Is Decrypting The Genetic Legacy Of America’S Indigenous Populations Key To The Historicity Of The Book Of Mormon?, Ugo A. Perego, Jayne E. Ekins

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Some critics of the Book of Mormon suppose that the DNA characteristics of modern Native Americans should be compatible with “Israelite” rather than with Asian genetics. The authors point out that while DNA is a valid tool to study ancient and modern populations, we must be careful about drawing absolute conclusions. They show that many of the conclusions of critics are based on unwarranted assumptions. There are specific limitations that cannot be ignored when using the available genetic data to infer conclusions regarding the DNA of Book of Mormon peoples. Such conclusions are not founded on solid science but are …

The Emerging Metamodern Sensibility In Narrative: A Case Study Of Things Left Forgotten And The Dai Gyakuten Saiban Games, Gina Barbieri Jan 2020

The Emerging Metamodern Sensibility In Narrative: A Case Study Of Things Left Forgotten And The Dai Gyakuten Saiban Games, Gina Barbieri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis proposes a metamodern shift in recent narrative trends, which incorporate modernist and postmodernist techniques for narrative. This includes narrative shifts which utilize postmodern devices such as irony and satire for seemingly modern ends such as hope and progress. This thesis posits that this shift can be understood through an analysis of emergent media, and considers the intertextual nature of fanfiction narratives emerging from games through a case study of Things Left Forgotten, a fanfiction written by Archive of Our Own user LookerDeWitt and based upon the two Dai Gyakuten Saiban games, spinoffs of the Ace Attorney series …

Ayahuasca’S Religious Diaspora In The Wake Of The Doctrine Of Discovery, Roger K. Green Jan 2020

Ayahuasca’S Religious Diaspora In The Wake Of The Doctrine Of Discovery, Roger K. Green

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

‘Ayahuasca’ is a plant mixture with a variety of recipes and localized names native to South America. Often, the woody ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) is combined with chacruna leaf (Psychotria viridis) in a tea, inducing psychedelic effects among its users. While social usage varies among Indigenous Peoples of South America, during the twentieth century new religious movements in Brazil began employing the mixture as religious sacrament. Additionally, various centers for ayahuasca “healing” have emerged both inside and outside of the Amazon Rainforest, frequently with the aim of helping people addicted to other substances. As interest grew, …

An Examination Of Relational Health, Belonging, And Self-Compassion In Chinese International Students, Elizabeth A. Harris Shaffner Jan 2020

An Examination Of Relational Health, Belonging, And Self-Compassion In Chinese International Students, Elizabeth A. Harris Shaffner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chinese international students (CISs), the largest segment of international students coming to the US to study at institutions of higher education (IIE, 2016), are reported to experience more acculturative stress than other international students because of the vast differences in social and cultural norms between the United States and China (Li & Glasser, 2005; Yeh & Inose, 2003). The present study used Relational-Cultural Theory (RCT) as the framework to explore the ways undergraduate CISs struggle and thrive in the face of acculturative stress and to understand how positive and negative outcomes are associated with their relational health, sense of campus …

Of Research Reviews And Practice Guides: Translating Rapidly Growing Research On Adolescent Literacy Into Updated Practice Recommendations., Daniel Reynolds Jan 2020

Of Research Reviews And Practice Guides: Translating Rapidly Growing Research On Adolescent Literacy Into Updated Practice Recommendations., Daniel Reynolds

2020 Faculty Bibliography

The demand for evidence-based instructional practices has driven a large

supply of research on adolescent literacy. Documenting this supply, Baye,

Inns, Lake, and Slavin’s 2019 article in Reading Research Quarterly synthesized

far more studies, with far more rigorous methodology, than had ever

been collected before. What does this mean for practice? Inspired by this article,

I investigated how this synthesis compared with the 2008 U.S. Institute of

Education Sciences practice guide for adolescent literacy. I also include two

contemporary documents for context: Herrera, Truckenmiller, and Foorman’s

(2016) review and the U.K. Education Endowment Foundation’s 2019 practice

guide for secondary schools. …

Richard A. Harrison Symposium

The Harrison Symposium celebrates independent and collaborative student research in the Social Sciences and Humanities. The Harrison is usually held as an annual conference in May, but this year’s shift to remote teaching and the new coronavirus pandemic eliminated the opportunity for in-person presentations. Instead of cancelling the event, students nominated by faculty members were invited either to participate in next year’s Harrison, or to contribute to the volume you are now reading. Reimagining the Harrison as a written artifact was inspired by the 1997 Harrison Symposium. In the early years of the conference, the Dean of Faculty Richard A. …

"To Bloom In Empty Space": An Introduction And Commentary On The Petichta To Esther Rabbah, Ethan Nosanow Levin Jan 2020

"To Bloom In Empty Space": An Introduction And Commentary On The Petichta To Esther Rabbah, Ethan Nosanow Levin

Religious Studies Honors Projects

The petichta to Esther Rabbah (c. 6th century CE) reflects a pessimistic rabbinic response to the physical and theological displacement of the Jews in an increasingly Christianized Roman Palestine. Using the covenantal curses (specifically Deuteronomy 28 and Leviticus 26) as a frame, the rabbis situate the book of Esther and their current socio-political context into the rabbinic paradigm of the Four Kingdoms, representative of ongoing imperial oppression. According to Esther Rabbah, Jews living under Roman rule–even those in Palestine–are living in a state of “exile” characterized by the ongoing impact of the covenantal curses. For the rabbis, Israel cannot …

CDM Annual Reports

LETTER FROM THE DEAN

As I write this letter wrapping up the 2019-20 academic year, we remain in a global pandemic that has profoundly altered our lives. While many things have changed, some stayed the same: our CDM community worked hard, showed up for one another, and continued to advance their respective fields. A year that began like many others changed swiftly on March 11th when the University announced that spring classes would run remotely. By March 28th, the first day of spring quarter, we had moved 500 CDM courses online thanks to the diligent work of our faculty, staff, …

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives Jan 2020

Illegitimate Control: An Acknowledgement Of False White Supremacy (2020-2021), Whitman Ives

CPN 101: Researched Inquiry

This research inquiry introduces a timely conversation on racism, cultural appropriation, and white supremacy. Ives’ argument is that the root cause of cultural appropriation and racism can be traced to a negative and false history of white supremacy. In other words, white culture has been founded and perpetuated based on power-seeking behavior, of which racism is more a symptom. Ives asserts that it is important to acknowledge that white culture is based on false assumptions of supremacy and to address that more systematically rather than addressing only individual events or instances of racism.

Patent Law’S Purposeful Ambiguity, Craig Allen Nard Jan 2020

Patent Law’S Purposeful Ambiguity, Craig Allen Nard

Faculty Publications

The ambiguity of language is an unremarkable, yet persistent force within our legal system. In the context of patent law, ambiguity presents a particularly acute dilemma; namely, while describing technological innovations is a salient feature of the patent system, affecting the validity and scope of one’s property right, the blunt nature of language makes this task particularly difficult. This paper argues to address this vexing fixture, patent doctrine purposely embraces ambiguity as a linguistic accommodation that provides measured flexibility for actors to claim and describe their innovations. It should not be surprising, therefore, that some of patent law’s most venerable …

[Accepted Article Manuscript Version (Postprint)] Audience Responses To Diverse Superheroes: The Roles Of Gender And Race In Forging Connections With Media Characters In Superhero Franchise Films, Alice Hall

Communication and Media Faculty Works

This study took advantage of the recent release of several mainstream, franchise action films featuring diverse casts to investigate how the gender and race of viewers interacts with those of the characters to shape viewers’ sense of connection to the characters. Through an online survey of 147 viewers, it addresses which characters within a film the viewers saw themselves as most connected to, and considers two types of subjective, virtual connections to specific characters - identification and parasocial relationship (PSR). Respondents were more likely to cite characters played by actors of the same gender or the same race as the …

Interpreter Foundation Books

Stephen David Ricks is a professor of Hebrew and cognate learning in the Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he has taught for almost four decades (1981–). It was at BYU, in a freshman Book of Mormon class, that he first met Shirley Smith. Four years later, after they had both served German- speaking missions (Stephen in Switzerland and Shirley in Southern Germany), they were married in the Provo Utah Temple in 1974. They are now the proud parents of six children—three girls and three boys, all of whom are married—and have twenty …

Lothar-Günther Buchheim’S Das Boot: Memory And The Nazi Past, Dean Jon Guarnaschelli

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the relationship between German author Lothar-Günther Buchheim (1918-2007), his bestselling 1973 novel Das Boot (The Boat), and the Federal Republic of Germany’s endeavor to come to terms with the spiritual damage left behind by National Socialism as well as with the responsibility of Germans for that past, known as the Vergangenheitsbewältigung. Buchheim was a reporter for the German Navy during the Battle of the Atlantic who benefitted from distinct privileges, yet he was never in a position of power during the conflict. He fulfilled his duties for the propaganda division with accolades, but thirty years later Buchheim …

Kindergarten Literacy Screening: Cultivating A Mulitfactorial Preventive Approach To Literacy Instruction, Susan C. Schatz Jan 2020

Kindergarten Literacy Screening: Cultivating A Mulitfactorial Preventive Approach To Literacy Instruction, Susan C. Schatz

Theses and Dissertations

Universal screeners are mandated in many states, but the impact of the use of screeners and pragmatic instructional programs are not well connected. The purpose of this mixed methods study addressed a significant need for understanding how to connect screening instruments to instructional designs that support a preventative approach to literacy instruction. Additionally, this study aimed to uncover teachers’ perceptions about the affordances and challenges of screeners to create a multitiered system of supports for reading instruction in an inclusive kindergarten setting. Encompassing a pragmatic research paradigm this study was framed by cognitive behavioral theory revealing a multiple cognitive deficit …

Teacher Self-Efficacy In A Multicultural Alternative Education Program, Angela Marie Trowers

Theses and Dissertations

As the United States embraces cultural diversity, educators need to feel a sense of preparedness to effectively master culturally responsive teaching which is vital to students’ academic growth and development. Drawing on the interpretivist- constructive paradigm and self-efficacy theory, this narrative inquiry study, examined teacher’s beliefs, attitudes and perceptions, with regards to their culturally relevant pedagogy and the impact on their multicultural students’ academic achievement and social success. Eight teacher candidates, seven females and one male (Caucasian), who teach at a multicultural alternative education program in New York State participated in two interviews, one face to face and the other …

Affirmation And Reaction: Towards A Critical Biosemiotic Sociology, Benjamin Dreyer Jan 2020

Affirmation And Reaction: Towards A Critical Biosemiotic Sociology, Benjamin Dreyer

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Does our physicality influence society? If it does then what meaning can be derived from that relationship? What follows is an analysis of theory which strives to develop a conceptualization of reality and society which incorporates both a radical social constructivism with the assumption or “givenness” of external reality. The works being drawn upon are predominately associated with phenomenological sociology, systems theory, and semiotics but additional works from philosophy and political science are considered. The result of this venture is the conclusion that affirmation, the proof of the reaction, is the foundation of society. From this conclusion follows the postulation …

Some Notes On Joseph Smith And Adam Clarke, Kent P. Jackson Jan 2020

Some Notes On Joseph Smith And Adam Clarke, Kent P. Jackson

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Authors of two recent articles believe they have found evidence that Joseph Smith, in preparing his revision of the Bible, drew ideas from a contemporary Bible commentary by British scholar Adam Clarke. The evidence, however, does not bear out this claim. I believe that none of the examples they provide can be traced to Clarke’s commentary, and almost all of them can be explained easily by other means. The authors do not look at their examples within the broader context of the revisions Joseph Smith made to the Bible, and thus they misinterpret them. Some of the revisions they attribute …

Alice Meynell's Negative Happiness: The Primacy Of Emotion And The Nature Of Art, Laura H. Clarke

Publications and Research

In a review of Alice Meynell’s essays, Coventry Patmore declared that her prose challenged conventional views of gender: “At rare intervals the world is startled by the phenomenon of a woman whose qualities of mind and heart seem to demand a revision of its conception of womanhood and as an enlargement of those limitations which it delights in regarding as essentials of her very nature.” Meynell, he exclaims, “belongs to a species quite distinct from that of the typical sweet companion of man’s life” in that she is a “woman of genius.” Patmore contends that “in a very small volume …

Nephi’S Obsession, Or, How To Talk With Nephi About God, Ralph C. Hancock Jan 2020

Nephi’S Obsession, Or, How To Talk With Nephi About God, Ralph C. Hancock

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Joseph Spencer’s intimate familiarity with the Book of Mormon text, based upon years of close textual study and informed by a well- developed theological sensibility, is in full evidence in this lead-off volume in Neal A. Maxwell Institute’s new series of books on the various books of the Book of Mormon. Leaving to prophets and apostles the responsibility for “declaring official doctrine,” this new series approaches the book with the tools of the “scholarly practice” of theology. In Spencer’s case at least, his practice is understood to be (1) informed by an emphasis on grace that is skeptical of claims …

Understanding Ritual Hand Gestures Of The Ancient World: Some Basic Tools, David Calabro Jan 2020

Understanding Ritual Hand Gestures Of The Ancient World: Some Basic Tools, David Calabro

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The ritual use of hand gestures in covenant-making in ancient times is a topic of peculiar interest to Latter-day Saints. In this article, David Calabro summarizes results drawn from his doctoral research, providing readers with some tools to evaluate ancient gestures. The questions he suggests are novel, as is the way they are couched in an organized scheme. The author concludes that Latter -day Saints, who belong to a tradition saturated with ritual gestures, should be among those most educated about them.

Ezekiel's Priestly Imaginary: A Symbolic Or Idolatrous Reality?, Dale Launderville Osb Jan 2020

Ezekiel's Priestly Imaginary: A Symbolic Or Idolatrous Reality?, Dale Launderville Osb

School of Theology and Seminary Faculty Publications

The images and genres as well as the structure of the Book of Ezekiel aim to promote symbolic thinking in which the reader receives the word of Yhwh as an engagement with the divine Other. Such engagement fosters a priestly imaginary in which the Judean exiles are called to look beyond appearances as they wrestle with the contradictions generated by the exile and the destruction of the Jerusalem temple. The readers, like Ezekiel and the exiles, can become living symbols of Yhwh. Such symbolic thinking will be illustrated through a focus on chaps. 17-20 in which the tensions between individual …

A Systematic Review Of Citizen Journalism Scholarship From 2000 To 2017, Young Eun Moon, Meredith L. Morgoch, Seungahn Nah

Iowa Journal of Communication

This paper examines how the scholarship of citizen journalism has evolved since the early 2000s. Despite the prolific literature, few studies have taken a systematic approach to examine theories, conceptual definitions, and outcomes. A systematic review of relevant citizen journalism literature was employed to discover how citizen journalism research has evolved over the years, what theories have been used in research, and what features of citizen journalism is discussed in scholarship. According to the results, most of studies are limited to asking for journalists' reactions, and value of citizen journalists focusing on specific cases, and the majority of research uses …

Faculty Research 2020

Short paragraphs that describe gene function, referred to as gene summaries, are valued by users of biological knowledgebases for the ease with which they convey key aspects of gene function. Manual curation of gene summaries, while desirable, is difficult for knowledgebases to sustain. We developed an algorithm that uses curated, structured gene data at the Alliance of Genome Resources (Alliance; www.alliancegenome.org) to automatically generate gene summaries that simulate natural language. The gene data used for this purpose include curated associations (annotations) to ontology terms from the Gene Ontology, Disease Ontology, model organism knowledgebase (MOK)-specific anatomy ontologies and Alliance orthology data. …

Water Governance For Sustainable Development, Henrick Chidzumeni Kunkeyani Jan 2020

Water Governance For Sustainable Development, Henrick Chidzumeni Kunkeyani

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The world is facing critical water risks in relation to water availability, yet the competing demand for water supply is increasing in most countries. To respond to these risks, some governments and water authorities are reforming their governance frameworks to achieve convergence between water supply and demand and ensure freshwater ecosystem services are sustained. Water is recognized as the only natural resource that has the capacity to influence socio-economic growth and poverty alleviation across the globe.

Malawi is generally rich in both surface and ground water resources, however, the pressure on water resources is increasing as a result of a …
