Language Autonomy Plans And Guided Autonomous Language Learning With Technology In University Spanish-As-A-Foreign-Language Instruction In The U.S., Erin E. Real
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The study addressed learners experiences of following plans for suggested independent foreign language practice in support of their formal training in the university foreign language classroom and also of their burgeoning learner and language autonomy. At the end of 17 weeks, descriptive statistical analysis was used for identifying and comparing independent practice times and frequency, preferences for autonomous language activities, obstacles to implementing a recommended plan for independent language practice, and the relative usefulness of autonomous activities for specific language features. The study found out-of-class Spanish practice time increased by an average of nearly 5 minutes per week over the …

Qualitative Case Review Of A Male With Down Syndrome, Mary Josephine Hoyer
Qualitative Case Review Of A Male With Down Syndrome, Mary Josephine Hoyer
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition in the United States. In the United States, about one of every 700 babies is diagnosed with Down syndrome. The purpose of this study was to assess pre-existing data on a 13-year-old male with a diagnosis of Down syndrome to contribute to research on this chromosomal abnormality. The individual received speech and language related services at Western Kentucky University beginning in 2007. Through analysis of previously collected data, the researcher created a qualitative case review that identified the progress of an individual with Down syndrome and emphasized what attributed to his progress. …

OLAC Publications and Training Materials
This best practices document is intended to assist catalogers in creating bibliographic records for objects, which RDA refers to as three dimensional forms, according to RDA instructions. This document provides guidance for the most common object situations encountered in libraries. Each section includes examples that reflect the RDA instructions. A list of resources and a selection of full MARC record examples illustrating common situations encountered in cataloging objects (of various types) completes the document. The Objects Task Force especially worked on the examples to provide a variety of materials that fall bibliographically under Objects. The Task Force found at least …

Integrating Image Caption Information Into Biomedical Document Classification In Support Of Biocuration., Xiangying Jiang, Pengyuan Li, James A. Kadin, Judith A. Blake, Martin Ringwald, Hagit Shatkay
Faculty Research 2020
Gathering information from the scientific literature is essential for biomedical research, as much knowledge is conveyed through publications. However, the large and rapidly increasing publication rate makes it impractical for researchers to quickly identify all and only those documents related to their interest. As such, automated biomedical document classification attracts much interest. Such classification is critical in the curation of biological databases, because biocurators must scan through a vast number of articles to identify pertinent information within documents most relevant to the database. This is a slow, labor-intensive process that can benefit from effective automation.
We present a document classification …
Four Idolatrous Gods In The Book Of Abraham, John Gee
Four Idolatrous Gods In The Book Of Abraham, John Gee
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Although unknown as deities in Joseph Smith’s day, the names of four associated idolatrous gods (Elkenah, Libnah, Mahmackrah, and Korash) mentioned in the Book of Abraham are attested anciently. Two of them are known to have connections with the practices attributed to them in the Book of Abraham. The odds of Joseph Smith guessing the names correctly is astronomical.

Where Did The Names Mahaway And Mahujah Come From? A Response To Colby Townsend’S “Returning To The Sources,” Part 2 Of 2, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw, Matthew L. Bowen, Ryan Dahle
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In the present article, Part 2 of 2 of a set of articles supporting Colby Townsend’s efforts to raise awareness of the importance of textual criticism, we focus on his argument that Joseph Smith created the Book of Moses names Mahijah and Mahujah after seeing a table of name variants in the Hebrew text of Genesis 4:18 in a Bible commentary written by Adam Clarke. While we are not averse in principle to the general possibility that Joseph Smith may have relied on study aids as part of his translation of the Bible, we discuss why in this case such …
The Importance Of Authorial Intention, Donald W. Parry
The Importance Of Authorial Intention, Donald W. Parry
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
It is important when evaluating the words of others to consider the intention of their writing. It also does not hurt to consider what may go on behind the scenes before an article (or a book review) even reaches a particular readership.

“To Seek The Law Of The Lord”, James R. Rasband, Paul Y. Hoskisson, Daniel C. Peterson
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This prefatory material to the festschrift for John W. Welch gives an overview of his exceptional life, full of variety and intensity. As James R. Rasband writes: “His candle burns bright whatever the project.” Hoskisson and Peterson characterize “Jack” as a “polymath” as they give a thumbnail sketch of the history of FARMS (Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies), which he founded and of the book which honors his numerous contributions. A final contribution to this installment provides a useful collection of highlights of his personal and professional life.
Theories And Assumptions: A Review Of William L. Davis’S Visions In A Seer Stone, Brian C. Hales
Theories And Assumptions: A Review Of William L. Davis’S Visions In A Seer Stone, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Within the genre of Book of Mormon studies, William L. Davis’s Visions in a Seer Stone presents readers with an innovative message that reports how Joseph Smith was able to produce the words of the Book of Mormon without supernatural assistance. Using oral performance skills that Smith ostensibly gained prior to 1829, his three-month “prodigious flow of verbal art and narrative creation” (7) became the Book of Mormon. Davis’s theory describes a two-part literary pattern in the Book of Mormon where summary outlines (called “heads) in the text are consistently expanded in subsequent sections of the narrative. Termed “laying down …
Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, And Toads: Joseph Smith’S Reported Use Of Entheogens, Brian C. Hales
Visions, Mushrooms, Fungi, Cacti, And Toads: Joseph Smith’S Reported Use Of Entheogens, Brian C. Hales
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
An article recently published in an online journal entitled “The Entheogenic Origins of Mormonism: A Working Hypothesis” posits that Joseph Smith used naturally occurring chemicals, called “entheogens,” to facilitate visionary experiences among his early followers. The entheogenic substances were reportedly derived from two mushrooms, a fungus, three plants (including one cactus), and the secretions from the parotid glands of the Sonoran Desert toad. Although it is an intriguing theory, the authors consistently fail to connect important dots regarding chemical and historical cause-and-effect issues. Documentation of entheogen acquisition and consumption by the early Saints is not provided, but consistently speculated. Equally, …
“I Of Myself Am A Wicked Man”: Some Notes On Allusion And Textual Dependency In Omni 1:1-2, Matthew L. Bowen
“I Of Myself Am A Wicked Man”: Some Notes On Allusion And Textual Dependency In Omni 1:1-2, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Omni greatly revered his ancestors and their personal accounts on the small plates of Nephi. A close examination of Omni’s brief autobiography (Omni 1:1–3) evidences borrowing from all four of his predecessors’ writings. Moreover, his self-description, “I of myself am a wicked man,” constitutes far more than a confession of religious dereliction. That self-assessment alludes to Nephi’s autobiographical wordplay on his name in terms “good” and “having been born of goodly parents” and his grandfather Enos’s similarly self-referential wordplay in describing his own father Jacob as a “just man.” Omni’s name most likely represents a hypocoristic form of a longer …
Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis
Making Sound Decisions: Institutional Responses To The Crisis In Audio Preservation, David R. Lewis
University Libraries Faculty Publications
Some archives have been quick to respond to the crisis in audio preservation brought on by the combined forces of obsolescence and degradation inherent in legacy audio formats and their playback equipment. These archives have undertaken digitization projects for particular collections or, in a few cases, have digitized the bulk of their audio holdings for preservation. Based on an examination of the literature on audio preservation, however, the responses of some institutions—particularly small and midsized institutions—have been stymied by roadblocks related to cost and expertise. Given the limited time available for archives to migrate audio content, this uneven response threatens …

Romantic Rejection In Gay Potential Relationships: A Gay Blog Analysis, Rebecca Ferlotti
Romantic Rejection In Gay Potential Relationships: A Gay Blog Analysis, Rebecca Ferlotti
Masters Theses
Little research has been done on gay potential relationships (when two daters had gone on five or fewer dates or would-be dates), and there was no existing research available on romantic rejection in gay potential relationships. Most existing literature on romantic rejection focused on heterosexual relationships and long-term homosexual relationships. This thesis analyzed 48 blog entries from four publicly-accessible gay dating blogs ( The Guyliner ; It Gets Worse ; Gay Dating Stories ; and 100 Guys, 100 Storie s) that described romantic rejections. This thesis concluded romantic rejections for the four gay bloggers overall were most frequently implicit, due …

The cloud is a complex material entanglement that moves across multiple scales from the microscopic to the mega-city. The material manifestations of the cloud, like data centers are nodes in an entangled network that cannot be thought apart from the modes of being that they produce. This requires us to think beyond the question — dominant in much architectural discourse — of what it is and ask what does it do? Concerning the cloud these two questions cannot be separated, to ask one is immediately to ask the other. This is the reason why I propose that Lefebvre’s triadic is …

Corpus Analysis Of Engagement Discourse Strategies In Academic Presentations, Carolina Viera, Serena A.P. Williams
World Languages Faculty Publications and Presentations
Text analysis informed by Genre Theory (Hyon 1996) and methods in Corpus Linguistics provide the opportunity to describe language patterns that exist not only at the individual level but also in discourse communities. In this study, we investigate the discourse strategies used by novice and expert members of the academic United States (US) Spanishspeaking community to engage their audience, construct interpersonal meaning, and position themselves as expert speakers. We analyze two corpora: a specialized corpus of 32 conference presentations delivered by professors and doctoral students of Hispanic Studies, and a learner corpus of 24 in-class presentations to describe discourse patterning …
Notes On Book Of Mormon Heads, Stephen O. Smoot
Notes On Book Of Mormon Heads, Stephen O. Smoot
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
This paper looks at the two types of heads used in the Book of Mormon. It argues against a recent theory that these heads served as mnemonic cues that enabled Joseph Smith to extemporaneously compose and dictate the text. Instead, it argues that the function and form of heads in the Book of Mormon finds ancient precedent in Egyptian literary culture and scribal practice. A brief addendum on the ancient precedent for the chapter breaks in the original text of the Book of Mormon is also provided.

Reliable scientific knowledge is crucial for informing legislative, regulatory, and policy decisions in a variety of areas. To that end, scientific reviews of topical issues can be invaluable tools for informing productive discourse and decision-making, assuming these reviews represent the target body of scientific knowledge as completely, accurately, and objectively as possible. Unfortunately, not all reviews live up to this standard. As a case in point, Marino et al.’s review regarding the welfare of killer whales in captivity contains methodological flaws and misrepresentations of the scientific literature, including problematic referencing, overinterpretation of the data, misleading word choice, and biased argumentation. …

A Child's Right To A Name: An Emphasis On The Iranian Legal System, Abbas Mirshekari, Alireza Fattahi Ketilate
Children's Legal Rights Journal
This article provides an interpretation of the Iranian legal system in which individuals are free to choose their own name, unless the choice of a particular name is prohibited by law, depending on a concrete and reasonable justification. Accordingly, both the right of children to have a name and the right of parents to freely choose a name for their children will be explored. A parent's right to name can also be framed as an example of parental rights to their children; albeit a parent's right to name is constitutionally restricted by a principle prohibiting abuse of the right. Beyond Culture: Reimagining The Adjudication Of Indigenous Peoples' Rights In International Law, Beatriz Garcia, Lucas Lixinski
Beyond Culture: Reimagining The Adjudication Of Indigenous Peoples' Rights In International Law, Beatriz Garcia, Lucas Lixinski
Intercultural Human Rights Law Review
This article argues that the current model of Indigenous rights adjudication foregrounds essentialized notions of culture, backgrounding interests of Indigenous peoples (IPs) that are not necessarily related to culture. Culture imposes a burden that limits the possibilities of human rights for Indigenous peoples, which is at least in part attributable to the current model's lack of precision. We show that the jurisprudence on IP rights by international adjudicatory bodies focuses on culture without meaningful attempts to explain and define it, is imprecise on how culture affects the reading of the human right for which it serves as the basis, as …

Do We Need More Productive Theorizing? A Commentary, David Reinking, David B. Yaden Jr.
Publications
In this commentary, we argue that literacy research would be more produc- tive if researchers had a clearer, more nuanced understanding of theory. Specifically, we argue that theory in a practice-oriented field is most fun- damentally productive when it provides instrumental guidance for literacy beyond academic understanding about literacy. Premises for that argument are presented, as well as how productivity connects to an instrumental view of theory within the philosophy of science. We provide examples from au- thoritative sources and relevant studies suggesting that conceptions and uses of theory in literacy research are ambiguous, diffuse, and incoherent. We argue that …

Named Entity Recognition (NER) is the rst step for knowledge acquisition when we deal with an unknown corpus of texts. Having received these entities, we have an opportunity to form parameters space and to solve problems of text mining as concept normalization, speech recognition, etc. The recent advances in NER are related to the technology of word embeddings, which transforms text to the form being effective for Deep Learning. In the paper, we show how NER detects pharmacological substances, compounds, and proteins in the dataset obtained from the Spanish Clinical Case Corpus (SPACCC). To achieve this goal, we use contextualized …

After publishing several articles in peer-reviewed journals, the author published Uto-Aztecan: A Comparative Vocabulary (2011), the new standard in comparative Uto-Aztecan, favorably reviewed1 and heartily welcomed by specialists in the field. Four years later, another large reference work, Exploring the Explanatory Power of Semitic and Egyptian in Uto-Aztecan (2015), was also favorably reviewed2 but not as joyfully welcomed among specialists as its predecessor. While some saw it as sound, more were silent. Some disliked the topic, but no one produced substantive refutations of it. In August 2019, Chris Rogers published a review,3 but John S. Robertson’s response to Rogers’s review4 …
