Artifacts Of A Bygone Time: Stephen Sondheim And Pastiche, Rose Mack Jan 2020

Artifacts Of A Bygone Time: Stephen Sondheim And Pastiche, Rose Mack

Theses & ETDs

Stephen Sondheim has crafted dozens of pieces for the musical theatre stage over his sixty-five-year career. Building on work which explores Sondheim’s musical vocabulary, this thesis focuses on how Sondheim uses pastiche as it relates to remembering the past. By focus on this use of pastiche, two sides appear: pastiche as nostalgia and pastiche as stereotype. I look at two of Sondheim’s musicals in order to demonstrate the opposing sides of pastiche. The first is Follies (1971), which uses a style of music from Broadway during the early decades of the twentieth century in order to elicit nostalgia in an …

The Role Of Coca In Indigenous Cultures Of The Sierra Nevada Mountains Of Colombia, Salua Rivero

Theses & ETDs

In this project, I will investigate the role of Erythroxylum Coca in indigenous communities living in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Colombia. The traditional cultivation and use of the coca leaf has nutritional, medicinal and ceremonial purposes. Used for thousands of generations for stamina and energy, elevation sickness, digestive aid and as a staple when food is scarce, coca is highly valued all throughout South America. The effects of colonization followed by industrialization in Colombia, has affected these communities and their ancient cultivation of this plant. The high demand for coca derivatives such as cocaine has impacted the communities in …

“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben Jan 2020

“The Price Of Touch”: Emergent Postcolonial Subjectivities Through Metaphors Of Illness In Contemporary South Asian Literature, Christina Graben

Theses & ETDs

This thesis identifies a common interest between postcolonial theory and Lacanian notions of subjectivity. Both lines of thought observe a wound that has been written over, by hegemonic structures that enforce colonial networks of power or by the illusion of a stable identity, and examine the traces of that wound as they manifest in our experience of the world. These structures of power and subjectivity govern how our experiences may signify and how we may interpret them, while the wound they attempt to bandage represents a void of signification or holds something inarticulable. The legacies of colonial medicine have defined …

From Learner To Teacher And Back Again: Second Language Teaching Methods And Practice, Mairead Howley Jan 2020

From Learner To Teacher And Back Again: Second Language Teaching Methods And Practice, Mairead Howley

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines second language teaching methods and practice in a focused manner. I aim to illustrate how I developed as a teacher as a consequence of the combination of academic study of pedagogy, classroom experience and reflection. Teaching requires an understanding of the available methods and techniques in addition to continual research into trends in the field. The first part of this thesis represents my own research in this direction and aims to provide other pre-service language teachers with a historical understanding of methods from which to begin their own research and teaching. In the second part of the …

The Relationship Between The Notions Of Gender Roles In Flamenco Performances: How Are These Roles Defined In The Flamenco Culture?, Lucille Sanz Jan 2020

The Relationship Between The Notions Of Gender Roles In Flamenco Performances: How Are These Roles Defined In The Flamenco Culture?, Lucille Sanz

Theses & ETDs

Flamenco, as an art form, has developed a gender typecast in which the exhibition of physical movements, vocal interpretations, and the use of customary musical instruments have reflected long-established gender roles and hierarchy of a traditionally patriarchal society. This thesis analyzes how flamenco perpetuates traditional stereotypes of gender, the obstacles artists face within those roles, and how performers are challenging gender differentiation and integrate new gender imagery into modern-day flamenco. In its beginnings, flamenco was not a form of entertainment but instead a way of life where marginalized citizens expressed their fears, joys, and many other emotions via the art …

Welcome To My Ted Talk: A Sentiment Analysis Of Ted Talks From Founders To Better Understand How To Pitch Venture Capitalists, Jennifer Greenberg

Theses & ETDs

This study builds off previous academic research regarding understanding how founders should pitch investors. Specifically I will focus on the different sentiments that founders should and should not be using in order to get the best funding score. To calculate funding score, I will be calculating the average amount of funding that other companies who are in the same industry vertical and same founding round as them according to Crunchbase; I will then use percent deviation to calculate a letter grade for each funding score. I was able to find that female founders are only benefited if they have joyful …

The Use Of Speculative Fiction In Constructing Gender Identity, Claire Quin Jan 2020

The Use Of Speculative Fiction In Constructing Gender Identity, Claire Quin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis argues that speculative fiction can be a persuasive tool in imagining new ways of conceptualizing gender and humanity, and an analytical tool for the exploration of gender, humanity, and intersectionality in modern American society. First, I present an analysis of Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy, which invites readers to think about how gender and humanity are conceived, as well as who benefits from the enforcement of gender and humanity norms. Secondly, I offer the reader my own speculative fiction that simply takes as understood that gender identity isn't easy--but builds a story that is complex and has a …

China’S Avant-Garde Literature In Translation: Ge Fei, Shannon Smith Jan 2020

China’S Avant-Garde Literature In Translation: Ge Fei, Shannon Smith

Theses & ETDs

This thesis project focuses on my process of translating the novella Flock of Brown Birds and the short story “Ring Flower” into English. Both pieces of literature are written by the author Ge Fei, one of China’s most renowned avant-garde writers. In this thesis, I explore the dynamics of translating Chinese literature into English, as well as the unique challenges that arise when translating avant-grade literature. The beginning of the first chapter is an introductory look at the sociopolitical background of China’s literary avant-garde genre during the 1980s. The second half of the chapter is a literary analysis of Flock …

Information Networks: Improving Information Consumption Through Human Curation, Parankush Bhardwaj Jan 2020

Information Networks: Improving Information Consumption Through Human Curation, Parankush Bhardwaj

Theses & ETDs

This thesis goes through the development of a software application aimed at delivering news content to readers devoid of misinformation, clickbait, and filter bubbles. Rather than relying on an algorithmically curated timeline, like Facebook and Google, to deliver content to consumers, this application instead relies on human-curation. Two user studies were conducted to examine the effectiveness of the app’s user interface in providing a great user experience to consumers. The results show that human curation creates a high-quality browsing experience and should be used more often in information networks when delivering news content to consumers.

Performance Art And The Disruption Of Colonialism In Museums, Evan Murdoch Jan 2020

Performance Art And The Disruption Of Colonialism In Museums, Evan Murdoch

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will explore the potential of contemporary performance art to confront colonial legacies in museums. The imposition of marginalized artists’ physical bodies, which have been historically objectified by the institution, into the space disrupts the notion of the museum as a neutral classifying house and draws attention to its colonial inheritance. This live, active body of the performer contrasts with the static identities and objects otherwise on display. It is from this contrast that performance art draws its power within museological spaces, contesting the naturalization of a passive Otherness through the assertion of agency and identity. The disruptive character …

Reconstructed Femininity, Self-Constructed Subjectivity: Little Magazines, Anti-Fashion, And The Mechanomorphic Female Engineers Of New York Dada, Diana Proenza Jan 2020

Reconstructed Femininity, Self-Constructed Subjectivity: Little Magazines, Anti-Fashion, And The Mechanomorphic Female Engineers Of New York Dada, Diana Proenza

Theses & ETDs

Several “little” New York magazines and art journals that predominantly featured women as artists, writers, and editors from 1914 through 1925—including New York Dada, The Little Review, and Rogue—have become quintessential fixtures of the American modernist canon. Inspired by the same anarchic, nihilistic and ironic spirit as their European Dada predecessors, they functioned to introduce and disseminate New York Dada and a greater American avant-garde tradition. Against the destructive, mechanized landscape that emerged during and immediately after World War I, this thesis highlights the celebratory reclamation of female subjectivity and artistic agency by the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven, Margaret Anderson, …

Heidegger And The Question Concerning Technology, Elias Latimer Jan 2020

Heidegger And The Question Concerning Technology, Elias Latimer

Theses & ETDs

After the atrocities of WWII, certain technologies such as nuclear weaponry has been shown to not necessarily be in humanity’s best interest. Yet, technology is a necessary component of our everyday lives; hence, there is an ever-increasing imperative to properly control it. Although, according to Martin Heidegger, Modern Technology may be irreversibly in control of humanity rather than vice versa. Given such a grim outlook, the question of this thesis aims to clarify Heidegger’s perspective on the origin of this problem as well as his solution of ‘poetic dwelling’.

Bounce For Your Ward: A Grounded Theory Approach Investigating The Role Cultural Intermediation Plays In The Development Of Local Sensibilities In New Orleans Bounce Music, Rosemary Demarco Jan 2020

Bounce For Your Ward: A Grounded Theory Approach Investigating The Role Cultural Intermediation Plays In The Development Of Local Sensibilities In New Orleans Bounce Music, Rosemary Demarco

Theses & ETDs

In this project I consider what role cultural intermediation plays in the development of local sensibilities. I investigated the latent messages in New Orleans Bounce rap through a mixed methods approach of a content analysis and grounded theory. Using a playlist curated specifically for this project by a well-known Bounce DJ in New Orleans, I conducted interviews with him to substantiate my findings from the data analysis and provide a more holistic view of Bounce rap. By applying a mixed methods approach to a traditional content analysis, I triangulated interviews, journal notes, and lyrical data to make sense of messages …

The Use Of Aac Devices In Preschool-Aged Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Narrative Review Of Interventions, Aurora Baraiolo Jan 2020

The Use Of Aac Devices In Preschool-Aged Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Narrative Review Of Interventions, Aurora Baraiolo

Undergraduate Review

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disability that affects a child’s social interactions and ability to communicate and develop language. In the United States, approximately 1 in 68 children are diagnosed with ASD, and ASD is becoming more prevalent (Darcy-Mahoney, 2016). Data show that about 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with ASD. Prevalence among different races is not statistically significant (Caucasian 1 in 65; African American, 1 in 76; Asian/Pacific Islander, 1 in 88; Hispanic, 1 in 99) (National Institute of Mental Health, 2016). At the core of ASD are deficits in language …

Casting A Wide Net: The Value Of Collaboration And Outreach With Source Communities In The Analysis Of Historic Native American Fishing Nets, Annabelle Fichtner Camp, The Lenape Tribe Of Delaware

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Lenape Tribe of Delaware is one of two recognized tribes within the state of Delaware. Having only gained state recognition in 2016, the group is actively working to regain the lifeways of their ancestors that have been lost in the aftermath of colonization and systemic oppression. This paper discusses collaborative research between the author, a student in Art Conservation, and the Lenape Tribe of Delaware into the once-crucial practice of net-tying. It addresses the impetus for the project and its role in object-based decolonization and Indigenous knowledge reclamation. The research was inspired by the last known Lenape netmaker, Clem …

A Walk Through Contemporary South Asian Textile “Daatsans”, Rohma Khan Jan 2020

A Walk Through Contemporary South Asian Textile “Daatsans”, Rohma Khan

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Dasatangoi is a Persian word for the centuries old, rich tradition of oral storytelling as practiced in the subcontinent. The epics that have passed on from one generation to another tell magical stories of adventure, war, religious anecdotes with immense details such as Arabian Nights, Dastaan-e-Ameer Hamza, and Mahabharata. Inspired by this subcontinental tradition, the presentation focuses on how these rich epics were translated into visual narratives in various indigenous textiles such as in Persian shikar-gahs and the subcontinent’s Chamba rumaals. In addition, it shows how these guided and made skeletal references for contemporary textile artists in Pakistan. Therefore, the …

Stories Of Welcome Blanket Makers: Towards A Philosophy Of Craft, Alesia Maltz Jan 2020

Stories Of Welcome Blanket Makers: Towards A Philosophy Of Craft, Alesia Maltz

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Welcome Blanket was created as a craftivism response to Trump’s call for a border wall. “Imagine if the massive distance of this wall was re-conceptualized and re-contextualized not to divide, but to include. Instead of a wall, a concrete line, to keep people out, what if lines of yarn became 3,500,640 yards of blankets to welcome people in?” The 3,200-blanket goal was quickly achieved and shown in the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago. Then, with enclosed notes from the makers welcoming newly arrived immigrants, the blankets were distributed to refugees and immigrants in several resettlement communities …

Abstract

EFFECTS OF ATTENTION FOCUS AND WARM-UP ON PERFORMANCE OF CENTRAL AND PERIPHERAL PROCESSING

by

Mohammed Aljahni

December 2020

Advisor: Dr. Qin Lai

Major: Kinesiology - Exercise and Sport Science

Degree: Doctor of Philosophy

Previous studies have shown that external focus of attention decreased reaction time by increasing central processing speed, compared to internal focus of attention. The research suggests that there is a direct link between attentional focus and information processing. It is also well-documented that warm-up or moderate exercise increases the central or cognitive processing speed even though no consistent finding on the latency of the muscle activation …

Disabled Autonomy, Katherine L. Moore Jan 2020

Disabled Autonomy, Katherine L. Moore

Journal of Health Care Law and Policy

Disability law is still undertheorized. In 2007, Ruth Colker wrote that disability law was undertheorized because it conflated “separate” with “unequal,” and because disability was largely ignored or poorly understood within theories of justice. The solution for Colker was to attach the anti-subordination perspective, which was developed to apply to race and sex, directly to disability. This Article argues that this transportation from the race and sex contexts was a partial solution, but is not sufficient to give full substance to disability law theory. Concepts from critical race theory and feminist jurisprudence have long been simply transported into the disability …

Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron Jan 2020

Experiences Of Limited English Proficiency (Lep) Patients In Healthcare, Javier Cintron

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As the US becomes increasingly more diverse, the presence of non-English speaking individuals also increases. With healthcare being a vital aspect of most individuals’ lives, it is drastically affected by any gap in communication, especially when a language barrier is present. For this investigation, I conducted a research study to examine the experiences of limited English proficiency (LEP) patients in healthcare using anthropological methods. The aim was to understand how having LEP affects patients. The primary form of data collection for this project consisted of Semi-structured interviews with a sample of individuals with LEP. In addition to interviews, I analyzed …

Middle Eastern And Western Leaders Speeches On Counterterrorism, Ranya Eid Jan 2020

Middle Eastern And Western Leaders Speeches On Counterterrorism, Ranya Eid

Honors Undergraduate Theses

This research analyzes political leaders' response to the ideological challenge presented by ISIS and Al Qaeda. It focuses on the counterterrorism speeches given by political leaders in a number of Middle Eastern countries and the United States. The analysis of the speeches is along two dimensions: the nature of their domestic and international audiences, and the motivations behind the speeches. A sample of several dozens of speeches is analyzed. The empirical study had proved that leaders mostly exhibit differences depending on their audiences to reach a certain political goal. While leaders tend to call for unification among countries in their …

The Relationship Between Community Health Worker Supply And The Rate Of Preventable Hospitalizations Of Rural Latinos With Diabetes, Danielle O. Mapp Jan 2020

The Relationship Between Community Health Worker Supply And The Rate Of Preventable Hospitalizations Of Rural Latinos With Diabetes, Danielle O. Mapp

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The ever-increasing prevalence of diabetes mellitus and its associated healthcare costs in the United States has led to our healthcare system's need for cost-effective health resources and chronic disease management. The interventions of Community Health Workers (CHWs) can cost-effectively improve population health and prevent the unnecessary utilization of some medical services especially in rural, low-income, minority populations, where there is often limited access to healthcare. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the number of total CHWs in rural counties and the mean diabetes-related preventable hospitalization rates in Latino patients diagnosed with diabetes in those rural …

Living Up To The American Dream: The Influence Of Family On Second-Generation Immigrants, Nicole Palmeri Jan 2020

Living Up To The American Dream: The Influence Of Family On Second-Generation Immigrants, Nicole Palmeri

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Second-generation immigrants are increasingly embracing their biculturalism, equally identifying as American and "other" (Yazykova & McLeigh, 2015). While this allows for ethnic diversity as well as other social and linguistic advantages, the internalization of two different cultures has been linked to causing tensions related to identity development and mental health (Huynh et al., 2018; Ceri et al., 2017; Ritsner & Ponizovsky, 1999). Previous research has shown a link between parental support and an individual's acculturation and psychological well-being (Pawliuk et al., 1996; Abad & Sheldon, 2008). This study seeks to further examine the influence of family on the bicultural identity …

Caregiver Well-Being And Burden: Variations By Race/Ethnicity And Care Recipient Nativity Status, Heehyul E. Moon, William E. Haley, Sunshine M. Rote, Jeanelle S. Sears

Aging Studies Faculty Publications

Background and Objectives

Despite growing diversity among the aging population and extensive previous research on racial/ethnic minority caregivers, little research has been conducted on the potentially unique experiences and outcomes of informal caregivers of foreign-born care recipients. Using nationally representative data and the Stress Process Model, the current study examined the differences in caregiver outcomes (care burden, psychological well-being, and self-rated health) by care recipient nativity status (U.S.-born vs. foreign-born) and the extent to which caregiver outcomes vary by care recipient nativity status and caregiver race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Hispanic, and Others). Research Design and Methods

The current study …
