Exploring The Cultural Identity And School Efficacy Of Students Through The Lens Of Digital Storytelling, Rachael Mack
Exploring The Cultural Identity And School Efficacy Of Students Through The Lens Of Digital Storytelling, Rachael Mack
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Digital storytelling is a modern storytelling method that uses videos, images, and audio to share knowledge, wisdom, values, and personal stories from the point of view of the creator in a 2-8-minute first person narrative. This study explored the cultural identity and school efficacy of students through the lens of digital storytelling. This mixed-methods study consisted of both qualitative and quantitative measures. A survey was conducted using the In-Group Identification Scale, the Multidimensional Inventory of Black Identity, and the School Efficacy Scale as the quantitative measures, and qualitative data was generated from the transcription and analysis of the digital storytelling …

How Young Adult Literature Better Informs Canonical Literature In The 9th Grade English Language Arts Classroom, Amber Bernozzi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this qualitative critical discourse analysis study was to determine if there was a benefit to using a young adult adaptation of a canonical piece to increase student comprehension in the 9th grade English-Language Arts classroom. The use of young adult literature in the secondary classroom is a prevalent topic that continues to circulate amongst educators and researchers. This research study addresses how canonical literature is far removed from the current set of twenty-first century students and its disconnect in the classroom. This study sought to discover student thoughts and perceptions on a specific set of text pairings …
Sex, Gender, Sexual Assault, And Rape On The Red Pill: A Thematic And Linguistic Analysis, Walker Talton
Sex, Gender, Sexual Assault, And Rape On The Red Pill: A Thematic And Linguistic Analysis, Walker Talton
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The digital space has offered fertile new territory to connect with like-minded individuals and discuss anything and everything. This has resulted in the creation of the Manosphere, a collection of men concerned about the state of men and masculinity and how society views and treats men. One of the places online this community has found a home is the popular website Reddit, which offers the ability to create individual pages in which communities can form around and discuss and share information on almost any topic they desire. This study aimed to investigate the ways in which one community on Reddit, …
Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison
Transformation Of The St. Clair Maritime Cultural Landscape From The Seventeenth To The Twentieth Centuries, Daniel Frederick Harrison
Wayne State University Dissertations
The St. Clair system—a river, delta and lake between Lake Huron and the Detroit River—offers significant opportunities to study long-term maritime landscape formation, and to preserve a unique resource. Few maritime landscapes in the Great Lakes remain so deeply and clearly inscribed by successive cultures. This permits both focused and comprehensive analyses and comparisons of the ideologies, technologies and practices of indigenous, colonial, and modern societies as each created its unique place in the environment through four processes: cognition, dwelling, movement, and representation. The socially-conditioned perception of environmental resources and constraints, and resulting strategies to exploit the former while minimizing …
Conflicts Over Local Beliefs: "Feudal Superstitions" As Intangible Cultural Heritage In Contemporary China, Ziying You
Conflicts Over Local Beliefs: "Feudal Superstitions" As Intangible Cultural Heritage In Contemporary China, Ziying You
All Faculty Articles
This article addresses conflicts over local beliefs in both discourse and practice in contemporary China, especially in the process of protecting local beliefs as China’s national intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in the twenty-first century. These local beliefs were stigmatized as “feudal superstitions” in revolution- ary China and were revived in public since the reform era started in 1978. With influence from UNESCO, the project to protect ICH has spread all over China since 2004, and many local beliefs are promoted as China’s national ICH. Drawing on my ethnographic case study of “receiving aunties (Ehuang and Nüying)” in Hongtong County, Shanxi …

¡Mi Hijo Es Mío, Puñales! Excessive Paternal Devotion In Benito Pérez Galdós’S Torquemada Novels, Gabrielle Miller
¡Mi Hijo Es Mío, Puñales! Excessive Paternal Devotion In Benito Pérez Galdós’S Torquemada Novels, Gabrielle Miller
Decimonónica
While Margaret Mead’s provocative statement that “motherhood is a biological necessity, but fatherhood is a social invention” may be inherently problematic, it successfully underlines “the role of the father” as a culturally-inscribed rather than universal construct (cited in Garbarino 13). In industrialized Western countries of the nineteenth century, the dominant gender ideology of the so-called separate spheres defined the “good father” as a “distant breadwinner” who, as unequivocal family patriarch, provided for his family’s material needs through monetarily-compensated work (Lupton and Barclay 14). Unsurprisingly, the dominant model of fatherhood that emerged in Spain in the second half of the nineteenth …
Lifting The Curtain On The Nation: The Theater And Nation-Building In El Ideal De Un Calavera, Cody Hanson
Lifting The Curtain On The Nation: The Theater And Nation-Building In El Ideal De Un Calavera, Cody Hanson
Decimonónica
Alberto Blest Gana, in his 1863 novel El ideal de un calavera, organizes and presents crafted images of chilenidad that are so pervasive they assume intrinsic value and take precedence over the plot narrative. Blest Gana (1830-1920) is well known for his realistic accounts of Chilean celebrations, customs, and pastimes. He consistently integrates detailed expository accounts into his writing that emphasize Chile’s unique culture. In El ideal de un calavera, for example, rather than organize themselves in an orderly line at the entrance of the theater, Chileans form an apretura, a practice in which patrons jockey for …
Tool-Assisted Induction Of Subregular Languages And Mappings, Alena Aksenova
Tool-Assisted Induction Of Subregular Languages And Mappings, Alena Aksenova
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The last decade was very fruitful in the field of subregular research. New classes of subregular languages and mappings were uncovered for modeling natural language phenomena, and new learning algorithms were developed for these classes. The subregular approach has been successfully applied to phonotactics (Heinz, 2010), rewrite processes in phonology and morphology (Chandlee, 2014), and even syntactic constraints over tree structures (Graf, 2018). However, the rapid pace of the theoretical research has not been matched when it comes to engineering considerations. Many of the proposed learning algorithms have not been implemented yet, and as a result, their performance on concrete …

Diversity And Equality In Honours And Awards Programs – Steps Towards A Fair Representation Of Membership, Mary Anne Holmes, Latoya Myles, Blair Schneider
Diversity And Equality In Honours And Awards Programs – Steps Towards A Fair Representation Of Membership, Mary Anne Holmes, Latoya Myles, Blair Schneider
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Honours and awards bestowed by professional societies recognize and reward members who have advanced the goals and values of that society. All too often, however, awards reflect a small network of people who know about the awards and participate in the process. This network works wonderfully for the people lucky enough to be in it, but typically neglects the full range and breadth of scholarship and service within the society. We represent a combined 15C years’ experience on the honours’ committee for a large professional society (the American Geophysical Union) and here offer strategies to increase the representation of honourees.Women …
Automatic Distinction Between Twitter Bots And Humans, Jeremiah Stubbs
Automatic Distinction Between Twitter Bots And Humans, Jeremiah Stubbs
All Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Weak artificial intelligence uses encoded functions of rules to process information. This kind of intelligence is competent, but lacks consciousness, and therefore cannot comprehend what it is doing. In another view, strong artificial intelligence has a mind of its own that resembles a human mind. Many of the bots on Twitter are only following a set of encoded rules. Previous studies have created machine learning algorithms to determine whether a Twitter account was being run by a human or a bot. Twitter bots are improving and some are even fooling humans. Creating a machine learning algorithm that differentiates a bot …

Background: Reading acquisition varies between languages, as languages differ in terms of phonology and orthography. Orthographic knowledge is demonstrated to be crucial in literacy acquisition in most orthographies. The literature on acquisition of orthographic knowledge has focused more on alphabetic orthographies and less is understood in alphasyllabary Kannada language. The present study aimed to understand the akshara knowledge acquisition by measuring akshara identification accuracy and reaction time in typically developing Kannada medium primary school children. Methods: The study consisted of 315 typically developing children, 45 each from Grade I through Grade VII between the age range of 5 years 6 …

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the quality and readability of English-language Internet information related to vestibular disorders. METHODS: A cross-sectional website search using three keywords (nausea, dizziness, and vertigo) in five country-specific versions …
Strengthening Intergenerational Bonds Through The Practice Of Learning And Mission At First Baptist Church Valdese, Nc, Joshua Lail
Doctor of Ministry Projects
An education program was designed to encourage intergenerational unity among a mixed group of youth and adults at First Baptist Church in Valdese, NC. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed to determine the effectiveness of the program on the intergenerational experimental group. There was movement toward intergenerational unity from the pre-test to post-test in the experimental group. Insights were learned from the data, particularly that there were different rates of growth between the youth and adults, and the observation that participants may have liked the idea of working together more than actually working together. The younger participants …

Expectation Versus Reality: Star Trek, Nyota Uhura, And The Female Role, Cecelia Otto-Griffiths
All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects
In a media saturated world, there is an abundance of stereotypes perpetuated for women. Since the late 1960’s, however, Star Trek has been one example of how television and film can challenge stereotypes and what is considered normal. This study sought to understand the extent of change in how women’s physical and role representations are presented through the artifact of Lt. Uhura in the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture and the 2016 film Star Trek: Beyond. Using feminist theory as a lens to conduct a content analysis of these films, this study used frequently identified “feminine” characteristics in …

Toward A Critical-Pbl: Centering A Critical Consciousness In The Middle Grades, Jaclyn Caires-Hurley, Margarita Jimenez-Silva, Rachel Harrington
Faculty Publications - College of Education
The dual pandemic of 2020 that includes racism and COVID-19 demonstrates the need for students to become socially responsible and critically conscious world citizens. Students in the middle grades are developing their sense of identity while concomitantly trying to understand the complex world around them. While many teachers understand the need for critical pedagogy, many still struggle to find time to teach rigorous content standards while integrating social justice education. In this article, we propose the four pillars of Critical-Problem Based Learning (Critical-PBL). Using critical standards, critical problems, critical content, and critical discourse, we offer a framework to support teachers …
Constitutionalizing Nature's Law: Dignity And The Regulation Of Biotechnology In Switzerland, James Toomey
Constitutionalizing Nature's Law: Dignity And The Regulation Of Biotechnology In Switzerland, James Toomey
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The Swiss Constitution was amended by referendum in 1992 to include two unique provisions: Article 119, which imposes strict limits on genetic and reproductive technologies in humans in order to protect ‘human dignity’, and Article 120, which commits the Swiss federal government to limiting genetic technologies in non-human species on the basis of the ‘dignity of the creature’. This article analyzes the role of ‘dignity’ as a limit on biotechnologies in the Swiss constitutional order. It concludes that the understanding of dignity the constitution embraces codifies a contestable metaphysical theory of value at the constitutional level. Specifically, the Swiss constitutional …
Fuzzy Logistic Regression For Detecting Differential Dna Methylation Regions, Tarek M. Bubaker Bennaser
Fuzzy Logistic Regression For Detecting Differential Dna Methylation Regions, Tarek M. Bubaker Bennaser
Doctoral Dissertations
“Epigenetics is the study of changes in gene activity or function that are not related to a change in the DNA sequence. DNA methylation is one of the main types of epigenetic modifications, that occur when a methyl chemical group attaches to a cytosine on the DNA sequence. Although the sequence does not change, the addition of a methyl group can change the way genes are expressed and produce different phenotypes. DNA methylation is involved in many biological processes and has important implications in the fields of biomedicine and agriculture.
Statistical methods have been developed to compare DNA methylation at …
The Development Of A Project Typology And Selection Tool To Improve Decision-Making In Sustainable Projects, Rakan Alyamani
The Development Of A Project Typology And Selection Tool To Improve Decision-Making In Sustainable Projects, Rakan Alyamani
Doctoral Dissertations
"Decision-making in sustainable projects is a complex and challenging process, especially during the initiating and planning phases of project development, due to influence from several external factors, as well as the uncertain environments surrounding their creation. It is essential to improve the decision-making process in sustainable projects during these two phases by relying on strong decision-making tools. The first contribution in this work identifies gaps in the literature of how institutionalization can impact sustainable projects through the effects of institutional isomorphisms from institutional theory. This helps decision makers better understand the relationship between institutionalization and sustainable projects. The second contribution …

Cultivating Quality: Ten Tools Managers Can Use To Get Long-Term Committed Shareholders, Lawrence A. Cunningham
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
Special Note: This Article is part of The Quality Shareholder Initiative at the Center for Law, Economics and Finance (C-LEAF), at The George Washington University Law School, Prof. Lawrence A. Cunningham, Faculty Director. Considerable effort goes into forging tools a corporation can use to shape its shareholder base. Much effort is geared toward promoting long investor time horizons, presumed to be a valuable but rare appetite among many shareholders. Less attention has been focused on promoting greater commitment, though attracting shareholders willing to stake large percentages of their portfolio in a given company’s stock may prove way more valuable than …
Investigating The Relationship Between Individual Differences And Island Sensitivity, Catherine Pham, Lauren Covey, Alison Gabriele, Saad Aldosari, Robert Fiorentino
Investigating The Relationship Between Individual Differences And Island Sensitivity, Catherine Pham, Lauren Covey, Alison Gabriele, Saad Aldosari, Robert Fiorentino
Department of Linguistics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
It is well-attested that native speakers tend to give low acceptability ratings to sentences that involve movement from within islands, yet the source of island effects remains an active debate. The grammatical account posits that island effects result from syntactic constraints on wh-movement, whereas the resource-limitation view posits that low ratings emerge due to processing-related constraints on the parser, such that islands themselves present processing bottlenecks. The current study addresses this debate by investigating the relationship between island sensitivity and individual differences in cognitive abilities, as it has been argued that the two views make distinct predictions regarding whether a …
Color-Blind But Not Color-Deaf: Accent Discrimination In Jury Selection, Jasmine Gonzales Rose
Color-Blind But Not Color-Deaf: Accent Discrimination In Jury Selection, Jasmine Gonzales Rose
Faculty Scholarship
Every week brings a new story about racialized linguistic discrimination. It happens in restaurants, on public transportation, and in the street. It also happens behind closed courtroom doors during jury selection. While it is universally recognized that dismissing prospective jurors because they look like racial minorities is prohibited, it is too often deemed acceptable to exclude jurors because they sound like racial minorities. The fact that accent discrimination is commonly racial, ethnic, and national origin discrimination is overlooked. This Article critically examines sociolinguistic scholarship to explain the relationship between accent, race, and racism. It argues that accent discrimination in jury …

Contractual Incapacity And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Sean M. Scott
Contractual Incapacity And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Sean M. Scott
Faculty Scholarship
The doctrine of contractual incapacity allows people with mental disabilities to avoid their contractual liability. Its underlying premise is that the law has an obligation to protect people with such disabilities both from themselves and from unscrupulous people who would take advantage of them; mental incapacity provides this protection by rendering certain contracts unenforceable. The Disability Rights Movement ("DRM"), however, has challenged such protective legal doctrines, as they rest on outmoded concepts about people with mental disabilities.
This essay argues that the mental incapacity doctrine undermines the goals of the DRM and the legislative goals of the Americans with Disabilities …
