An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones Jan 2020

An Ethnic Cultural Landscape: German Breweries And Social Institutions In Covington, Kentucky, 1860-1920, Andrew Jones

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

A useful marker for recognizing the impact that ethnic groups make to the social and cultural characteristics of a city are the institutions and material landscapes created by those groups. In northern Kentucky, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, German immigrants and their descendants in the city of Covington established institutions such as breweries, saloons, social associations, and churches that became the heart of ethnic neighborhoods and shaped the form of the landscape. This research examines institutional and cultural landscape markers of German cultural identity in the city of Covington, Kentucky, from 1860 to 1920. Demographic and spatial data …

A Description Of A Humans Knowledge Using Artificial Intelligence, Dj Price

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

There currently does not exist a way to easily view the relationships between a collection of written items (e.g. sports articles, diary entries, research papers). In recent years, novel machine learning methods have been developed which are very good at extracting semantic relationships from large numbers of documents. One of them is the (unsupervised) machine learning model Doc2Vec which constructs vectors for documents. The research project detailed in this paper uses this and other already existing algorithms to analyze the relationship between pieces of text. We set forth a broader ambition for this project before discussing the use and need …

The Benefits Of Sign Language Integration For The Hearing Classroom, Taylor Laporta Jan 2020

The Benefits Of Sign Language Integration For The Hearing Classroom, Taylor Laporta

Undergraduate Honors College Theses 2016-

Sign language, unlike spoken languages, relies on the use of different parameters, such as handshapes, movements, and facial expressions, to communicate. American Sign language has a rich history and was developed to create an accessible language for individuals regardless of hearing status, as well as an effective education for d/Deaf individuals. Elements of Deaf education when implemented in hearing curriculums could provide benefits for hearing students. Deaf curriculums are created to adapt to the challenges that Deaf students face, who in many ways face greater challenges than hearing students. Deaf curriculums are designed to compensate for these challenges and are …

Social Media Based Algorithmic Clinical Decision Support Learning From Behavioral Predispositions, Radhika V. Medury Jan 2020

Social Media Based Algorithmic Clinical Decision Support Learning From Behavioral Predispositions, Radhika V. Medury

Doctoral Dissertations

Behavioral disorders are disabilities characterized by an individual’s mood, thinking, and social interactions. The commonality of behavioral disorders amongst the United States population has increased in the last few years, with an estimated 50% of all Americans diagnosed with a behavioral disorder at some point in their lifetime. AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity Disorder is one such behavioral disorder that is a severe public health concern because of its high prevalence, incurable nature, significant impact on domestic life, and peer relationships. Symptomatically, in theory, ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Access to providers who can offer diagnosis and treat the disorder varies …

Decolonizing Climate Discourse And Legitimating Indigenous Wisdom: Toward An Ecosystemic Episteme, Caitlin Robison Jan 2020

Decolonizing Climate Discourse And Legitimating Indigenous Wisdom: Toward An Ecosystemic Episteme, Caitlin Robison

Honors Program Theses

Devoted to redefining western capitalist epistemologies through recognition and acceptance of Indigenous wisdom in modern sociopolitical structures, I use this paper to expose theoretical and material flaws in western neoliberal capitalism as an implicitly colonial knowledge system incapable of sufficiently addressing the climate crisis. Here, colonialism is broadly understood as ideological and/or material practices of exploitation and domination within social, cultural, economic, and ecological frameworks. Colonialism, in this paper, is further characterized by having particular philosophical commitments to notions of binarism, individualism, and consumerism which reveal capitalism’s structure and function as neocolonial by nature. Most evidently, today’s global climate crisis …

Against Monetary Functionalism: A Social Ontology Of Money, James Payne Jan 2020

Against Monetary Functionalism: A Social Ontology Of Money, James Payne

Honors Program Theses

This paper explores the concepts of individualism and holism in social ontology through an analysis of the ontology of money by integrating insights from the Critical Realist tradition as well as the distinction between metaphysical grounds and anchors. In doing so it examines alternative explanations of money's ontology like the paradigmatic approach of John Searle. The results of the inquiry are then connected in relation to the models of social explanation in mainstream economics.

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds Jan 2020

The Brass Plates Version Of Genesis, Noel B. Reynolds

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The Book of Mormon peoples repeatedly indicated that they were descendants of Joseph, the son of Jacob who was sold into Egypt by his brothers. The plates of brass that they took with them from Jerusalem c. 600 bce provided them with a version of many Old Testament books and others not included in our Hebrew Bible. Sometime after publishing his translation of the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith undertook an inspired revision of the Bible. The opening chapters of his version of Genesis contain a lot of material not included in the Hebrew Bible. But intriguingly, distinctive phraseology in …

An Approach To Isaiah Studies, Donald W. Parry Jan 2020

An Approach To Isaiah Studies, Donald W. Parry

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This review makes a case, briefly, for the unmistakable presence of Jesus Christ in Isaiah’s text, which case is based on a corpus linguistic-based description of the Hebrew Bible, equivalent designations of deific names, self-identification declarations by the Lord, and more. And, importantly, one can never set aside the multiple teachings and testimonies of our modern prophets and apostles regarding Isaiah’s prophecies of Jesus Christ. Moreover, in my view, a knowledge of biblical Hebrew helps us to penetrate the very depths and heights of Isaiah’s text.

An American Indian Language Family With Middle Eastern Loanwords: Responding To A Recent Critique, John Robertson Jan 2020

An American Indian Language Family With Middle Eastern Loanwords: Responding To A Recent Critique, John Robertson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In 2015 Brian Stubbs published a landmark book, demonstrating that Uto-Aztecan, an American Indian language family, contains a vast number of Northwest Semitic and Egyptian loanwords spoken in the first millennium bc. Unlike other similar claims — absurd, eccentric, and without substance — Stubbs’s book is a serious, linguistically based study that deserves serious consideration. In the scholarly world, any claim of Old World influence in the New World languages is met with critical, often hostile skepticism. This essay is written in response to one such criticism.

Section 2: Nephi The Writer Chapter 7: Nephi Preparing, Brant Gardner Jan 2020

Section 2: Nephi The Writer Chapter 7: Nephi Preparing, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

We have the Book of Mormon people because of Lehi. Nephi began the tradition that eventually allowed Mormon to create the Book of Mormon. Lehi led his family to the New World, but Nephi defined his descendants as a record-keeping people. The Nephites were a people of the Book both because Nephi (and his brothers) preserved a record-keeping tradition (the brass plates) and because he began a new one after arriving in the New World. Mormon may be most directly responsible for the Book of Mormon, but the records Mormon used (and many of the organizational structures that Mormon used) …

Chapter 10: Final Considerations About Writing, Brant Gardner Jan 2020

Chapter 10: Final Considerations About Writing, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Neither the extant original manuscript nor the printer’s manuscript of the Book of Mormon have any indication of punctuation. The dictation was written as it was heard, with no attempt to add the literary niceties of paragraphs and punctuation. The nature of the dictation in English cannot tell us whether the Nephite language had visual clues that helped divide ideas. Based on many early texts, it is safest to assume that it did not.

Chapter 11: Book Of 1 Nephi, Brant Gardner Jan 2020

Chapter 11: Book Of 1 Nephi, Brant Gardner

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Nephi begins his book according to traditions he learned in his scribal training.277 He adds a colophon,278 which had two functions: describe the contents of the book and to identify that author. The synoptic header prior to chapter I provides the outline of the events to be covered in Nephi’s first book: the departure of the family from Jerusalem, the journey into the wilderness, the return to Jerusalem for the brass plates, the acquisition of wives from Ishmael’s family, the arrival at Bountiful, the building of a ship, and the journey to the new world. Evidence from Mormon’s use of …

Becoming Men And Women Of Understanding: Wordplay On Benjamin — An Addendum, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2020

Becoming Men And Women Of Understanding: Wordplay On Benjamin — An Addendum, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Royal and divine sonship/daughterhood (bānîm = “children”/“sons,” bānôt = “daughters”) is a prevalent theme throughout the Book of Mosiah. “Understanding” (Hebrew noun, bînâ or tĕbûnâ; verb, bîn) is also a key theme in that book. The initial juxtaposition of “sons” and “understanding” with the name “Benjamin” (binyāmîn, “son of the right hand”) in Mosiah 1:2–7 suggests the narrator’s association of the underlying terms with the name Benjamin likely on the basis of homophony. King Benjamin repeatedly invokes “understand” in his speech (forms of “understand” were derived from the root *byn in Hebrew; Mosiah 2:9, 40; 4:4; cf. 3:15) — a …

An Other Approach To Isaiah Studies, Joshua M. Sears Jan 2020

An Other Approach To Isaiah Studies, Joshua M. Sears

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

A recent review of Joseph M. Spencer’s book The Vision of All: Twenty-Five Lectures on Isaiah in Nephi’s Record made the case that the book contains several challenges and problems, in particular that it advocates a theologically deficient interpretation of Isaiah that denies Isaiah’s witness of Jesus Christ. This response provides an alternative reading of Spencer’s work and suggests these assertions are often based on misunderstanding. At stake in this conversation is the question of whether or not there is more than one valid way to read Isaiah that draws upon a faithful, Restoration perspective. While Spencer may interpret and …

Pitfalls Of The Ngram Viewer, Standford Carmack Jan 2020

Pitfalls Of The Ngram Viewer, Standford Carmack

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Google’s Ngram Viewer often gives a distorted view of the popularity of cultural/religious phrases during the early 19th century and before. Other larger textual sources can provide a truer picture of relevant usage patterns of various content-rich phrases that occur in the Book of Mormon. Such an approach suggests that almost all of its phraseology fits comfortably within its syntactic framework, which is mostly early modern in character.

Proper Names From The Small Plates: Some Notes On The Personal Names Zoram, Jarom, Omni, And Mosiah, Stephen D. Ricks

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

With a selection of a few notable examples (Zoram, Jarom, Omni, and Mosiah) that have been analyzed by the ongoing Book of Mormon names project, Stephen Ricks argues that “proper names in the Book of Mormon are demonstrably ancient.”

“We May Not Understand Our Words”: The Book Of Abraham And The Concept Of Translation In The Pearl Of Greatest Price, John S. Thompson Jan 2020

“We May Not Understand Our Words”: The Book Of Abraham And The Concept Of Translation In The Pearl Of Greatest Price, John S. Thompson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In recent years there has been an effort among some scholars to make sense of the historical sources surrounding Joseph Smith’s claims to be a translator of ancient records. Terryl Givens, with some assistance from Brian Hauglid, has explored the evidence surrounding the Book of Abraham and suggests that, in this case, Joseph Smith may not have translated an ancient record of Abraham’s writings into English as typically believed in the Latter-day Saint community. Consequently, Givens provides four alternative ways the work of “translating” may have been understood or practiced by the Prophet and his scribes. This essay highlights some …

Change The Environment; Change The Child, Theresa M. Sabo Jan 2020

Change The Environment; Change The Child, Theresa M. Sabo

MOT Student Capstones

Children that have been exposed in utero to illicit drug use by their mothers is a growing problem in society. These children enter the early childhood education system with biological changes to their brains that affect their ability to learn and engage effectively with others. They present with a wide variety of behaviors that they may or may not be able to control. Often these children are labeled as just not trying. An evidenced-based PowerPoint presentation named Change the Environment; Change the Child was developed to provide early childhood educators a better understanding of this population's needs and of interventions …

“The Fight For Hózhó”: The Survival Of Diné Ethnomedical Lifeways Within The Nuclear Landscape, Cabrini Austin

Theses & ETDs

In this thesis I explore conceptualizations of health and healing by the Navajo in hopes to gain a deeper understanding of how the preservation of traditional medical knowledge is affected by a legacy of environmental degradation. Uranium mining occurred on and around Navajo lands from 1944 to 1982. During this time, hundreds of Navajo miners and their families were exposed to harmful radiation through the contamination of air and water sources. Not only has this directly impacted their health, but it has also negatively affected many of the traditional food and plant sources that the Navajo use for ceremonial and …
