Translanguaging In Community College English As A Second Language: Exploring A Rubric For Teaching During The Covid-19 Pandemic, Debra Hills
CGU Theses & Dissertations
English language learners represent one of the fastest growing, and diverse, group of students in California community colleges. The successful adoption of translanguaging to English as a second language (ESL) classrooms may provide an equitable way for teachers to ensure students reach their academic goals and foster bilingual identity development. With the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic comes new challenges for ensuring continued access to learning for ESL students. The pandemic also calls into question the traditional norms of language teaching as students and teachers must move to digital spaces to learn and teach. Using a theoretical framework rooted in …

Cultural Social Capital Impact For Male Latino Students At The Community College, Lisa Christine Nashua
CGU Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to apply Yosso’s community cultural wealth framework to understand the role of cultural social capital on the successful attainment of the higher education goals of Latino male students at the Community College while identifying the best methods to increase engagement including creating a sense of belonging. The researcher conducted 24 semi-structured face to face interviews with 20 Latino male students enrolled full or part time, three tenured faculty members and one staff member at a single community college in southern California. Findings revealed that the important role the development of cultural social capital on …
Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi
Ways, Proofs, And The Intelligibility Of God: Thomas Aquinas’S Five Ways As Leading Into The Intelligibility Of An Existing God, Bruce John Paolozzi
CGU Theses & Dissertations
There is some question about how to understand Thomas Aquinas’s five ways of demonstrating that God exists. Often philosophers and theologians portray Thomas as a strict Aristotelian rationalist with a strong emphasis on syllogistic epistemology. Against this view a competing existential, metaphysical, and theological understanding of the five ways has been gradually gaining ground, beginning in the early 20th century, due to the work of existential Thomists such as Etienne Gilson, Jacques Maritain, and Joseph Owen. This understanding has been expanded more recently in the work of John Wippel and others. The rise of the existential view has led to …
Factors Influencing The Retention And Graduation Of Latino Male Students: Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Freddie Sánchez
Factors Influencing The Retention And Graduation Of Latino Male Students: Four-Year Hispanic-Serving Institutions, Freddie Sánchez
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative dissertation explores factors that contribute to first-generation Latino male retention and graduation at California State Universities (CSU) that are also designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI). This study is informed by the main research question: How do Latino males use their own Community Cultural Wealth for their retention while enrolled at southern California CSUs designated as Hispanic-Serving Institutions? Utilizing Yosso (2005) Community Cultural Wealth model as the Theoretical framework guiding the research study, the study explores how participants used the various forms of capital: Aspirational, Familial, Linguistic, Navigational, Resistant and Social to successfully graduate. A phenomenological design was used …
Unorthodox Support: How Mentors Of Undocumented Immigrant Students Leverage Community Cultural Wealth To Pave The Way For College Success, Keisha Chin Goosby
Unorthodox Support: How Mentors Of Undocumented Immigrant Students Leverage Community Cultural Wealth To Pave The Way For College Success, Keisha Chin Goosby
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This qualitative study explored the mentoring experiences of undocumented immigrant students (UIS) who have graduated from a four-year college or university in the United States. There has been an increase in research about undocumented immigrant students and there is an established body of literature about mentoring. However, there are few studies which focus on the mentoring of undocumented immigrant students. In addition, this study appears to be the first to focus primarily on the mentors of those students. The literature review establishes the multiple challenges that UIS face and their need for sustained support from capable mentors. Further, a prior …
The Revealing Love Of God: A Systematic, Hermeneutic, And Phenomenological Approach To Thinking Well About The Love Of God, Daniel L. Nelson
The Revealing Love Of God: A Systematic, Hermeneutic, And Phenomenological Approach To Thinking Well About The Love Of God, Daniel L. Nelson
CGU Theses & Dissertations
“The medium is the message:” theological reflections on the idea that God is love. I am proposing that the idea of the self-revelational nature of God’s being functions, among other ways, rhetorically, such that the content of revelation (God’s love) determines the rhetorical mode of its communication (giving orders, inviting, begging, etc.). The three aspects of rhetoric that Kenneth Burke emphasizes in A Rhetoric of Motives—the use of identification, that it is addressed and, as such, is convincing (persuasive)—are examined in terms of revelation. Chapter one seeks to clear the way for what is commonly understood as special revelation by …

Adapting The Ipa Systems Of Korean Diction To Classical Vocal Method: A Critical Study, Clara N. Lee
Adapting The Ipa Systems Of Korean Diction To Classical Vocal Method: A Critical Study, Clara N. Lee
CGU Theses & Dissertations
While the IPA is helpful in learning Korean diction, it is not sufficient when applied to classical singing techniques, especially for non-native Korean speakers. To be able to clearly distinguish the ambiguity of sounds of the language, using proper and accurate phonetic symbols are necessary. The author compares speaking and singing in the Korean language by analyzing the contrast of its phonetics and articulating positions and then phonologically describes the IPA symbols. Both singing and speaking are forms of phonation and communication, and the same IPA symbols are often used for both singing and speaking. However, the phonation circumstances and …
A Humanizing Pedagogy And Curriculum: Lessons From Chicanx/Latinx Student Testimonios In A High School Ethnic Studies Classroom, Jorge Alberto López
A Humanizing Pedagogy And Curriculum: Lessons From Chicanx/Latinx Student Testimonios In A High School Ethnic Studies Classroom, Jorge Alberto López
CGU Theses & Dissertations
In this dissertation, I draw on the experiential knowledge of students in a high school ethnic studies classroom at Eastside High School in Los Angeles to distill concrete lessons for educators to bring humanizing teaching approaches the classroom, teacher-student relationships, and their students’ lives. Using a methodological approach grounded in testimonios , pláticas , and encuentros , and drawing on my seventeen years of ethnic studies-informed classroom teaching experience, I argue that the humanizing pedagogical project is an ongoing process—one that is at times contested and contradictory and one that is fundamentally grounded in reciprocity, relationality, and vulnerability. Building on …
Portrait Of A Heretic: The Development Of Walter Kaufmann's Philosophy Of Religion, Duncan William Gale
Portrait Of A Heretic: The Development Of Walter Kaufmann's Philosophy Of Religion, Duncan William Gale
CGU Theses & Dissertations
This is a study of the philosophy of religion of Walter Kaufmann, specifically how he found his unique philosophical voice during the first decade of his career. It begins with Kaufmann’s work as a translator and commentator on Friedrich Nietzsche, examining the ways his interpretation of Nietzsche’s philosophy both informs and anticipates his own philosophical perspective. Attention is also given to Kaufmann’s work on Hegel and existentialism as it relates to his development. After these considerations, Kaufmann’s first original work of philosophy, Critique of Religion and Philosophy , is examined in detail, beginning with his appraisal of the field of …
Beyond Language: Critical And Sustainable Sociocultural Competence In A Dual Language Program, Verónica González
Beyond Language: Critical And Sustainable Sociocultural Competence In A Dual Language Program, Verónica González
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Despite the ideological controversies and political backlash that surround the field of bilingual education in the United States, current research indicates a growing interest in dual language (DL) programs—an additive bilingual education model. However, this growing interest has been accompanied by inequities in the implementation of DL programs that negatively affect minoritized students. One recommendation is for DL programs to center equity through sociocultural competence—the third goal of DL education (Howard et al., 2018). Through an analysis of administrator and teacher interviews, school documents, and field observations, this single case study examines educators’ ideologies and practices in regards to sociocultural …

Addressing Each Other’S Eyes Directly: From Adriana Cavarero’S “Relating Narratives” To Elena Ferrante’S Intersectional Ethics Of Narrative Relations, Loredana Di Martino
Italian and Italian Studies: Faculty Scholarship
Narratives that provide honest portrayals of women’s relationships appear to be very popular at the moment. This may seem as nothing new since feminist authors have recast female friendship as a potential site of subversion at least since the seventies. However, as critics have highlighted, it is particularly since the eighties and nineties that representations of ambivalent female relations have become more prominent, mostly as a result of the influence of intersectional and decolonial theories such as those pioneered, respectively, by Audre Lorde and María Lugones. This article contextualizes Elena Ferrante’s work within the current transnational tendency of developing an …

Aquestion was asked of me by the inimitable Nike Imoru, a North Londoner raised in Nigeria, an exceptional casting director, and the first woman and person of color to gain a tenured position in the Theatre Department at Hull in the UK (when she was only twenty-eight.) The question: What is your understanding of the masculine in America? Nike’s presence is water from a deep well. Her direction elicited the following.

Autobiographical Storytelling in English Language Arts Instruction: Fostering Literacy and Social Emotional Development in the Elementary English Language Learner Classroom
Elysia Lin, with Prof. Mary Boyes, VCU Honors College
Given the changing cultural and linguistic profile of the United States classroom, culturally relevant teaching strategies that address individual learning needs and establish meaningful learning contexts have become increasingly important for student success. The integration of autobiographical student narratives into traditional English language instruction via storytelling represents a promising area of educational research. The present study sought to investigate the extent to which storytelling facilitates inclusivity, fosters positive social-emotional development, enhances …
Regularity And Variation In Japanese Recipes: A Comparative Analysis Of Cookbook, Online, And User-Generated Sub-Registers, Michiko Kaneyasu, Minako Kuhara
Regularity And Variation In Japanese Recipes: A Comparative Analysis Of Cookbook, Online, And User-Generated Sub-Registers, Michiko Kaneyasu, Minako Kuhara
World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
This paper investigates the similarities and differences between three sub-registers of Japanese recipe texts: cookbook recipes, online commercial recipes written/edited by professionals, and online usergenerated recipes. Past studies on Japanese recipes do not distinguish different sub-registers, and they tend to focus on a single feature. The present study of the sub-registers examines a group of frequently appearing linguistic features and uncovers functional links between observed features and situational characteristics. The comparative perspective contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the Japanese recipe language as well as universal and language-specific aspects of register variation. Shared traits among the three sub-registers are …
Opening Ceremony: A Writing Practice Towards Queer Futurity, Laura Marie Marciano
Opening Ceremony: A Writing Practice Towards Queer Futurity, Laura Marie Marciano
Open Access Dissertations
Opening Ceremony is a collection of poems in completion of a creative dissertation in poetry at the University of Rhode Island. The book is a five-year writing practice towards queer futurity and considers, both in form and content, how poems can transgress hierarchal binaries and create exit discourse. The poems use lyric imagery, reference to color and material, space on the page, and colloquial language, to write the bodies, aesthetics, and experiences of contemporary queer life. It is a practice of not rallying against hetero-patriarchy, capitalism and white supremacy, which may restabalize binaries, but rather, giving homage to that which …

Ecologies Of Materiality And Aesthetics In British Modernist War-Time Literature, 1890-1939, Molly Volanth Hall
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines landscape representation in English novels, memoirs, manifestos, and poetry between 1890 and 1939 responding to World War I and the larger dynamics of imperialism of which it is a part. Analyzing how such works reflect and reshape dominant environmental perception during the early twentieth century’s marked acceleration of mass warfare and ecological change, it reads for the way images of mud, stone, land, and soil—collected under the term base matters—express the entanglement of environmental and national structures of feeling ranging from fear to dissociation. These base matters dominate characters’ and authors’ changing perception of the material world …

Paternalism Or Gender-Neutrality?, Stephen J. Ware
Connecticut Law Review
The strong and widely accepted reasons for using gender-neutral language presumptively apply to the gendered word paternalism and its gender-neutral counterpart, parentalism. With these reasons in mind, this Article’s thesis is that legal scholars should begin with a presumption for using the gender-neutral word parentalism, while using paternalism only when emphasizing the important relevance of gender or otherwise trying to convey a gendered meaning. Accordingly, many legal scholars define paternalism in an expressly gendered way—such as “the institutionalization of male dominance,” or an “ideology [that] teaches men to minimize women’s agency”—or fittingly use paternalism to describe an attitude especially characteristic …

The Human Right To Education: Definition, Research And Annotated Bibliography, Jootaek Lee
Emory International Law Review
The role and function of education cannot be emphasized enough. Education enhances and develops human abilities, consciousness, identity, integrity, potential, and even power. However, no literature or other instrument comprehensively and consistently defines education. This inconsistent approach to the human right to education is more harmful than beneficial. Considering a wide variety of international instruments and literature, this Article will seek to provide a comprehensive and consistent definition of the human right to education. This Article will also provide an annotated bibliography of various sources which can facilitate the research of scholars and practitioners in this field. A list of …
Educators' Storybook Reading Practices, Attitudes Toward Adopting Dialogic Reading, And Child Language Status In An Inclusive Early Learning Environment, Ruth Gorlin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this descriptive study is to characterize the natural context of routine storybook reading in an inclusive early learning environment by looking at educator variables and child language status. Early childhood researchers and scholars have well documented the importance of oral language development in young children for future reading and academic success. Evidence-based research literature advocates engaging young children in high quality interactive reading experiences, such as Dialogic Reading (Whitehurst, 2005), as effective means to facilitate young children's oral language development and emergent literacy acquisition. By understanding the features of natural story-time routines, researchers, speech-language pathologists, and early …

Puerto Rico After Hurricane Maria: Responses To Trauma And Constructing A New Life In Central Florida, Angela Vergara
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
On September 20th, 2017, Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island of Puerto Rico causing devastating results. An Island with a history of decades of economic recession, inadequate infrastructure, and a negative effect of a century of colonial rule by the United States, Hurricane Maria unquestionably intensified the catastrophic circumstances in Puerto Rico. (Cons 2017; Torres 2018; Gay et al 2019). The aftermath of Hurricane Maria left thousands homeless and without basic resources in the Island. The study examines the effects of disparate social factors on individual responses to trauma before, during, and after the disaster and illuminates the circumstances …
Identity Reconstruction Of Chinese Migrant Women In Ireland, Jun Ni
Identity Reconstruction Of Chinese Migrant Women In Ireland, Jun Ni
Books/Book chapters
This chapter presents an original qualitative study on the cross-cultural adaptation process and identity reconstruction of Chinese migrant women in Ireland. Based on an analysis of Chinese women’s cross-cultural adaptation experience, this study identifies facilitators of and barriers to the cross-cultural adaptation. It finds that the women who adopted an integrated strategy have developed an intercultural identity. On the one hand, they want to maintain their Chinese cultural identity and heritage; at the same time, they are committed to developing relationships with mainstream Irish society. Most Chinese women take pride in their Chinese culture and values. They aim to bring …
