth video. The process starts by selecting a subset of frames that are representative of all the frames in the dataset and the annotator only provides an estimate of the 2D hand key-points in these selected frames. We use this information to infer the 3D location …

A Survey On Ddos Attacks In Edge Servers, Iftakhar Ahmad

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In modern times, the need for latency sensitive applications is growing rapidly. Cloud computing infrastructure is unable to provide support to such delay sensitive applications. Therefore, a new paradigm called edge computing has emerged. In edge computing various paradigms like Fog, Cloudlet, Mobile Edge Computing, etc. provide real-time, location aware services to users. As a result number of requests are generated for processing in the edge servers. If these edge servers for some reason become unavailable for providing service, users will not be able to perform their delay sensitive or location aware operations. Like other servers in the network, edge …

Incomplete Time Series Forecasting Using Generative Neural Networks, Harshit Tarun Shah Dec 2020

Incomplete Time Series Forecasting Using Generative Neural Networks, Harshit Tarun Shah

Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Dealing with missing data is a long pervading problem and it becomes more challenging when forecasting time series data because of the complex relationships between data and time, which is why incomplete data can lead to unreliable results. While some general-purpose methods like mean, zero, or median imputation can be employed to alleviate the problem, they might disrupt the inherent structure and the underlying data distributions. Another problem associated with conventional time series forecasting methods whose goal is to predict mean values is that they might sometimes overlook the variance or fluctuations in the input data and eventually lead to …
