Evaluation Of Gas Hydrate In Gas Pipeline Transportation, Paschal Ogadi Mokwenye Jan 2020

Evaluation Of Gas Hydrate In Gas Pipeline Transportation, Paschal Ogadi Mokwenye

Theses and Dissertations

Hydrate formation and deposition is an inherent problem in the gas production industry. It causes plugging in pipelines and damages to equipment such as pumps and separators. The safest and most cost-effective strategy in preventing hydrate formation is predicting their formation temperature or pressure. This study involves the development of an empirical model to calculate the hydrate formation temperature by carrying out nonlinear regression on 460 experimental data points using MATLAB software. The values were compared to five other reputable models. The model showed superior accuracy in calculating the reference experimental temperature over the other models. Also, the model produced …

Seeding Date And Genotype Maturity Interactions On Grain Sorghum [Sorghum Bicolor –(L.) Moench] Performance In North Dakota, Kutay Yilmaz

Plant Sciences

Grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] varieties fail to reach maturity in North Dakota’s short and cool growing season. The study objective was to evaluate seeding date and white grain sorghum genotypes. A randomized complete block design study was conducted at Carrington, Oakes, and Prosper, ND, in 2018 and 2019. Genotypes included two commercial hybrids and four open-pollinated genotypes. Reaching heading and anthesis, hybrids required more heat units (GDDs), compared with the open-pollinated genotypes. Highest grain yield was obtained from the first and second seeding dates. Earlier-maturing open-pollinated genotypes maintained yield across seeding dates, whereas yield was reduced at later …

A gold standard for student pairing strategies in a physical education setting has still yet to be discovered and is a widely debated topic in the field. Inclusion and equitable learning environments are areas of emphasis for practitioners while trying to find new ways to elicit these things to benefit students. Interpersonal coordination (IC), a social phenomenon on which this study focused, has direct applications for pairing strategies in physical education. In essence, IC is a state in which two individuals non-consciously mimic each other’s motor patterns. IC was measured between 182 student pairings performing stationary basketball dribbling. Participants included …

Improving Numerical Reproducibility Of Scientific Software In Parallel Systems, Sara Faraji Jalal Apostal Jan 2020

Improving Numerical Reproducibility Of Scientific Software In Parallel Systems, Sara Faraji Jalal Apostal

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, numerical reproducibility has received increased emphasis from the scientific community. Software results that are not reproducible make it difficult to examine the science the software supports. A common source of numerical reproducibility errors in computational science occurs during floating-point arithmetic. Finite precisions and limited storage for floating-point numbers require computers to truncate and round results of some math operations. As a consequence, an approximate value is stored instead of the exact result. One programming idiom that is not always reproducible is the global sum reduction of a distributed array. Changing the number of compute units changes the order array …

Elementary And Secondary Teachers’ Perceptions Of Native American Students’ Academic Performances In North Dakota, Andrew Younkam Mangwa

Theses and Dissertations

Low academic performance among Native American students has been a problem for several decades. Some researchers like Bradbury et al. (2012) have studied issues related to education, but have not targeted elementary and secondary school students’ academic performances. More needs to be done, specifically on Native American students’ academic achievements, to understand the problem and provide data that could potentially ameliorate the situation. Data on state assessments from North Dakota’s Department of Public Instruction has shown low academic performances for students from kindergarten through 12th grades in school districts with high Native American student enrollments (Insights.nd.gov, 2018). This quantitative study …

A Preliminary Study Of Leo To Geo Transfers For Inclination Changes Using Libration Point Orbits, John Shepard

Theses and Dissertations

The required change in velocity for a satellite to change inclination has prompted studies of efficient orbital transfers. Modeling the motion of a spacecraft by including the gravitational forces associated with the Sun, Earth, and Moon has historically proven effective in obtaining new scientific knowledge. In modeling the motion of satellites, the circular restricted three body problem (CR3BP) demonstrates the interactions from two primary bodies and a satellite. The dynamics created about the equilibrium points within the CR3BP can be used to construct low-energy transfers. The invariant manifolds of the libration point orbits (LPO) can be used to create an …

Uncertainty Quantification And Economic Dispatch Models For The Power Grid, Arun Sukumaran Nair

Theses and Dissertations

The modern power grid is constrained by several challenges, such as increased penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), rising demand for Electric Vehicle (EV) integration, and the need to schedule resources in real-time accurately. To address the above challenges, this dissertation offers solutions through data-driven forecasting models, topology-aware economic dispatch models, and efficient optional power flow calculations for large scale grids. Particularly, in chapter 2, a novel microgrid decomposition scheme is proposed to divide the large scale power grids into smaller microgrids. Here, a two-stage Nearest-Generator Girvan-Newman (NGGN) algorithm, a graphicalclustering-based approach, followed by a distributed economic dispatch model, is …

Application Of Formal Specification Technique To Microgrid Representation, Maksym Tkach Jan 2020

Application Of Formal Specification Technique To Microgrid Representation, Maksym Tkach

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis uses formal specification techniques to analyze and model a microgrid. A microgrid is a small, local electrical grid, often supplied by a single generator, that can connect to the larger electrical grid, but can also disconnect from it, going into “island mode.” Thanks to the growth in renewable energy, microgrids represent a growing segment of the electrical power generation domain. And like any member of the domain they are safety-critical systems, meaning that even a small mistake in their implementation risks damage to life and property.Formal specification is a way to abrogate the risks of safety critical systems …

Aqueous Imbibition With Enhanced Contact Area Approaches To Extract Oil From The Bakken Formation, Jin Zhang Jan 2020

Aqueous Imbibition With Enhanced Contact Area Approaches To Extract Oil From The Bakken Formation, Jin Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The techniques of horizontal wells and hydraulic fracturing enable oil production from low-permeable shale, sandstone and carbonate rock formations. However, the extremely low permeability and porosity properties lead a sharp declination of oil production and a low oil recovery factor (typically, 5-15% of original oil in place) as reservoir pressures dropping. Surfactant EOR (enhanced oil recovery) has been considered as one of the best options for geological challenging formations. In our previous studies, we developed a method using surfactant formulation spontaneous imbibition to stimulate the oil recovery from tight formations through wettability alteration and the interfacial tension (IFT) reduction. However, …

Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery In Tight And Shale Reservoirs Using Surfactants And Supercritical Co2, Shaojie Zhang Jan 2020

Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery In Tight And Shale Reservoirs Using Surfactants And Supercritical Co2, Shaojie Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

The tight and shale oil reservoirs have been becoming increasingly important energy resources. However, the flow and storage mechanisms of oil in tight and shale reservoirs are still ambiguous. The inorganic pores, organic pores, and kerogen skeleton in shale oil reservoirs can store hydrocarbons. Besides, the oil recovery of tight and shale oil reservoirs is extremely low even with the assistance of hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. The surfactants and CO2 are commonly used to enhance the oil recovery in tight and shale reservoirs. A comprehensive review of CO2 and surfactants EOR is shown in Chapter Ⅱ.

The spontaneous imbibition …
